In 2019, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority estimated it hosted nearly 43 million tourists. Step into the vibrant and beautiful world of living color with natural dyer, designer, and artist Sasha Duerr. Sasha takes us on a journey from Soil to Studio. We learn how creating and working with dyes made from plants, seaweed, and other natural materials can increase our ecological and botanical knowledge, foster collaboration, and have a beneficial impact on ecosystems. Natural dyeing offers us multiple opportunities to participate in solutions. Food scraps and green waste can transform old clothes into “new”. Instead of being buried at landfills and emitting VOC’s, organic materials like onion skins, pomegranate rinds, and citrus peels can be re-purposed into natural dyes that revitalize our wardrobes and lessen our carbon footprint. Some dyes can even be poured into the garden when finished and used as a fertilizer. Unwanted weeds in your yard or invasive plants in your neighborhood can also be turned into color. One of my favorite dyes is Sour Grass. I look forward to seeing this ubiquitous plant every winter. I collect loads of it and dye old clothes a neon yellow that really glows. (Note: Be sure to identify plants before using them as dyes- just in case they are toxic.) Sasha talks about a few of her favorite dyes including Loquat, Eucalyptus leaves, and Redwood Cones, all very appropriate plants for beginning dyers. We also learn about some of the palettes from her new book Natural Color. I especially loved the Pollinator and Perfume Palettes. They will make you swoon! What color story would you like your clothes to tell? Sasha Duerr is an artist and designer who works with plant-based palettes, natural dyes, and place-based recipes. She is an Adjunct Professor at the California College of the Arts with a joint appointment in textiles and fine arts where she designs curriculum and teaches courses in the intersection of natural color, slow food, slow fashion, and social practice. Her work has been shown in galleries and museums across the United States and abroad. In 2007, Sasha founded the Permacouture Institute to encourage the exploration of regenerative design practices for fashion and textiles. Her extensive work with plant-based palettes and ecological principles through local land-based sources and community has been featured in many publications She is the author of The Handbook of Natural Plant Dyes, Natural Color, and Natural Palettes.Discover more about Sasha and her work at SashaDuerr.com. Fashion and textile designers, Jordan Carey and Madison Poitrast-Upton, graduated from Maine College of Art and started a business while they attended the college which is called Loquat. Loquat is a fairly new venture and they have grown tremendously through their small collection of products including their top-selling handbags and facemasks. The skills they have obtained from college which have morphed into their own art and craft have truly gravitated towards the Maine community as people highly enjoy them. With help from their mentors including Jill McGowan and Kazeem Lawal, they come up with unique ways of standing out. They give back to the community by collaborating with other artists to showcase their culture, lifestyle, and passions. They also support women in Portland by providing them with menstrual products that they can't afford and don't have access to. Loquat will continue to grow and prosper and we all should be excited to see what the future holds for them. Please visit Loquat's website to view their products. Feel free to follow them on Instagram to get updates on new products and promotions. Also, please check out the featured musician of this episode, Patrick from Just Plain Jones. As of recent, Loquat has created masks in the midst of the COVID 19 pandemic, created fashion campaigns for accessible menstrual products, and collaborated with local artists to create tote bags. Bliss and Drumming: The Slow Enlightenment of the Hard Rock Drummer
From the blog http://www.blissanddrumming.com, Clementine reads this piece. *** My window seat lives in this little porch room off the kitchen. I imagine that one day the whole room will topple over in an earthquake, set on stilts as it is. We’ve got bedrock beneath us, and the house has weathered such rattling since the early 1900s, but still, I have a plan to leap into the kitchen and roll beneath the table should the shaking begin. You’re supposed to practice disaster routes so the shock of crisis doesn’t leave you paralyzed. I don’t go as far as leaping around in here and spoiling my comfortable perch, but I spend a little time imagining the tuck and roll before I forget all that and fall in love, all over again, with the breeze.

Currently in the studio recording toward what will be her next album, singer/songwriter/guitarist Frankie Raye is based in the greater Tampa Bay area and has played 30 cities and 100-plus venues in Florida. She also performed at the NAMM Show in Anaheim, California, in late January. In May of this year she performed at the 2018 Key Largo Original Music Festival. Soon after that she did a successful performance in conjunction with a Tampa Bay Rays (Major League Baseball) game that resulted in multiple re-bookings. In August alone Frankie has 29 bookings and routinely averages well over 20 dates per month, having been on stages ranging from the Hard Rock in Tampa to the Ritz Carlton in Naples to a festival on the northeast coast of Florida. She has been featured on ABC and CBS-TV affiliate morning talk shows, and gotten her music into radio rotation. Frankie released her first official album in 2016, with worldwide distribution, although she had put out a ten-song, self-produced/independently distributed release entitled, “Chapters” in 2014. Grown either as a loquat tree or a shrub, this fruiting plant is an interesting one. A relative of the rose, Eriobotrya japonica makes small fruits which taste like a blend of peaches, citrus and mango, and some describe it as having a honey note. But most people have never tasted it and know virtually nothing about this unusual fruit or the lushly-tropical tree it grows on! I’m going to fix that right now, because loquats are delicious, nutritious, and quite fun to grow if you’re in the right climate to do it. The evergreen tree is a beautiful ornamental species, but when you add on the perk of having fresh fruit, it’s definitely worth growing! Episode 28: Have you ever heard of Loquats? In this episode, farmer, educator, and author Ken Love talks about this sweet and prolific fruit tree. Found throughout the world, Loquats (Eriobotrya japonica) are easy to grow and maintain. Also known as Biwa and Pipa, Loquats have a long and intriguing history and offer the home gardener an abundant source of delicious fruit with high levels of Vitamin A and Potassium. Loquats are also powerful medicine. The leaves are used medicinally in teas and syrups to clear the lungs. Ken tells us what Loquats need to thrive, how to prune them for high quality fruit production, and how to harvest them for longer shelf life and maximal nutrition. Ken Love specializes in tropical fruit horticulture and grows more than 200 types of exotic fruits on his farm on the Big Island of Hawaii. You can learn more about Ken at his website HawaiiFruit.net or at HawaiiTropicalFruitGrowers.org.

National Gallery of Australia | Audio Tour | Grace Cossington Smith
The panels of this magnificent screen depict subjects from the artist’s garden and surrounding bush landscape. Cossington Smith was especially pleased with the third panel. As she said in an interview with Alan Roberts: ‘There used to be a waterfall along there … called Lovers’ Leap … a lovely proper one … and I did a painting … with the length of the waterfall on the panel … I think it came off rather well; rocks and waterfall and the bush.’ This screen was commissioned by a collector in the United Kingdom who rejected it and acquired The gully instead. At the time the artist was disappointed and vowed never to do another commission. Many years later she was delighted when the work was acquired by the National Gallery of Australia.
