The Dissociative Table
Compassion, Curiosity and Collaboration: Kathy Steele's basic treatment approach (Ep. 209)

The Dissociative Table

This episode, "Compassionate Curiosity," features Kathy Steele, famed co-author of The Haunted Self, advocating for a collaborative therapeutic model in resolving severe traumatization, in which attachment phobias are addressed by giving the client (perhaps "gifting" the client) responsibility in treatment. In this manner, the client begins to experience authentic relationship, rather than the therapist supporting maladaptive coping by becoming either a rescuer or an expert (or both). Ms. Steele is a Past President and Fellow of the International Society for the Study of Trauma and Dissociation (ISSTD), and has also served two terms on the Board of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS). She has received a number of awards for her work, including the Lifetime Achievement Award from ISSTD, an Emory University Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Cornelia B. Wilbur Award for Outstanding Clinical Contributions from ISSTD. Publications include The Haunted Self (co-author), Treating Trauma-Related Dissociation (first author), and many book chapters. Highlights include: -How therapists facilitate dependency by reinforcing attachment phobias-Polyvagal theory and the collaborative approach -The wisdom of prioritizing relationship over knowing "what's going on"-The importance of the client having a persistent "felt sense" of the therapeutic relationship, rather than having unlimited therapist availability and poor boundaries -Curiosity as a tool for making resistance and relationship rupture the most important moments in treatment-Sharing confusion with the client about treatment direction, to drive collaborative treatment an activate the client's exploration system -Psychoeducational discussion as an underrated toolLook for Ms. Steele's online trainings, resources, books, and consultation groups at kathy-steele.com. In future (as in past) episodes, guests will offer counterpoints to Ms. Steele's views, and this video is a dialogue, rather than an endorsement of her perspective. Likewise, The Dissociative Table does not endorse the views of its hosts, nor do any professional organizations to which the hosts might belong. Over the course of a 40 year career, Ron Cephas Jones has built a beautiful body of work ranging from theater in New York City with the Labyrinth Theater Company, to an award winning performance in the NBC television hit, This is Us . Today's guest has learned the craft purely through experience and now teaches the art of breaking down the script to students at the California Institute of the Arts. His credits include the role of William Hill in This is Us, Truth Be Told, The Get Down, Luke Cage, Looking for Alaska, Mr. Robot, Low Winter Sun and many more. Today, Ron breaks down his technique for building dynamic characters by shedding light on all those actor terms like “beats”, “transitions”, “specificity” and everything in between. Through it all, whether it was taking odd jobs in New York, or his two Emmy award wins, Ron Cephas Jones has never forgotten what is most important to him: being a father to his Emmy award winning daughter, Jasmine Cephas Jones, and being happy as an artist. ‘I didn't grow up in a place where I was hanging out with screenwriters,” says Melanie Marnich. “I grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. I was a voracious reader and I think that sparked something in me, but I didn't know that that would be a career.” In college, Marnich was a journalism major with an emphasis in advertising. “I would up doing and loving TV and radio commercials.” She loved the job, but felt limited writing in spurts of 30- or 60-seconds. “Then I got the theater bug.” Feeling that she had some of the right instincts but wanting a more formal degree, she went back to graduate school to learn the ins and outs of becoming a playwright. “That was the big leap, going from advertising to being a playwright. But again, after a few years, I felt like there was something more to do.” Following her gut instinct once more, she pursued a career in filmmaking. “Out of the blue, my theater agent sent a play of mine to an agent in LA, who, unbeknownst to me, sent the play to the Showrunner of Big Love.” She went on to write 12 episodes of the hit HBO series. In addition to Big Love, Marnich has credits for My America, The Big C, Low Winter Sun, The Affair, The OA, The Son, A Murder at the End of the World, and Apples Never Fall. “I think it was an extremely necessary path and the right path for me. I think to say that advertising + theater = TV.” “I think if I had gone into TV sooner, I don't think I would have had the tools I needed as a writer to build a career out of it. I think I learned a lot every step of the way and those various versions of storytelling that created in me someone who understood TV and had specific toolkit beneficial for TV.” Want more? The show focuses on Detroit Police officers Frank Agnew (Mark Strong) and Joe Geddes (Lennie James), who open the series by murdering a fellow detective and staging his body as a suicide. The morning after, it is revealed that the cop our protagonist killed was under investigation by Internal Affairs. When they find the staged suicide, it is discovered that the CI at the center of IA's investigation has been killed and was in the trunk of the car. Frank and Joe are put on the case to solve the murder that they perpetrated. Along with following the twisted goings on of their investigation, we also see some of the criminal elements surrounding the crooked cops of the Detroit Police Department. Finally, Frank is displaying obsessive behavior towards his sex worker partner Katia, who Joe had said was killed but is really hiding out from Frank. The show culminated in Joe killing Katia and the IA investigation being thrown out due to a false confession of a former cop within the department.

Kevin Isola is a self-described journeyman actor, who has experienced great longevity in several media, including theatre, television and film. The Pasadena native attended Duke University, and consequently studied acting at NYU-Tisch, where he discovered the value of being freed-up creatively through faculty who mentored and pushed his creative strengths. We discuss a major moment in his career, which came when he played Rev in the hit 1997 play, The New Bozena, alongside friends and Tisch classmates David Costabile (Lincoln; Billions; Breaking Bad; Low Winter Sun), Michael Dahlen (Blue Man Group; Men in Black II); and Rainn Wilson (The Office; Super; Juno), the latter serving as director. The experience was a trial by fire of navigating an original, creative property which flourished in New York to its sale to Twentieth Century Fox, and being immersed into the Hollywood system. In theatre, Kevin has appeared in WASP and Other Plays (Written by Steve Martin); Twelfth Night; Brooklyn Boy (on Broadway); Accidental Death of an Anarchist; Venus; and Everett Beekin (by Obie Award winner Evan Yionoulis). He was recently in Our Lady of 121st Street (Off-Broadway) and Life Sucks, a reimagined adaptation of the Anton Chekhov classic Uncle Vanya, in which he played Vanya. He has appeared in films such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas (Jim Carrey); Blumenthal (Brian Cox); and Academy Boyz (Ed Asner). His numerous television credits include Billions; Damages; Fringe; Boston Legal; Elementary; Bull; and Law & Order. He has returned to his alma mater, Tisch School of the Arts at NYU, where he previously earned an MFA, as Adjunct Professor in the Graduate Acting Department to teach courses on Shakespeare's Clowns and Advanced Clowning Techniques. In our talk, we discuss his unique journey into several of these creative experiences, including developing recurring character arcs on television; finding himself on the stage through genuine mentors; the evolution of clowning; the irreverant comedy of the web-series Mommy Blogger (Tricia Paoluccio); and working with Glenn Close, Damian Lewis and C.J. Wilson. Opening Credits: UP Paolo Pavan Pasqualino Ubaldini - 06 five special blues; Closing Credits: Another Brick - 1. Refraction

The father of the series, a man who launders money for his survival, is the type of person focused on logic rather than emotion, almost to a fault. In this interview, Mundy discusses the similarities between magazine profiles and characters, how the writers keep the Byrde family in new predicaments, why Marty isn’t necessarily an anti-hero, and what’s the importance of understanding where you lack knowledge about your series. Today on The Neil Haley Show, The Total Tutor Neil Haley will interview Billions Actor David Costible. Costabile's work includes memorable parts in some of the most innovative shows in recent years. He currently co-stars as Mike “Wags” Wagner, right hand man to hedge fund king Bobby Axelrod (Damian Lewis) in “Billions” (which recently delivered the biggest premiere numbers ever for a new Showtime series). In the third and fourth seasons of Vince Gilligan's “Breaking Bad,” he played Walt's lab assistant Gale Boetticher, a mild-mannered, coffee-perfecting chemist with a penchant for poetry and karaoke (“Major Tom”). Many consider the scene in which Gale puttered around his apartment, singing Italian at breakneck speed, one of the series' finest. On “Flight of the Conchords,” Costabile was Doug, Mel's long-suffering husband and on “Suits,' he's Daniel Hardman, the heavy who fought for control of law firm Pearson Hardman. Costabile's credits also include the final season of David Simon's “The Wire,” in which he portrayed the managing editor of a struggling BALTIMORE SUN, and “Damages,” where he played killer Detective Rick Messer.  Constable co-starred as a cult leader in the event series “Dig” and as Simon Boyd, an internal affairs investigator whose murder case begins to go cold on “Low Winter Sun.”  As a guest star, his credits include “The Office,” “The Blacklist” and “The Good Wife.”

Steve donates his testicles to the liberal critics and gets bulldozed by the punters as KickAss 2 makes a mockery of the movie review profession. It's all more polite when we come to 2 Guns as we try to understand Mark Wahlberg's inability to figure out which script was the funny one on his desk. The poor-taste vibe of this episode continues with Channel 4's I'm Spazticus, where TOWIES's lovely Lauren Goodger fights for amputee justice. Everyone takes the opportunity to shit on Detroit when we discuss Low Winter Sun, firstly because the title reminds us that the best Irish summer in living memory is about to be a memory, but mainly because they were mean to RoboCop. In the afters, Mark learns that sometimes sequels have sequels and we have a numeric system for a reason.

Jeff Wattrick and Allan Lengel sit down with Detroit Police Investigator and Low Winter Sun consultant Ira Todd, who dishes about what's true to life and what's embellished for television. "I think they're capturing a part of the city," he says. Todd says he asked the shows creators "Do you want to see real Detroit or do you want to see what everybody else wants you to see? And they said show me real Detroit." " just wanted to show them that there is an underclass of people that are good people but just happen to be stuck in this city." Todd also tells us the real life people that Low Winter Sun characters Inspector Boyd, Papa T and Reverend Lowdown are based on. Plus, where to find delicious corned beef egg rolls.

Es lo que tiene esto de que te guste hacer el programa :P Este año tendremos tres especiales (creemos que ninguno es el que habíamos pensado en principio, somos así) así de primeras. Chris Mundy is one of my more talented friends. Just ask my other friends. More importantly, Chris is a classic "nice guy" (except for the "finishing last" part.) He started his writing career at Rolling Stone (link to one of his cover stories) before venturing out to TV. His first job was at the final season of Chicago Hope where he ended up co-writing the series finale. Chris also wrote and executive produced "Criminal Minds" which is the funniest show on television depending highly on your sense of humor. His new show, "Low Winter Sun" on AMC, premieres after "Breaking Bad" at 10 p.m. on August 11th. Chris not only shares his experiences working on these shows but goes into fantastically informative detail about pitching his latest show and eventually getting it on the air. Get your notepads ready. This is Writers' Bloc at it's most useful.
