A Small Voice: Conversations With Photographers

Using photography, testimony and archive, Diana Matar's in-depth bodies of work investigate themes of history, memory and state sponsored violence. Grounded in heavy research and often spending years on a project, Diana attempts to capture the invisible traces of human history and produces installations and books that query what role aesthetics might playin the depiction of power. A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Diana has received the Deutsche Bank Pyramid Award for Fine Art; the International Fund for Documentary Photography; a Ford Foundation Grant for artists making work on history and memory; and twice been awarded an Arts Council of England Individual Artist Grant. Her work is held in public and private collections and has been exhibited in numerous institutions including Tate Modern, London; The National Museum of Singapore; Museum Folkswang, Essen, Germany; The Institut du Monde Arabe, Paris; The Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago; and Musee de la Photographie a Charleroi. Her monograph Evidencewas published in 2014 by Schilt Publishing Amsterdam to critical acclaim and chosen by New York Times Photography critic Teju Cole as one of two best photography books of the year. In 2019 Matar was appointed Distinguished Artist at Barnard College Columbia University, New York. In April 2024 Diana's most recent book, My America, was published by GOST Books.  In episode 238, Diana discusses, among other things:Early experiences in Panama and Latin America. How an errand to buy a lightbulb changed everything.A brush with Manuel Noriega. How she met her Libyan husband, the writer Hisham Matar. Why she found doing her M.A. ‘really, really challenging'.Her first book project, Evidence. The inclusion of her own writing in the book. Her latest book, My America. Some of the key factors around the issue of police shootings. The complexities of the subject. How she has “intermalised a European sense of America.”Why she shot the project on her iPhone and the rules she imposed on herself.Whether photographs can ‘bear the burden of history.'What she is currently working on.Her reaction to the bonus questions. Website | Instagram“I think I internalised a European sense of America in several different ways. When I was out on the road a lot of things seemed exotic to me, things that I'd grown up with and were just part of being: the long distances; these buildings that just pop up in the middle of nowhere; the emptiness; the scale… the kind of watching of movies of what is the American west. The internalisation I think has something to do with scale. I live in London - the small streets, you're around people all the time, and then being in this openness, which i miss and i love, but I did find it unnerving and it effected how I made the work actually.” Become a full tier 1 member here to access exclusive additional subscriber-only content and the full archive of previous episodes for £5 per month. For the tier 2 archive-only membership, to access the full library of past episodes for £3 per month, go here.Subscribe to my weekly newsletter here for everything A Small Voice related and much more besides.Follow me on Instagram here.Build Yourself a Squarespace Website video course here.

‘I didn't grow up in a place where I was hanging out with screenwriters,” says Melanie Marnich. “I grew up in Duluth, Minnesota. I was a voracious reader and I think that sparked something in me, but I didn't know that that would be a career.” In college, Marnich was a journalism major with an emphasis in advertising. “I would up doing and loving TV and radio commercials.” She loved the job, but felt limited writing in spurts of 30- or 60-seconds. “Then I got the theater bug.” Feeling that she had some of the right instincts but wanting a more formal degree, she went back to graduate school to learn the ins and outs of becoming a playwright. “That was the big leap, going from advertising to being a playwright. But again, after a few years, I felt like there was something more to do.” Following her gut instinct once more, she pursued a career in filmmaking. “Out of the blue, my theater agent sent a play of mine to an agent in LA, who, unbeknownst to me, sent the play to the Showrunner of Big Love.” She went on to write 12 episodes of the hit HBO series. In addition to Big Love, Marnich has credits for My America, The Big C, Low Winter Sun, The Affair, The OA, The Son, A Murder at the End of the World, and Apples Never Fall. “I think it was an extremely necessary path and the right path for me. I think to say that advertising + theater = TV.” “I think if I had gone into TV sooner, I don't think I would have had the tools I needed as a writer to build a career out of it. I think I learned a lot every step of the way and those various versions of storytelling that created in me someone who understood TV and had specific toolkit beneficial for TV.” Want more? Some of her fondest childhood memories involve long afternoons at the library and then reading late into the night. More than ten years ago, she began journaling about the books she read and turned that passion into writing about books. Her first forays were as a guest reviewer on a friend's blog, but she soon realized she wanted to be reviewing and talking about books on a blog of her own. From there, Novel Visits was born. That was in 2016 and, though the learning curve was steep, she loves being a part of the book community. Novel Visits focuses on new novel reviews (print and audio), previews of upcoming releases, and musings on all things bookish.

Raised in the Bronx, Nigeria, and Louisiana, chef Kwame Onwuachi grew up surrounded by cooking. During episode 101, Kwame talks about how that exposure changed the course of his life, and ultimately saved him. Many people know Kwame as one-time contestant on Bravo's Top Chef, season 13 California, and as a current judge on the award-winning cooking competition show that's inspired many copycats, and has made the culinary life mainstream. Kwame documented his riveting journey to food innovator and one-to-watch chef in his memoir paired with recipes, Notes from a Young Black Chef, which we discuss in great detail here. His multi-layered path, peppered with inspiring and difficult moments alike, is set to be turned into a feature film by A24, and Kwame shares the inside scoop on all of it. The James Beard Award-winning chef discusses the duality of his life experiences, the push and pull aspect of his personality, his time as a drug dealer, and the pivotal moment involving Barack Obama and a hangover that shifted his focus to cooking. We talk about being an enigma, needing to get big-time creative as a cook on a ship, his entry into the Culinary Institute of America, some of his jarring experiences of racism, the many things that have contributed to his success, the many nuances that mark his cuisine, and his powerful choice to look at potential experiences as having the best possible outcomes. At one point a wardrobe stylist for Top Chef, Tamara talks to Kwame about exactly why he treasures his unique Top Chef  family and experience. Listen in to hear the amazing story of Kwame Onwuachi, a picture of a modern entrepreneur and visionary---one who opened five restaurants before the age of thirty. You'll hear about his relationship with his creativity, prioritizing his work over his personal life, what fame is like, his longtime love of style and how it's evolved, his My America book of recipes that will allow fans and readers to taste his life story, his intimate vision for his next restaurant venture, and his Obsixed list of current obsessions that include some insider food favorites and a nail polish collection you might have seen him rocking on TC the other day, all that you can discover and shop here:Notes from a Young Black Chef: A MemoirMy America: Recipes from a Young Black Chef: A CookbookORLY Breathable x KWAME nail polish in 'Eggplant' ORLY Breathable x KWAME nail polish in 'Chef's Kiss'ORLY Breathable x KWAME nail polish in 'Sauté' Orion Turtle ChipsGuided meditations from Deepak Chopra
