In this episode I speak to singer, manager, producer and psychotherapist, Yvonne Tiernan. Originally from Dublin, Yvonne has lived in Galway with her husband Tommy for 20 years and they have 3 kids together. She is such an impressive person (a label we unpack during the conversation) who is gifted in many different areas of life. ‘The Raines', the folk trio she's part of, have released their debut album ‘Reverie' and are touring across the country this summer. And during this conversation we get a sense of who she is and what's important to her, as she speaks about her love of her work as a psychotherapist, her career in the entertainment industry, her relationship with her husband Tommy who she finds endlessly fascinating, and how minding others is really important to her. The Raines play in Monroe's as part of the Galway Folk Festival on the 17th of June and Matt Molloy's in Westport on the 18th of June. In this week's episode we look a little closer at how our Irish ancestors lived and worked through the 40 days leading up to Easter Sunday each year. This was a time known as "Lent". It was treated very seriously by the Roman Catholic church - who were very specific in their directions to the flock as to how they should live their lives over this time of penance, fasting and piety. We start with a letter that looks at something called "The Skellig List" and then focus on a Lenten letter that was read out from the pulpits across County Wicklow in the late 1800s.The music starts with a tune of celebration - "Chasing the Fox" (celebration/carnivale) - then moves onto a suitable religious song, the "Our Father" sung in Irish, before celebrating Easter (and the end of Lent) with "Easter Snow". In this episode, we reach for the stars with Irish American astronaut Dr. Cady Coleman, a veteran of two Space Shuttle missions and 159 days in orbit on the International Space Station (ISS).Cady says she's one-quarter Irish on both sides, but that it adds up to much more than half. When not exploring outer space, she's exploring Irish music on the flute and tin whistle, even playing with the Chieftains. On St. Patrick's Day, she live-streamed her playing a tin whistle from Paddy Moloney and an old wooden flute from Matt Molloy while floating in space aboard the ISS as a way of sharing her cosmic experience with them and the entire Global Irish Nation. We discuss her journey into the exclusive ranks of space travelers, the drama of the mission aborted six seconds before liftoff, the sights and sounds of the International Space Station, and “the grief in leaving” space and adjusting to life back on earth. As this episode airs, Russia has invaded Ukraine with Putin, even threatening the safety of the ISS, but Cady talks of the cooperation among all nations involved with the space station and the international structures in place to ensure this orbiting outpost remains neutral territory.Oh, she also was a consultant for Sandra Bullock on “Gravity,” dueted with Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull from the ISS, has done several TED Talks, is a successful keynote speaker, hosts the outstanding podcast Mission Interplanetary, and plays with fellow astronauts Stephen Robinson and Chris Hadfield in the musical group Bandella, and is featured on an Irish postage stamp! Let's light this candle!Cady's Links:Website: Cady ColemanTwitter: Astro_CadyFacebook: AstrocadyInstagram: astro_cadyPodcast: Mission InterplanetaryVideo: St. Patrick's Day from the ISS

“You are no ghost any more”, it sounds very cliché but I love the sound of this words. My today’s guest is nowhere to find in the web. He loves Ireland’s music as I love my ancestor’s roots on Celtics sounds from Galicia, my 3 grandparents were Gallegos and celt pipes is a traditional wind instrument in Galicia. But this episode is not about me, is about my guest who is hard to catch, unless you cross path with him on a metro station. As a Celtic rooted guy, I met Billy while I was going to take my train back to work after a doctor’s appointment. His fiddler flooded the metro air with Irish tunes. I was going down the escalators while I watched him play his violin (fiddler if we are going to talk peasantry way). I stopped and enjoy his music and then we had a small chat and exchange our phones. Since then we were texting each other to schedule this recording. Finally, last Tuesday, 11/26/2019, all planets aligned and we did it. Finding everything about Billy was hard since is nowhere to find in the web. He called himself a ghost until now. BTW, Matt Molloy do play for The Chieftains, Billy was not wrong on his Molloy’s band name. On this episode, there is no music audio, because Billy had troubles converting his few videos in Ireland into an MP3 format. Anyhow, just close your eyes and think about some Irish tunes and Billy playing it for you, I did it while I was asking him questions. If you happen to live or visit Friendship Heights and you see a young tall guy playing the violin in the Metro Station of this town, you should stop, listen to him play, and tell him that you know all about him because my podcast. ???? Tell him, Billy you are not ghost anymore and we love your music. Thank You! Thank You! If you do that, then I have met one of my goals, that you meet one of my guests and that you enjoy what really music is all about: building a bridge between people that never thought of crossing paths. I know the title doesn't narrow down this tune's identity particularly well.  Mind you, neither does "Gan Ainm" which is the other label I have for it.  You can hear it played properly on a record that Tommy Peoples and Matt Molloy made some time ago.

Here's a flute friendly sort of reel.  Brendán Breathnach got it from Denis Murphy but it appears on a few other people's records, including one of Mary Bergin and one of Matt Molloy. My playing here is more Lame Knack Cross than Lománach Cross but hopefully it is still a cross that is possible to bear.

Here's a tune I was asked to play.  It's on Matt Molloy's first record.  I don't know where he got the tune or the name from.  It sounds a bit odd played slowly but here goes ... (The quicker version seems to recover its composure a bit) Brendán Breathnach put it in Ceol Rince na hÉireann 3 (No. 12) in case you want to see the dots, or blood spatters.

Here's a tune which I'm glad to be able to put on here.  I glad to and an on here at all.  The site www.went away for a while but the hosting people kindly got it back for me. This tune was previously recorded by a flute player called Matt Molloy.  I'm sure some people may have heard of him.

I have fairly vague memories of the lats time there was a new century.  I suspect the title of this tune refers to the one before that.  The absence of my having been born adds to my amnesia regarding that event.  I hope I've at least remembered the tune.  I think it is in O'Neill's and on the "Contentment is Wealth" record of Sean Keane and Matt Molloy.  You could check those sources for a bit of reassurance.
