Few players have dominated a sport like Maureen Connolly conquered tennis. The teenage phenom captured 9 Grand Slam titles in her three short years of competitive play before a horse riding accident prematurely ended her career. She remains one of only five players to win all four Grand Slam tournaments in a single calendar year and won both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open three times in a row. The United States Post Office honored her and issued the "Little Mo" postage stamp in 2019. Her life continues to impact young tennis players today through the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation. Listen to her daughter Cindy Brinker Simmons share stories about her mother's amazing tennis career and life, both of which were gone far too soon. Former USTA Texas Section Executive Director Ken McAlister also details the importance of the Maureen Connolly Brinker Tennis Foundation. This episode of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Podcast is presented by the Hampton Inn Waco. All episodes are hosted and produced by Jackson Michael, author of The Game Before the Money: Voices of the Men Who Built the NFL.

It's possibly the greatest tragedy that the world of tennis has seen. Maureen Connolly swept the tennis world, winning nine majors in less than three years... and then, at age 20, was never to play again. In this podcast, Buzz and Remo look at the brief, brilliant career of Little Mo, winner of the first womens Grand Slam. The inimitable Teddy Shingles recalls the curious strategies of her coach, provides insights from his time on the set of the 1970s telemovie of her life, and has something to say about John Newcombe's moustache.
The greatest achievement in tennis, the Grand Slam is rarely discussed or analysed. Until now. In Part 1, Buzz and Remo delve into its origins, the first heroes and those who almost made it but fell at the last hurdle. The first four Grand Slams are covered with Don Budge, Maureen Connolly and of course Rod Laver and his famous double. Teddy Shingles comes in to offer his unique and priceless memories.

Nicknamed “Little Mo” after a US warship, Connolly dominated her sport and became a global celebrity, but her career was cut short by injury and she died an early death. Now, the MCB Foundation runs several events throughout the year, including the Little Mo series of tournaments for players age 8-12 and the Big Mo tournaments for players age 13-16. These are some of my favorite tournaments in all of junior tennis, so I hope you will listen to the podcast then consider adding one or more of them to your player's schedule!
