Picture this: you've come to a crossroads. It's time for a change. But, which way do you go? Where do you start? How do you start? In our 12 in 12 program, twelve women meet for twelve months, with each woman starting out in a new direction. Each creates a project of her own design and begins work on it, supported by the group.  They decide where to start, and what comes next.  How? By constructing individual roadmaps to follow for the year. Each woman's roadmap envisions a path as well as the inevitable obstacles she may confront along the way.  The 12 in 12 roadmaps make up the stories that each woman lives and tells. Listen as Una Betti, Lori McAndrew and Ronda Tamerlane share their roadmaps, and discuss how the women in the 12 in 12 have become markers and grounding for each other as they embark on their individual year-long journeys. What about you? Do you have a roadmap that you can follow?  Does your plot need a twist?   Bios Ronda Tamerlane was born in 1946 in Vallejo California. She has one daughter and two grandkids. Ronda was married 3 times, the last time to her soul mate who died six years after thirty years of being together. She got a BA in 1974 in psychology and had various working situations. She was even a rural carrier for 17 years. When she was in her late 40's, Ronda went to graduate school and began a career as a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist which lasted for 20 years. In 2020, during covid, she retired. She is now writing her memoir.  Una Betti, the creator of Mindful Garden Designs LLC, has been gardening for over 30 years. Her gardens are her passion, and she finds great inspiration in the natural world around her. Una is a registered nurse and a certified project management professional.  Her background in nursing and project management combines both the caring components and detailed mindset to design garden spaces that will come to life and thrive. Her mission statement speaks to all those who need to embrace their space; “To design gardens to create peaceful spaces to facilitate the practice of mindfulness, foster creativity and promote health.”   Lori McAndrew is a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of New York. She is pursuing a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Oregon State University and is an Adjunct clinical supervisor for the Mental Health and Wellness Center at Molloy College. Her research interests include creative pedagogy in counselor education, multicultural counseling competence, and ageism. Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

Public schools are open to all children, no matter what their race, so where’s the privilege in schools? In this episode we’ll learn more about how even (and perhaps especially) well-meaning liberal white parents perpetuate inequalities in schools which disadvantage children from non-dominant cultures. We’ll cover the way that purportedly ‘scientific’ standardized tests perpetuate inequality, ‘second generation segregation’ (which is still alive and well in schools), how white parents who want the best for their children end up disadvantaging others – and what are some steps we can take to move forward. (#) Jen: 01:22 Hello and welcome to the Your Parenting Mojo podcast. We're continuing our series of episodes on the intersection of race with Parenting and Child Development today by looking at the privilege that exists for white parents and children in the school system. Now, hear me out on this one for a minute because I know the common view of our educational system is that it exists to even out privileged to create a level of playing field between families who have more resources and those who have fewer resources. Honestly, that's the way I saw it too until I went through my Masters in Education where I had to write a reflective paper on my view of diversity in the school system. I'd already done research on the origins of the school system from my Psychology Master's thesis in which I studied what motivates children to learn where I found to my surprise that schools were actually not established to give everyone an equal opportunity. Jen: 02:12 Education used to be primarily provided by the family and the church and as the Church lost power, the State stepped in so that it could control what students learn. But the more I dug into issues of privilege in the school system, the more surprised I became. I learned that while texts by “diverse authors” are included in the Common Core English syllabus, the textbooks encouraged students to focus on analyzing minor issues in the story and completely ignore the cultural context of the story, an indication that racism is still present in curriculum even when it looks like it isn't. We'll talk more today about how standardized tests, which have this aura of fairness and scientific rigor, but actually have bias built into the process through which the test questions are selected, and I also found a paper by my guest today, Dr. Allison Roda, which described the informal networks that white middle class parents use to gain advantage for their children in a school system that is intensively set up to provide fair access to all schools for all children. Dr. Roda earned her Ph.D. from Teachers College at Columbia University and is currently Assistant Professor of Education at Molloy College on Long Island, New York. Her doctoral dissertation has been published in a book called Inequality in Gifted and Talented Programs: Parental Choices about Status, School Opportunity, and Second-Generation Segregation. Jen: 03:37 Hello and welcome Dr. Roda. Dr. Roda: 03:40 Hi Jen. Thanks for inviting me. Jen: 03:42 Thanks so much for being here. So, we're gonna do something a bit different for the way we start these normal interviews. When I was doing my Masters in Education, it was pretty common for professors to ask students to identify their privileges at the start of a paper, particularly when we were talking about diversity. So I'm going to identify some of mine and then I wonder if you'd be kind enough to identify some of yours. Dr. Roda: 04:03 Yes. Jen: 04:04 Okay, great. So, the first one obviously is whiteness since we are talking about this subject and my second is economic status. I'm actually upper middle class. I come from a more of a working class family, but I think actually in decent amount due to my whiteness, I've been able to raise my economic status, so that I'm higher now than I was when I was born.

The massive protests after the deaths of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and Eric Garner in New York City strained relationships among police departments, the neighborhoods they serve, and political leaders. Then, in late December, the assassination of NYPD officers Wenjian Liu and Rafael Ramos further escalated the rhetoric and what was at stake. This week on Here’s The Thing, Alec Baldwin talks to two people with years of street experience. Both have compelling visions for improving the broken relationship between police and communities. John Eterno is a retired captain in the NYPD who once defended “stop and frisk” policies. Today he teaches criminal justice at Molloy College and worries about how many more people were singled out for aggressive police scrutiny during the Bloomberg administration. Eterno advocates for a more individually autonomous, accountable, and, above all, transparent police force. David Kennedy is the architect of Operation Ceasefire, a community-based approach to de-escalating inner city gang violence. Over the last three decades, his work has transformed relationships between law enforcement and communities in cities across the country, including South Central Los Angeles and Boston. Now, he’s working in New York City. Kennedy believes that the influence of families, friends, and neighbors has a greater impact on lowering crime than handcuffs, firearms, and courtrooms. Melba Tolliver knows a thing or two about African-American firsts. She was the first black person ever to anchor a network news program. The year was Marchl of 1967, and the news staff at ABC network was on strike. Network executives drafted Melba as the replacement on the Marlene Sanders show News With The Womans Touch. That was just the beginning of a long list of firsts for Melba Tolliver. It was also the beginning a illustrious career in broadcast journalism. Four years after her career launch as the accidental anchorwoman, Melba was assigned to cover the White House Rose Garden Wedding of Tricia Nixon. However, when she showed up in Washington, D.C. with her hair in an Afro instead of her usual straightened style, the brass as WABC temporarily took her off the air. It was time when African Americans were redefining who they were, and Melbas hairdo was another turning point. Never one to knowingly leave a stone unturned or an opportunity on the table, thats Melba's voice you hear on Gimme Me Shelter, the Rolling Stones documentary drawing a hilarious response from Mick Jagger when she posed the question, Are you satisfied yet? Melba is writing a memoir from her home on the Delaware River, appropriately titled Accidental Anchorwoman: Choice, Chance, and Change.
