On August 9th, 1974, Richard Milhous Nixon, the 37th President of the United States of America, while serving his second term (after winning in a landslide), became the first and still only American leader to resign from office. Why? In a word, "Watergate." But Watergate was only the tip of the corruption iceberg. Through the televised Senate Watergate hearings, other members of government and the American public learned that having men break into the Democratic National Headquarters at the Watergate Office Complex  was but one of many, many illegal things Nixon had either outright authorized or at least tacitly endorsed. 69 people would be indicted and 48 of them would be convicted for various crimes related to this scandal, with many of them serving time in prison. Co-directors Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy unexpectedly moving and insightful 2023 Oscar nominated documentary short, THE MARTHA MITCHELL EFFECT, is an archival-based portrait of one of the most unlikely whistleblowers in the history of Washington DC. During the course of the unfolding Watergate scandal, Mitchell was expected to keep quiet, she did not. As a consequence Mitchell was a Republican cabinet wife who was gaslighted by the Nixon Administration to keep her quiet.  THE MARTHA MITCHELL EFFECT offers a female gaze on the scandal through the voice of the woman herself and shows viewers why we need to believe women whistleblowers - something that sadly hasn't improved much since Martha's time. As President Richard Nixon himself once said, "If it hadn't been for Martha, there'd have been no Watergate.” Co-directors Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy join us for a conversation on the life and times of Martha Mitchell in Washington DC, how the behavior of her husband and Attorney General John Mitchell dramatically impacted her life, and how the unlikely friendship between Martha Mitchell and respected journalist Helen Thomas changed the course of American political history. Huiswerk volgende keer: Het hoorspel The War of the Worlds (1938), de films The War of the Worlds (1953) en War of the Worlds (2005).

A mustard-colored Porsche races through the streets of Washington, DC. A crazed political operative holds a pencil to the throat of a former presidential advisor. An orgy hosted by a prominent businessman rages through the night. Does this sound like a documentary about Watergate? Well, it's not actually. These entertaining, adrenaline-fueled moments are brought to you by the 8-part Starz limited series “Gaslit” starring Julia Roberts and Sean Penn about Martha Mitchell, John Dean and the events of Watergate. So, did this stuff really happen? In this special podcast that we're calling “Fact or Fiction”, Ken sits down with a Watergate expert to see how well the series measures up to the facts and discusses why it matters. Where did the idea for “Fact or Fiction” come from? Recently, as Ken was preparing to interview the two directors of the Netflix documentary “The Martha Mitchell Effect”, he was also watching “Gaslit”, which covers most of the same historical terrain. With each new episode, Ken began to wonder how much of this is true and wouldn't it be great to be able to put that question to an expert on Watergate. Enter Jim Robenalt. Jim is a lawyer and writer who has co-taught a course with central Watergate figure (and “Gaslit” main character) John Dean. He's also someone who practically lives and breathes the facts of Watergate. The format is simple: Ken describes a scene from “Gaslit” and Jim weighs in on whether the events depicted in that scene are mostly fact or fiction. We can't guarantee that this podcast will hold your attention as much as that orgy, but it is certainly inspired by actual events, and we swear that Jim Robenalt is a real person, not a composite character. Directors Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy talk about “The Martha Mitchell Effect” on “Top Docs” Jim Robenalt is the author of “January 1973: Watergate, Roe v. "As the Watergate era passes into history, the voices of most of the key players now stilled, Dwight Chapin -- a loyal and discreet member of Richard Nixon's inner circle before and after he captured the White House -- emerges with an intimate and insightful memoir that students of the era never imagined we would see. With its eyewitness account of critical events, many previously undisclosed, "The President's Man" brings to life the extraordinary cast of characters of that tumultuous time: Haldeman, Ehrlichman, Kissinger, John and Martha Mitchell, and, of course, the late President himself. Dwight Chapin's unsparing  recollections make a significant addition to the literature of the Nixon Administration and the annals of the postwar presidency"  --- James Rosen, author of The Strong Man: John Mitchell and the Secrets of WatergateThat is one of many powerful reviews for one of the most important books written on Richard Nixon over the past half century. It was authored by a man who can genuinely claim to be "The President's Man", Dwight Chapin. If you have followed our podcast it often seems that everywhere you look you will see Dwight Chapin. On our shows about President Nixon's remarkable run and the 1968 campaign, it was Dwight Chapin that got President Lyndon Johnson on the phone, that went with Nixon to Martin Luther King's funeral, that helped arrange the meeting with Hubert Humphrey at the elections end. He was there for the "Silent Majority Speech" and he was the man who helped put together every aspect of the trip to China that shook the World. No one was more intricately involved at every turn of the remarkable Presidency of Richard Nixon than Dwight Chapin. This episode is a brief look at this remarkable person entrusted to be at the side of one of our nation's greatest leaders. Dwight Chapin has recently written an outstanding book that we highly recommend, "The President's Man",  and here we have compiled some of the interviews, panel discussion, and a few added insights and materials we thought would compliment the material he has provided as he conducted his recent book tour.  It will give you some insight into the greatest of American Presidents on the eve of our podcasts deep dive into the scandal that ended Richard Nixon's Presidency. For more information on Dwight Chapin's new book and materials here is his website ThePresidentsMan.com  The Lowcountry Gullah PodcastTheculture, history and traditions podcast where Gullah Geechee culture lives!Listen on: Apple Podcasts Spotify

Coined by a Harvard psychologist in the 1980s, the “Martha Mitchell Effect” describes a process in which a person's beliefs are initially labeled as delusional but later turn out to be true. But who was the real Martha Mitchell? What were her claims about Watergate? And why, until now, has she been largely erased from our collective memory? Opening up to Ken about their riveting all-archival documentary short “The Martha Mitchell Effect”, filmmakers Anne Alvergue and Debra McClutchy describe how they set out to widen the lens on Watergate beyond “All the President's Men” to include the key perspective of Martha Mitchell, wife of former Attorney General and Nixon campaign chief John Mitchell. Dismissed at the time as being crazy and a drunk, Martha was, in fact, the victim of a well-planned gaslighting campaign hatched by Nixon, his top aides and even her own husband. Stunning in its revelations and highly immersive in its creative approach, this powerful film will no doubt leave you with a new perspective on those dark days of American history. Speaking truth to power tends to have that effect on people. “The Martha Mitchell Effect” is now streaming on Netflix.   Hidden Gems: Debra: “More Than I Remember” by Amy Bench Anne: “Deerwoods Deathtrap” by James P. In this episode, we get the scoop on two new documentaries on Netflix. In part one, host Sandra Abrams chats with the two filmmakers behind “The Martha Mitchell Effect.” Using archival footage and interviews, it shows how Martha Mitchell paid a personal price for calling the press as her husband helped President Nixon cover-up a political crime, known as the Watergate Scandal. In part two, host Tara Jabbari speaks with Adam Conover about another Netflix documentary, “The G Word.” His six-part comedic docu-series looks at how the U.S. government actually works, its shortcomings, and why he still has hope for the future of America. The Martha Mitchell Effect documentary and The G Word with Adam Conover limited series are both currently available on Netflix. Martha Mitchell trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0SYWxQ62AUMG Word trailer:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zeUq5Duxz1E

Martha Mitchell was the outspoken wife of Nixon's attorney general John Mitchell. The press called her “Mighty Mouth.”  She was one of the first people to realize Nixon was connected to Watergate and she told anyone who would listen.  Some believed her, others called her crazy and a drunk. And when she went missing for a few days, she claimed The Whitehouse was behind it. Director/Editor Anne Alvergue and Co-director Debra McClutchy join us to talk about about their new film called "The Martha Mitchell Effect" that tells her story.

Women have been labeled crazy in an effort to shut them up. In the 1970s, the label stuck to Martha Mitchell. Martha's husband John Mitchell headed up Nixon's reelection campaign. Richard Nixon was definitely NOT crazy. He was totally cool in a paranoid, spying, enemy-listing kind of way. Martha knew one of the Watergate burglars was connected to the campaign and that her husband lied about it. Strange Country co-hosts talk about this woman lost to history and what would happen if women actually were listened to rather than sedated. A couple of things that were not mentioned in the podcast: 1.) Melvin Belli was a prominent American lawyer known as "The King of Torts" and by insurance companies as "Melvin Bellicose". He had many celebrity clients, including Zsa Zsa Gabor, Errol Flynn, Chuck Berry, Muhammad Ali, The Rolling Stones, Jim Bakker and Tammy Faye Bakker, Martha Mitchell, Maureen Connolly, Lana Turner, Tony Curtis, and Mae West. During his legal career, he won over $600 million in damages for his clients. He was also the attorney for Jack Ruby, who shot Lee Harvey Oswald for the assassination of President John F. All the President's Minutes is a podcast where conversations about movies, journalism, politics and history meet. Each show we use the seminal and increasingly prescient 1976 film All The President's Men as a portal, to engage with the themes and the warnings of the film resonating since its release. For minute 80, I join senior contributor at Film School Rejects/One Perfect Shot and writer at Cinema Scope Magazine, Meg Shields. Meg and I discuss "what if Scott Glenn and lasers?"; the horror story of Martha Mitchell seen through the performance of Jane Alexander; and the fact that with great power comes great "mob-ish" behaviour. ----------------- About Meg Shields ----------------- Senior Contributor at Film School Rejects ( https://filmschoolrejects.com/author/meg/ ) /One Perfect Shot ( @rejectnation ( https://twitter.com/rejectnation ) ), Writer at Cinema Scope Magazine ( @cinemascopemag ( https://twitter.com/cinemascopemag ) ). *Twitter:* @TheWorstNun ( https://twitter.com/TheWorstNun ) *Outlets:* *Film School Rejects* ( https://filmschoolrejects.com/ ) *,* *Cinema Scope* ( https://t.co/IggMoLrLCm?amp=1 ) Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/one-heat-minute-productions/donations Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
