The Democratic Alliance has embarked on a Local Government Election Year strategy of fielding strong mayoral candidates in places with poor service delivery. In this interview with Chris Steyn, one of those, veteran independent political commentator Professor Theo Venter speaks about his announcement as Mayoral Candidate for JB Marks Municipality. He gives he reasons for joining the DA after never having been a member of a political party. He gives an update on the service delivery challenges that await him should he be elected - and lists his highest priorities. He also gives the assurance that he has the stomach for the inevitable dirty politics. The Professor confides that he will also have to play detective to trace the fate of the missing Mayoral Chain and vehicle.
In this segment of Mundo in the Morning, Mike Czinege joins the conversation about the history of social activism in schools. He shares his research on the Frankfurt School, a group that started in Germany in the 1920s, and its influence on education in the US. We’re back and this time intend to stay back as this election is shaping up to be chaotic with Ken Sim seeking re-election, Pete Fry launching a bid for mayor and the Vancouver Liberals getting their first caucus members in 90 years. Sim is praising his zero percent property tax increase budget but city employees are not happy. Council can agree on one thing: Headlights are too damn bright. Housing looks shaky but we are building on industrial land. And the dump will continue to take your trash. Born in El Monte and raised in Fontana, Joz Sida has spent over 15 years organizing communities, building coalitions, and advocating for environmental and social justice at the local, state, and national levels. Now, she's bringing that experience home as she runs for Mayor of Fontana. In this conversation, Joz breaks down her path from grassroots organizing to national leadership roles, including serving as the first-ever Chapter Director of the Sierra Club San Gorgonio, National Field Director for organizations like Progressive Turnout Project and Corazón Latino, State Director for Mi Familia Vota in Nevada, and National Campaigner with MoveOn.org. We discuss what she's learned from mobilizing voters across the country, the challenges facing Fontana today, and what people-centered leadership looks like in practice. From environmental justice and public health to civic engagement and community trust, this episode offers insight into Joz's vision, values, and why she's stepping up to serve the city she calls home. ActionSA's Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate, Councilor Xolani Khumalo, will TOMMOROW morning voluntarily hand himself over to the police following allegations of his involvement in an assault case. The party says the incident stems from information leaked from within the SA Police Service indicating an intention to arrest Khumalo in connection with a case involving an alleged drug dealer. ActionSA claims that the same suspect laid a false charge of assault against Khumalo, a charge the party says police are now acting upon. For more on this, Bongiwe Zwane spoke to ActionSA's National chairperson, Michael Beaumont

On this episode of Plain Talk, me and co-host Chad Oban react to more tragedy in Minneapolis, with the killing of Renee Good. The facts of what happened are still being established, but what did we think was going to happen when federal agents are operating under an administration intent on enforcing federal law in the most aggressive, most provactive way possible? Also on this episode, Fargo mayoral candidates Josh Boschee and Denise Kolpack join to discuss their newly-announced campaigns. Kolpack is a current member of the city commission, and the deputy mayor, while Boschee is a Democrat elected to the state legislature. Boschee talked about his skill working across ideological divides, as well as his familiarity with how things operate in Bismarck. He also said he's glad he doesn't have to pretend like he's not a Democrat, despite the mayoral race being officially nonpartisan. Kolpack, meanwhile, said her experience in local government is what counts. She said he's pushed back on some bad ideas from the commission, and would work to alleviate some of the dysfunction there. Both candidates weighed in on Fargo's controversial handling of the Applied Digital data center in the works in Harwood. Kolpack said Fargo acted like a bully. Boschee said he'd have done a better job of setting the city's priorities and communicating them. If you want to participate in Plain Talk, just give us a call or text at 701-587-3141. Brigid Bergin, WNYC's senior political correspondent, offers analysis of what the early vote numbers might mean for the New York City mayoral race, and more news from the campaign trail on Election Day. Plus, Zohran Mamdani, New York State assembly member (D, D-36, Queens) and the Democratic nominee for mayor, Andrew Cuomo, former governor of New York and independent candidate for mayor of New York City, and Curtis Sliwa, Republican nominee for NYC mayor, former WABC radio host and founder of the Guardian Angels, make their last minute pitches to voters.
Jim Walden, former Mayoral candidate in NYC and esteemed lawyer, joins Sid on this Election Day to talk about the NYC mayoral race, with a significant focus on Andrew Cuomo's candidacy. Jim Walden shares his perspective, suggesting that Cuomo, despite his controversies and the public's general distaste for him, is the only viable candidate to beat Mamdani. Walden cites polling data and voter sentiment, particularly from centrists and the black and Latino communities, as evidence of Cuomo's strong position. He also contrasts Cuomo's experience and policy stances with those of Curtis, ultimately arguing that a vote for Cuomo is a pragmatic choice to prevent Mamdani from winning. Tune in here to this Wednesday's edition of the Brett Winterble Show! We’re joined by Terry Donovan from Charlotte to talk about her campaign for mayor and her focus on public safety and civic engagement. Donovan, a Republican candidate, tells host Brett Winterble that she entered the race because she could no longer sit back and watch as crime and division grew in the city. She stresses that Charlotte faces a serious public safety crisis, with CMPD understaffed and residents increasingly fearful. Donovan calls for a change in leadership and attitude at City Council, arguing that acknowledging the problem is the first step toward fixing it. She emphasizes unity, saying that safety is not a partisan issue—it’s something everyone deserves regardless of background or neighborhood. Donovan also encourages citizens to get involved, attend council meetings, and hold leaders accountable. Her campaign message is clear: “We’ve got to take our city back.
