RETIRED SGT BETSY BRANTNER SMITH JOINS DAWN LIVE! BETSY EXPANDS ON THE STATE OF POLICING IN OUR CITIES, AS WELL AS THE PURPOSED SKI MASK BAN HERE IN PHILADELPHIA - BETSY REPLIES TO THE FOLLOWING PROMPTS... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)Philadelphia City Council is poised to ban the wearing of ski masks in certain public spaces this week, a move that police say could help them solve more crimes and stop more pedestrians they suspect of being involved in criminal activity...The bill allows the city to fine people $250 for wearing ski masks in parks, schools, and on public transit. There are carve-outs for religious expression and “First Amendment activities” like protesting... The ACLU says it could violate free expression rights and be misused by officers stopping and frisking pedestrians — a controversial but legal law enforcement tactic that's been embraced by Mayor-elect Cherelle Parker... (Bill author) Councilmember Anthony Phillips... said during a hearing on the bill earlier this month that several recent shootings were committed by people in ski masks. He cited the September 2022 shooting at Roxborough High during a football scrimmage, when 14-year-old Nicolas Elizalde was fatally gunned down. Several of the shooters were seen on surveillance footage the same day, but their faces were obscured by ski masks. Several states, including Virginia, Florida, and Georgia, have similar bans on people wearing facial coverings that are intended to disguise their identity. The Police Department is supportive of the legislation, but its leadership says enforcing the rule and issuing citations may be complicated given the exceptions. Read more. For perspective on whether banning ski masks would help law enforcement, turn to a 29-year law enforcement veteran who now trains officers around the world. (New York Post)New York's Finest continue to bolt from the job at an alarming rate, according to new data obtained by The Post — and some cops worry the exodus will only get worse because the city plans to cancel the next five Police Academy classes, shrinking the nation's largest police force to the smallest its been in decades.A total of 2,516 NYPD cops have left so far this year, the fourth highest number in the past decade... We were Live in Germantown Philadelphia for their Local Government Elections. On this noisy but epic episode, we had a chance to participate in the Local Government elections for city Mayor, Councilors and Judges in Philly, and conducted several interviews with those present at the polling station including: voters and polling station workers and the surrogates working for the candidates. We even got a chance to do a quick Live out-door studio show recorded before an audience comprising residents of the community who took particular interest in the conversations we had with Kevin Poole who spared no time to speak at length with us about Philadelphia Politics, Cherelle Parker, Donald Trump and why he should be ineligible and the state of our country's conscience and the decadence of its morality. Kevin Poole, who is a Democratic Committee member in the 59th ward 10th division was campaigning for Cherelle and was confident that she would get the nomination to ne the 100th mayor of Philadelphia. Moreover, Cherelle would also become the first woman and fist black woman if she were elected. We did the recording on the day of the elections while at the polling station in Germantown Philadelphia on Wednesday November 8, 2023. Cherelle Parker, a Democratic candidate eventually won the mayoral race by a landslide, beating David Oh, the GOP candidate. We also had a chance to speak with several other volunteer workers who had much advice for the candidates vying to become the next crop of leaders who will steer Philly in the next phase of this century. On top of people's concerns were Homelessness, Poverty, Crime and Violence and Education. One conversation was quite interesting especially when a resident of the area stated that homelessness needs to be a big thing just as how elections are big and the candidates have posters and flyers all over, he stated that we need to see more of homeless resources being promoted in the city with the same level of urgency. The show was intense, deep and an enriching experience. We drew attention from several onlookers as we conducted the interviews in open space at the polling station. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 1: On Tuesday, former City Councilmember Cherelle Parker won the Democrat mayoral primary in Philadelphia—and is expected to win the city's general election in November. She would be the first woman to become Philadelphia Mayor. Notably, Parker campaigned on ending safe injection sites, restoring stop-and-frisk policies, and hiring more police officers to help combat crime throughout the city. With 87% of the total vote reported, Parker received 33% of the vote. Meanwhile, despite support from Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), progressive candidate Helen Gym earned just 21.3% of the vote. Is this the end of Gym's political career? It's unlikely. She's already rumored to be a U.S. Senate candidate in the event Bob Casey Jr. (D-PA) decides not to seek reelection in 2024. On Tuesday, President Joe Biden met with Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) in hopes of successfully negotiating a debt ceiling increase. No agreement was reached. Earlier this month, House Republicans passed legislation that would cut long-term federal spending while concurrently raising the federal debt limit. Former City Councilmember David Oh won the Republican mayoral primary in Philadelphia on Tuesday. According to Fox5, “New York City has begun to convert public school gymnasiums into housing for international migrants in the latest effort to accommodate a growing population of asylum-seekers who have overwhelmed the city's homeless shelter system.” The controversial policy has led to wide-spread, massive protests being led by parents.
