In this episode of the Canadian Podcast, I, Zak, invite you to join me on a journey into the hauntingly beautiful story of Lake Minnewanka. Beneath its serene, crystal-blue waters lies something extraordinary: the forgotten resort town of Minnewanka Landing. Picture this—a bustling community from the early 1900s, filled with life, laughter, and visitors from far and wide, now lying eerily silent and submerged. I'll walk you through how this once vibrant town met its watery fate when a dam project raised the lake's water level, drowning homes, businesses, and dreams in the name of progress. I'll share what still remains for scuba divers to discover and reflect on the lasting legacy of a community that's become an underwater ghost town. Join me as we uncover the secrets hidden in the depths of Lake Minnewanka and explore how time and nature can transform even the most lively places into whispers of history. Thank you for listening! Thank you as we reach our 200th episode on the Canadian Podcast, as we step into 2024, I'm thrilled to delve into the inspiring legacy of Seabiscuit, the legendary underdog racehorse from America's Great Depression era. What makes this episode special is how it draws a unique parallel between Seabiscuit's story and the enduring spirit of Canadian resilience, highlighting the Canadian connection through his jockey, Red Pollard. Seabiscuit's improbable rise to stardom, especially focusing on his partnership with Canadian-born jockey Red Pollard. Their journey together is a testament to the underdog theme. Their most notable victory, against War Admiral in the 1938 Pimlico Special, exemplifies the triumph of the underdog spirit, a theme that resonates deeply with me. Today and everyday, we must remember to celebrate the often quiet but significant lives of Canadian veterans, military personnel, first responders, and entrepreneurs. Their stories of overcoming adversity, often unsung, echo the tales of Seabiscuit and Pollard, underscoring shared themes of resilience, determination, and belief. Reflecting on the past year's challenges, we must draw inspiration from Canadian icons like Leonard Cohen and Donovan Bailey. Their stories of late success and Olympic glory reinforce the message that it's never too late to achieve dreams. True success, I believe, comes from perseverance and grit. Thank you to our guests, our listeners! As 2024 begins, I encourage everyone to embrace this spirit. Inspired by Seabiscuit and Red Pollard, and countless Canadian heroes, we're reminded that with teamwork, courage, and resilience, no challenge is too great. This 200th episode of CanadianPodcast is not just a celebration of a significant milestone. It's a beacon of inspiration, urging us all to carry forward the underdog spirit into the new year and beyond. - Thank you, Zak (Founder and Host of the CanadianPodcast.ca)

Doug's life journey is nothing short of inspiring. Hailing from the northern prairie city of Edmonton, Canada, Doug's curiosity about the world led him to venture overseas at a young age, seeking to experience life from diverse perspectives. Upon returning, he pursued a career in law, forging a deep connection with unconventional clients, particularly the indigenous communities of western Canada. Through his legal work, Doug championed justice, addressed injustices, prosecuted claims, and pioneered future development. However, in the middle of his life, Doug decided to embrace change and ventured into the then-unheard-of field of executive coaching. In a bold move, he brought The Executive Committee (TEC), now known as Vistage, and its Executive Leadership Program to Canada. As a TEC/Vistage Chair, Doug introduced coaching, peer advisory groups, and some of the continent's most brilliant speakers to young Presidents of mid-market entrepreneurial companies. His dedication and expertise helped these leaders take their companies to new heights, especially in the thriving western North American economy. In 2014, life threw a significant challenge Doug's way when he was diagnosed with cancer. During his courageous battle and long road to recovery, he discovered a newfound passion for writing. With his deep well of knowledge in working life and what comes after, he sought to share his experiences and insights, touching the lives of countless individuals. Today, Doug's creativity knows no bounds as he continues to write and paint, expressing his vibrant spirit. His zest for life takes him across the western Canadian prairie and coast, while he also explores the wonders of central Mexico. Jeremy Evans who shares his inspiring survival story set in the remote backcountry of the Canadian Rockies with ZAK of the Canadian Podcast in this episode. In August 2017, 32-year-old Jeremy Evans endured multiple ferocious attacks by a protective female grizzly bear while hunting in the Alberta wilderness. Jeremy's injuries were massive, his scalp and face destroyed, an eye and his jaw dangling down. The tendons on one leg had been fully severed during the mauling. His hands were damaged where he had physically fought the bear. It was more than a dozen kilometres to where he had parked his truck in darkness early that morning and absolutely no one was near. Thoughts of his wife and their eight-month-old daughter consumed Jeremy as he stumbled and crawled for hours back to his truck, before driving himself several kilometres to a backcountry lodge for help. All the while, Jeremy thought of his young family and the upcoming sixth wedding anniversary that he feared he might never be able to celebrate. Mauled carefully details what happened deep in an Alberta forest where few modern humans tread. Jeremy's miraculous recovery and life lessons learned when so close to death show that human determination can defy the greatest of odds, and that setting small goals along the road to recovery can lead to remarkable achievements. Despite the traumatic stress the encounter produced, Jeremy holds no animosity toward the bear and still enjoys spending time in the backcountry. To him the grizzly was doing what the best parents do: protect their young. Jeff Depatie served 15 years in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), starting in the airborne infantry, then being accepted into Canada's elite special forces unit, Joint Task Force 2 (JTF2), as an assaulter and sniper. After multiple deployments, Depatie left the military and formed the Special Forces Experience (SFE), a community made of a collective of individuals rooted in the belief that challenge and adversity can be a springboard for growth in all aspects of life. His vision is to identify superior non-military men and bring them together to see if they collectively can solve some of the world's biggest issues from the ground up. “Being a tier one operator, I've had to make decisions and carry out policy that may not have been the popular choices but certainly what I believed to be the necessary choices. While I don't believe all decisions our governments make are morally correct, I know I've carried out unpopular missions for the greater good – the tough ones. The ones you don't hear about. The debate of what makes a man a ‘good man' is certainly one of morality. And since morality is tied to differing individual values, I define him as one who has the far-sightedness to serve the greater good of humanity on a micro and macro scale and not one that chooses to serve the popular decision.” Depatie is committed to maintaining peak physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual shape – in addition to constantly improving the courage it takes to will that strength. For years, he's been building his skills in the following crafts: Human Optimization Processes Elite-Team Selection Tactical shooting: Depatie has taught pistol, shotgun, carbine, and long-range shooting to incoming tier-1 operators. He was a part of the sniper unit that has the current world record for longest confirmed kill at 3.5 km (2.2 mi) Martial arts training in multiple disciplines: MMA, karate, combato, defendo, and spears Skydiving and paramotoring: With multiple qualifications and course completions for each Piloting aircrafts: Private, IFR, float/sky racing, general purpose bushcraft Professional driving: On/Off road and multiple ATV variants such as UTVs, dirt bikes, and on/off road motorcycles Open water scuba and diving CCNA/CCNP Cisco Certified Network Professional >50 confidential military courses and qualifications Depatie has spent years of his life in deserts, jungles, extreme cold, and other hardly inhabitable geographies. He also co-founded Meraki Collective, a coworking space designed to help revitalize a failing small town in Ontario. He has been a student and a seeker of adventure and human possibility. In the words of Master Yoda, “failure the greatest teacher there is.” #JTF2 #JointTaskForce2 #CanadianMilitary #CanadianArmy #CanadianVeteran #CanadianPodcast
