Retro and current gen gaming chat, with Trev and Stu, its the Console Shockcast! Gaming hardware used to get cheaper as it aged, but those days seem to be over. This week, Trev and Stu discuss Valve’s surprise Steam Deck price hike, debate whether gaming is becoming more expensive, and explore how changing buying habits could shape the future of consoles and PC gaming. Valve shocks gamers with major Steam Deck OLED price increases. Does the Steam Deck still offer good value, or have rivals overtaken it? Comparing the Steam Deck against the Lenovo Legion Go S and ROG Ally. Why modern consoles and handhelds are getting more expensive instead of cheaper. A look back at the PS2, Nintendo 64 and the era of dramatic hardware price cuts. Is gaming really more expensive today, or are we getting more value from longer-lasting hardware? Budget PCs, second-hand components and why more players may be moving away from traditional consoles. Predictions for the Steam Machine, PS6 and the future cost of gaming hardware. Episode 301: This week's episode dives into the tech stories that should keep you up at night. We start with the chilling reality of the 23andMe breach—proof that your genetic code, the one thing you can never change, can be stolen, sorted, and sold to the highest bidder. Then we move to smart‑city surveillance gone rogue, where police camera networks keep recording even after the city tries to shut them down, leaving officials resorting to trash bags and tape while the data quietly flows elsewhere. Add in AI-driven hardware shortages now hitting consumer devices, and the picture gets even more unsettling. But the unease doesn't stop there. We tease emerging tech that blurs the line between science and science fiction: Wi‑Fi systems that can identify you through walls, living neuron computers that learn, and AI models struggling to admit what they don't know. Finally, we ground it all with a space‑tech reality check—from Blue Origin delays to SpaceX's crypto holdings—reminding listeners that even the companies shaping the future aren't immune to chaos. If you want the stories that reveal how fragile our digital world really is, this is the episode you don't skip all coming up on TechTime Radio, with a little whiskey on the side.-- Full Episode Details:Your genetic code is now a commodity, and the scariest part is you can't cancel it, replace it, or reset it like a password. We open with the 23andMe breach and lawsuit, unpacking how credential stuffing can unlock deeply personal genetic data, why DNA privacy is permanent, and what it means when stolen data can be resold and targeted by group. If you've ever wondered whether consumer DNA testing is worth the risk, we lay out the tradeoffs in plain terms. Then we head straight into smart city surveillance with a story that's equal parts absurd and alarming: police camera networks that can't be shut off by the city that paid for them. When officials learn data is being shared beyond local law enforcement, the “solution” becomes literal black trash bags over the lenses. It's funny until you realize it exposes a bigger issue in public tech contracts, license plate reader systems, and who truly controls the technology embedded in daily life.We also connect the dots between AI infrastructure and your wallet, using the Steam Deck OLED price hike as a real-world signal of component shortages, supply chain pressure, and AI data centers consuming the same memory and compute ecosystem that powers consumer devices. Along the way, we play Two Truths and a Lie with stories about Wi-Fi based person identification and living neuron biocomputing, then talk AI reliability and the push for models that can finally say “I don't know” instead of hallucinating. We close with a space tech reality check from Blue Origin and a blunt conversation about SpaceX's Bitcoin holdings and why crypto still feels like speculation to a lot of people. If you like tech news that's practical, skeptical, and still fun, subscribe for weekly episodes, share this with a friend who loves debating privacy and AI, and leave us a review so more people can find the show.Send us Fan MailSupport the show

In today's Daily Fix:CD Projekt RED has made it official: The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is getting (at least) one more expansion in the form of Songs of the Past. It's scheduled for release in 2027 and is the third major DLC for The Witcher 3, coming about 11 years after the last expansion, Blood and Wine. This should hold fans over while they wait for The Witcher 4, which currently has no release date. In other open-world RPG news, Warhorse Studios teased their upcoming Lord of the Rings game, and reassured fans of their Kingdom Come: Deliverance games that the LOTR RPG will be similar to those. And finally, Valve is not immune to the global economic situation as they have now raised the price of the Steam Deck OLED models. The 1tb and 512gb models will go up around $230-$300 depending on the hard drive space. The original LCD models appear to have been unaffected (for now).Thinking of coming to IGN Live 2026? It's a small miracle that a bunch of us managed to get our heads out of Mario Kart World long enough to make a show about the Switch 2. But that's what we did! First, we chat with The Verge's Andrew Webster about his review, and why it feels like the Switch 2 is both everything we wanted and somehow still a little underwhelming. (Or at least just... whelming.) After that, The Verge's Ash Parrish tells us about her adventures traveling with the Switch 2, plus her recent time with the new Asus ROG Xbox Ally, and what she's learning about the future of consoles. Finally, The Verge's Sean Hollister helps us answer a question from the Vergecast Hotline all about console prices: why they keep going up, and whether they'll continue to be worth it. Introduction Welcome to RetroLogic! I'm Dan Caporello here with Sam Wagers, John Cummis and Shannon Eno   But RetroLogic isn't just a podcast. It's a community of retro gamers! - We've got an active, friendly, and free discord. - Giveaways - Contests - AND Dive into our family of Retro podcasts! Like RetroGroove, a music history podcast, and On Topic Retro, a podcast dedicated to 1 video game per episode hosted by our very own John Cummins. - you can find everything at our website retrologic.games Tell me one thing that happened this week! The Price Is Retro If this is your first time playing Price Is Retro, here's how we play. I'm going to list off 4 or 5 games and everyone has to guess how much the lot is worth in total. Whoever is closest to the actual value wins that round! Everyone has a list and everyone guesses on each other's list. At the end, the player that won the most rounds wins the episode! But watch out for the robot Deus Guess Machina! He averages all of our guesses together for his own guess Shan's list Sam's list John's list Dan's list   Trivia Card   Show Topic Console Iterations Community Couch   @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! What are your opinions on console iterations? Do you prefer the model of console iteration that we usually get from Nintendo (sometging new and different) or prefer the PS/Xbox (Same but more powerful) route. Also do you like mid generation iterations like pro models or do you usually skip those. Maybe you wait for the pro model lol. Let's us know and we will discuss this on the next show!   5 Ri Sol-ju — 1/24/2025 10:11 AM I prefer mind gen iterations like PS Xbox but I generally get the iterations if there is an improvement on battery or screen. The only one I didn't get was the Steam Deck OLED because it was just a sunk cost of 900 after selling the original, I guess cost also factors in. I usually get everything at launch if available   @Datfast (John) @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! Solo — 1/24/2025 10:16 AM Considering how hugely successful the Switch was I am hearing people say Nintendo played it safe and smart with this new console. I don't see that as a bad thing at all as I feel if it is not broke don't try to fix it. The Switch is being modeled by other companies and to have an entry that is more powerful will be great. Would rather have something that brings more games to play better and more 3rd party releases than the next whimsical features they May or may not stick. Can't help but think back to all the comments of the MK1 pics of people saying “but Nintendo fans say graphics don't matter.” Drex1981 — 1/24/2025 10:17 AM The only iteration I was interested in was the DS Lite. That was a massive step up over the regular DS. I could care less about the PS4 pro or PS5 pro. My OG switch is serving me just fine.   @Datfast (John) @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! Your Wallet's Defense Attorney — 1/24/2025 3:19 PM I kinda just don't really take notice of them DoubleD — 1/24/2025 3:19 PM I definitely get more excited about Nintendo console iterations, but will also always get the next PlayStation console as well, just because that's where the new games are going to be. I will say that I actually delayed my purchase of the PS5 for a while, because initially there weren't many games that I was interested in that weren't also available on the PS4. Regarding mid gen iterations, it's all about the bang for the buck. When the PS4 Pro came out, I was upgrading my TV to a 4K one, so I was motivated to upgrade to the Pro as well to get the most out of the TV, and was very happy with the decision. I also got a Switch lite during the pandemic because my wife was hogging my Switch with Animal Crossing, but now it's just collecting dust. I never got an OLED Switch, because I primarily play it docked.   @Datfast (John) @everyone it's time to dust off the old community couch! SkinnyMatt — 1/24/2025 8:10 PM Meh. Whatever they want to do. It's their business. Speaking of model iterations, when does the Commodore 65 come out?
