We are diving into Mental Health today. It is such an important conversation, and I am honored to have Mehri Coutler part of this conversation. She has been incredibly vulnerable with her story online; sharing about her mental health crash. And from that, she has become an advocate and leader online for mental health. One of the biggest steps she took in unlocking her best life was through decluttering her home and mind. There REALLY is a link between clutter and your mental health. I KNOW you are going to love her and receive good things from this conversation. ❤️ Mehri Coulter is the unashamed blogger and Instagrammer behind So Bipolar and is currently building out a new mental health nonprofit, Buffalo Effect. Buffalo Effect works to get tangible resources and support directly into the hands of those navigating their mental health challenges. You may have seen Mehri and her husband on the WebMD Documentary "Married to Bipolar," where they give hope to those living a married life with a mental health diagnosis. Mehri has had the privilege of speaking with thousands of people from around the world about their most intimate details of their lives and mental health because of her own bipolar diagnosis. Mehri has lived the last 6 years of her life thriving, despite her diagnosis. In this episode Allie + Mehri discuss:

Join Elizabeth and Catriona for a thought-provoking conversation with our episode guide Philippa Bayley as we delve into how language can help us relate with ourselves, other people, and the earth, and provide fresh perspectives and energy on topics such as climate change. Philippa is a research scientist turned public engagement practitioner and research manager with a passion to create unique spaces that help people think differently, whether that is 1:1 or in large-scale public events. Listening is really healing. People need someone to listen--just listen--to them. Everyone possesses a basic need to be truly seen and truly heard. My special guest Mehri Coulter knows full well the tremendous healing power of listening. Mehri is a mental health advocate who happens to live with bipolar. In this episode she shares some of her very real struggles, and shows us how important it is for people to be seen and heard. Mehri was diagnosed with bipolar at age 20 when her fiancé brought her to a psychiatric hospital for being suicidal. After hospitalization and some medication, she did relatively well until experiencing severe postpartum depression after the birth of her third child. The next five years found her in a mix of severe depression, hypomania, anxiety and medication withdrawals. Mehri's sister also suffers from bipolar, and so that people would not feel ashamed and alone, started her blog and Instagram account So_Bipolar. She aims to normalize the conversation about bipolar and to help lessen the stigma around mental health. People with bipolar are in desperate need of a listening ear. Only a few months ago, Mehri lost her 16-year-old nephew Christian to bipolar by way of suicide. No lives should be lost this way. Join us for a frank yet energetic conversation about bipolar, listening, and mental health in general. If you or someone you know needs help, please reach out. It is available. --- Contact Mehri on Instagram: @So_Bipolar ---
Lagniappe (/ˈlænjæp/ LAN-yap, /lænˈjæp/ lan-YAP) New Orleans is my favorite city to visit. There are so many unique things that a person can only find there and no were else in the US. When talking with noted Whistleblower Attorney, Cleveland Lawrence of Mehri & Skalet PLLC, I found out he's originally from New Orleans. Not only did I learn some interesting new Creole words, I also found out a few really cool things related to his roots there, and what kinds of community involvement he still is a part of. Cleveland is an expert on False Claims Act, whistleblower, fraud, and compliance issues, and has been a thought leader in the qui tam community for more than a decade. From 2008 to 2016, Cleveland led the Taxpayers Against Fraud Education Fund (TAFEF) and its sister organization, Taxpayers Against Fraud, and regularly met with whistleblowers, federal and state government officials, private attorneys, and the public to combat fraud against federal and state funds. He also served as editor-in-chief of TAFEF’s law journal, the “False Claims Act & Qui Tam Quarterly Review.” After leaving TAFEF, Cleveland returned to private practice and spent two years as the Whistleblower Director for the Sanford Heisler Sharp law firm, before joining Mehri & Skalet. In 2020, he re-joined TAFEF’s leadership, and serves as a member of its President’s Council. Throughout his distinguished career, Cleveland has worked with the highest levels of all three branches of Government to shape whistleblower law and policy. In addition to arguing before federal district and circuit courts on behalf of his own whistleblower clients, he has authored and filed numerous amicus curiae briefs in federal and state courts across the country – including the U.S. Supreme Court. Cleveland has also and partnered with high-ranking officials from the U.S. Department of Justice to coordinate the nation’s largest annual False Claims Act conference – which often featured Directors of the IRS, SEC, and CFTC whistleblower programs. Moreover, he has testified before Congress and state legislatures regarding FCA and whistleblower-related legislation; represented a testifying witness during Congressional committee hearings; prepared draft federal and state legislation; and submitted multiple comment letters to federal agencies implementing Dodd-Frank and other whistleblower reward programs. Cleveland received a B.A. from Georgetown University and he graduated, with honors, from The George Washington University Law School, where he was a member of the Public Contracts Law Journal. After meeting and having the honor to speak with so many respected and insanely knowledgable people in the "whistleblower realm", I always wondered what it would be like to sit down with more than one expert and just candidly discuss the topic we all know so well from three different viewpoints, just to see where we all stand on certain topics. I was able to do just that with two heroes, Richard Condit and Tom Mueller. It's easy to see how passionate we all are about this topic, and the surprise insights listeners wont get anywhere else. Part 1 of 2 part series.Richard Condit is a partner at the prestigious Law Firm, Mehri & Skalet PLLC in Washington DC. He heads the firm’s Whistleblower Law Practice and has over 25 years of vast and successful experience fighting for and working with whistleblowers from almost every different industry, covering such problems as nuclear safety, environmental protection, bank fraud, food safety, mortgage fraud, securities, law or regulatory violations, public transit safety, and many others. Mr. Condit worked at the Government Accountability Project (GAP) before joining the firm, helping to develop the organization’s environmental whistleblower and citizen enforcement programs, before leading GAP’s in-house litigation of whistleblower and open government cases. Mr. Condit also spent more than five years as Counsel to the Chemical Weapons Working Group (CWWG), which led an international effort to require the U.S. Army to safely dispose of stockpiled chemical warfare agents. A licensed attorney in the District of Columbia, Mr. Condit is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, U.S. District Courts for the District of Columbia, District of Colorado, and Southern District of Indiana, and regularly practices before the U.S. Department of Labor, presenting whistleblower cases to the U.S. Office of Special Counsel and U.S. Merit Systems Protection Board. He has also been permitted to practice pro hac vice before other federal and state courts and agencies.Tom Mueller is a free-lance writer and noted journalist, educated at Oxford (DPhil, Rhodes Scholar), Harvard (BA, summa cum laude), and Alief Hastings High School in rural east Texas. Tom has lived or worked in 48 countries, gaining a wide array of professional insight & knowledge. His diverse experiences include studying classical guitar in Seville, Spain with América Martínez, a disciple of Andrés Segovia, and working as an associate in M&A at Goldman Sachs, in their London and Frankfurt offices. After almost seven years of research and writing, his most recent book, Crisis of Conscience, is a cultural history of whistleblowing shown through a series of riveting cases. Drawing on in-depth interviews with more than two hundred whistleblowers and the trailblazing lawyers who arm them for battle--(plus politicians, intelligence analysts, government watchdogs, cognitive scientists, and other experts)--Mueller anatomizes what inspires some to speak out while the rest of us become complicit in our silence. His previous book, Extra Virginity, is a New York Times best-selling account of olive oil culture, history, and crime, and his articles have appeared in the New Yorker, National Geographic Magazine, New York Times Magazine, Atlantic Monthly, among many others. This week on Milk Street Radio,Yasmin Khan gives us a closer look at Iranian food and her personal journey with it. “I think saffron probably for me is the most evocative of all Iranian spices,” says Khan. “It has a very special kind of place in the Iranian home. I had a really wonderful experience with the woman whose farm I was visiting, Mehri. She was telling me all these tales of the different ways that they use saffron. I [had] recently separated from my partner at the time, and she insisted that she knew the perfect broken-heart saffron concoction. She made me a beautiful small glass of warm milk that she infused with saffron and a little bit of honey. It certainly warmed my heart.” We’ll also offer our recipe for quick pork tapas and a tip for cooking pasta in its sauce. Dr. Aaron Carroll explores the truth about peanut allergies, Lior Lev Sercarz takes us inside the world of spices and, as always, Christopher Kimball and Sara Moulton take your calls.
