On this week's episode we're chatting with Tennessee State Senator Raumesh Akbari to discuss recent legislation coming out of Tennessee's Republican-controlled senate, as well as the recent expulsion of two Tennessee legislators. We will also be chatting with DFER's VP of Governmental Affairs Hans Goff, obtaining his perspective on how legislation & trends coming out of Tennessee are being reflected on a national level.
Episode Notes My guests include State Senator Raumesh Akbari. With the Legislature recently ending we get a report card on how things went, both the highs and lows. Also, what is the realistic hope (if any), for any Red flag laws regarding any type of gun laws or restrictions. She shares her thoughts. With the crime rate at an all time high and our juvenile crime situation very much out of control how do we ensure our citizens safety? We ask Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy about that, bail reform, the blended sentencing effort for juveniles and just how to enforce a curfew for our teens. Next, we introduce you to Cassandra Corbin Blake who is a poet, book author and a minister. She tells us what the inspiration was for her collection of poems and how her home town in Arkansas inspired them. It's all Monday both on air and online, 6-7 pm on WYXR 91.7 FM, WYXR.org, TuneIn, Facebook Live, YouTube and wherever you get your podcasts. It's time to talk!

Iran has recently executed a British-Iranian national, Alireza Akbari, a former deputy defence minister, on charges of spying for Britain. Akbari's execution comes as Iranian authorities have crushed anti-government protests and carried out four other executions. Western countries, including the US and the EU, have denounced Iran's death sentences and trials as flawed. Nationwide anti-government demonstrations erupted in Iran in September after the death of Kurdish Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, who morality police had detained for violating the country's dress code. Prince Harry has become embroiled in the centre of a diplomatic row after Iran accused the UK of “preaching” about human rights while turning a “blind eye” to the Duke's killing of 25 Taliban members. Tensions have been escalating between the UK and Iran after the execution last week of Alireza Akbari, a British-Iranian citizen who had been charged in Iran with spying for MI6. Akbari's family has categorically denied the charges. Britain has condemned the execution of Akbari in the strongest terms and recalled its ambassador from Tehran. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/talktv/support
Shockwaves over Iran's execution of the dual Iranian-UK national, Alireza Akbari, continue to be felt. The Islamic Republic's government confirmed at the weekend the sixty-one-year-old former deputy defence minister had been hanged, after being accused of being a British spy. Mr Akbari's initial confession has widely been dismissed, including by the late minister's nephew. Britain immediately responded by withdrawing its envoy to Tehran. Negar Partow, an Iranian-born international security expert from Massey University, spoke to Jimmy Ellingham.
After 60 years of trying, Indonesia finally has a new criminal code that standardizes sentencing, boosts legal certainty and updates penalties that were more in line with the Indonesia of the Dutch colonial era than that of the 21st century. But, as Anugrah Rizki Akbari, lecturer of Criminal Law at Universitas Indonesia told Kevin and Jeff, the passing of the criminal code is not the finish line, but rather the beginning of a three-year process of combing through decades of statutes from to bring them in line with the new code. While an improvement on the patchwork of laws that date back to the 1800s, the code is proving controversial.Conservatives in parliament are on board because the new criminal code includes jail time for extra marital sex. The president and vice president can levy criminal charges for defamation. These provisions will need safeguards and must be followed up with robust training of Indonesia's vast police force and public prosecutors. On balance the new criminal code is a welcome development -- but in the wrong hands it could undermine Indonesian democracy, personal liberties and the country's standing in the world.Support us at buymeacoffee.com/reformasiSupport us on buymeacoffee.com/reformasi
The last time Iran faced the United States at the World Cup, back in 1998, the streets of Tehran erupted in celebration after Iran won. This time around, feelings are much more complicated. Iranians are entering a third month of protests after 22-year-old Mahsa Jina Amini died in police custody in September. Since then, foreign-based rights groups say hundreds have been killed by security forces and thousands arrested. In this episode, we look at the role athletes are playing in Iran's protests. When Afghanistan was under Taliban control in 1996-2001, the Taliban discriminated against and violently persecuted the Hazara Shi'a community—which they labeled as “heretical.” Subsequently, the Hazara community continued to face targeted attacks over the last 20 years by the Taliban and ISIS-K. In the first half of 2021 alone, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan documented at least 20 violent incidents targeting Hazara.Religious freedom conditions in Afghanistan have drastically deteriorated since the Taliban seized control of Afghanistan last month. This does not bode well for vulnerable minorities in Afghanistan such as the Hazara community. We discuss the current situation for the Hazara community in Afghanistan with Farkhondeh Akbari and Andrea Gittleman. Ms. Akbari is a PhD candidate at the Australian National University who is a member of the Hazara Shi'a community, and Ms. Gittleman is with the Simon-Skjodt Center for the Prevention of Genocide at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum.Read more USCIRF reporting on Afghanistan here.

In 1980 a child was born to a healthcare worker and a teacher in war torn Kabul, Afghanistan. That child grew up hearing stories about the "Golden Era"...what life was like before he was born. Instead of feeling resentful for not seeing those wonderful times, he decided to choose hope and equipped himself with the skills to help the people of his country get access to basic healthcare they needed. And so began his life of service. I met Dr. Fawad Akbari 7 years ago when he came to Canada under some difficult and unusual circumstances that might have broken many. Instead, he once again chose hope and continued his journey to develop his leadership capability. Today Fawad is responsible for Canadian global health programs that impact more than 3 million people in some of the most difficult parts of the world, including his home country of Afghanistan. Listen as we talk about his practice of servant leadership. Send me a message - https://anchor.fm/shakeel-bharmal/message
Can VP nominee Kamala Harris move past her controversial record as Attorney General? IS it that controversial, really? Or are we seeing a misinformation and skewed information campaign like 2016 all over again? Which specific policies in Joe Biden's plan ACTUALLY help black America - the black business owners, parents and more? We also talk about his plan for free community college and extending that to colleges and universities for some, since we know education is one of the barriers to closing the wealth gap. How DID Kanye West end up getting on the Presidential ballot in Tennessee? And with the help of a member of one of the Democratic royal families?! We're breaking it all down with one of the people who has actual power to change things that affect your everyday life - a State Senator. Since folks seem to sleep on state politicians, we've got yet another example of how THEY are the real MVPs when it comes to the mask mandates, Covid policies for you AND your kids (hello, back-to-school rules!), criminal justice reform in the form of restoring voting rights for ex-felons in the state, saving the voting rights of those arrested for protesting and plenty more. To get to work in the morning, Omar Akbari has to pass through a minimum of six sealed doors, including an air-locked vestibule. The UC Riverside entomologist studies the world's deadliest creature: the Aedes aegypti mosquito, whose bite transmits diseases that kill millions each year. But that's not the reason for all the extra security. Akbari isn't just studying mosquitoes—he's re-engineering them with self-destruct switches.
