Sara's journey is deep for it only to be only for 17years until this point. Sara and I hit all the high notes in her life as we discussed the time for youth Softball to the Pro's. Sara started her journey as most young people do. By trying out many different sport, but she came to fall in love with Softball very quickly. Even though she continued to play other sports to be a well rounded athlete. This is something many High level coaches and players say that is very important for kids to do. We talked about her High School years and the backwards college recruiting at the time. She went on to set many High school records at Eagan High School and in the state of Minnesota. Most of them were held by her High school coach at the time.  Sara new at young age she wanted to be a Gopher Player and her came true. We chatted about her time in Maroon and Gold and the Coaches, Players and staff that helped her along the way to be coming a B1G Champion, All B1G and All American. We looked backed at the ups and downs at the U in the first couple of years. (unfinished Business as we would say)  As Sara moved on to the Pro's we discussed that experience and how it shaped her future life after playing in the Pro's. It was a life's dream fulfilled as she got to rub elbows with some the greats of the game.  Sara is now a business owner with her former teammate in Eagan. Also, lives in Eagan with her husband and dog. Strike Zone Sports (SZS) is a Softball trainings center that teaches the skills of Pitching, Hitting and Defense to the next generation players in the state of MN. JANET REICH ELSBACH lives in a rural community in Western Massachusetts. She teaches writing to high school students and to adults with developmental disabilities and, for over ten years, was a counselor to new and growing families. She writes about how all the numerous things going on in the average life collide with making dinner on her blog A Raisin & a Porpoise. Janet is a graduate of Stanford University with a degree in Anthropology and a focus on writing and holds a Masters in Education from New York University. She has chased strange ingredients, healing nutrition, and good food all her life and is a regular contributor to the Berkshire Festival of Women Writers. Her writing has appeared on Food52, Modern Loss, Manifest Station, Role/Reboot, and Verily Magazine. Get the Book Extra Helping: https://www.amazon.com/Extra-Helping-Connecting-Building-Community/dp/161180602X/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=extra+helping&qid=1580484617&sr=8-1 Reviews about the Book “Extra Helping is a generous, nourishing, and luminous work.  More than a cookbook, it’s a reminder of the role food can play in connecting and healing us—especially  during difficult days. It is a timely and hopeful work, crafted with boundless heart and love.”—Dave Isay, founder of StoryCorps “Extra Helping is the definitive guide for those of us who express love through the gift of food. Liberally dredged in Janet’s warm, witty prose, you’ll want to devour both the writing and recipes like buckwheat-studded chocolate bark, richly spiced tofu chorizo, and chocolate pudding so silky it will make you weep with joy. These dishes travel easily to loved ones in need of TLC, but also risk becoming part of your everyday repertoire.”—Alanna Taylor-Tobin, author of Alternative Baker: Reinventing Dessert with Gluten-Free Grains and Flours   “Whether life is in joyful disarray or has been upended by sorrow, Extra Helping is the cookbook you need. A master class in the art of nurture, the gift of this volume is that simply leafing through its pages leaves the reader feeling soothed, calmed, and ready to offer support to friends, family, and community. If food is your preferred expression of love, you will feel instantly at home within these pages.”—Marisa McClellan, author of Naturally Sweet Food in Jars   “Finally, a book that gives us the courage to make a difference and the tools to get there. Now we can help our friends through the roughest year or even the roughest Thursday, whether it’s with congee, carnitas, ginger custard, or the greatest chocolate pudding I’ve ever tasted. Extra Helping will make you a better cook, a better friend, and a better human.”—Alana Chernila, author of Eating from the Ground Up   “There’s a ton of wisdom in this book. Truthfully, it’s not so much a cookbook as it is a manual about how to nurture with recipes as the supporting actors. But those recipes happen to be quite alluring. I’ve been immersed in recipes for forty years, and this lineup really offers a new slant. It made me want to go straight to the kitchen and start cooking.”—Sara Moulton, host of Sara’s Weeknight Meals and author of Sara Moulton’s Home Cooking 101   “Just reading Extra Helping is healing, as it gently talks you through the sort of sustenance that will get you through a tough spell, as well as provide you with enough support to help someone you care about in a meaningful way. Everything is restoratively delicious—the broths and soups are effortless and the hot drinks feel imperative. And in case you’re wondering, the cookies, meatballs, tiny pancakes, and teeny cakes all feel like exactly what I want to eat to feel well and good and happy, always.”—Maggie Battista, author of Food Gift Love "A small, quirky, and insanely kind collection, Elsbach's first cookbook combines elements of Mollie Katzen’s The Moosewood Cookbook and Mark Bittman’s How to Cook Everything oeuvres. With a unique tone and caring approach, Elsbach identifies eight different lifecycle occasions, from births to passings, that demand lovingly delivered food. Her audience is everyone who wants to help their friends and loved ones during such times, and she provides 70–plus recipes for doing just that."—Booklist, starred review  ======================  Request to Join the FREE Meredith Atwood Community & Coaching https://meredith-atwood-coaching.mn.co/ ======================  Buy Meredith’s Books: The Year of No Nonsense https://amzn.to/3su5qWp Triathlon for the Every Woman: https://amzn.to/3nOkjiH =======================   Follow Meredith Atwood & The Podcast on Social: Web: http://www.swimbikemom.com Instagram: http://instagram.com/swimbikemom   =======================  Want to Connect?  Email: same24hourspodcast@gmail.com =======================  Credits: Host & Production: Meredith Atwood Copyright 2017-2020, 2021 All Rights Reserved, Meredith Atwood, LLC

In part 2 of my Special Sauce interview with Sara Moulton, she plunges headfirst into the issues women face as chefs. "When I first moved to New York...I couldn't get a job. But not only that, about every five years there'd be an article in the New York Times saying, "Where are all the women chefs?" It pissed me off, because I'd be like, "I know where they are. Being kept down or going to California where it's far easier to get a job, because nobody will give them a job here." Here she is on why she thinks she lost her long-running show on the Food Network: "The way I see it is, competition and cleavage took over. I had cleavage, but they didn't want to see mine. But that's all right. And that's not what I was there for. I'll be honest, I was devastated." Sara also talks about checking in with women in the industry periodically: "I always talk to them and try to find out what's the deal, how we're doing, how are we moving forward? I mean, I'm no longer doing that. But, how are women chefs doing? What they say consistently is they're still not getting the same publicity, and they're still not getting the same real estate deals and backing for new restaurants. They're still being treated like second-class citizens." As for what she would tell a young woman chef about how to proceed: "The advice I would give to them is pretty much the same as what I used to [say]: 'Head West, young lady. California is so much better a place.'" As a mother of two children who has been married for a long time, I asked her what she tells women chefs about having it all: "That is still a really difficult question and answer. I have no idea. You either have to have a partner who is willing to stay home...I mean, Jody Adams, you know, from Rialto*, her husband stayed home...If you can set that up, yes, you can make it work. But...it's striking when you think that this is not an issue for a man to be working 80 hours a week and [have] a family. But it is for most women. That is where I always hit a wall. I have no answers except the one I just gave you. It's rare to find the person who's willing to just stay home." *Editor's note: Rialto shuttered in 2016. Adams is now chef and owner of the restaurants Porto, Saloniki, and TRADE. Sara Moulton is smart, savvy, talented and pulls no punches. Listen in and I'm sure you'll agree. ------ The transcript for this week's episode can be found over at Serious Eats.

This week's guest on Special Sauce is food television personality and pioneering chef Sara Moulton, who is as unpretentious as she is accomplished. And when I say accomplished I mean accomplished. Sara is currently the host of the PBS series Sara's Weeknight Meals and the co-host of Milk Street Radio. She previously was the host of the live television show Cooking Live on the Food Network for almost ten years. Suffice it to say, Sara should be familiar to anyone who has watched cooking shows on television. Want an example of her lack of pretense? Here is her take on leftovers: "I'd rather open up a refrigerator filled with leftovers than start with a blank canvas. Leftovers talk to me." Or how about this detail from one of her many food-related jobs in college: "I was a waitress at an all-night diner where we had to wear a DayGlo orange uniform and white nurse's shoes." It may have been the uniform, and it may just have been the job itself, but whatever it was, Sara's mother was horrified by her situation, and tried to help her in a way that would only make sense to a parent: "My mother wrote to Craig Claiborne and Julia Child, did not ask me, and asked them what her daughter should do if she wanted to become a chef." After her many years on television, I was surprised when I found out that Sara was a reluctant TV host. "I thought that was vulgar," she explains. "Being a good WASP, it's like, "Oh, then you're looking for attention." I also loved hearing the advice she'd give to guests on Cooking Live: "Smile constantly for no particular reason." As for her pioneering days as a young woman chef, Sara has some harrowing stories, but for those you're just going to have to tune into part 1 of her Special Sauce interview. *Ed note: For those of you wondering where part 2 of my Special Sauce interview with Matt Goulding is, we'll be publishing it in a couple of months. --- The transcript for this episode can be found over at Serious Eats.

I [had] recently separated from my partner at the time, and she insisted that she knew the perfect broken-heart saffron concoction. She made me a beautiful small glass of warm milk that she infused with saffron and a little bit of honey. It certainly warmed my heart.” We’ll also offer our recipe for quick pork tapas and a tip for cooking pasta in its sauce. Dr. Aaron Carroll explores the truth about peanut allergies, Lior Lev Sercarz takes us inside the world of spices and, as always, Christopher Kimball and Sara Moulton take your calls.

This week on Milk Street Radio, chef Ana Sortun unveils the secrets of Turkish cooking. “I think the very first time I went to Turkey, I was invited to go study with a couple of women. One lived in the southeast of Turkey, and she organized a potluck that was put on by her friends where they all prepared a dish that was really special to them,” Sortun says. “I tasted 30 of these dishes that day and I didn’t know what any of them were. I had never tasted anything like them before, so I didn’t necessarily feel like I had come home. But what I did know was that I wanted to understand what was behind them, [that] this was a really interesting way of cooking and that I really needed to know more.” We also take a look at a Vietnamese-style weeknight dinner with Andrea Nguyen, wine expert Stephen Meuse explores the sommelier’s romance with one wine, and we’ll offer our recipe for caramel oranges. This week on Milk Street Radio, we speak with Andy Ricker (Pok Pok) in Chiang Mai, Thailand. “Western food … builds flavor over time to come up with a monolithic, single, strong, rich flavor,” Ricker says. “Thai food and southeast Asian food, in general, tends to be this battle of different bright, salty, sweet, sour, hot, bitter (notes), all working together in various different roles in particular dishes. But they don’t meld to become one thing. Often (with) dishes here, you can taste everything that’s going on, all at once in a bite.” Also on today’s show, Dan Pashman of The Sporkful makes New Year’s resolutions, Adam Gopnik explores eating in difficult political times, and we present our quick sizzling greens recipe. This week on Milk Street Radio, we talk with food writer Michael Pollan—author of The Omnivore’s Dilemma and star of the Netflix series “Cooked.” “I don’t think people are quite aware how many marketing messages for food they see in a day,” Pollan says. “The total amount of money the government spends offering nutrition advice, the food pyramid, the eat 5 servings a day, the you know avoid trans-fats whatever it is, all that government spending which is in the three hundred million or so range was less then the marketing budget for one Pepsico, one product, one snack food, so you know the information is so imbalanced that this idea of a consumer democracy falls apart.” Dan Pashman of The Sporkful podcast considers waiting for your food. The Work of Teaching. Remember Cooking Live? As a young woman working three jobs while attending school full time Chef Sara Moulton's show was the highlight of my day. Every evening Sara guided me through simple, fresh, and healthy recipes. Unlike shows like The Great Chefs of San Francisco, these were recipes I actually wanted to try. And did. To this day I credit Sara with teaching me how to cook for myself, as do thousands of others. For almost 40 years Sara Moulton has worked in the culinary arts in just about every job you can imagine including restaurant chef, Executive Chef at Gourmet magazine until its demise in 2009, newspaper columnist, cookbook author, and television personality on The Food Network and Good Morning America. Her shows still appear regularly in reruns and her new show, Sara's Weeknight Meals, appears regularly on PBS and the Create channel, picking up where Food Network's Cooking Live and Sara's Secrets left off. Her new book, Home Cooking 101: How To Make Everything Taste Better is a culmination of numerous tips, tricks, and recipes she's collected over the years. A MUST for anyone who makes dinner. How did she end up a teacher? As with so many female chefs, Sara left restaurants when she realized she wanted to have kids. Her journey took her from stints as a food stylist for Julia Child, to Gourmet, to work as an instructor at Peter Kump's Cooking School in NYC. Teaching caused her to fall in love again with food. The passion she gained from showing someone how to create a dish, giving someone that knowledge, stayed with her and became her life's work. During her visit to The Happy Cook as part of a book tour sponsored by Chantal cookware, I was fortunate enough to sit with Sara and talk about it all. Her start at The Food Network and how she went from a deer in the headlights to the natural and nurturing on-air teacher we are all familiar with. What was the lynchpin? We also discuss how Cooking Live was in fact LIVE and the challenges that presents. How on-air mistakes actually help beginning cooks by showing real-life instances of times when you have to become MacGyver in the kitchen. How Julia Child would make mistakes on purpose during her television shows for just this reason. We also discuss how The Food Network has changed into something way more competitive and cutthroat since she was so unceremoniously let go. Changed for the better? I'm not so sure. How did she learn to become a great teacher? Is there a difference between teaching adults and children? What was the ultimate goal of her show Cooking Live? What did she avoid doing while on the air? Who were some of her famous guests and why did The Food Network use her show as an audition tape for new talent? What is her weakness in cookware stores? What are her thoughts on Blue Apron? What was Julia Child really like? You'll have to listen to find out. We also discuss her work as co-founder of the New York Women's Culinary Alliance. Why is this group still so necessary in 2016? How can we make its founding mission of networking and education for culinary women even more widespread? We covered so much in this short talk and I'm honored Chef Sara Moulton took time out of her busy 2-day visit to talk with me. Enjoy! Then go buy her book on Amazon, and check out her show on PBS, and search her website for videos and recipes. Get cooking people!
