HEADLINE: Pangea's Mega-Monsoons, Coal Formation, and the Unclassifiable Tully Monster BOOK TITLE: Other Lands, a journey through Earth's Extinct Worlds GUEST AUTHOR NAME: Thomas Halliday 200-WORD SUMMARY: This segment examines the Permian and Carboniferous eras. In the Permian (253 million years ago), the single supercontinent Pangea caused a mega-monsoon system involving extreme seasonal wetness and dryness. Sites like Moradi, Niger, show creatures adapted to this arid environment. Organisms included the bulk herbivore Umoist and the apex predator Gorgonops, a close relative of mammals with large canines. This period was immediately followed by the "Great Dying," the largest mass extinction event in Earth's history. The Carboniferous (390 million years ago) saw the first extensive forests. As trees fell into vast, tropical swamps, the water inhibited decay, leading to the preservation of organic material that eventually formed the world's coal deposits. This process sequestered carbon, contributing to lower atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations later in history. The final topic is the Tully Monster(Tullimonstrum), a small, torpedo-shaped creature with eyes on stalks that remains a profound paleontological mystery. It is intensely debated whether this organism is a vertebrate, and because it has no known descendants, it is classified as an evolutionary experiment that did not pan out.

In the contemporary world, political violence has been an unavoidable issue for everyone. It is therefore essential to criticize political violence in a textured way. The Iraqi Ba'th state's Anfāl operations (1987-1991) is one of the twentieth century's ultimate acts of destruction of the possibility of being human. It remains the first and only crime of state in the Middle East to be tried under the 1948 UN Genocide Convention, the 1950 Nuremberg Principles, and the 1969 Iraqi Penal Code and to be recognized as genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes in Baghdad between 2006 and 2007.  Being Human: Political Modernity and Hospitality in Kurdistan-Iraq (Rutgers UP, 2024) offers an unprecedented pathway to the study of political violence. It is a sweeping work of anthropological hospitality, returning to the Anfāl operations as the violence of political modernity only to turn to the human survivors' hospitality and acts of translation - testimonial narratives, law, politics, archive, poetry, artworks, museums, memorials, symbolic cemeteries, and infinite pursuit of justice in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq.  Being Human gathers together social sciences, humanities, and the arts to understand modernity's violence and its living on. Fazil Moradi is Visiting Associate Professor at Faculty of Humanities, University of Johannesburg; Associate Researcher at the Institute for Social Anthropology, Austrian Academy of Sciences; and Affiliated Scholar at the Center for the Study of the Holocaust, Genocide, and Crimes against Humanity at the Ralph Bunche Institute for International Studies, Graduate Center—City University of New York. In this episode, we chat with Dr. Pouria Moradi, a renowned plastic surgeon and author of NORMAL: A Plastic Surgeon's Letter to His Daughters About Body Image. The conversation delves into the complex world of plastic surgery, challenging the typical associations with procedures like breast augmentations and facelifts. Instead, Dr. Moradi emphasises how plastic surgery can help women of all ages feel "normal," making it a significant part of some women's aging well journey. The discussion touches on the meaning of "normal" from a plastic surgeon's perspective, exploring why Dr. Moradi chose this term for his book title. He shares insights into life as a plastic surgeon, the reactions he receives when he discusses his profession, and the most common cosmetic procedures that women seek, highlighting how these trends have evolved over time. For women considering a facelift, Dr. Moradi breaks down the process, including what to expect, the costs, downtime, risks, and who the ideal candidates are. He also shares stories of women who have undergone surgery and discusses the future of plastic surgery, including exciting new advancements in the field. The discussion is dedicated to women who choose plastic surgery, emphasising that it's not always about "looking better" but about feeling normal and empowered. At The Aging Project, the message is clear: women should feel no guilt or shame in making choices that are right for them, whether that includes plastic surgery or not. The episode concludes with a reminder to age with kindness—towards ourselves and others. For artist Nazanin Moradi, who was brought up in Iran where women are “second-class citizens in every sense,” reversing the “unfair” gender roles is paramount. In her new project, the multidisciplinary artist challenges male domination and toxic masculinity, within a fragmented historical context where fantasy meets rebellion. She does this by changing the narrative of ancient Mesopotamian mythology, fixating on the legendary battle where the supremely powerful dragon goddess of oceans Tiamat, was killed by the storm god Marduk. Sahar Zand spends time with Nazanin as she embarks on the ambitious project.

Episode 208 hosts Dr Pouria Moradi (Plastic Surgeon & Reconstructive Surgeon from Sydney, Australia) & Sheri-lee Knoop (Registered Nurse & President of the Cosmetic Nurses Association from Perth, Australia) Pouria and Sheri-Lee joined us to share their thoughts and insights into the proposed new Australia cosmetic regulations that have been announced by AHPRA (the Australian health practitioner regulator). These new rules affect both surgeons and non-surgical practitioners and come into force on July 1st 2023.  For years there have been arguments between the various cosmetic stakeholders over which practitioners have the right to treat patients, who can and can't offer the various procedures and heated debates over the standards expected of cosmetic practioners. Last year's enquiry by AHPRA into cosmetic surgery led to a full scale review of all cosmetic procedures. This has culminated in a set of sweeping new regulations - and some have voiced that it's a self-inflicted wound on an industry that couldn't govern itself. The new rules have left many in the industry confused and extremely unhappy about what is proposed, arguing that it neither improves patient safety whilst also significantly impacting on practitioners livelihoods. We explore: Our guests backgrounds Who AHPRA are The background to how and why these new guidelines have come about Why the proposals are such a major shakeup for the cosmetic industry The new surgical requirements including: The need for GP referral to be seen by a plastic surgeon The need for two consultations prior to surgery The need for a cooling off period before surgery The need for the psychological assessment of patients Significant changes to how social media can be used by plastic surgeons The new non-surgical requirements including: Changes to the consent process including explicit financial consent and supplying patients with a copy of the document The requirement for injectors to assess patients for body dysmorphic disorder The back and forth rulings and position statements regarding the role of different grades of nurses including enrolled nurses & nurse practitioners In a first for Inside Aesthetics, we are calling on ALL stakeholders, practitioners, injectors, clinic owners, those who work in the industry and the public to give their opinion on what they think of the new proposed guidelines. This week's guest is Rohini Moradi, a teacher of Akasha and a spiritual explorer who I have the pleasure to talk to about her story and our spiritual selves. Her childhood was spent wrapped up in community, in between chants, breath work, body cleansing and yoga practices in a Hindu temple ran by her father in Iran, until the Muslim revolution made them flee the country. Cut to, after the death of her daughter, when she had to contemplate the idea that “everything is about love” when she was angry and couldn't comprehend what was happening to her. As she says, “I had to re-explore and find my meaning …I didn't want my heart to close and it was starting to close”.In finding healing, she found the akashic records and also, her childhood upbringing “somehow made sense all of a sudden” because they are all practices that teach us to be aware of “the fabric of the universe while we are creating our lives in this reality”.HIGHLIGHTS Rohini's upbringingThe trauma of losing a daughterThe dogma of religionShamanic healingAkashic recordsAncient hindu scripturesWhat is Akasha?Making the chatter go awayInner universeCold waterTrustComing back to oneselfABOUT ROHINIRohini is internationally recognized as a teacher of the Akasha and spiritual explorer. What if you could rewrite a part of history? What would you change, and where would you start? For multidisciplinary artist Nazanin Moradi, who was brought up in the Islamic Republic of Iran where women are, “second-class citizens in every sense,” the answer is easy; she would start at the very beginning of “time” to reverse the “unfair” gender roles. Over a period of six months, reporter Sahar Zand spends time with Nazanin at various locations in London to find out how she embarks on the ambitious project, and how it's affected by the protests in Iran, which take place as she nears the end of her work. Through the mediums of textile design, interpretive dance, digital editing, collage, painting and sculpture, Nazanin rebels against social conventions by using her own body through the creative process.
