Carrie Moore came to basketball later than most of her peers, when a friend and neighbor's love of the game rubbed off on her. She quickly made up for lost time, learning from her high school coach Frank Orlando, who'd go on to win almost 800 games. Carrie became a leader on the floor and then scored over 2,000 points at Western Michigan University, where she led the nation in points per game in her senior year. After graduating, Carrie's sharp shooting earned her a spot in the WNBA, where she played for the Phoenix Mercury and Chicago Sky. Carrie also played pro in Poland. Once she called time on her playing career, Carrie moved from the floor to the sideline. She cut her coaching teeth in assistant roles at Creighton, Princeton, Michigan, and North Carolina, also overseeing recruiting. After Kathy Delaney-Smith announced her retirement after 40 years as head coach at Harvard, the Crimson tapped Carrie to replace her after she helped Michigan reach the Elite Eight. In her first season, Carrie led Harvard to 20 wins and a run in the WNIT.In this episode, Carrie reveals:How legendary high school coach Frank Orlando became like a grandfatherWhy she adopted his “believe it” motto and uses it at HarvardWhat she learned from Courtney Banghart aboutHow she coaches young women to win the game of lifeWhich 4 core values guide the Harvard women's basketball programHow she recruits effectively in the age of NIL and the Transfer PortalKeep up with Carrie's journey and Harvard women's basketball by following her on Twitter at  @CoachMoore33

It may seem obvious, but the Harvard women's team is full of high achievers. Keeping a group of type A athletes in a good mental state is a big priority for Morawski and you can hear it in all the ways she tries to support her women. It starts with making practice a happy place for them. Morawski tells us how there are times when she has to trick them into the work, and gives a great example of an amazing race set that they did this season. The foundation of joy at practice is just the beginning of the athlete support. They have weekly team meetings and a speaker series, where athletes present on a variety of experiences that benefit the whole team. Morawski touches on recruiting, balance, and even a little bit on her own swimming at Harvard. This is a great interview, filled with usable information for coaches and athletes. Enjoy!

He has taught at universities and hospitals across the United States and around the world, including Europe, Africa, Russia, Australia, Israel, and China.  Check out Bessel van der Kolk's latest book, “The Body Keeps the Score: Brain, Mind, and Body in the Healing of Trauma” at https://www.amazon.com/Body-Keeps-Sco... ––––––◊◊◊◊◊–––––– What is trauma? First, comes tragedy, right out of the blue, walloping our hearts, minds & bodies, sending our lives reeling with typically no warning. It could be a terrible car accident, or something that hits us square in the emotions, like being subjected to or even just witnessing cruelties. When we are victims of tragedy, trauma ensues. To be more specific, trauma can be defined as a response that results from exposure to an incident or a series of events that are so emotionally disturbing or perceived to be so life-threatening that it has lasting effects on one's mental, physical, social, emotional, and/or spiritual balance.  In other words, something happens that threatens the very fabric of our lives, and we then get to deal with the very understandable emotional fall-out, potentially for the rest of our lives. We know this is heavy stuff, but considering that over 2/3 of our population has experienced a traumatic event at one point in their lives, and over 8 million people in the US alone suffer from PTSD, we feel the need to talk about it. And not just talk about what it is and how it can affect us, but also to share some techniques and strategies for dealing with trauma that have been scientifically researched and proven to be effective. We have to remind our listeners that we are not therapists, we are not licensed health professionals in any sense. We are just two more people who have survived traumas, had some pretty intense life experiences and are fortunate to be alive and well enough to speak of it.  We speak of it from personal experience not from clinical expertise, and we urge you to not take anything we say in this podcast as legal or medical advice, but rather as personal observations.   Sharing is the first step to healing, but if you or a loved one are suffering the effects of trauma, we strongly encourage you to seek out real qualified help, from a professional who will understand your needs and provide you with the tools & guidance to work on healing all of those unseen wounds.  And if this episode gives you a better idea of what it is you're going through and why, and that there is hope for healing with an array of techniques, then we will consider ourselves fortunate to have been able to help someone.  To that end, we have included a wealth of resources in the notes of this episode; from books and videos to celebrated practitioners, we urge you to check out the links and begin to map your path to healing. Ok, so there are many kinds of trauma that can occur. Ranging from some kind of accident, to natural catastrophes, to being subjected to interpersonal violence. It can be a one-time event (like an accident), a prolonged event (such as war), or a series of events ( like being subjected to long-term abuse).  Trauma that affects a community or a country is called collective trauma, and being close to someone who has been traumatized can cause it's own trauma, called secondary trauma. It's all very real and as you have probably seen in your own lives it can have incredibly long lasting consequences, sometimes generational.  In fact, so much of our human history can be defined as a litany of inherited generational trauma.   However, since there are so very permutations of trauma, and this is a podcast focused primarily on relationship health, we are going to narrow our focus to what happens when traumatic experiences threaten our romantic relationships, and what we can do to strengthen our connections & heal from the pain we've experienced. In relationships, there are two 2 categories of trauma that will most commonly affect us; life trauma and unhealed relationship trauma. Life trauma refers to those out-of-the-blue occurrences, whereas unhealed relationship trauma refers to when we have not yet fully processed and moved on from trauma occurring within a relationship, often a previous one. So what are the ways we can be affected by these different kinds of traumas? (How does it affect us?) * physically drained from constant stress responses     * fight/flight/freeze response is an automatic state now     * toxic relationships are stressful for mind & body alike     * constant stress can cause inflammation, heart attack, chronic pain, arthritis, weakened immune system * dissociation: disconnected from the world or your life     * head-in-the-clouds, non-presence     * feeling your life is a movie you're watching on a screen (simulation)     * disrupted perception memory processing & emotions     * like the traumatic event is still happening. * mental exhaustion at a chemical level     * adrenaline & cortisol are supposed to be short-term     * chemical overload:  can't concentrate, can't remember, can't sort out feelings     * frustration can be a constant * trust problems     * doubting people, even ones you know & love     * walls, non-belief, paranoia, doubting people's motives * risk junkie, taking chances to evade the bad feels     * sensations (rush) you can finally feel     * self-destructive rushed like sex & drug addiction     * any way to clear your mind of the nagging problems you can't address * a constant feeling of shame     * GUILT: feel bad about something you did     * SHAME: feel bad about who or what you are     * much self-blame about things not working out better     * living in regret & “if only” thoughts     * guilt/shame overload can worsen physical/psych effects of trauma * physical reaction to emotional triggers     * trauma “nostalgia”     * some small stimulus bring an outsized reaction     * amygdala produces neurotransmitter Acetylcholine      * shortness breath, sweating, anxiety, sickness when smell, shaking in a topic of conversation, nervous convulsing     * potential for violence * risk overeating, overproduction of adrenaline, anxiety etc can be further risk factors that make matters worse How does it affect those around us? * it can be generational,      * meaning the effects of trauma can be passed on from parents, grandparents, etc, through dysfunctional interactions & training children to view life through a lens that the world around them is not safe and may never be safe. * potential substance abuse & other abuses can cause havoc in family, work, friends * partner can experience secondary trauma     * also known as vicarious trauma      * experience many of the same effects as the person who was injured: fear, exhaustion, helplessness, hopelessness, anger, anxiety, etc. * it can generate its own ptsd * untreated ptsd, the effects get worse over time How can we process & manage it? There are two schools of thought about trauma;   1) it can be cured (removed)  2) it cannot be cured, only treated & the mind/body rewired to circumvent it. The key is to find something that allow the sense of deceptiveness & self-loathing to be controlled * notice the incongruence between the stimulus (situation) & the response (your whack-ass flipout) * Always remember that healing doesn't work in a straight line * be kind to yourself.  healing, self-love, self compassion, patience * try a therapy like EMDR (eye movement desensitization & reprocessing)     * patient recalls traumatic event, therapist makes them follow fingers with eyes     * seems like b.s. but the results speak for themselves     * changes the brain circuitry to interpret your currently reality from different POV     * allows people to let go of long-ago events, no longer in the now * try things like Yoga     * deepen your mind-body connection, raise awareness     * greater relationship with your internal sensory system     * allows us to minimize the focus on our round and round thought process, while feeling more connected to what our bodies are actually feeling. and if our body feels safe in the moment, that can help train our brains to be less “on guard”.     * According to Dr. Bessel van der Kolk it's proven more effective for ptsd than any of the studied drugs (prozac, zoloft, many others) * try things like Theater & Movement     * playing different roles in your body can help your relationship to yourself     * “playback theater” is a movement that uses this premise     * but all theater can be ecstatic and cathartic         * We did the John Gilkey “Idiot Workshop”, where he pushed us to dig deeper for expressions of ourselves we typically aren't comfortable portraying. I had a breakthrough when I burst out that I didn't want to be “cute” any more. After letting that sit with me for a few days & weeks, I realized that I had been filling a de facto “cute” role all my life, largely due to how it helped keep me safe. But now that I'm stronger & more confident, I don't need to keep that as my primary identity. There are so many facets to who I am, and I no longer need to limit myself to what used to keep me safe.     * Aristotle argued that tragedy cleansed the heart through pity and terror, purging us of our petty concerns and worries by making us aware that there can be nobility in suffering. He called this experience 'catharsis'. * try things like Neural Feedback (no really!)      * electrical/photon impulses into the brain can be like a neurochemical hard-reset     * shaping the brain to have a different configuration, open to new input * try things like Psychedelic therapy (guided MDMA sessions for trauma)     * legal grey area     * gaining traction     * gotta be legit, psych-guided, not just trippin' at a friend's house     * (ok maybe there's some benefit to the friend's house trip but come on)     * a meta-view can be achieved, a removal from the traumatic experience     *     * (we have friends)     *  BOTTOM LINE: DIFFERENT PEOPLE REQUIRE DIFFERENT APPROACHES. If you are working through trauma, you may find yourself drawn to one of these methods, or you might benefit from incorporating several of them. And it can change, both as you make progress and also as you move through different phases of your life. the main goal is to recognize what you're struggling with, accept that needing help is nothing to be ashamed of, and start finding ways to heal your wounds. Speaking of healing wounds, we had the pleasure of speaking with Mark Cunningham, a military veteran and therapist based in Fort Collins CO. We will be sharing the full interview with you all later in the season, but we wanted to do a public service announcement in this episode because Mark is helping to promote a documentary called “Love After War”, produced & directed by sexologist Dr. Mitchell Tepper. “Love After War” introduces the viewer to veterans and their partners who have had to fight the battle to save their relationships after suffering catastrophic injuries dealt in combat. It's heart-wrenching, candid, and inspiring, so we hope you get a chance to support the film. Mark is hosting a special screening at Colorado State University on March 29, 2022. If you're listening to the podcast right after it came out, that means you have two weeks to make plans! And if you aren't able to pop over to Fort Collins the day of, you can sign up to get notifications of screenings in your area, or even sign up to host one yourself!  The website is loveafterwar.org, and we'll leave a link directly in the description. So please check it out and support this film any way you can.

Burning out bright is what women do best. We are the people in this world who carry everything on our shoulders and do everything for everyone all the time. Everyone except for ourselves. Self-care is some thing I'm terrible at and some thing that I know a lot of other women are terrible at. And one of the things I've resolved in the last two years to get better at. But it doesn't stop me from burning out. I always take on too much. And trying to figure out how to rewire my brain in order to take on less is more of a challenge than I ever thought.Challenging my burnout is especially difficult when I see other moms and other women online doing better than me and taking on more than me and not burning out. But that's not the truth, is it? The truth is that women everywhere are burning out. It's just a fact. Why is it that women are so burnt out? It's not just because we're doing too much, it's because we're doing too much and trying to fight that burn out at the same time. We're going about this Burnout thing totally wrong. That's why this week I'm talking with Sarah Lacey. She's the expert on Burnout.Sarah Lacy is the founder and CEO of Chairman Me. She has a remarkable backstory: Born as the nineteenth of her father's twenty-three children, Koofi was left to die from exposure as a baby girl. She survived and witnessed during her childhood father's and brother's deaths from political unrest. She was forced to leave medical school when the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 1996 and banned the education of women and girls, and, soon after her own daughters were born, her husband died from tuberculosis he contracted while a political prisoner in a Taliban jail. After the new Afghan government was formed after the 2001 U.S.-led invasion, Koofi ran for and won a seat in the Afghan parliament. She currently represents the Badakshan region in northeastern Afghanistan and is a leading advocate for the rights of women and girls. Koofi has also written a recently published memoir, The Favored Daughter, about her life and her journey into politics.Koofi delivered the closing remarks at the Harvard Women's Law Association's annual conference. (Special thanks to the association's president and conference organizer, Stephanie Davidson, for arranging the interview.) Alan Rozenshtein spoke with Koofi at her snowed-in hotel about the current state of Afghanistan and the challenges facing her country. Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Does feminism conflict with progressive critiques of the criminal justice system?   Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law and host of the weekly podcast, Good Law | Bad Law, is joined by author and law professor, Aya Gruber, to discuss her new book, The Feminist War on Crime: The Unexpected Role of Women’s Liberation in Mass Incarceration, as well as the broader issues and trendlines of today.   In today’s episode, Aaron and Aya talk about the issues of gendered crimes and gender justice, law reform and policing, feminist progress, harm and social problems, issues of race, oppression and inequality, crime control, prison abolishment and more. Discussing justice in society, Aya and Aaron question where and how society should apply its resources, the institutions of prisons, punishment in this country, and how these relate to the origins of the criminal justice system.   The Feminist War on Crime documents the failure of the state to combat sexual and domestic violence through law and punishment. Throughout her book and today’s conversation, Aya contends the importance of abandoning conventional feminist wisdom, of fighting violence against women without reinforcing the American prison state, and of using criminalization as a technique of last – not first – resort. Aya asserts that many feminists grapple with the problem of hyper-incarceration in the United States, and yet that commentators on gender crime continue to assert that criminal law is not tough enough. This punitive impulse, Aya explains, is dangerous and counterproductive. Professor Gruber argues that in the quest to secure women’s protection from domestic violence and rape, American feminists have become soldiers in the war on crime by emphasizing white female victimhood, expanding the power of police and prosecutors, touting the problem-solving power of incarceration, and diverting resources toward law enforcement and away from marginalized communities. Throughout today’s discussion, Aya elaborates on these concepts and others.   Professor Gruber received her B.A. in philosophy from U.C. Berkeley and her J.D. from Harvard Law. At Harvard, Aya was an editor on the Harvard Women’s Law Journal as well as the Harvard International Law journal and founded the Interracial Law Students’ Association. After law school, Professor Gruber clerked for U.S. District Court judge James L. King in Miami and then served as a felony trial attorney with the Public Defender Service in Washington, D.C. and the Federal Public Defender in Miami. Aya joined the University of Colorado faculty in 2010. She currently teaches and writes in the areas of criminal law and procedure, critical theory, feminism, and comparative/international law; her scholarship focuses primarily on feminist efforts to strengthen criminal law responses to crimes against women.   To learn more about Aya, please visit her bio page here. Changing Your Eating Habits for the Better Today’s podcast is all about Intermittent Fasting, what it is, how to do it, and how it’s actually hit the mainstream. Seems to me that now is a good time to try Intermittent Fasting - you won’t have the usual temptations to cheat and/or give up. I talk about 4 main types of fasting and a couple of other variations on those as well. The easiest (I think) to do is the Restricted Eating Window Diet (REWD) which the Harvard Women’s Health Watch Newsletter calls Daily Timed Fasting. That is eating usual food during an 8 hour timeframe and fasting for the other 16 hours of the day. That’s the kind that I do. Then there is the 3:4 Diet where you fast for 3 days out of the week (24 hours at a time). I think that’s a bit more difficult to do. The Low-Calorie Diet where you limit your calories to 500-700 per day on 3 days a week. And the fourth type is a combination of the Daily Timed / REWD and the Low-Calorie diets. For that you do the 8:16 hour windows and limit your calories on 2-3 out of the 7 days per week. Don’t forget to drink your usual amount of water and keep up your exercising, especially doing strength training. As I said earlier - being at home as we are now will actually make it easier to transition to Intermittent Fasting and build it into your daily life. As always, if you have any special health issues you should check with your doctor / health professional before starting any of these diets. Please let me know if you try Intermittent Fasting and how it’s working for you. Would you like to feel less guilty about the chocolates you ate on Valentine’s Day? Chocolate can be good for you, or at least the plant compounds called cocoa flavonoids can be, but there are just as many caveats as health benefits. The chocolate needs to be dark and processed in such a way that doesn’t diminish the power of its flavenols, which have antioxidant qualities, and, according to Cleveland Clinic, have other potential influences on vascular health. Harvard Women’s Health Watch also reports on chocolate’s effects on the brain. In a Harvard study, older adults who drank two cups of cocoa a day for 30 days had improved blood flow to parts of their brain needed for memory and thinking. However, in order to consume the amount used in the studies, people would need to eat eight bars of dark chocolate every day. To get the advantages

According to the Harvard Women's Health Watch, one adverse effect of not getting enough sleep is a compromised immune system.  Both sleep and your circadian system exert a strong regulatory influence on immune functions. One of the things I learned was that if I were applying to Harvard today, I would have had a lot less chance of getting in, as the bar has been raised over the past couple decades.  Julia added real value on Day One. Little did I know, but she has deep graphic design experience, and she helped me dramatically improve a mailer I was designing that day.  Julia has worked as a Researcher-Writer for Let’s Go and had actual internships in Belgium, Spain, Australia, and South-east Asia. In this episode, we turned the tables and Julia interviewed me, mostly about the advice I’d give to my college-age self, and related topics. It was a lot of fun being interviewed by Julia, and I hope you find it useful: maybe you’ll even share the episode with a current college student.

Cindy Kolbe’s upcoming memoir, Struggling with Serendipity, shares a surprising story. When her daughter Beth was fourteen, Cindy fell asleep at the wheel on the way home from her son’s college concert. As the car flipped three times across an Ohio field, Beth’s spinal cord ripped along with Cindy’s identity as a mom. When told of her paralysis from the chest down, Beth paused only a moment before simply responding, “Let’s talk about what I can do.” Cindy narrates their intertwined stories: a shy but determined teenager fighting the harsh physical challenges of quadriplegia and a heartsick mom battling guilt, pain, and depression. In the pool for physical therapy, Beth gradually learns how to float. Not a swimmer before the accident, she finds freedom in the water at a time when every movement on land is grueling. She decides to master the forward freestyle stroke with hands that don’t work, weak arms, and useless legs. She also sets her sights on independence, against all odds. High school swim meets and Paralympic competitions across the country precede the invitation to join the varsity Harvard Women's Swimming and Diving team as the first with a visible disability. Her daughter’s freshman year of college, Cindy lives off campus near Harvard for transition support, far away from their small Ohio hometown. Extraordinary events domino as Beth’s confidence blooms, from Ohio to Seattle, Harvard, Stanford Law, Capitol Hill, China, and around the world. A whirlwind narrative leads up to the end of an era that transforms them both in unexpected ways. In the past twelve months, Cindy has published 38 articles in a variety of media (listed on her Press and News web page), gained 10K Twitter followers, and created a new website with a weekly blog. A lifelong disability advocate—even before Beth’s injury— Cindy ran a nonprofit, managed group homes, and taught literacy to adults with disabilities. Beth works long days as a health policy lawyer at her office in Washington, DC, on K Street. She lives independently with no assistant, a rare feat for those with quadriplegia. Beth and Cindy actively mentor and volunteer, grateful for opportunities to give back to the amazing disability community.
