Maria Asp is the director of education and community engagement with the Speaking Out Collective. She's a huge fan of Frank Theatre, which for more than 30 years has focused on mounting plays that address social, cultural and political issues. The theater is staging its first live production since the onset of the pandemic, and the new play by former Twin Cities resident Trista Baldwin is certain to spark discussion.  “FETAL” is set in a clinic that provides abortions in Texas on June 24, 2022 — the day the U.S. Supreme Court overturned the right to an abortion through the Dobbs ruling. The show focuses on three women in the waiting room that morning, each with a radically different reproductive journey, as well as a female health care provider.  Asp is excited to see both the show and the space: Frank Theatre is staging this show in an intimate setting within their rehearsal space on the second floor of the Ivy Building for the Arts in south Minneapolis. The show runs Oct. 27 through Nov. 19. Artist Preston Drum of Burnsville says his whole family was drawn in by the Chronicles of the Chronic exhibit at the Rochester Art Center.  Curated by Zoe Cinel, this group show celebrates the creativity of people living with chronic illness.  The exhibit includes works by local, national and international artists, responding to the subject of chronic illness through a range of media, including 2D, audio, film and interactive works.  “One might walk into the show and see it as a disparate pairing of artworks because they are all different media and all different colors and all different types of expression,” says Drum. “But I think that variety brought a sense of cohesion to the show because everyone lives with their own chronic illness in their own way.”Drum says his children liked the color and tactile experience of the show. He also noted that one corner of the one-room exhibit offers a place to sit and rest, engage in a weaving activity, read literature and take in the view. The exhibit is open through April, 2024. The next virtual program, including Cinel and three of the artists, will be Dec. 2 at 1 p.m.Art lover Veronica Bedon recommends a visit to two arts-driven Minneapolis events on Saturday for Día de Muertos. At the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, there will be a community altar created by local artist Mónica Vega. The free, family-friendly event Saturday includes music, dance, art-making and food. That event runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. That event is in partnership with Minneapolis-based Latine organization Centro Tyrone Guzman. Vega has created ofrendas at Mia and Centro for Roxana Linares Arrieta, former Centro executive director, who passed away in August. A mile and a half away is a celebration at the Midtown Global Market, which features live music, dance, ofrendas, activities and food for purchase. That event runs from noon to 3 p.m.

Three years ago, the world watched as Lake Street in Minneapolis sustained significant damage during the protests that followed the murder of George Floyd. Some business owners lost everything. But with the help of their neighbors, many of those businesses cleaned up, came back and insisted that justice be both a part and a goal of the process. In Focus BIPOC businesses' inclusion in Minnesota's economy Hear an In Focus conversation hosted by MPR News host Angela Davis, recorded live on June 6 in front of a live audience at the Hook and Ladder Theater and Lounge in Minneapolis, where business owners and community leaders talked about what Lake Street's rebirth can teach us about making sure recovery is equitable and accessible to all. Guests: Manny Gonzalez, co-owner of Manny's Tortas. Gonzalez, a Mexican immigrant who opened the first Mexican market in south Minneapolis in 1999, explained how 2020 was one of the most difficult years for his three businesses on Lake Street due to the pandemic and the protests. His resilience and service to the community, even when his businesses were closed, helped him succeed today. Elias Usso, owner of Seward Pharmacy. Usso talked about moving his family from Sacramento, Calif. to Minneapolis, how they lost almost everything due to the 2020 protests and how his neighbors on Lake Street kept him going. Andy Hestness, executive director of Redesign, a nonprofit community development corporation that took part in the restoration of the Coliseum building, a beacon for local businesses and BIPOC entrepreneurs along East Lake Street. Hestness detailed the damage the Coliseum suffered during the unrest and how Redesign found an opportunity to save it after the property owners wanted to tear it down. Yusra Mohamud, business advisor at Lake Street Council. Mohamud told the story of how Lake Street started off, how the “We Love Lake Street” initiative raised $12 million for the community and what equitable efforts were made to make sure the recovery would happen. Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS. What drove you as a business owner to rebuild and reopen? Usso: We lost almost everything … everything that we built. … It's Minneapolis, you know, we'll be back. This is the city I believe in. This is Lake Street, where immigrants come and thrive, where you feel welcomed, where you feel [at] home. And and even if you lose everything, there are people in Minneapolis that keep you up. The silver lining … our neighbors that came to bring us up and uplift us to where we are right now. And they keep on supporting us. So it was the most difficult time for all of us, you know? … The City of Minneapolis, the people, the force in Minneapolis, are the most amazing people. And that's what keeps us going … where you feel welcome as an immigrant, where you feel home. Am I going to come back and reopen this business, and then go through this again? Three years ago, the world watched as Lake Street in Minneapolis sustained significant damage during the protests that followed the murder of George Floyd. Some business owners lost everything. But with the help of their neighbors, many of those businesses cleaned up, came back and insisted that justice be both a part and a goal of the process. In Focus BIPOC businesses' inclusion in Minnesota's economy Hear an In Focus conversation hosted by MPR News host Angela Davis, recorded live on June 6 in front of a live audience at the Hook and Ladder Theater and Lounge in Minneapolis, where business owners and community leaders talked about what Lake Street's rebirth can teach us about making sure recovery is equitable and accessible to all.Guests: Manny Gonzalez, co-owner of Manny's Tortas. Gonzalez, a Mexican immigrant who opened the first Mexican market in south Minneapolis in 1999, explained how 2020 was one of the most difficult years for his three businesses on Lake Street due to the pandemic and the protests. His resilience and service to the community, even when his businesses were closed, helped him succeed today.Elias Usso, owner of Seward Pharmacy. Usso talked about moving his family from Sacramento, Calif. to Minneapolis, how they lost almost everything due to the 2020 protests and how his neighbors on Lake Street kept him going.Andy Hestness, executive director of Redesign, a nonprofit community development corporation that took part in the restoration of the Coliseum building, a beacon for local businesses and BIPOC entrepreneurs along East Lake Street. Hestness detailed the damage the Coliseum suffered during the unrest and how Redesign found an opportunity to save it after the property owners wanted to tear it down.Yusra Mohamud, business advisor at Lake Street Council. Mohamud told the story of how Lake Street started off, how the “We Love Lake Street” initiative raised $12 million for the community and what equitable efforts were made to make sure the recovery would happen.Subscribe to the MPR News with Angela Davis podcast on: Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Spotify or RSS.What drove you as a business owner to rebuild and reopen?Usso: We lost almost everything … everything that we built. And that's what keeps us going … where you feel welcome as an immigrant, where you feel home.Am I going to come back and reopen this business, and then go through this again? And I said, “if I don't do it, who will come back and do it?” Because it's incumbent on us, all of us, to just come back and reopen and keep this going as a society. That is what I believe. And Lake Street is very, very important … as an immigrant, as a minority, and as the most vibrant street that you can find in Minneapolis. The world is watching us. Gonzalez: I live in Eagan. How to Build a Diverse Network and Why it's Good for BusinessThis #PoisedforExit episode featured an interview with Cathy Paper and Matt Tell, who each have their own entrepreneurial interests, but have come together to collaborate on a podcast they produce called "The Allstar Networking Show", which they record from the Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis. Global Market features chefs and artisans from many different parts of the world. The variety of places to eat and shop makes it a must-see destination. Matt's work is involved in expanding the reach of the Market by producing the podcast, growing memberships and a connection point for the entrepreneurs who've established businesses there. Cathy's work at Rock Paper Star has revolved around executive coaching, speaking, book marketing and teaching young professionals how to network. The latter is work that has really expanded the past few years, due to people needing to learn how to maximize their time when we we're all working virtually. "There's so much more to networking than just handing out business cards," Cathy says. "What if you need a connection to a good attorney, babysitter, or movie recommendation?" she said. All of those would come from your network. For more on this episode and for Matt and Cathy's top tips, listen to the show hereFind Cathy Paper here and Julie hereThank you to this month's sponsor!  Sunbelt Business Advisors and John A Knutson & Co, PLLP, JAK + CoIt's never too early to start planning.Check out the Business Readiness Transition online course offered by Julie #Keyestrategies

In this episode, we're joined with Mandu from NATIFS, North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems, to discuss food sovereignty and the future of indigenous foodways and the concept of culture and food as dynamic and evolving. North American Traditional Indigenous Food Systems (NāTIFS), founded by James Beard award winners The Sioux Chef, is dedicated to addressing the economic and health crises affecting Native communities by re-establishing Native foodways. We imagine a new North American food system that generates wealth and improves health in Native communities through food-related enterprises. NāTIFS has opened the Indigenous Food Lab in the Midtown Global Market on historic Lake Street in Minneapolis. The Indigenous Food Lab is a professional Indigenous kitchen and training center covering all aspects of food service; research and development; Indigenous food identification, gathering, cultivation, and preparation; and all components of starting and running a successful culinary business based around Native traditions and Indigenous foods. Reclamation of ancestral education is a critical part of reversing the damage of colonialism and forced assimilation, and food is at the heart of this reclamation. NāTIFS will drive sustainable economic empowerment and prosperity into tribal areas through a reimagined North American food system that also addresses the health impacts of injustice.   Check out NATIFS at NATIFS.org or @Natives_org on Instagram

The Black Entrepreneur State Fair is designed to support Black businesses. This year's opening drew over 2000 attendees with bouncy houses, 70 vendors, and live entertainment outside Midtown Global Market in Minneapolis. Feven Gerezgiher reports--Feven Gerezgiher reports:While many celebrate the opening of the Minnesota State Fair this week, people like Isaac Kamsin are sticking to the all black atmosphere across the river at the Black Entrepreneur State Fair. “I like the idea that this is black-owned,” said Kamsin. “I like to see the diversity of businesses here. You have food, you have apparel… And also just seeing the state coming out here, supporting it with some housing stuff. I think that's really cool. Good concentration of talent and businesses.”Co-organizer Keandrea Shelby said the fair started last year as a way to support Black businesses at a time when everything was closed. This year, she said the fair drew over 2000 attendees to its opening, with bouncy houses, 70 vendors, and live entertainment outside Midtown Global Market. Racial justice advocates have criticized the Minnesota State Fair in recent years for having a disproportionate number of white vendors relative to the state's population. General Manager Jerry Hammer said the Minnesota State Fair is working to streamline the vendor selection process. The Fair is also gathering data to create a baseline for future diversity work.At the Black Entrepreneur State Fair, vendors like horticulturalists Shontay Evans appreciate that Black dollars are circulating within the community.“I've been doing my business for two years and this is one of the biggest events I've ever done. I'm really happy to be a part of it because seeing all these Black people out here doing our thing is really happy and humbling,” she said. The Black Entrepreneur State Fair is also launching a girls mentorship program and a back-to-school drive. Visitors can donate new backpacks for entry through the end of the fair this Saturday.
