Here's a member of Congress with too much time on his hands… and way too little of anything on his mind.Greg Steube of Florida, is a run-of-the-mill, extremist Republican specializing in such partisan slapstick as trying to nullify Joe Biden's election and install GOP loser, Donald Trump, as president.But Steube went full-tilt ridiculous when he excitedly announced that, “Tomorrow I will introduce legislation to rename our coastal waters after… Donald Trump!” This would brand all the seas round America's entire coastline with “TRUMP” logos – like trapping all of America in a big fat Trump bear hug.But – isn't it rather blah to “honor” an ex-president with obscure boundary waters? It's like a town council voting to put the ex-mayor's name on a drainage ditch. Still, Stuebe hoped that this would charm the MAGA demi-god, prompting him to smile on Greg's future election ambitions. Believe it or not, this is what is considered serious congressional business by the GOP!Republican congress critters are in a frenzy to kiss up to their convict-in-chief, proposing multiple government gifts for him. Arizona's Paul Gosar, for example, is demanding that the US treasury print $500 bills bearing a portrait of the Donald. And Florida's Anna Paulina Luna proposes to tarnish the Congressional Gold Medal by bestowing it on the political mad dog who launched the January 6 mob attack on – yes, Congress! But the REAL lead story did not happen in Washington yesterday. WHICH idiot Republican becomes the NEW Future Former Speaker of the House doesn't much matter. Because the real lead story is summarized by the phrase AND NOW WE WAIT. Turns out that not only did Judge Arthur Engoron issue a gag order against Trump hours after Trump attacked the clerk of Engoron's court room yesterday, but he issued a gag order against Trump less than a day after he WARNED Trump's lawyers informally that their client needed to shut the eff up. Engoron – of whom they should be installing a statue outside his courtroom – provided a template for Judge Tonya Chutkan for a week from next Monday. Judge Engoron not only gagged Trump but HOW he gagged him ALSO gags Junior Trump and Eric Trump: “Personal attacks on members of my court staff are unacceptable, inappropriate, and I won't tolerate it. Consider this statement a gag order forbidding all parties from posting, emailing or speaking publicly about any of my staff.” But this trial is ultimately MOST valuable because what we just saw was the if-then scenario play out. Engoron didn't just issue a gag order because Trump attacked the clerk. He had WARNED HIM, via his lawyers, informally but clearly. And twelve hours later Trump did it anyway. Memo to Judge Chutkan: Get ready to issue a gag order, on penalty of revoking his bail, after that hearing October 16. And get ready to have to enforce it. It's Casual Friday! Sam and Emma host Jamelle Bouie, opinion columnist at the New York Times and co-host of the Unclear and Present Danger podcast, to round up the week in news. Bouie walks through the work of Joe Soss and Vesla Weaver that paints police as the most direct relationship that marginalized communities have with the state, understanding that their treatment at the hands of police creates a pessimistic view of the state and encourages a removal from the political system entirely. Capping off that conversation, Jamelle, Emma, and Sam walk through marginalized communities' relationship to crime, understanding their fellow citizens as overpoliced in daily life while under-policed in terms of the actual risks to the community via violent crime, all serving to paint their social role, as understood by the state, as one of developing criminality rather than active citizenship. Next, Jamelle Bouie parses through the nascent stages of the GOP presidential race, why DeSantis and much of the rest of the Right relies on culture war discourse over policy, why the media struggles to handle GOP lies after decades of embracing them, Donald Trump's role as an outside candidate even in 2024, and the constitutional nature of debt ceiling debates. They also talk with Hamza Syed about his work uncovering the Islamophobic response of the UK Government to obviously false papers covering an Islamic coup of Birmingham's education system, and the UK Policy Exchange's and much of the media's attempt to paint his journalism as an extension of this Islamist project of extremism. The Biden administration and House Republicans are already in a potentially months-long standoff over raising the national debt ceiling.  The Treasury Department started to enact “extraordinary measures” this week in order to keep paying the federal government's bills after hitting the debt ceiling, or the borrowing cap set by law, at $31.4 trillion. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen must now suspend some investments and exchange other types of debt to keep the cash flowing, but she predicts that can only last until June.  Congress must now raise or suspend the debt ceiling so the government can keep the cash flowing. Failing to act could push the country into default could destabilize financial markets and push the world into economic chaos.  Historically, raising the debt ceiling has been an easy vote for legislators. But it's become a political game of chicken in recent years. Republicans want to slash spending for entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, but the Biden administration has made clear it wants the limit to be raised without conditions.  What's really behind the hard stances from both parties? And given the clear divisions in the Republican party, are negotiations a good strategy? Host David Greene discusses with Mo Elleithee, executive director of Georgetown University's Institute of Politics and Public Service, and Sarah Isgur, senior editor at The Dispatch.  Plus, Representatives Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar were once again granted seats on House committees after being kicked off in 2021 by a Democratic-led Congress. They will both join the House Oversight and Accountability Committee and have already announced their intention to investigate President Biden over a number of issues.  What does this tell us about how the GOP plans to use its slim House majority?
