POPULARITY
We're diving deep into the disturbing, abusive world of Gypsy Rose Blanchard as we unravel the fascinating layers of her life. From her distinctive, childlike voice that her mother, Deedee Blancharde (allegedly) forced Gypsy to use, and her tumultuous relationship with Nicholas Godejohn, this episode will have you stunned throughout. From Claudine Blanchard forcing her daughter Gypsy to have her teeth removed and a feeding tube painfully installed, to the beatings that Gypsy had to endure for anything that Deedee deemed to be “out of line”, this is a hard case to swallow. With documentaries like Mommy Dead and Dearest on HBO Max, to the Hulu phenomenon, “The Act” with Joey King and Patricia Arquette, this case has a near endless supply of information, but that's not going to stop me from throwing my two cents into the ring. This case seemed to be pretty open and shut, Gypsy and Nick Godejohn stabbed Deedee, they were responsible for the death of Gypsy's mother, so they should be in prison for life… right? Wrong. Gypsy Rose Blanchard has officially ben released from prison as of December 28, 2023 into the loving arms of her husband, Ryan Scott Anderson. Now, as Ryan and Gypsy are on a media spree, including podcast appearances on *The Viall Files: Going Deeper Edition!* to clear the air, it seems to me that the story of Gypsy Rose and Deedee Blanchard is *far* from over. **Comment “Gypsy is free” if you have made it this far.** . In the ever-evolving narrative of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, the lines between victim and perpetrator blur, raising profound questions about justice, redemption, and human relationships. The "Hidden Killers" podcast, hosted by Tony Brueski with guest former Felony Prosecutor Eric Faddis, recently delved into this complex story, exploring the fate of Gypsy Rose and her former boyfriend, Nicholas Godejohn. Gypsy Rose, a victim of severe abuse at the hands of her mother, Dee Dee Blanchard, found a controversial path to freedom through the murder of her mother, facilitated by Godejohn. While Gypsy is now a free woman, Godejohn remains incarcerated for life. Faddis remarked on the disparity, "Usually when there is a hit put out... both of those individuals are held responsible." This case, however, presents a stark contrast in outcomes. The podcast also touched on the potential for Godejohn's legal team to have sought a plea deal, considering the evidence stacked against him. Faddis noted the influence of true crime documentaries and podcasts in shaping public perception and possibly affecting legal outcomes, suggesting that such media could play a role in Godejohn's future. Another intriguing aspect of Gypsy Rose's story is her new relationship, formed while she was incarcerated. Faddis described the commonality of such relationships, especially in high-profile cases, but questioned their healthiness. "It's shockingly common," he said, noting the mystique surrounding individuals like Gypsy Rose. The relationship dynamics are particularly noteworthy given the power differential that exists when one partner is incarcerated. Faddis expressed concern about how this dynamic might evolve now that Gypsy Rose is free. "Does that power differential shift, or is he sort of still going to be lording things over her?" he pondered. Brueski highlighted the peculiar nature of Gypsy Rose's new relationship, especially considering her husband's previous occupation as a teacher for disabled children and his fascination with the "Mommy Dead and Dearest" documentary. This raises questions about his motives and the health of their relationship. As Gypsy Rose navigates her newfound freedom, the world watches with bated breath. Her story, a blend of tragedy and hope, continues to captivate and confound. Will Gypsy Rose find true redemption and a healthy relationship in her new life, or will the shadows of her past and the complexities of her current relationship dictate her future? Only time will tell in this ongoing saga of love, crime, and the quest for justice. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE? Unraveling the Complex Web of Gypsy Rose Blanchard's Case: A Disturbing Tale of Manipulation and Misrepresentation In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," host Tony Brueski and guest Bob Motta, a defense attorney and host of the podcast "Defense Diaries," delved into the complex and disturbing case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard. The discussion centered around the Lifetime documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest," which has sparked widespread conversation and controversy. The conversation took a critical turn when discussing the husband of Gypsy Rose, a former special education teacher. Brueski found it disturbing that someone who worked with disabled children would be attracted to Gypsy Rose, who was portrayed in the documentary as a special needs child. "That's a huge red flag," Brueski stated, emphasizing the inappropriateness and potential dangers of such an attraction. Motta echoed these concerns, questioning the husband's motives and suggesting a possible financial incentive behind his actions. "He realizes that she's going to become famous from this and there's a money motivation there," Motta speculated, highlighting the ethical and moral complexities of the situation. The discussion also touched on the abusive lifestyle Gypsy Rose endured at the hands of her mother, DeeDee Blanchard. Motta pondered whether Gypsy Rose's compliance was a result of manipulation or a survival strategy. "Was that by her own will, or was it her will was overborne by her mother?" Motta asked, suggesting that Gypsy Rose's actions might have been influenced by her mother's control. Brueski and Motta also discussed the possibility of DeeDee obtaining legal guardianship over Gypsy Rose, which would have significantly impacted her ability to seek help or escape her situation. "That would have been a situation where I would have been like, that's almost justifiable homicide because that is like, she is now trapped her potentially for the rest of her life," Motta reflected, considering the legal and ethical implications of such a guardianship. The episode concluded with Brueski expressing relief that the school had fired Gypsy Rose's husband from his teaching position. "If I was a parent of a special needs child and I found out that's the teacher, I would be livid," Brueski stated, underscoring the gravity of the situation. As the case of Gypsy Rose Blanchard continues to evoke strong reactions and debate, one question remains: How can society better protect vulnerable individuals from manipulation and exploitation, especially in cases as complex and heartbreaking as this? In a surprising turn of events, Gypsy Rose Blanchard, whose life story gained notoriety through the documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest," has found love and tied the knot with pen pal Ryan Anderson. The couple's unique love story has captured the attention of many, shedding light on their journey from correspondence to marriage. Ryan Anderson, a 37-year-old special education teacher from Louisiana, first connected with Gypsy while she was serving time in prison for conspiring to murder her abusive mother, Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard. Anderson revealed during an exclusive interview with PEOPLE that their initial contact was part of a conversation with a hospital co-worker who had taken an interest in writing to Joseph Allen Maldonado, famously known as "Joe Exotic" from the Netflix hit show "Tiger King." Reflecting on that time, Anderson said, "Tiger King was really popular at the time. I said, 'I'll tell you what, if you write him, I'll write Gypsy Rose Blanchard. I never thought she'd be my wife." While Anderson had watched "Mommy Dead and Dearest," a documentary about Gypsy's ordeal, he made sure to also watch "The Act," a Hulu series from 2019 based on Gypsy's life, referencing its ending in his letter to her. Anderson poured his heart out in the letter, sharing personal details about himself. "I remember telling her what her story meant to me, and on the second page, I just let her have it," Anderson stated. Gypsy later explained that one reason she chose to respond was because Anderson hailed from Louisiana, her original home state, adding a touch of familiarity. Their correspondence began in May 2020 through exchanged emails, eventually leading to their first meeting in June 2021. Just over a year later, on July 21, 2022, the couple exchanged vows in a small prison ceremony at the Chillicothe Correctional Center in Missouri, where Gypsy had spent more than eight years. Gypsy Rose Blanchard had previously pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in 2016 for her involvement in the conspiracy to kill her mother, while her then-boyfriend, Nicholas "Nick" Godejohn, carried out the killing. Godejohn was found guilty of first-degree murder and armed criminal action, receiving a life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole, along with an additional 25 years. Now, as they navigate married life after Gypsy's release from prison on December 28, 2023, the couple is adjusting to newfound public attention. Anderson shared their approach, saying, "Now it's kind of like, ‘Oh, you're in the public eye now — go out there and experience it.'" Despite the challenges of the spotlight, their deep love for each other is evident. Gypsy expressed her feelings for Anderson, stating, "We're in love." The couple is looking forward to a second wedding ceremony where friends and family can attend, allowing them to celebrate their love surrounded by their loved ones. As the couple continues their journey together, their story serves as a reminder that love can be found in unexpected places, even amidst challenging circumstances and personal hardships. The subject of the documentary "Mommy Dead and Dearest", Gypsy Rose Blanchard has been released from prison for her role in the murder of Dee Dee Blanchard, her abusive mother.
What's up friends and welcome back to another episode of What Are We Doing? I'm your host Nick and today I want to talk about someone who has been dominating headlines lately - Gypsy Rose Blanchard. As many of you know, Gypsy just got released from prison after serving 8 years for her involvement in her mother Dee Dee's murder back in 2015. This case has fascinated people for years and generated lots of discussion about Munchausen syndrome by proxy, coercive control, and whether Gypsy was truly a victim or perpetrator in this situation. I distinctly remember binge watching the HBO documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest when it came out in 2017 and being completely engrossed by this bizarre and tragic story. Of course, the media spotlight on Gypsy ramped up again recently as her release date approached. I'll admit I had mixed feelings when I saw on Instagram that Gypsy was celebrating her freedom with a smiling selfie in her hotel room. On one hand, I'm happy she gets a second chance at life after enduring her mother's medical abuse for so many years. But on the other hand, it's hard to forget that she did scheme to kill Dee Dee in cold blood. Her mother might have been a toxic presence, but did she really deserve to die? Seeing supportive comments from high-profile figures like Jennifer Turpin, one of the siblings rescued from the notorious Turpin family abuse case, shows that many see Gypsy as a fellow survivor rather than a criminal mastermind. And Gypsy herself has expressed regret, saying in a recent interview that she thinks about her mother's murder every day and wishes she could go back in time and handle the situation differently. Of course, the big question is - what's next for Gypsy Rose Blanchard? How does someone who was isolated and infantilized for over 20 years adapt to normal adulthood and freedom? I really hope she takes time to focus on her mental health and adjustment, rather than jumping into new relationships or media deals. Building a healthy, stable life should be her number one priority. No doubt we'll be seeing a lot more of Gypsy in the coming months, especially with her new Lifetime docuseries premiering soon. I have to admit I'm curious to hear the story in her own words rather than filtered through documentarians and Hollywood. But I also worry about her being exploited or sensationalized by the entertainment industry. This is someone's real life tragedy, not just a juicy plotline. As much as the story pulls you in, I think we have to remember there are real people at the heart of it who are still trying to heal and move forward. I hope Gypsy finds peace and purpose in this new chapter of her life. She's endured so much manipulation and trauma already at a young age. Now having agency over her own life narrative and direction is a powerful opportunity, if she uses it wisely. I don't profess to know all the answers here. The whole saga brings up so many complex questions about culpability, motivation, and justice. What do you all think? Should we view Gypsy primarily as a victim or perpetrator in this case? Does she deserve a second chance at a normal life? Let me know your thoughts! I'm fascinated to hear different perspectives on this. ************************************************************* ✅GEL BLASTERS - 10% OFF YOUR ORDER https://wawdpod.com/blaster ************************************************************* ✅BLUECHEW - FIRST ORDER FREE Only $5 Shipping https://wawdpod.com/blue ************************************************************* ✅DUDEROBE - PROMO CODE: WAWD 20% OFF https://duderobe.com - promo code: WAWD ************************************************************* ✅THE PERFECT GIFT FOR ANY OCCASION!! Everyone knew the story of Gypsy's many illnesses, and many hearts were warmed by their loving mother - daughter relationship. Then, in June 2015, a frightening message was left on their shared Facebook page that led to the discovery of a horrific murder and blew open a world of secrets and lies.*Content Warning: Discussions of abuse*Mommy Dead and Dearest. This week we get into the new DC Flash. Aaron politely tells us what really gets his undies bunched and we talk about the 2017 crime documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest.
The Shrinks unpack this rare diagnosis, which is the diagnosis presented in the documentary Gypsy's Revenge on Investigation Discovery, The Act on Hulu and Mommy Dead and Dearest on HBO. We discuss possible causes and what to look for.
Movie and TV moms: the good, the bad, and the truly despicable. We grew up wishing that certain TV moms were our mom. We've watched movies wondering, “Oh, my lord, what is she doing?!” Today we're discussing moms of distinction in TV and film: those we love and those we love to hate. Our official homework this week is “Mommy Dead and Dearest” on HBO Max—the documentary about mom Dee Dee Blanchard and her daughter Gypsy Rose Blanchard. Dee Dee told Gypsy, her doctors, and the world that Gypsy had multiple serious illnesses, lied about her age, overmedicated her, and actually kept her ill since babyhood. Gypsy freed herself from her uber-toxic mom when she had her boyfriend brutally murder Dee Dee. The story was turned into a docudrama limited series in 2019 on Hulu called “The Act,” featuring Patricia Arquette, Chloe Sevigny, and Joey King. We also discuss some role-model film and TV moms. Some are probably yours, too, especially if you were watching TV in the 1980s! And one of our moms of distinction may surprise you! This episode was previously published on the Patreon on December 15, 2022. I'm rerunning this episode because I'm having technical issues this week. I'll be back next week with a fresh episode. content warning: murder, domestic abuse, medical abuse, financial abuse, self-harm, sexual assault, necrophilia, suicide A lot of us have weird moms. And then there's DeeDee Blanchard. This week, we're talking about Gypsy Rose Blanchard and the murder of her mother. I actually pre-recorded this a few weeks ago so i wouldn't have to work in December. Thus, I have no idea what I was saying in this episode. I'm pretty sure I mentioned those Party City wigs Gypsy was wearing but that's more a gut feeling than a memory. Anyway...enjoy! Buy merch here. Join the Patreon here. Email here. On June 14, 2015, sheriff's deputies in Greene County, Missouri, found the body of Clauddine "Dee Dee" Blanchard face down in the bedroom of her house just outside Springfield, lying on the bed in a pool of blood from stab wounds inflicted several days earlier. There was no sign of her daughter, Gypsy Rose, who, according to Blanchard, had chronic conditions including leukemia, asthma, and muscular dystrophy, and who had the "mental capacity of a 7-year-old due to brain damage" as the result of premature birth. After reading troubling Facebook posts earlier in the evening, concerned neighbors notified the police, reporting that Dee Dee might have fallen victim to foul play and that Gypsy Rose, whose wheelchair and medications were still in the house, might have been abducted. Rather than spending lots of time talking about the gruesome act itself - the murder of Claudine Blanchard - we focus more on the childhood and history of Gypsy Rose herself, and the historic child abuse that led her to such a dark place, desperate for freedom. Mommy Dead and Dearest is the 2017 documentary about the toxic dynamic between Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard that ended in murder. In this episode, hosts Brittany and Ronald discuss the provocative documentary that began with a murder and uncovered a lifetime of deception, mental illness, and child abuse. Brittany and Ronald interview director Erin Lee Carr about the making of the film and where Gypsy Rose is today. They also talk with medical child abuse expert Dr. Mary Sanders about the psychology behind Munchhausen by proxy syndrome, and how it affected the dynamic in the Blanchard home. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Today we are joined by hilarious fellow podcaster / comedian Jessica Coyle to discuss "Mommy Dead and Dearest", a true crime documentary about a psychopathic mom who convinces everyone that her daughter is disabled for nearly two decades. We also talk about our favourite comedians, the tenants of good improv, Jessica's impressive array of voices, the prevalence of helicopter wheelie parents, the persuasive power of performed disability, effective pickup lines for Tony, and Jamie's resentment of winter cardio. For our latest episode, Erin and Elizabeth talk to the two-time-Emmy-nominated film director Erin Lee Carr, whose work features several acclaimed true crime titles for HBO, including Mommy Dead & Dearest, At the Heart of Gold: Inside the USA Gymnastics Scandal, I Love You Now Die: The Commonwealth V. Michelle Carter, and Undercurrent: The Disappearance of Kim Wall. For Netflix, Carr directed Britney Vs. Spears, about Britney Spears' quest for freedom from her conservatorship controlled by her father. Erin Carr is the daughter of the esteemed New York Times media columnist David Carr, who died suddenly in 2015 at the age of 58 when Erin was just 26. David Carr had experienced what his daughter describes in our interview as “the rise and the fall and the rise,” grappling in his twenties with a crack cocaine addiction amidst the beginnings of what would become a meteoric journalism career. The premature births of Erin and her twin sister helped him get and stay sober, all of which is chronicled in his bestselling 2008 memoir The Night of the Gun. In Erin's own memoir about her father, 2019's All That You Leave Behind, she writes about the special bond she had with him over their shared career ambitions. And, as Erin would realize in her later twenties, their shared addiction to substances. Six years sober and engaged to a Washington Post media columnist (a similarity she thinks her father would have a field day with), Erin talks about the constant encouragement her dad bestowed on her—his toughness and tenderness—and shares the email he sent her after she was once fired that should probably be anthologized in parenting manuals. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tell-me-about-your-father/support

This episode is a little heavy on the existential dread this week. It was a tough week as the Girls get serious about the recent mass shooting in their community of Odessa, TX. Then, they delve into the dark world of Munchausen by proxy as they discuss the book Sickened by Julie Gregory and the documentary Mommy Dead and Dearest. The listeners receive a good talking to about following directions when the winners of "That Terrible Woman Book" contest are announced. The girls give their position on their fight or flight response. Julie and Melissa also work out the details of their future band, Battleax Pandemonium of Grandma Madge. Find out why social media almost caused Melissa to picket at her favorite retailer. Finally, Julie recounts her debut in the world of competitive eating. Through heartbreak and outrage, the Girls still manage a few laughs.
The guys pay tribute to all the troops, discuss Memorial Day and talk shark and cougar attacks, fake Yeezy's, the new Aladdin, Mommy Dead and Dearest, best rib joints, Pappy Van Winkle and pricey Whiskeys, traffic jam at Mount Everest, Adam Levine exiting The Voice, Quentin Tarantino and Margot Robbie at Cannes, guy who shot his nuts off and much more!See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

My esteemed colleague Stephanie Green is back for Erin Lee Carr's Mommy Dead And Dearest, which investigates Gypsy Lee Blanchard's murder of her con-artist mother, Dee Dee, and whether it was justified. Should Gypsy's father have done more? Is Gypsy's cousin the real star of the doc? And what's going to become of Gypsy when she's paroled? Our Cold Case is an Australian crime show's look at John Bunting (no relation), his horrible crimes, and the perils of casting a guy who looks like Jack Black in your re-enactments.
