Adapted from Melissa Moore's true-crime podcast and her memoir Shattered Silence, Happy Face explores the story of a serial killer's daughter grappling with her father's crimes. While the original podcast delivered firsthand accounts, this dramatized series takes liberties, introducing new storylines and plot twists not present in Moore's real experience. Tune in as we discuss whether these elements serve the narrative or undercut the authenticity that made Moore's podcast and book so compelling. Welcome to Today's Episode!

While Jami takes time off from recording MURDERISH during the Holidays, we're releasing an episode of her other podcast, Lipstick & Lies. In this episode of Lipstick & Lies, Jami walks co-host Melissa Moore through the case of Texas stage mom, Wanda Holloway. In 1989, Wanda went to great lengths to secure her daughter's spot on the coveted junior high cheerleading team. When her daughter, Shanna Harper, DIDN'T make the cheer squad, Wanda was seething with anger. So many amazing Canna-people, so little time. CannMed 24 was sublime! Here are the another batch of clips we got!Ben Cameransi – Mingowood Pharmacal, LLC - Dr. Benjamin Cameransi, MD, DABA is a Board-Certified Anesthesiologist, with a extensive background in pain management. He has started four Biotech Companies. He was involved in the development of Ryanodex™, a treatment for Malignant Hyperthermia. But wait, there's more… Acidic cannabinoids aren't very stable when they are extracted and purified. Dr. Camersani's team at Mingowood Pharmacal has a way to fix that.Taz Turner -CordovaCann Corp - Taz has the top three attributes we look for in a guest. He knows where Manitoba is located. He's a finance guy who spoke intelligently during his Capital Markets Panel. He is fun to chat to at a breakfast information session. Taz tells us how it is surprisingly difficult to get investment into the cannabis space in 2024. But, numbers and valuation guys like him (who also speak cannabis) are slowly convincing others that opportunities abound.Melissa Moore - Professor, Cannabis Horticulture & Biology, SUNY Niagara Community College. Melissa Moore developed some of her horticultural chops in Northern California, but now passes on her knowledge in Buffalo, NY. She was very helpful getting pics of Trevor during his Capital Markets Panel and then she sparked some intense Aspergillus discussions. Gypsy Rose Blanchard made headlines when she went to prison for her role in the 2015 murder of her mother, Clauddine "Didi" Blanchard. In what may be the most disturbing and twisted case of all time, it was revealed that Gypsy was being abused by Didi and suffering from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Didi had forced her to pretend for years that she was suffering from leukemia, muscular dystrophy (she was in a wheelchair) and other grave illnesses. In reality, Gypsy was perfectly healthy. On December 28th, 2024, Gypsy Rose was paroled after serving almost 8 years of her 10-year prison sentence, while her ex-boyfriend Nick Godejohn (who was responsible for stabbing Blanchard to death) serves life without parole. Her much-anticipated book, RELEASED: CONVERSATIONS ON THE EVE OF FREEDOM, with Michele Matrisciani and Melissa Moore, (journalist & daughter of the Happy Face Killer) was released today, January 9, 2024. It's both tragic and shocking. Gypsy gets very candid in the book and in her transcribed phone conversations with Moore from prison; deeper than any of the documentaries that are now streaming. Learn her true feelings about all of the attention she's receiving, and how Joey King and Hulu's THE ACT changed her life- but not for the better.Trigger Warning: content covered may be triggering for abuse survivorsEPISODE NOTES: NOONBREW 10% OFF:https://noonbrew.superfiliate.com/OUTLIER DISCOUNT LINK FOR NEXT EVO CBD (DISCOUNT POPS UP)https://nextevo.com/?irclickid=2V4RtwVyzxyPTTLSAyWvyTaMUkH1f6xf8Ro8Rc0&irgwc=1&utm_source=The%20Outlier%20Podcast&utm_medium=impact&utm_campaign=affiliate TAKE AN ONLINE CLASS TO LEARN OR SHARPEN ANY SKILL AND GET A FREE MONTH BY CLICKING THIS LINK AND SIGNING UP!https://skillshare.eqcm.net/c/2057049/1917540/4650Discussed in the episode:https://www.mylifetime.com/shows/the-prison-confessions-of-gypsy-rose-blanchardhttps://www.amazon.com/Released-Conversations-Freedom-Gypsy-Rose-Blanchard-ebook/dp/B0CQ1XFV32cover photo of Joey King: instagram/@joeykingcover photo: BenBella publishing, RELEASED Hosted on Acast. In a recent episode of "Hidden Killers," a debate rages over Asa Ellerup's potential Peacock Network payday, linked to her involvement in a documentary about her life as the wife of Rex Heuermann, the alleged Long Island serial killer. Host Tony Brueski, joined by former FBI Special Agent Jennifer Coffindaffer, delves into the ethical and legal implications of this controversial deal, raising questions about profiteering from crime-related stories. Asa Ellerup, entangled in her husband's notorious case, stands to earn a significant sum from a documentary produced by 50 Cent's G Unit Productions. This prospect has sparked outrage, particularly among the Long Island community and the victims' families. The documentary's approach, termed as a licensing agreement for Ellerup's image rights by Peacock, thinly veils what many perceive as a blatant attempt at monetizing tragedy. The outrage has led to proposed legislation in New York aiming to tighten the loopholes in the Son of Sam law. This law, originally designed to prevent criminals from profiting from their notoriety, may soon extend to include defendants' relatives. Attorney John Ray, advocating for the victims' families, strongly supports this amendment, citing the moral implications of allowing relatives like Ellerup to profit under such circumstances. Coffindaffer, weighing in on this development, expresses her reservations. While the law's intention might be sound, its broad application could inadvertently harm genuine victims connected to criminals. She draws parallels with Kerri Rawson, the daughter of the notorious BTK killer, who has become a vocal advocate for victims, using her traumatic experiences to help others. Rawson's case starkly contrasts with Ellerup's, whose actions have not demonstrated a similar commitment to advocacy or empathy. The discussion turns to the documentary's potential impact on the ongoing case. Coffindaffer speculates that the documentary could inadvertently lead to new evidence or leads against Rex Heuermann, given the close monitoring of Ellerup's activities and interactions. However, the ethical dilemma remains: should someone like Ellerup be allowed to profit from a situation that has caused immense pain to others? Brueski and Coffindaffer further explore the implications of such a law on individuals like Melissa Moore, daughter of the Happy Face Killer, who has also used her unfortunate family connection for advocacy. The conversation underscores the complex terrain of victim advocacy and the fine line between leveraging personal experiences for good and exploiting them for financial gain. As the debate intensifies, the question of Ellerup's true victimhood comes under scrutiny. Unlike Rawson and Moore, Ellerup's actions have been perceived as self-serving, further complicating public opinion about her role in this saga. The documentary deal, while legally permissible under current laws, raises profound moral questions about the commercialization of crime stories and the responsibilities of those involved. In conclusion, "Hidden Killers" sheds light on the challenging ethical landscape surrounding true crime storytelling. As the legal proceedings around the Son of Sam law expansion continue, the public is left to ponder the balance between storytelling, advocacy, and exploitation. The case of Asa Ellerup serves as a stark reminder of the complexities involved in narrating stories that emerge from the darkest chapters of human experience. In this episode of Lipstick & Lies, host Jami Rice walks co-host Melissa Moore through her own personal story about the time she met a wealthy heiress ..who turned out to be a prolific scam artist. It was 2018 when Jami shook hands with Mary Carole McDonnell, a Los Angeles based CEO and wealthy heiress who'd soon inherit multi-millions of dollars from her family's trust. Only, everything Mary Carole had told people about herself for decades was a lie. She wasn't a wealthy heiress ..even worse, she was a highly skilled con artist who'd scammed people and banking institutions out of over $50 million dollars. This wild story involves a phony heiress, a kidnapping for ransom lie, a controversial Beverly Hills entertainment lawyer, a shocking and mysterious death, and FBI investigation, and the Michael Jackson child abuse scandal. Though it seems like this story was ripped straight out of a movie, it's all true. In this episode of Lipstick & Lies, host Jami Rice walks co-host Melissa Moore through the case of Texas stage mom, Wanda Holloway, who went to great lengths to secure her daughter a spot on the coveted cheerleading team. When Wanda's daughter, Shanna Harper, didn't make the cheer squad at Alice Johnson Junior High in 1989, Wanda was seething with anger. The socialite stage mom then took steps to make certain that Shanna would be on the cheer team the following year. The steps she took, however, would turn many peoples' lives upside down. The subsequent trial outcome wasn't what anyone expected. This is the bizarre tale of an overzealous Texas socialite who'd carefully planned out her life and image, and nobody was going to get in the way of that …even if it meant murder. How did a bizarre confession derail the investigation into the first murder committed by Keith Hunter Jesperson, the notorious “Happy Face Killer,” and allow him to remain on the loose, killing at least seven more women? A new two-hour “20/20” reports on how after authorities discovered the body of Taunja Bennett in the Columbia Gorge in 1990, 57-year-old Laverne Pavlinac confessed to the police that she took part in the crime. She provided convincing evidence that implicated her and her boyfriend, 39-year-old John Sosnovske, in the murder, and they were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. In a shocking twist, Pavlinac's confession turned out to be false in an attempt to escape what she described as an abusive relationship with Sosnovske. With reporting by “Nightline” co-anchor Juju Chang, “20/20” dives into how Pavlinac was able to dupe police, featuring audio from the couple's confessions and police interviews, and from the hidden microphone installed in Pavlinac's apartment when she tried to convince Sosnovske that he was involved in the murder. The two-hour program features an exclusive interview with Melissa Gavin, a friend of Julie Winningham, the last person Jesperson killed before his arrest; and new interviews with John Ingram, lead detective who investigated Bennett's murder; Jim McIntyre, prosecutor for Pavlinac and Sosnovske's cases; Darlene Carpenter and Bonnie McAlpine, Pavlinac's daughters; Michelle White, Bennett's sister; Melissa Moore, Jesperson's daughter; and Alafair Burke, bestselling author and former prosecutor who based her first novel on the case. Melissa Moore, the daughter of convicted murderer Keith Jesperson, has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to support Asa Ellerup and her two adult children, who are the family of alleged Gilgo Beach Serial Killer Rex Heuermann. Heuermann was arrested last month and charged with the murder of three women in New York. Melissa's fundraising efforts have already raised over $23,000+ to help the family restart their lives. Suffolk Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison stated that Heuermann's arrest shocked his family, as they were unaware of the double life he was living. Heuermann faces charges of first-degree and second-degree murder concerning the deaths of three women, and he is considered the primary suspect in the murder of another victim. After a thorough 12-day search of their home by investigators, Ellerup's house was left in disarray. While empathizing with Asa's situation, Melissa aims to assist her and her family start anew. The funds raised will be delivered to Ellerup through her divorce law firm, as she filed for divorce from Heuermann last month. The money will be used for basic needs, restoring their home, covering divorce costs, and addressing other unmet needs. Melissa, who understands the trauma experienced by family members of serial killers, has previously spoken out about the shame they carry. She hopes to alleviate some of their burdens and remove any guilt associated with their connection to the perpetrator. Want to listen to ALL of our podcasts AD-FREE?
