In Factitious Disorder, the primary motivation is to acquire the identity of a patient, receiving attention and care in a medical setting.

Laura and Jim interview Andrea Dunlop host of "Nobody Should Believe Me" a podcast about Munchausen by Proxy (also now referred to as Factitious Disorder.) In the UK this is known as Fabricated or Induced illness (FII). Andrea is a member of the American Professional Society on the Abuse of Children's Munchausen by Proxy committee and the co-founder of Munchausen Support, a resource site for victims. Andrea has been outspoken in her criticism of Beate Kowalski, the mom at the heart of the documentary "Take Care of Maya" who fought so hard to find a treatment for her 9 year old daughter Maya's rare condition of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome. Laura and Jim discuss the evidence Andrea claims to support her position that Beate abused Maya. Many experts in CRPS treated Maya and confirmed her diagnosis time and time again, as did her own pediatrician Dr. John Wassenaar who submitted a detailed affidavit and who observed Maya before, during and after her release from Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. Despite this, Andrea still thinks Beate was most likely guilty of medical child abuse. What do you think? It was the fall of 2003 when Southern Illinois University student Sarah Delashmit told her suitemates that she had cancer. All of them were devastated and even shaved their heads in solidarity. The next year, Sarah told her roommate she had gotten into a horrific car accident, was in a wheelchair and would never walk again. By the time Sarah moved out of the dorm, the roommate and she were not on speaking terms, and the roommate saw Sarah in the cafeteria walking just fine.Sarah Delashmit suffered from Factitious Disorder, a rare psychological condition in which a patient intentionally falsifies medical or psychiatric symptoms in order to gain attention. But her lies did not stop with the wheelchair. Over the next decade, Sarah would claim to have Ebola, countless miscarriages, breast cancer, a deadly stalker and another rare disorder called Spinal Muscular Atrophy. Factitious disorder, more commonly known as Munchausen syndrome, is a mental health disorder in which people fake serious illness to gain sympathy, attention and support. A related disorder, Munchausen by proxy, or factitious disorder imposed on another, is a form of abuse in which caregivers make up or induce illness in their children. Psychiatrist Marc Feldman, MD, and psychologist Janet Cahill, PhD, discuss researchers' evolving understanding of these disorders, how common they are, the phenomenon of “Munchausen by internet” where people lie to strangers online, and whether there are any effective therapies for these disorders. Blanca Montano had a seven month old daughter, and a little boy who was reported to be "a little older," who both fell ill and were hospitalized in Tucson, Arizona in 2011. The little boy got better and was able to go home but when the seven month old began to make progress, she quickly got worse over night. Blanca's daughter suffered a number of infections (bacterial, fungal, blood infection, among others) that doctors had never seen one child have all at once. There are several disorders so branded with taboo, stigma, and legal consequences that they are almost never diagnosed and very little research has been done on them. These patients are literally seen by every specialty, often without knowing it, and without a good solution. 47 - Factitious disorder, better known as Munchausen’s syndrome, is when someone fakes being sick for no apparent reason aside from the benefit of assuming the sick role. Factitious disorder imposed on another, or Munchausen’s by proxy, is when a caregiver (usually a mother) claims their child is sick, in many cases causing the child to be sick through poisoning. We take a deep dive into the literature about these disorders, discussing the extreme lengths used to pretend they are sick, including lying about symptoms, falsifying medical tests and causing illnesses in themselves. Both disorders are fascinating, rare, and result in unneeded investigations and procedures (eg. surgery). The mortality rate is high ~10% and for those who survive often are disfigured. At about the 60 minute mark we have an extended Things We Came Across segment.
