The Federal Election is coming up on May 3rd and here at KCR we want you to be informed about the people you are voting for, their policies and what is likely to get done if they get elected. The Federal electorate of Gilmore stretches from Kiama in the north to Moruya in the south, taking in Nowra, Ulladulla, and many coastal and rural communities in between. Over 164,000 people call this diverse electorate home — including young families, retirees, First Nations communities, small business owners, students, and health professionals.  The Kiama LGA represents about 14% of the population of Gilmore and only 4% of the area. There are 8 candidates in total running for election.  Four of them have made their intentions clear for some months now and KCR has interviewed them already to try to get a sense of who they are as people, and you can hear podcasts of these interviews.   The other 4 candidates have entered the race too late to be included in this process.  In this series of podcast we are interviewing the four lead candidates in more detail about their policies:

Great to catch up with a highly qualified lady who couldn't imagine a life without horses. Despite holding a Bachelor Of Arts and a Degree in Accountancy, Natalie Jarvis opted for a career as a horse trainer. Natalie and husband Luke are currently running a successful training operation at the beautiful South Coast hamlet of Moruya. She talks about Thorotek Racing's headquarters. Natalie says she likes to keep all horses in an outside environment. She talks about the grass track facilities, beach and river swimming availability and the peaceful bushland riding trails. The trainer acknowledges husband Luke's role in the operation. She'll long remember the thrill of producing four winners on Moruya Cup day with 130 stable clients in attendance. Natalie takes us back to childhood days at Terrey Hills where she and sister Stephanie were riding horses from an early age. She talks of her parents who had little interest in horses as their daughters were growing up. Today they're keen followers of Natalie's horses. Natalie looks back on her two stints at Sydney's Macquarie University. She remembers her two years in the Racing NSW Finance Dept. Natalie recalls her visit to an open day at the Hawkesbury TAFE equine management school and the good advice she received. She was directed to Muskoka Farm at Gunderman  where her education with thoroughbreds began. She remembers a learning stint at the Hawkesbury Valley stables of trainer Warwick Hailes. Natalie fondly recalls the experience gained at the Ingham's Belmont Park spelling and pre-training farm at North Richmond. During this time she met her future husband. She looks back on the horses who got her training career under way. Natalie talks of her regular use of the Inglis Digital platform and the handy horses she's been able to source. The trainer explains that she and Luke are prepared to travel to distant meetings within a five hour time frame. Natalie acknowledges the jockeys with whom she's enjoyed successful associations. She's still riding the lion's share of trackwork herself. Had racing not gotten in the way, this lady would probably be running a busy accountancy firm by now. Like so many before her, Natalie Jarvis is totally “hooked” on racing.

Today, he definitely qualifies as an honorary Aussie thanks to his status as the youngest ever Mayor of Eurobodalla Shire on the south coast of New South Wales, a region which is home to visitor favourite Batemans Bay.Prior to his appointment at the end of 2021, Mat was well known in and around the area for being an active presence in community affairs and support, jointly receiving Eurobodalla's 2020 Local Hero Award for his bushfire recovery work.Since 2003 he has been involved in managing bars and restaurants in the UK, USA and down under, racking up travel to over 75 countries in the process.  One of these trips, to East Timor, fuelled the creation of Moruya-based boutique coffee brand Guerrilla Roasters in 2018, with business partner Lewis McKenzie.  A strong ethical focus and hunger to go against the flow has defined the operation to date.Remarkable TakeawaysWhy understanding local culture is vital to competitive advantage in experience-first businesses such as hospitality. How building your business around a passion-point sets up a story that customers and partners can really connect with. The power of creating ambassadors rather than consumers, and the communal outlook you need to unlock it.Remarkable Quotes“If you think about what your customer goes through from the moment they arrive to the moment they pull away. And you really try to tick all those boxes. In the end you no longer have customers, you have family and you have ambassadors.”“Some of our customers want to hear this amazing story about this amazing farm in Columbia. That we do so much with the family. Some people just want a bloody flat white.”“Australians overall don't like franchises in my opinion. Asha is a mum of 4 from Braidwood, NSW. Having grown up in Braidwood Asha had strong community connections and so in her first pregnancy when it came time to chose her care she followed the local birthing pattern through Queanbeyan hospital. Asha shares that, at the time, she didn't know there were other options. Asha went into labour on a ‘busy' day and so upon their arrival they were informed that the hospital was ‘full'. When Asha was told she would need to turn around, and drive another hour to Goulburn, she felt let down. Luckily someone noticed that she was “too far along” and so instead they accommodated her. However, being on the cusp of transfer to another facility did not make Asha feel the support she'd needed. So for her next births she looked elsewhere. At Moruya, Asha was made to feel like her care providers trusted her body and her instincts. She was even encouraged to leave hospital site, after check in, to walk by the water to allow herself space, to get out in the fresh air and inspire further contractions. Her needs were a priority and they worked with her. Asha's journey to birth was different each time. She's relocated (to be closer to Moruya hospital), driven down the Clyde mountain in labour and for her most recent birth she laboured through ambulance transfer. She describes how her most recent birth was a posterior delivery. She shares that this was the most challenging experience of her life. Asha is an artist and photographer and mother. Her life is surrounded by the joys, imaginings, energies and rhythms of her children. Together we spoke in her backyard, enjoying the sunshine, sounds of spring and playful antics of our two toddlers (who join in our chats). Before falling pregnant, I vividly remember seeing Asha around the community and I remember wondering how she so beautifully balanced her own endeavours with mum life. It's a pleasure to have now had the opportunity to listen to Asha share her birth stories. Her motherhood, partnership and children are the threads that she is weaving into her most beautiful and fulfilling life, of love and loving, each day as a family.

Leah Kershaw lives in the coastal town of Bodalla. She is a mum of four boys and has baby number 5 on the way. Leah has birthed in Moruya and Queanbeyan hospitals and for her final pregnancy she is planning a home birth, enlisting the services of a known midwife through The Nest of Moruya. She'd met her partner in Mount Isa, Queensland, but moved home in her first pregnancy to the south coast of NSW in order to be near her mum to birth. Her partner continued to work up north but travelled back down for the birth of their first son. Travel was a factor for Leah's first three births, but she wasn't the one travelling the 1000s of kms, instead this trek was her partners as he continued to work flyinflyout in rural Queensland. Women who also have flyinflyout partners will understand the significance of this in early motherhood and so after some discussion and family negotiation Leah and her family relocated. They moved before birth number four, to the Queanbeyan area, as her partner found a local job. Leah shares her previous positive birthing experiences. Every birth was different. She shares her experience using different birthing positions, of induction, preterm birth (membrane rupture) and water birth. Leah appreciates the care and facilities at both Queanbeyan and Moruya hospital, but also expresses an innate desire within herself to seek something different for her upcoming fifth birth. Thanks to Instagram, Leah has connected with doulas and embraced this birth as an opportunity to rebirth herself. She has worked directly, over zoom, with birth mentor and doula @ripsnorter to delve inside herself and discover her wants and needs for both her pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Leah shares how she didn't do this same work prior to her other births and that birth more so ‘happened' to her. She feels strongly about activating space for herself this time. She knows this commitment to self and deep inner work is honouring her rite of passage. She is both opening into, and planning to honour and close, this birthing stage of her life (through things like ‘closing the bones').

In Canberra students spoke to a massive crowd overflowing from every edge of Garema Place. The speeches were some of the best I have ever heard and now Earth Matters brings some of them to you as well as music and chants. Hear the mass phone call the strikers made to Scott Morrisons office.Later in the show we join Will Douglas, the Moruya teacher, who has been suspended from teaching  for supporting the school strike. Here is the link to the fundraiser to help him stay financially afloat until his work ban by the Departement of Education has been lifted following its enquiry into his conduct. Stream episodes on demand from www.bitesz.com (mobile friendly). Show notes podcast 15 – Refugee Week in South East NSW Welcome to About Regional – a new place for the stories of South East NSW. Refugee Week is being marked around the region, the theme is a clever play on words borrowed from our national anthem - “With courage let us all combine.” The aim of the week is to celebrate the contribution refugees make to Australian society and to ultimately build a better understanding between different communities and bring about successful integration. A range of cultural, social and advocacy events are planned across the Eurobodalla, Bega Valley and Snowy Monaro in the coming days. At Cooma on Thursday (June 22) there is a film screening, “Constance on the Edge” between 5:30 and 7:30 at the Cooma Multicultural Centre on Mittagang Rd. ‘Constance on the Edge’ follows charismatic Constance, a mother of six, as she confronts her painful past in war torn Sudan, and risks everything in Australia so her family can thrive. Filmed over 10 years in Wagga Wagga, the documentary is an unflinchingly honest portrayal of one refugee family’s resettlement story in regional Australia. The Bega Valley branch of Rural Australians for Refugees has a packed program of movie screenings, dinners and author talks and on Friday, June 23 at 10 am in Littleton Gardens Bega, a rally to raise awareness of Refugee Welcome Zones. And in the Eurobodalla, locals are invited to join in a celebration in Moruya on Saturday morning (June 24) as the Welcome Scroll visits on its national journey. The Welcome Scroll is 5 metres long, features hand turned red gum handles and the signatures of representatives from over 140 Refugee Welcome Zones around the country - including the signature of Eurobodalla Mayor Liz Innes. Head to Russ Martin Park between 10 and 12 this Saturday, they’ll be food and live music and you can check out the Moruya Markets at the same time. South East NSW busy as always! To this week’s podcast - William Maley is Professor of Diplomacy at the Australian National University, and Vice President of the Refugee Council of Australia, he has just been in the region as a guest of the Social Justice Advocates of the Sapphire Coast. Bill’s book “What is a Refugee?” is a guide to the complex issues that surface whenever refugees are discussed, while also telling the stories of families and individuals who have sought refuge. Bill came to Merimbula keen to motivate and inform advocacy around the issue, hoping for a more human approach to refugees from the Australian Government and sections of Australian society. He spoke for almost an hour, to about 200 people, I’ve boiled it down to about 17 minutes, I’ve cleaned the audio up as best I can, but there is a little bit of background noise, which I hope doesn’t get in your way. Thanks for tuning into About Regional, your feedback, story ideas and advertising enquiries are welcome, just flick me an email – hello@aboutregional.com.au Thanks to my partners in this week’s podcast - Light to Light Camps – pristine beaches, great food, hot showers and comfy beds. This is your chance to explore the Wilderness Coast in style. See you out and about in South East NSW.
