What if filmmakers took their cameras to space? Prepare for a world of zero-G cinematography! From weather-sealed cameras designed to handle unexpected astronaut vomit to the perpetual hum of life-support systems ruining your audio, documentary filmmaking in orbit presents unique challenges. Discover why the International Space Station's lighting is "just awful," how playing a guitar in microgravity sends you spinning in unexpected directions, and why the first task in every Mars simulation is fixing the eternally broken toilet. Explore how future space workers will need specialized trade skills—from plumbers to welders—as humanity expands beyond Earth. This thought-provoking "what if" scenario features insights from documentary filmmaker Sam Burbank and Explore Mars CEO Chris Carberry. —— Chris Carberry is the CEO and co-founder of Explore Mars, Inc. When the last full-time doctor left the small town of Carberry, Manitoba in 2023, the responsibility of providing healthcare was left on the shoulders of nurses. In our second show from Carberry, Dr. Brian Goldman learns from a retired nurse just how robust rural healthcare once was. And when Brian witnesses a health emergency first hand, he sees the toll a town without doctors is taking on one nurse practitioner.
Like many Canadian small towns, Carberry, MB had become a healthcare desert. In 2023, the small ER closed and the last doctor left. Carberry embarked on the fight of its life to get healthcare back. And now, just days before the first of two new MDs starts work, Dr. Brian Goldman visits Carberry to learn about the Herculean efforts it takes for one town to reinstate healthcare, and make sure they don't lose it again.

The last 25 years have produced plenty of conflict and a seasoned community of journalists who have moved towards the sound of fighting. Sean Carberry documents the personal costs of those reporters, producers, photographers, and videographers who, in documenting the worst of humanity, have paid a price with their physical and emotional health. Carberry spent years as a journalist reporting from some of the world's most dangerous and mysterious locations, including Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, and Yemen. He then worked for the government producing oversight reports on military operations in the Middle East, Asia, and Africa. He aims to keep his work non-partisan and non-political as he breaks down complicated foreign policy challenges. He recently reported for National Public Radio where he served as correspondent in Kabul, Afghanistan and currently serves as managing editor at National Defense. Carberry is also the author of a powerful new memoir, “Passport Stamps, Searching the World for a War to Call Home.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
A horrific crash in Carberry, Manitoba last year left 17 people dead. They were seniors on their way to a casino. The driver of their bus entered an intersection and into the path of an oncoming semi. Today, police say… there will be no charges. And: The power plant in Churchill Falls, Labrador is empty for the first time in its 50-year history. Even essential staff have been evacuated ahead of an encroaching wildfire. While we may not think of it very often, music has a long history of influencing how we think about spaceflight. From the scores of early silent films to the modern classics we all know, like 2001: A Space Odyssey and the never-ending franchises of Star Trek and Star Wars, we often have a riff going through our minds when we see a space image—few can hear Strauss' Blue Danube without thinking of the space station in 2001, or see a tilted yellow title scroll without hearing that first orchestral crash of John Williams' immortal Star Wars score. In addition, he talked about his new book documenting and talking about the music and composers for space and scientific films. Our special guest Chris Carberry of EXPLORE MARS, author of the new book THE MUSIC OF SPACE joins us! We imagine a civilization on a distant, cloud-covered planet called Seattle Nine. Their only glimpse into the universe beyond comes from intercepting old Earth movies and TV shows, which they believe to be real documentaries about space. As they piece together the evolution of space travel through the music in these films, a fascinating picture emerges. From the Wagnerian scores of early sci-fi to the brassy themes of Star Wars, they conclude that each alien species has its own musical soundtrack, that space itself changes sound over time, and that music may even be the key to communicating with extraterrestrial life. Join us on a humorous journey into the music of space exploration, as seen through the eyes of our fictional cosmic neighbors. In this episode, Neil Carberry, Chief Executive of the Recruitment and Employment Confederation, discusses the current state of the labour market and the challenges employers face in 2024. He emphasises the importance of effective internal communication in recruitment and retention, highlighting the need for human skills in the hiring process. Neil also discusses the impact of remote work and the importance of fair processes and negotiations in organisations. He emphasises the role of internal communicators in facilitating dialogue, establishing justice, and building a sense of belonging within the workforce. Overall, Neil emphasises the critical role of internal communication in navigating the complexities of the labour market and driving organisational success. An assumable mortgage is when a home buyer takes over the seller's existing mortgage. When assuming a mortgage, the same terms and conditions from the seller's mortgage are transferred to the buyer. A mortgage loan assumption means the buyer does not have to apply for their own mortgage. Instead, they “assume” the original mortgage's interest rate, repayment period, and remaining balance. An assumable loan has pros and cons for buyers and sellers. Therefore, knowing how assumable mortgages work can help you decide on the best type of home loan for your circumstances.
