Content creators are only becoming increasingly influential, and are able to access young audiences – an audience which public media traditionally finds very difficult to reach. So is there an opportunity for public media to work with content creators in mutually beneficial exchanges? In this episode, we look at two programmes being run by broadcasters where they are collaborating with content creators: the ABC and the BBC. And we look from both sides – the side of the public broadcaster, and the side of the content creator, to understand the benefits that such programmes could provide. We also speak to UNESCO about how they've been surveying content creators to find out their competencies. And with such programmes already underway, we discuss with one academic why public media needs to be particularly cautious about collaborating with news influencers. For this episode we were joined by Dagye, the founder of luxury fashion brands A Day Without Angst (ADWOA) and Jeanius Bar Atelier. I have followed Dagye's journey in fashion for nearly 10 years now, so to finally be able to sit down with him was an honour and a full circle moment. I first came across Dagye through seeing his bespoke denim pieces on my favourite artists Young Thug and Future in the mid-2010's. I remember the feeling of shock when discovering that the designer of these jeans was a German-born Ghanaian guy from Milton Keynes who hadn't studied fashion. How did he beat the odds to end up in these spaces and be dressing some of the biggest artists on the planet!?! Since then Dagye has gone on to raise the bar and defy expectation year on year. His high fashion brand ADWOA has garnered attention and affinity from key people within culture and his other brand Jeanius Bar Atelier is slowly becoming the front runner in luxury streetwear! How has Dagye achieved all of this at such a young age? What does it take to build two thriving businesses simultaneously? Who has Dagye had to become to reach this point and how? This last question became the most pertinent theme of our conversation. Dagye eloquently broke down the experiences he's gone through in life, the fashion industry and ultimately the actions he had to take to grow as a result of these. This made for an incredible conversation that I believe any budding fashion professional needs to hear. This game isn't easy and to reach the pinnacle takes a lot of sacrifice, Dagye's story epitomises this. Alongside this, Dagye shared his thoughts on the streetwear scene, the importance of personal branding, sustainability, what makes designers great and much, much more! Since recording Dagye has continued to thrive! Jeanius just dropped their Cream Ottoman collection and the whole thing is fire! From the creative to the fits, Dagye doesn't miss! Julian Addo is the Founder and CEO of Adwoa Beauty, an award-winning textured hair-care brand.Originally from Monrovia, Liberia, Julian and her family relocated to New York in 1982. She began her career as a stylist during her teenage years, working hard to support her family and make ends meet. Eventually, she became a successful salon owner but made the unexpected decision to venture into the banking industry, leaving her salon behind. In 2012, Julian launched her own beauty blog, Bella Kinks, as a passion project. While maintaining her full-time corporate job, she built relationships within the beauty industry and established partnerships with key companies. However, it was when Julian faced a layoff from her banking career that she saw an opportunity for change. Inspired by disruptive direct-to-consumer companies like Glossier and Warby Parker, Julian noticed a significant lack of innovation in the natural and textured hair sector. Never in a million years did Julian think she'd start her own brand but after many rejections on the idea, she felt strongly to get the concept out there. In 2017, her natural hair care line Adwoa Beauty was born. In our interview with Julian, she reveals how she reignited her passion for beauty after years in the corporate world, sharing the step-by-step process of launching her brand without outside funding and the realities of starting a business from her living room. Julian how she acquired her first customers, built brand awareness, and secured a game-changing partnership with Sephora. We also talk about her fundraising experience, what she learned about raising money, her plans for the next phase in her business, and so much more.In this episode, we'll talk to Julia about:* Tracing the roots of Julian's self-belief and her advice to others for pursuing their dreams. [03:01]* Julian talks about her family's arrival in New York, and her reflections on this period. [08:22]* The first job that Julian had at a salon and the lessons she learned at a young age. [15:47]* Work in the corporate sector and some of the benefits of working in banking. [21:59]* How Julian pivoted back into the beauty industry and focused on the natural hair space. [27:27]* Julian's natural curiosity and tendency to always ask questions. [38:10]* The product development and testing processes for Adwoa Beauty. [45:53]* Launching and distributing Adwoa Beauty products early on. [49:50]* How Julian aligned and partnered with Sephora. [52:29]* Finding the right people to work with and the support that is accessible to new brands. [56:48]* The evolution of Julian's fundraising process. One thing we love with Demythifying, other than diving in deeper with Greek and Roman mythology and history, is building a community and learning about other cultures myths and histories along the way. When Charlotte saw online a creative couple were not only painting STUNNNING artworks based on African mythology, but also recording podcasts on the subjects, we knew we HAD to have a chat with them. Adwoa and Solomon from Adeche Atelier/Afro Mythos were a great interview and we hope this can kick off an interest in African myths. Kwasi Konadu's book Many Black Women of this Fortress: Graça, Mónica and Adwoa, Three Enslaved Women of Portugal's African Empire (Hurst, 2022) presents rare evidence about the lives of three African women in the sixteenth century--the very period from which we can trace the origins of global empires, slavery, capitalism, modern religious dogma and anti-Black violence. These features of today's world took shape as Portugal built a global empire on African gold and bodies. Forced labor was essential to the world economy of the Atlantic basin, and afflicted many African women and girls who were enslaved and manumitted, baptised and unconvinced. While some women liaised with European and mixed-race men along the West African coast, others, ordinary yet bold, pushed back against new forms of captivity, racial capitalism, religious orthodoxy and sexual violence, as if they were already self-governing. Many Black Women of this Fortress lays bare the insurgent ideas and actions of Graça, Mónica and Adwoa, charting how they advocated for themselves and exercised spiritual and female power. Theirs is a collective story, written from obscurity; from the forgotten and overlooked colonial records. By drawing attention to their lives, we dare to grasp the complexities of modernity's gestation. Learn more about your ad choices. For Julian Addo, founder and CEO of textured hair-care brand Adwoa Beauty, her business is deeply intertwined with her own life story. Addo was born in Monrovia, Liberia to a Ghanaian father and Liberian mother and moved to the U.S. in 1982. She worked in a beauty salon as a stylist and then as a salon owner. After a period in banking, while still doubling as a salon owner, Addo began to see how the DTC space was disrupting not only business models, but also branding itself. Inspired by the likes of Glossier and Warby Parker, Addo saw a stark lack of such branding innovation in the natural and textured hair sector. She said she woke up one day in March 2016 determined to develop Adwoa Beauty, which shares Addo's traditional Ghanian name meaning “female born on a Monday.” “I knew that I had to pull from my life and my experiences and my vision super heavily so that I could enjoy the brand, because it came from a passionate place,” Addo shared on this week's episode of the Glossy Beauty Podcast. Adwoa Beauty has been a Sephora-exclusive brand since Nov. 2019 and has 11 products. It plans to expand to an additional 158 doors in the first half of 2022, to a total of 448 U.S. Sephora doors. Adwoa Beauty is also in 48 Sephora Canada doors and will expand to all 98 locations. Approximately 65% of Adwoa Beauty sales are from Sephora, and Adwoa grew its Sephora sales 200% year-over-year between 2021 and 2020. “For me, it's about being smart on where we go and how we move. We want to grow but not grow too fast, because there are a lot of pain points that come with just spreading yourself too thin,” said Addo. “I never really saw Adwoa Beauty as a type of brand that was in 100,000 doors. I want this brand to provide its audience with an experience they hadn't had before.”
In this episode, I spoke to Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Alessia Cara. Discovered at the tender age of 18, she's grown up in the spotlight, and shared that journey with her fans through her music – often showing us a perspective far outside the confident, sexy pop-princess norm. Her unique voice and emotional vulnerability gives her lyrics a power; a sense of relatability for anyone who has ever felt alone or unloved or sad. What struck me about this conversation is her ability to be so completely open about her struggles with maintaining mental health. For many, those internal battles can be incredibly lonely, and Alessia, through her music and openness, is bravely creating space for them. She's refreshingly honest about her personal battles, and throughout this conversation I couldn't help but feel encouraged and uplifted by being able to share our common experiences. When you see Little Simz (or Simbi, as I call her) perform, she gives everything to the crowd. Off stage, she has this incredible composed energy. So, how does she find the balance? We talk about how to manage the energy you expel in your work and what to keep for yourself. In a recent interview Simbi said, “my career is very important to me but it's not my life, I'm doing things differently this time.” And I can hands down relate to that. As I'm sure a lot of you can. Turning up in life and setting boundaries is vital for our relationship with ourselves and with others. Born to tell stories, Little Simz has written another amazing album – Sometimes I Might Be Introvert – because of her ability to self-reflect and look at uncomfortable things. She talks about what inspires her work and the responsibility she feels as a young, Black British artist and woman. I loved having this conversation. Even though we were countries apart, it felt like we were sat chatting on the sofa together. Enjoy and as always, mad amounts of love. You can follow @littlesimz and you can follow us @gurlstalk.
