Feeling like an adaption of a comic book and being compared to Kill Bill, Gunpowder Milkshake is a big blast of neon infused action. Directed by Navot Papushado, Gunpowder Milkshake is the action thriller starring Karen Gillan as a young assassin. To protect an 8-year-old girl (Chloe Coleman), a dangerous assassin (Karen Gillan) reunites with her mother (Lena Headley) and her lethal associates (Carla Gugino, Michelle Yeoh, Angela Bassett) to take down a ruthless crime syndicate and its army of henchmen.
Spoilerpiece celebrates its 7th anniversary this week! After we all offer a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us over the years, Megan leads off with a review of M. Night Shyamalan's OLD (5:52), a horror movie about people aging rapidly, which is exactly what we expected in the worst way. Next, we talk about Navot Papushado's GUNPOWDER MILKSHAKE (17:44), a stylized Netflix action film with a stacked cast (Karen Gillan, Lena Headey, Carla Gugino, Angela Bassett, and Michelle Yeoh), that isn't used to its fullest. After that, we dig into SETTLERS (33:47), Wyatt Rockefeller's brutal sci-fi Western that we struggled through. We wrap up with FEAR STREET: Part Two - 1978 (44:04), the second film in Leigh Janiak's Netflix horror trilogy, which we were all excited to see (it doesn't disappoint). And in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we talk about Robert Luketic's 2001 rom-com LEGALLY BLONDE starring Reese Witherspoon! We have a blast talking about this movie, which recently marked its 20th anniversary.

Navot talks writing the explosive female-driven action-thriller starring Karen Gillan and Carla Gugino: "When you strip down this [assassin] genre… it's got this rich history of this hitman following this code and laws of the underworld… but, like in all of these movies, there's always someone innocent introduced into this equation that puts our hero into a dilemma: do I keep the code, or do I go with my heart?" Navot talks about his process with his writing partner Ehud Lavski and how a screenplay is never a fixed object. "A script is a living thing, and you have to be aware of it every step of the way… the worst thing you can do is be fixated on something, and I have to compliment my writing partner [Ehud Lavski], who is always on his toes, always thinking, and once I have an idea, we just jump at it." Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. Back in 2010, a little known foreign film appeared entitled in its native language Kalevet brought some notoriety to the director/writer combo Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado. At first it was thought that maybe some of the interest was that it was the first "horror" film from Israel. But the film known as Rabies in English and released wide to the world in 2012 actually was a quirky and well made neo-grindhouse horror film that had a lot to say (see our own discussion on the film in episode 116 of Dark Discussions). In 2013, when their follow up Big Bad Wolves hit the festival circuits, director/screenwriter Quentin Tarantino stated he thought it was the best film of the year. Whether that's an overstatement, or whether it was the fact some say it was a homage to his own films, Big Bad Wolves most certainly is a dark and some ways comic thriller that immediately landed on everyone's radar. When a school teacher is suspected to be a serial murderer of children, a group of individuals including a police man as well as the father of a murder victim, decide to take justice in their own hands. The film seems to be both a standard thriller and even a disciple of the Tarantino films, yet in all honesty it has some interesting topics to say about people and policy that the creators of the film are not too shy to present. Dark Discussions discusses the film, some of the topics it brings up, as well as some quirky and less obvious things the movie has to say including mobile phone ring tones and little dog people. Get ready for a discussion that leaves co-host Eric a bit frazzled as controversy over substance makes him flabbergasted. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. The Israeli writer/director team Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado are making waves on the festival circuits right now with their new film Big Bad Wolves, a violent thriller, that Quentin Tarantino has said is one of the best films he's seen this year. However, in 2010, their film entitled Rabies (also known as Kalevet) surprised many folks internationally with its dark and yet odd wit. Some called it a slasher film, others called it a film of suspicion, fear, and obsession, while others called it maybe even a serial killer film. Yet one term that seems to keep popping up is a throwback to pulp and grindhouse cinema. When a brother and sister leave home for questionable reasons, a serial killer captures the girl while out in a fox nature preserve. Suddenly chain events happen that draw in a college co-ed tennis team, the park ranger and both his dog and girlfriend, and a pair of police officers who come to investigate when the dispatcher receives a call from one of the tennis players. The film, Rabies, released in the United States in 2012, was named as one of co-host Mike's best horror films of last year. With its extreme violence, fascinating directing, and dark yet witty screenplay, the film is a must see by both horror fans and grindhouse fans that like something different and original. Dark Discussions discusses the film and why you should check it out. As always we welcome your comments: darkdiscussions@aol.com (written email or attached mp3 files) WWW.DARKDISCUSSIONS.COM
