On this episode, we talk with Anna May about stream of consciousness writing, poetry, and getting into the right writing headspace. And of course we talk to her about her music, whichshe self-describes as “Tender immersive moodscapes” and doing yoga before everyperformance. Alternative tragic Americana, invocations for peace & judgment reshaping with bleeding heart stream of consciousness poems. Originally from Connecticut, before becoming a western transplant, Anna May is a singular artist whose songs bear a placelessness that lends to their timeless nature. Anna is a critically acclaimed songwriter & vocalist who strives to bring jazz elements into the format of folk. The deep exploration of heartbreak and trauma has been an ongoing quest throughout Anna's work. Her lyrics have been heavily textured by a lonesome whimsicality that finds itself most at home in the vastness of the American West. Anna's music honors the nomadic spirit with memory, meditation & fresh interpretations of folk music and jazz influence. She honors a hope to enhance connection, humility, healing, and joy among people in the process of parting with typical genre rules. As much as we admire an intricate arrangement and a progressive song structure, not every tune needs to tout itself as a pocket symphony. I mean, we’ve already got one “Bohemian Rhapsody”, right? So while house and hip-hop may spring to mind when thinking about repetition, there’s an intrinsic simplicity to other styles of songwriting […] The post Anna May: “The Show” appeared first on KUT & KUTX Studios -- Podcasts.

Front Row Classics welcomes author Katie Gee Salisbury this week. Katie has just penned a wonderful book on one of the 20th century's greatest pioneers of film, Anna May Wong. "Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong" is a page turning exploration of Wong's life set against the Jazz Age and early days of Hollywood. Salisbury shines a spotlight on Anna May's glamourous life along with her rebellious personal life & fight for less stereotypical roles. "Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong" is available from Dutton Publishing wherever books are sold. Katie Gee Salisbury is the author of Not Your China Doll, a new biography of Anna May Wong, the first Asian American movie star. Her work has appeared in the New York Times, Vanity Fair, The Ringer, the Asian American Writers' Workshop, and elsewhere. She was a finalist for the Jerome Hill Artist Fellowship in 2021 and gave the TED Talk “As American as Chop Suey.” She also writes the newsletter Half-Caste Woman. A fifth-generation Chinese American who hails from Southern California, she now lives in Brooklyn.

Born into the steam and starch of a Chinese laundry, Anna May Wong (19051961) emerged from turn-of-the-century Los Angeles to become Old Hollywoods most famous Chinese American actress, a screen siren who captivated global audiences and signed her publicity photoswith a touch of defianceOrientally yours. Now, more than a century after her birth, Yunte Huang narrates Wongs tragic life story, retracing her journey from Chinatown to silent-era Hollywood, and from Weimar Berlin to decadent, prewar Shanghai, and capturing American television in its infancy. As Huang shows, Wongs rendezvous with history features a remarkable parade of characters, including a smitten Walter Benjamin and (an equally smitten) Marlene Dietrich. Challenging the parodically racist perceptions of Wong as a Dragon Lady, Madame Butterfly, or China Doll, Huangs biography becomes a truly resonant work of history that reflects the raging anti-Chinese xenophobia, unabashed sexism, and ageism toward women that defined both Hollywood and America in Wongs all-too-brief fifty-six years on earth.

With the holiday approaching, the boys look back on celebrations and costumes from days gone by. Some were hits, some were misses, and others were near disasters. And speaking of poor decisions, the guys spend time discussing a variety of shaky endeavors, specifically: the upcoming Scott Pilgrim animated series, the remains of Fox's X-Men franchise, and the doomed Goldman Sachs-Apple credit card. Born in Los Angeles in 1905, Anna May's birth name was Wong Liu Tsong. She is considered the first Chinese American Hollywood movie star, as well as the first Chinese American actress to gain international recognition. (1)Anna May's career spanned 40 years in silent films, sound film, television, stage, and radio. (2) She appeared in more than 60 movies throughout her career. (3) She paved the road for Asian American actors, by fighting through institutional racism in Hollywood. One of the most devastating moments in her career was being denied the lead role of a Chinese farmer's wife in MGM's, “The Good Earth”, a 1937 film adaptation of Pearl Buck's novel. (4)The studio cast a White actress to play O-lan and offered Anna May the role of a villain, which she refused. (5) Major studios often resorted to Yellowface; the practice of casting white actors as Asians. Despite limited lead roles, stereotypical casting and vast pay inequities, Anna May Wong left a legacy for others; now, decades later, her work is being recognized and she is celebrated by having her image & name placed on an American quarter .SOURCES:https://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/oct-25-is-on-sale-date-for-anna-may-wong-quarter-dollar2)Jessica Kariisa, “She Fought Racism in Early Hollywood. Welcome to another 'beta' episode of a brand new show with May Lee, Kelly Hu and Tamlyn Tomita, or MKT!* On this episode, we unveil the official title of the show and why we chose it! We also catch up on our recent travels, which include a serious sailing adventure, a festival in Okinawa that only happens every 5 years and wine tasting in Paso Robles with the fur babies. We also try and unpack the results of the midterm elections. IMPORTANT NOTE: This episode was recorded just hours before the GOP clinched control of the House and a day before Speaker Nancy Pelosi stepped down as Democratic leader. The star of this episode, however, is none other than the late, great, gorgeous Anna May Wong. She just became the first Asian American to be featured on U.S. currency, but do people really know her full story? We invited Professor Shirley Lim, an expert in all things Anna May, to dig deeper into the life of the trailblazing actress, fashion icon and activist. Show Notes:Professor Shirley Lim's books,"Anna May Wong: Performing the Modern""A Feeling of Belonging: Asian American Women's Public Culture, 1930–1960"*Shoes Off Inside will soon migrate to its own platform under the new title. We will make this as seamless as possible when it happens!
Evocative singer/songwriter Anna May is featured guest artist this episode. We chat about heavy stuff like self-knowledge and songwriting -- interspersed with her evocative music and the tale of a black bear encounter that both scared and inspired her. Plus 2 hours of eclectic fresh music from the Bay and beyond.

This week, Sadie is bringing us to speed on the famed Italian director Lina Wertmüller. Wertmüller is known for many things, with careers as a puppeteer, actress, stage manager, and writer, but becoming most well known for her Italian Art House films were critically acclaimed, earning her the title of the first female director to be nominated for an Oscar and an Academy Award. She also is quite famous for her extensively long movie titles and to this day holds the Guinness Book World Record for the longest title of a film, which fits perfectly with her birth name which is quite a mouthful in itself. With a childhood of being expelled from numerous catholic schools and a career of satirical witty comedies, her life is anything but boring and cemented her as a legacy in the world of film. This week, Stauney introduces us to the first Asian-American movie star, the first Asian woman to appear in technicolor, earn a Hollywood walk of fame star, and a million other firsts. As an Asian in a very racist 1950s America, Wong faced a variety of extremely harmful stereotypes and rules that continued to push back against her early dream to be a star. We talk all about the context of her life in Los Angeles, her early dreams and career, her tours in Europe, her film career, and so much more. Prepare to fall in love with the story of a courageous woman who stopped at nothing to accomplish her dreams, and created a space where younger girls could find someone who looked like them up on the silver screen. For episode 131 we have returning guests Anna May Smith and Phil Morris of episode 60 notoriety, as well as Rocky Chase Alterman! This week up for grabs is a Foster-paid trip to Denny's or iHOP. We're loving each other and our guests gives us the laugh track we all wanted. Foster does Bruce Springsteen does Neil Diamond. Anna hates it here. Rocky was recorded 3 months ago. Phil knows a bathroom when he hears one. David's fine. Parents, as we look to start off the New Year right, take a minute to consider your Bible reading plan for 2022. Our guests this week include two PCA moms, Julie Hildebrand and Anna May, who encourage you to prepare yourself, make a plan, and read your Bibles this year! Take a listen and be encouraged! If you want your children to grow spiritually, then you have to model the way - parents, you have to make time to be in God's Word. Priority question - how much time are you (and your children) spending on your phones - social media, etc? What does it look like to have a personal Bible study time? Prepare your heart and mind. Sin will keep you from this Book…and this Book will keep you from sin. Have a reading plan - pick a book, go through the entire Bible (One Year Bible) (could do chronologically, too), pick a theme, etc… Read “repetitiously” - read a passage over and over and over again. Writing in your Bible - journaling Bibles, interwoven/interleaved Bible Check out the incredible resources/videos at The Bible Project The world is constantly communicating with you - make the effort to ensure that you're hearing from God's WORD as well.

Guest Co-Host: Maria Chowdhury Herbalist and Owner of Birth Song Botanicals Company. https://www.birthsongbotanicals.com/pages/meet-maria-chowdhury Elle D'Coda Known as the “wild woman of the Ozarks”, D'Coda is the last of a line of Ozark grannywomen dating back through her Choctaw grandmothers. An herbalist for over 50 years, an instructor for 17 years, now with the Ozark Herbal Academy. Producer of the YouTube broadcast “Herbal Knowledge Keepers”. D'Coda grew up in Colorado with her grandmother (an Ozark Grannywoman) and great-grandmother (a Choctaw medicine woman). At the age of 5 she was diagnosed with Rheumatic Heart Disease, medical doctors said there was no cure, and she would have to stay on antibiotics the rest of her life. In this setting, D'Coda experienced the conflict between modern medicine and Ozark herbalism back in the 1950s. Her mother wanted her to be treated by “modern medicine” but her Grandmother, who insisted that plants were the answer, won out. D'Coda overcame the illness thanks to natural treatments and became her grandmother's dedicated pupil known as the “wild woman of the Ozarks”, D'Coda is the last of a line of Ozark Granny Women. Anna lived in MA were cannabis was legal and helped Mary use cannabis to manage her sleep, pain, and opioid withdrawal after her surgery. We realized that many people could benefit from cannabis but might not have a sister to help them. So we decided to write a book to answer basic questions. The book has been well received across the country and has traveled to countries around the world. Everyone wants to know about THC, CBD, and cannabis products. “A powerhouse of information, guidance, science, and art.” “ A must buy.” The book is a great introduction and a resource for the more experienced consumer. Today’s dialogue is intimate and very precious. As we continue to celebrate our Mother Earth in all her forms, we are delighted and honored to welcome our host Nitsa Citrine’s Mother and Grandmother to the podcast. Heather and Anna share their life journey and evolutions, Christensen family traditions, intuitive connection to nature and enthusiasm for holistic living, all of which they have passed down to Nitsa. Anna May Christensen is a grounded and wise mother, grandmother, Master gardener, lover of beauty, advocate of natural medicine and, as Heather calls her, a “true saint”. Heather Christensen is a certified 5 Rhythms, aerial yoga, dance and movement artist. She has founded several dance studios - offering innovative and interdisciplinary dance since the 1990s, including her current studio Dance Yogis and the Laughing Mama - where Nitsa grew up. Heather trained as a dancer at Juilliard and worked for years as a professional modern and ballet dancer before coming West to study under Gabrielle Roth at Esalen institute and eventually develop her own unique styles of movement and healing arts. As three generations of Projectors, we dive into our Human Design and astrology, individual personalities, gratitude and memories. Our conversation spans many lifetimes as we delight in the reverence we have for our family thread, building upon the health consciousness inherent in each generation, our relationship to dance, the shared connection to holistic medicine and food, and the many lessons we’ve learned from one another. This episode highlights how Motherhood comes in all shapes and sizes, and hopefully will impart precious wisdom, healing gratitude and tenderness for all beings….. It was whilst enjoying a successful career in the U.S., navigating a series of guest roles in high-profile television shows like Homeland, Law & Order, Blue Bloods and The Newsroom, that Fiona Choi was offered a life-changing casting at home - that of Jenny Law, the passionate matriarch of the Law family in the SBS series, The Family Law. Equals part pathos and comedy, the character has become iconic and enabled Choi a unique position in the Australian television landscape; a middle-aged woman of Chinese heritage balancing the roles of Mother and Wife. It’s a universal narrative but the show is a first in its portrayal of the loving but dysfunctional Chinese-Australian family. As can be the want of show business, it seems to have taken a couple of decades for Choi to become ‘an overnight sensation’. She became hooked as a performer during her secondary education, going on to become an avid member of her University theatre organisation. As a graduate of the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts, her early career began in the commercial musicals Rent and Mamma Mia.An impressive theatre resume added recent forays at the Melbourne Theatre Company in The Lady in the Van and the August production of Golden Shield. Her present focus is the construction of a one-woman show celebrating Hollywood’s first Chinese movie star and international style icon, Anna May Wong. The show, Dragon Lady, features Choi in an intimate performance that travels through Anna May’s past and tackles her demons with scandalous reminiscences and sparkling musical numbers. Dragon Lady provokes questions about the struggles of cultural identity and the heavy price of ambition.Dragon Lady will premiere at The Adelaide Cabaret Festival in June, confirming Choi as a talent of great versatility and power. What a treat it was to sit down with Fiona to discuss Dragon Lady, The Family Law, the visibility of our Asian storytellers and Motherhood.

The Dead Ladies Show is a series of entertaining and inspiring talks about women who achieved amazing things against all odds, presented live in Berlin. This podcast is based on that series. Because women's history is everyone's history. In this episode, our 20th (!), Dead Ladies Show co-founder Florian Duijsens introduces us the the fabulous Anna May Wong. ANNA MAY WONG is considered the first Chinese-American Hollywood star. Born and raised in California, she began acting at 14, then left high school to go into silent movies. Soon tiring of all the interesting Asian parts going to white actors, while she played stereotyped roles – “Lotus Flower”, “Honky-Tonk Girl”, “Tiger Lily”, “Mongolian Slave”, “A Flower of the Orient”, etc. – Anna May left for Europe in 1928. Greeted as a star in Berlin, she at least got to play women who didn't die as part of the plot. After her triumphant return to the States, Anna May Wong finally got leading Hollywood roles – but by far not all the ones she wanted, with racism continuing to affect her career and her private life. See images of Anna May, and learn more about her life and against-all-odds career here: deadladiesshow.com/2019/02/14/podcast-20-anna-may-wong/ Follow us on social media @deadladiesshow and please share, rate, and review the show as it helps others to find our feminist women's history podcast The Dead Ladies Show was founded by Florian Duijsens and Katy Derbyshire. Witamy i zapraszamy Was serdecznie do wysłuchania nowego SPECJALNEGO odcinka podcastu Readers Iniative, w którym mieliśmy ogromny zaszczyt gościć pisarkę Agnieszkę Opolską, autorkę książek "Anna May", "Róża" i - zupełnie nowej na rynku wydawniczym - powieści "Joanna". First heard on Mutual featuring Elliott Lewis, who as Leonard Maltin writes in "The Great American Broadcast, "âwore every hat imaginable-actor, producer, and director-also penned a good number of scripts for series he supervised, including Suspense." And Maltin says of this show, "On the terrific late-1940's high-adventure series The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen he held down both jobs simultaneously as director and star." As Maltin continues, âLewis had the ability to make you believe whatever he said. Cast as the skipper on the high-adventure series The Voyage of the Scarlet Queen, he was completely convincing as seagoing ship's master Philip Carney-never corny or overblown." So let a master captain of drama chart a course to exotic ports of call and thrilling adventures. All you have to do is step aboard The Scarlet Queen.
