Welcome to the Wild World of Sin City (2005)!We're throwing it back to one of the most stylish, savage, and straight-up coolest movies of the 2000s — Sin City! In this episode, we gush (and maybe rant a little) about the jaw-dropping visuals, the ultra-noir vibes, and why Marv is still an absolute beast. From Jessica Alba's lasso skills to that unforgettable yellow bastard (yeah, that guy), we're covering it all. Directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (with a dash of Tarantino!), this neo-noir masterpiece brought the graphic novel to life like nothing before it.

Greek tragedy was not realistic, but stylized, ritualized, with actors wearing masks and a Chorus that sang and danced. The opening scene: Prometheus bound to the rock by Hephaestus. Key thematic words are repeated. This is a play about “limits” of all kinds.

We're back, just in time for one of our most stressful events of the year - trying to figure out what to do for another DOFP Halloween special! This time around, we have decided to review X-Statix Presents Dead Girl, a five-issue 2006 miniseries from Peter Milligan, Nick Dragotta, and Michael & Laura Allred. Intended as a coda to Milligan and Allred's then recently-completed, critically acclaimed, cult run on X-Force/X-Statix, Dead Girl sees the titular mutant team up with Doctor Strange and a squad of (at the time) dead superheroes, to travel through the various levels of hell in an attempt to thwart the plans of a group of dead supervillains who are trying to use arcane magic to be resurrected. Stylized as a goofy adventure story and a meta-commentary on the impermanence of death in modern superhero comics, Dead Girl is an interesting read today - especially when remembering this was written before the creation of the MCU and the elevation of Doctor Strange to A-List status. But is it any good? We're here to figure that out. But first, a bunch of talk about 30 Rock, Trev's wedding and Vegas adventures, the recently announced X-Mansion Lego set, MTV veejays, and more. A restless fairy creates a restless trinket with the power to grant its bearer three wishes, but as each wish is grant, the last wish fades away. Genre: Fairy Tale Excerpt: A restless fairy grew bored one day and created a restless trinket, imbuing it with all of the fairy's magic. The magic was all bent toward one purpose, to grant the bearer of the trinket three wishes. The form the trinket first took was as a pendant, which the fairy gave to a human acquaintance with only three instructions…or warnings. What's the Writing Prompt that inspired the story? You are granted three wishes. Each wish can only be used once and not at the same time as another wish. Kinfolk: Black Lands is described by co-founder Idris Brewster as "an Augmented Reality Archive of Black, Brown, LGBTQ, and underrepresented history in general using the power of immersive storytelling and immersive media to uplift stories from our past and connect those with the present and the future." It's an application that features over 20 prominent figures from Black History including digital monuments and statues that you can place in your home or local outdoor environments. There are also a number of public spaces of historical importance that have site-specific AR installations to engage audiences in the places where these histories occurred. I've covered a previous incarnation of Kinfold when it was Movers and Shakers back in episode #656 with Glenn Cantave when it was focused on recontextualizing the Christopher Columbus monument in New York City with augmented reality art. I had a chance to catch up with Idris at Tribeca Immersive 2023 to unpack the current state of the their Kinfolk project as well as Kinfolk app for iOS and Kinfolk app for Android, each with native AR features. We also dig into some future plans for their continued content expansion, looking into more immersive and volumetric work, and the potentials for more speculative future art that taps into the Black Imagination and Afrofuturism potentialities. Kinfolk earned a special jury mention for Tribeca Immersive Storyscapes with a jury comment saying, "A profound and authentic representation of the Black experience in America, KINFOLK's mission to bring history to contemporary audiences through AR technology not only celebrates the richness of Black culture and history in New York City and beyond, but also serves as a powerful tool for education and understanding, making it a standout contender deserving of recognition." Reimagined Vol II: Mahal is the second edition of the Reimagined VR series that premiered at Tribeca Immersive 2023 (see my interview about Volume I from Venice 2022). It's a Quill animation piece that has lots of stylized cinematography, deliberate environmental and character design, a personal story that's very well-told through the lens of mythology. The synopsis says, "Inspired by Philippine mythology, the story focuses on Apolaki, Mayari, Tala, and Hanan, the four immortal children of the recently passed creator god, Bathala. As each of these deities wrestle with the grief of losing Bathala, their all-powerful actions create ripples throughout the universe." I had a chance to catch up with the co-creators of the Reimagined series Michaela Ternasky-Holland (director of Volume II) and Julie Cavaliere (producer of Volume II) to unpack the experiential design process, their shared connections of grief, and innovations in visual and spatial storytelling. Jailbirds is a really well-told, three-part episodic animated VR piece that uses the spatial affordances of VR to tell a compelling metaphoric story about the escapist qualities of virtual reality. It's a character-driven story set within a prison, and it explores themes of liberation in similar ways that virtually-mediated experiences in VR help transport us into another realm. The piece continues to evolve it's cinematic storytelling style that encourages a 180-degree viewing experience of looking forward as there are many dolly shots and fast-past cut scenes that start to penalize the view if you look behind you too much. The series has been produced over a number of years, and it's clear that this type of hyperstylized camera movements develop over the series as they received feedback from the audiences that they not only could handle the movement, but also quite enjoyed it. The end result is a delightful journey into this magical realistic realm of story that director Thomas Villepoux does an excellent job guiding. I had a chance to catch up with him at SXSW where he unpacks many dimensions of the story and it's development process (warning that this conversation contains a fair amount of spoilers), but also the process of working with voice actors who were also theatre performers and how they created a new hybrid workflow of embodied performance with voice acting that was used to create this style that has a unique blend of motion capture and performance capture, but with a distinct amount of stylization in the end result for how these 3-4 characters are able to carry the throughline of the story. Overall, this was the strongest immersive story in competition this year, and is a solid reference point that explores what a story like this is a lot more powerful when you're immersed within the spatial context of these characters. I previously had a chance to chat with Villepoux at Venice for a piece called Mandala that he directed, and I will certainly be keeping an eye out for his future projects as he's got a very distinct idea about how to use the affordances of virtual reality for immersive storytelling.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A stylized dialogue on John Wentworth's claims about markets and optimization, published by So8res on March 25, 2023 on LessWrong. (This is a stylized version of a real conversation, where the first part happened as part of a public debate between John Wentworth and Eliezer Yudkowsky, and the second part happened between John and me over the following morning. The below is combined, stylized, and written in my own voice throughout. The specific concrete examples in John's part of the dialog were produced by me.) J: It seems to me that the field of alignment doesn't understand the most basic theory of agents, and is missing obvious insights when it comes to modeling the sorts of systems they purport to study. N: Do tell. (I'm personally sympathetic to claims of the form "none of you idiots have any idea wtf you're doing", and am quite open to the hypothesis that I've been an idiot in this regard.) J: Consider the coherence theorems that say that if you can't pump resources out of a system, then it's acting agent-like. N: I'd qualify "agent-like with respect to you", if I used the word 'agent' at all (which I mostly wouldn't), and would caveat that there are a few additional subtleties, but sure. J: Some of those subtleties are important! In particular: there's a gap between systems that you can't pump resources out of, and systems that have a utility function. The bridge across that gap is an additional assumption that the system won't pass up certain gains (in a specific sense). Roughly: if you won't accept 1 pepper for 1 mushroom, then you should accept 2 mushrooms for 1 pepper, because a system that accepts both of those trades winds up with strictly more resources than a system that rejects both (by 1 mushroom), and you should be able to do at least that well. N: I agree. J: But some of the epistemically efficient systems around us violate this property. For instance, consider a market for (at least) two goods: peppers and mushrooms; with (at least) two participants: Alice and Bob. Suppose Alice's utility is UA(p,m):=log10(p)+log100(m) (where p and m are the quantities of peppers and mushrooms owned by Alice, respectively), and Bob's utility is UB(p,m):=log100(p)+log10(m) (where p and m are the quantities of peppers and mushrooms owned by Bob, respectively). Example equilibrium: the price is 3 peppers for 1 mushroom. Alice doesn't trade at this price when she has 3log′10(p)=1log′100(m), i.e. 3ln(10)/p=1ln(100)/m, i.e. 3/p=2/m (using the fact that ln(100)=ln(102)=2ln(10)), i.e. when Alice has 1.5 times as many peppers as she has mushrooms. Bob doesn't trade at this price when he has 6 times as many peppers as mushrooms, by a similar argument. So these prices can be an equilibrium whenever Alice has 1.5x as many peppers as mushrooms, and Bob has 6x as many peppers as mushrooms (regardless of the absolute quantities). Now consider offering the market a trade of 25,000 peppers for 10,000 mushrooms. If Alice has 20,000 mushrooms (and thus 30,000 peppers), and Bob has only 1 mushroom (and thus 6 peppers), then the trade is essentially up to Alice. She'd observe that so she (and thus, the market as a whole) would accept. But if Bob had 20,000 mushrooms (and thus 120,000 peppers), and Alice had only 2 mushrooms (and thus 3 peppers), then the trade is essentially up to Bob. He'd observe so he wouldn't take the trade. Thus, we can see that whether a market — considered altogether — takes a trade, depends not only on the prices in the market (which you might have thought of as a sort of epistemic state, and that you might have noted was epistemically efficient with respect to you), but also on the hidden internal state of the market. N: Sure. The argument was never "every epistemically efficient (wrt you) system is an optimizer", but rather "sufficiently good optimizers are ...

N: Sure. The argument was never "every epistemically efficient (wrt you) system is a...
Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy. In the past few weeks we have argued that bond yields have likely started the process of peaking. We believe that the disinflation phase has already begun, and that inflation prints, both the headline and core, will be meaningfully lower in 3-6 months' time. Stylized, we see four stages to inflationary pressures: first the surge in commodity prices, then the spike in goods, followed by services prices, and finally the wages growth. Commodity prices have fallen back significantly over the summer, both metals, softs as well as energy, to be lower by 20-40%. The European natural gas price has almost fully reversed the summer gains, down 65% from the August highs – we have been calling that natural gas prices are set to fall back due to full storages, and that outages during winter are unlikely. At present it is goods prices inflation that is rolling over. Already the corporate pricing power indicator has come off nicely. Even though services prices are more sticky, we suspect that they too could be rolling over in the next months, which might leave wages growth without a catalyst to keep accelerating. Notably, corporate intentions to raise wages also appear to be peaking, and they lead wage growth. Separately, the COVID-driven dislocations continue easing, as seen in a big improvement in suppliers' delivery times, bottlenecks in ports having fully cleared and the global freight/container rates that have reversed their spikes. Finally, as economic activity has weakened closer to contraction territory, bond yields are likely to be capped by subdued levels of growth from here. If the view of bond yields peaking gains traction, this would go a long way in helping the equity market to stabilize, with valuation multiples that would then appear more credible. In terms of market leadership, while for the past two years we championed the Value style, potentially peaking bond yields call for a tactical bottoming out in Growth style. We look for a rebound in Growth names such as ASML, ADYEN and SAP, and globally for parts of Tech to trade better, especially now that some of their earnings disappointments are out in the open. Does style over substance make for a worthwhile movie? If so, what does it take? Is it simply the visual aesthetic? Stylized dialogue perhaps? Or perhaps an unorthodox editing style that transcends the substance of the plot and characters themselves. And if this is possible, how unique, how immersive, how different does that style have to be if it's compensating for an otherwise lacking plot and characters? Well what better movie to put this to the test than the 2006 film "300" directed by Zach Snyder. Love him or hate him he definitely has a perspective on the movies he wants to make. Join us as we discuss "300" on this week's episode of Movies Will Save The World. Theme: Style over Substance

This week's episode features Switzerland-based lettering expert Stefan Kunz. If you're at all into letters you've probably stumbled upon Stefan's work somewhere on the internet. The dude has over half a million Instagram followers, as well as being spread out across various social media. He creates for big-name brands like Coca-Cola, has built his business to the point of hiring others to help, and also teaches his ways to anyone hoping to learn a bit about lettering. Overall, the thing I took away from interviewing Stefan is that he's very clean. Let me explain… The way he presents his work is professional. His courses and marketing are very thought through. His photos and videos are well edited. He takes the time to polish his methodical approach to this art business world. All of that just makes me think of the word “clean.” Maybe something similar to clean-cut, polished, or smooth. After listening to this interview, check out his photos/videos/courses to get a further view of what I mean. Let me know what you think of this week's episode with Stefan Kunz. We are in one of the weirdest economies in history. It's not that the economy is terrible; it's that it's… strange. Some economic indicators suggest that things are awful. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Ways money can make things worse, published by Jan Kulveit on June 21, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This text is trying to describe the most significant ways in which an influx of money can have adverse effects, and make a few specific suggestions on how to mitigate these effects. You may be interested in it if you are in a position where your decisions about money change the incentive landscape in some significant way.It is mostly not concerned about optics and PR, which seems to be getting a lot of attention already. While I started drafting this text before several recent popular posts on funding, and there is some overlap, it covers different observations and considerations, and ultimately aims for a different perspective.Note in advance several things which are not the purpose here: advise less spending, advise more spending, advise frugality, or express general worries. The purpose also isn't to perform a cost-benefit analysis, but just map the "indirect costs of funding". If you wish, suggest some terms which may be part of an impact analysis.Primary audience which I hope can benefit from it is the fast growing group of EAs who are deciding about substantial amounts of money in various roles such as grant evaluators, regrantors or leads of well funded projects. Adverse effects of funding The incentive landscape is always there, and makes some things easier or harder to do. The default incentive landscape is not great: in many ways, all of EA is trying to respond to the fact that some problems will not be solved by default.Adding money into the EA ecosystem changes and will change the landscape. This is great in some ways: some unfortunate gaps can be covered, and important things made easier to do.However, note that due to the fact we don't know what all the important things are, and adding incentives in one place often changes the landscape in other places, it's unlikely the resulting incentive landscape "with money" makes all the important things easier. In practice it seems likely some important things can actually get harder, and some not very good things are easier. While overall it's great we have more money to spend on fixing problems, we should also be tracking that money will sometimes change the incentive landscape in ways that are harmful overall. Tracking this, it seems useful to have a list of common negative effects. These brief adverse effect descriptions are sometimes supplemented by "stylized examples". These examples attempt to make it easier to imagine how the general adverse effects manifests in practice. They do not attempt to describe specific people or existing situations, although they may resemble them Individual epistemic distortion Strong incentives can be dangerous to good epistemics. From a predictive processing point of view, which is my personal best guess for a simple model of what human brains are doing, cognition lacks clear separation between "beliefs" and "goals". Accordingly, instrumental goals like "getting a large sum of money" do impact beliefs, by default. Research on motivated reasoning supports this claim with tons of empirical evidence. Stylized example: Young philosopher applies to an EA outreach program that comes with a large bounty. As a part of the application process, she is required to read a persuasive essay by one of the thought leaders of the EA movement. Part of the young philosopher's mind is highly suspicious of one reasoning step in the essay, but some other part assumes expressing criticism may be at odds with getting the bounty. The critical consideration never really comes to her conscious attention. Stylized example: An assistant professor in AI wants to have several PhDs funded. Hearing about the abundance of funding for AI safety research, he drafts a grant proposal arguing why the researc...

A Glimpse Behind the Curtain of Jesus' Work Lk lets us hear God's affirmation at Jesus' baptism and review humanity behind Jesus. We're about to go to Nazareth, but first a glimpse of wider, unseen reality. All events of Jesus' life bear a vast weight of expectations, hopes, ideas of God. Lk takes us, as a writer can, into experiences beyond our reach, but recognizable. Jesus is Israel in Wilderness, led by God. Hungry. Israel grumbles: the Accuser/diabolos. Stylized, parabolic conversation. Testing, Tempting. Humans involved & at stake! Lk gives us no inner thoughts, but striking patterns that help us explore meaning. A Stone & a Loaf – What's Really Going On? What's the temptation? Not a sin to make bread. What does ‘son of God' mean? Is it true? Surely not like hungry Israel. Surely it blocks out suffering. What's happening? Accuser doesn't know. Jesus goes directly to Israel's story. Dt.8. All food is God's gift. ‘Give us today...' No challenge. But can God's son be a hungry human, broken. 40 days & hunger aren't weakness, but strength to become God's broken bread! Power & Glory – Who Owns the World & History? Accuser knows it's about a kingdom. “Kingdom of God” (4:43). Instant view of world's real kingdoms & authority. Augustus owns it, 2:1. Handed over to Accuser. Now, a Faustian bargain. Sell soul / Worship me & I'll give your heart's desire: all kingdoms. Power of politics, money, fame, violence, pleasure, etc. are gods we glorify as real. The Accuser is deceived! The world belongs to the Lord, creator: Ps 24:1. Son of Man gains all peoples, nations. Dn 7. Messiah receives ends of earth: Ps 2:8. Really?! Jesus goes to the center: Great command & meaning: Dt 6. Love God, Worship God. All other claims to power are passing and usually destructive. Only by putting love of a God of Love at center can life/hope be transformed. Jesus is the substance! Can I Pull God out of Hiding? – Testing God Finally, the Accuser wields our innate doubt. God won't let himself be displayed, proved. We want to cross-examine, judge God. Signs! From the Temple top, make God come out of hiding, prove himself. Prove your own faith. Today, a most popular challenge! Scripture describes many signs, but none compel belief. God hides himself: Isa 45:15. God's presence is there, hidden in plain sight for eyes like Simeon's, Anna's, Mary's. God in Love wants a relationship of faith & love with us humans. That means freedom! We can reject God, rebel, do huge damage, or we can respond in love. God's power doesn't stop us. No test we can impose. God is more than power; God is love. That love is clear to open ears & hearts so as to see Jesus' self-giving love in Death/Life. The Accuser is dumbfounded. Jesus takes Good News of his new kingdom to the people.

"They were very gracious about it." At this time, it's unknown if recurring Flash characters Harry Wells and Jesse Quick managed, both denizens of Earth-2, escaped their world's destruction. However, according to Arrow star Stephen Amell, Oliver witnessing the destruction of an alternate Earth will continue to impact him for the rest of the season. https://www.cbr.com/arrow-clear-destruction-earth-2-flash-writers/ Green Arrow and the Canaries: Arrow Spinoff Series Gets First Promo Poster (Date: 16 Oct 2019) A new poster for the upcoming female-centric Arrow spinoff spotlights the new Green Arrow Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara), as well as the two Canaries (Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy), Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake. The art was shared by Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim. "Arrow's final season bows today, so it feels appropriate to share this glimpse of its future," he wrote. Stylized to look like a comic book, the art features Laurel and Dinah in their current costumes, while Mia seems to be wearing one inspired by her father. https://www.cbr.com/green-arrow-and-the-canaries-arrow-spinoff-series-first-promo-poster/ Crisis on Infinite Earths: Stephen Lobo Cast as Jim Corrigan, AKA The Spectre (Date: 16 Oct 2019) Another DC Comics icon will make their Arrowverse debut during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. IGN can exclusively reveal that Detective Jim Corrigan, human host of the powerful cosmic entity known as the Spectre, will appear in the crossover. The CW has cast Stephen Lobo (Continuum, Supernatural) as Jim Corrigan. The network isn't confirming whether The Spectre himself will appear, though given the character's role in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comic, that seems a distinct possibility. In the comics, Corrigan is a mortal human bonded to the Spectre, a powerful supernatural avenger. That bond is intended to give the so-called "Spirit of Vengeance" a conscience and a better perspective on mortal affairs. The two are among many heroes who do battle with the Anti-Monitor during Crisis. https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/10/16/crisis-on-infinite-earths-spectre-jim-corrigan-casting-crossover-cw-arrow-stephen-lobo FEEDBACK DISCORD: RandyWalker I totally forgot that Earth-2 Laurel went back to Earth-2. NGL I totally didn't pay attention to the ending few episodes of season 7. The FTA sucked then and it's still bad. Adrian Chase's hair was sexy yakk0dotorg very satisfying premiere of Arrow last night. I enjoyed it a lot. StephenJondrew Totally agree - right from start to finish. I loved the ending seconds. It was so good. Also, the Diggle-car scene was a fantastic moment. I enjoyed how that whole Diggle debut played out. E-MAIL: From David: First off I wanted to start off by saying I am going to miss your podcast. I look forward to your arrow recap every week. A couple of thoughts. Am I the only one who notices that the Queen mansion looked different. The foyer didnt look the same as it did in season 1 and 2. Also, do you guys have any speculation as to what happened to Robert Queen on Earth 2? The last thing I remember was that he was the hood. I also know people hate the Flash Forwards but I actually think they are building to a place where Oliver will end up in the future recruiting Mia and her team, since the Monitor told Felicity in the finale of season 7 "Believe me, the world will need her as well" NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kfj3xucI8Xk (Date: 15 Oct 2019) Episode: “Welcome to Hong Kong” [Season 8 Episode 2] Air Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Summary: Oliver, John, Laurel, and Tatsu seek out an important person within The Monitor's plan.
