Greek tragedy was not realistic, but stylized, ritualized, with actors wearing masks and a Chorus that sang and danced. The opening scene: Prometheus bound to the rock by Hephaestus. Key thematic words are repeated. This is a play about “limits” of all kinds.

We're back, just in time for one of our most stressful events of the year - trying to figure out what to do for another DOFP Halloween special! This time around, we have decided to review X-Statix Presents Dead Girl, a five-issue 2006 miniseries from Peter Milligan, Nick Dragotta, and Michael & Laura Allred. Intended as a coda to Milligan and Allred's then recently-completed, critically acclaimed, cult run on X-Force/X-Statix, Dead Girl sees the titular mutant team up with Doctor Strange and a squad of (at the time) dead superheroes, to travel through the various levels of hell in an attempt to thwart the plans of a group of dead supervillains who are trying to use arcane magic to be resurrected. Stylized as a goofy adventure story and a meta-commentary on the impermanence of death in modern superhero comics, Dead Girl is an interesting read today - especially when remembering this was written before the creation of the MCU and the elevation of Doctor Strange to A-List status. But is it any good? We're here to figure that out. But first, a bunch of talk about 30 Rock, Trev's wedding and Vegas adventures, the recently announced X-Mansion Lego set, MTV veejays, and more. A restless fairy creates a restless trinket with the power to grant its bearer three wishes, but as each wish is grant, the last wish fades away. Genre: Fairy Tale Excerpt: A restless fairy grew bored one day and created a restless trinket, imbuing it with all of the fairy's magic. The magic was all bent toward one purpose, to grant the bearer of the trinket three wishes. The form the trinket first took was as a pendant, which the fairy gave to a human acquaintance with only three instructions…or warnings. What's the Writing Prompt that inspired the story? You are granted three wishes. Each wish can only be used once and not at the same time as another wish. Kinfolk: Black Lands is described by co-founder Idris Brewster as "an Augmented Reality Archive of Black, Brown, LGBTQ, and underrepresented history in general using the power of immersive storytelling and immersive media to uplift stories from our past and connect those with the present and the future." It's an application that features over 20 prominent figures from Black History including digital monuments and statues that you can place in your home or local outdoor environments. There are also a number of public spaces of historical importance that have site-specific AR installations to engage audiences in the places where these histories occurred. I've covered a previous incarnation of Kinfold when it was Movers and Shakers back in episode #656 with Glenn Cantave when it was focused on recontextualizing the Christopher Columbus monument in New York City with augmented reality art. I had a chance to catch up with Idris at Tribeca Immersive 2023 to unpack the current state of the their Kinfolk project as well as Kinfolk app for iOS and Kinfolk app for Android, each with native AR features. We also dig into some future plans for their continued content expansion, looking into more immersive and volumetric work, and the potentials for more speculative future art that taps into the Black Imagination and Afrofuturism potentialities. Kinfolk earned a special jury mention for Tribeca Immersive Storyscapes with a jury comment saying, "A profound and authentic representation of the Black experience in America, KINFOLK's mission to bring history to contemporary audiences through AR technology not only celebrates the richness of Black culture and history in New York City and beyond, but also serves as a powerful tool for education and understanding, making it a standout contender deserving of recognition." Reimagined Vol II: Mahal is the second edition of the Reimagined VR series that premiered at Tribeca Immersive 2023 (see my interview about Volume I from Venice 2022). It's a Quill animation piece that has lots of stylized cinematography, deliberate environmental and character design, a personal story that's very well-told through the lens of mythology. The synopsis says, "Inspired by Philippine mythology, the story focuses on Apolaki, Mayari, Tala, and Hanan, the four immortal children of the recently passed creator god, Bathala. As each of these deities wrestle with the grief of losing Bathala, their all-powerful actions create ripples throughout the universe." I had a chance to catch up with the co-creators of the Reimagined series Michaela Ternasky-Holland (director of Volume II) and Julie Cavaliere (producer of Volume II) to unpack the experiential design process, their shared connections of grief, and innovations in visual and spatial storytelling. After a few unfortunate delays, Zak and Aaron are back to ask you a simple question: Do you value visual extravagance over gameplay excellence, or do you think they can work together? Jailbirds is a really well-told, three-part episodic animated VR piece that uses the spatial affordances of VR to tell a compelling metaphoric story about the escapist qualities of virtual reality. It's a character-driven story set within a prison, and it explores themes of liberation in similar ways that virtually-mediated experiences in VR help transport us into another realm. The piece continues to evolve it's cinematic storytelling style that encourages a 180-degree viewing experience of looking forward as there are many dolly shots and fast-past cut scenes that start to penalize the view if you look behind you too much. The series has been produced over a number of years, and it's clear that this type of hyperstylized camera movements develop over the series as they received feedback from the audiences that they not only could handle the movement, but also quite enjoyed it. The end result is a delightful journey into this magical realistic realm of story that director Thomas Villepoux does an excellent job guiding. I had a chance to catch up with him at SXSW where he unpacks many dimensions of the story and it's development process (warning that this conversation contains a fair amount of spoilers), but also the process of working with voice actors who were also theatre performers and how they created a new hybrid workflow of embodied performance with voice acting that was used to create this style that has a unique blend of motion capture and performance capture, but with a distinct amount of stylization in the end result for how these 3-4 characters are able to carry the throughline of the story. Overall, this was the strongest immersive story in competition this year, and is a solid reference point that explores what a story like this is a lot more powerful when you're immersed within the spatial context of these characters. I previously had a chance to chat with Villepoux at Venice for a piece called Mandala that he directed, and I will certainly be keeping an eye out for his future projects as he's got a very distinct idea about how to use the affordances of virtual reality for immersive storytelling.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: A stylized dialogue on John Wentworth's claims about markets and optimization, published by So8res on March 25, 2023 on LessWrong. (This is a stylized version of a real conversation, where the first part happened as part of a public debate between John Wentworth and Eliezer Yudkowsky, and the second part happened between John and me over the following morning. The below is combined, stylized, and written in my own voice throughout. The specific concrete examples in John's part of the dialog were produced by me.) J: It seems to me that the field of alignment doesn't understand the most basic theory of agents, and is missing obvious insights when it comes to modeling the sorts of systems they purport to study. N: Do tell. (I'm personally sympathetic to claims of the form "none of you idiots have any idea wtf you're doing", and am quite open to the hypothesis that I've been an idiot in this regard.) J: Consider the coherence theorems that say that if you can't pump resources out of a system, then it's acting agent-like. N: I'd qualify "agent-like with respect to you", if I used the word 'agent' at all (which I mostly wouldn't), and would caveat that there are a few additional subtleties, but sure. J: Some of those subtleties are important! In particular: there's a gap between systems that you can't pump resources out of, and systems that have a utility function. The bridge across that gap is an additional assumption that the system won't pass up certain gains (in a specific sense). Roughly: if you won't accept 1 pepper for 1 mushroom, then you should accept 2 mushrooms for 1 pepper, because a system that accepts both of those trades winds up with strictly more resources than a system that rejects both (by 1 mushroom), and you should be able to do at least that well. N: I agree. J: But some of the epistemically efficient systems around us violate this property. For instance, consider a market for (at least) two goods: peppers and mushrooms; with (at least) two participants: Alice and Bob. Suppose Alice's utility is UA(p,m):=log10(p)+log100(m) (where p and m are the quantities of peppers and mushrooms owned by Alice, respectively), and Bob's utility is UB(p,m):=log100(p)+log10(m) (where p and m are the quantities of peppers and mushrooms owned by Bob, respectively). Example equilibrium: the price is 3 peppers for 1 mushroom. Alice doesn't trade at this price when she has 3log′10(p)=1log′100(m), i.e. 3ln(10)/p=1ln(100)/m, i.e. 3/p=2/m (using the fact that ln(100)=ln(102)=2ln(10)), i.e. when Alice has 1.5 times as many peppers as she has mushrooms. Bob doesn't trade at this price when he has 6 times as many peppers as mushrooms, by a similar argument. So these prices can be an equilibrium whenever Alice has 1.5x as many peppers as mushrooms, and Bob has 6x as many peppers as mushrooms (regardless of the absolute quantities). Now consider offering the market a trade of 25,000 peppers for 10,000 mushrooms. If Alice has 20,000 mushrooms (and thus 30,000 peppers), and Bob has only 1 mushroom (and thus 6 peppers), then the trade is essentially up to Alice. She'd observe that so she (and thus, the market as a whole) would accept. But if Bob had 20,000 mushrooms (and thus 120,000 peppers), and Alice had only 2 mushrooms (and thus 3 peppers), then the trade is essentially up to Bob. He'd observe so he wouldn't take the trade. Thus, we can see that whether a market — considered altogether — takes a trade, depends not only on the prices in the market (which you might have thought of as a sort of epistemic state, and that you might have noted was epistemically efficient with respect to you), but also on the hidden internal state of the market. N: Sure. The argument was never "every epistemically efficient (wrt you) system is an optimizer", but rather "sufficiently good optimizers are ...

N: Sure. The argument was never "every epistemically efficient (wrt you) system is a...
Link to original articleWelcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. Speaker: Mislav Matejka, Head of Global Equity Strategy. In the past few weeks we have argued that bond yields have likely started the process of peaking. We believe that the disinflation phase has already begun, and that inflation prints, both the headline and core, will be meaningfully lower in 3-6 months' time. Stylized, we see four stages to inflationary pressures: first the surge in commodity prices, then the spike in goods, followed by services prices, and finally the wages growth. Commodity prices have fallen back significantly over the summer, both metals, softs as well as energy, to be lower by 20-40%. The European natural gas price has almost fully reversed the summer gains, down 65% from the August highs – we have been calling that natural gas prices are set to fall back due to full storages, and that outages during winter are unlikely. At present it is goods prices inflation that is rolling over. Already the corporate pricing power indicator has come off nicely. Even though services prices are more sticky, we suspect that they too could be rolling over in the next months, which might leave wages growth without a catalyst to keep accelerating. Notably, corporate intentions to raise wages also appear to be peaking, and they lead wage growth. Separately, the COVID-driven dislocations continue easing, as seen in a big improvement in suppliers' delivery times, bottlenecks in ports having fully cleared and the global freight/container rates that have reversed their spikes. Finally, as economic activity has weakened closer to contraction territory, bond yields are likely to be capped by subdued levels of growth from here. If the view of bond yields peaking gains traction, this would go a long way in helping the equity market to stabilize, with valuation multiples that would then appear more credible. In terms of market leadership, while for the past two years we championed the Value style, potentially peaking bond yields call for a tactical bottoming out in Growth style. We look for a rebound in Growth names such as ASML, ADYEN and SAP, and globally for parts of Tech to trade better, especially now that some of their earnings disappointments are out in the open. Does style over substance make for a worthwhile movie? If so, what does it take? Is it simply the visual aesthetic? Stylized dialogue perhaps? Or perhaps an unorthodox editing style that transcends the substance of the plot and characters themselves. And if this is possible, how unique, how immersive, how different does that style have to be if it's compensating for an otherwise lacking plot and characters? Well what better movie to put this to the test than the 2006 film "300" directed by Zach Snyder. Love him or hate him he definitely has a perspective on the movies he wants to make. Join us as we discuss "300" on this week's episode of Movies Will Save The World. Theme: Style over Substance

This week's episode features Switzerland-based lettering expert Stefan Kunz. If you're at all into letters you've probably stumbled upon Stefan's work somewhere on the internet. The dude has over half a million Instagram followers, as well as being spread out across various social media. He creates for big-name brands like Coca-Cola, has built his business to the point of hiring others to help, and also teaches his ways to anyone hoping to learn a bit about lettering. Overall, the thing I took away from interviewing Stefan is that he's very clean. Let me explain… The way he presents his work is professional. His courses and marketing are very thought through. His photos and videos are well edited. He takes the time to polish his methodical approach to this art business world. All of that just makes me think of the word “clean.” Maybe something similar to clean-cut, polished, or smooth. We are in one of the weirdest economies in history. It's not that the economy is terrible; it's that it's… strange. Some economic indicators suggest that things are awful. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Ways money can make things worse, published by Jan Kulveit on June 21, 2022 on The Effective Altruism Forum. This text is trying to describe the most significant ways in which an influx of money can have adverse effects, and make a few specific suggestions on how to mitigate these effects. You may be interested in it if you are in a position where your decisions about money change the incentive landscape in some significant way.It is mostly not concerned about optics and PR, which seems to be getting a lot of attention already. While I started drafting this text before several recent popular posts on funding, and there is some overlap, it covers different observations and considerations, and ultimately aims for a different perspective.Note in advance several things which are not the purpose here: advise less spending, advise more spending, advise frugality, or express general worries. The purpose also isn't to perform a cost-benefit analysis, but just map the "indirect costs of funding". If you wish, suggest some terms which may be part of an impact analysis.Primary audience which I hope can benefit from it is the fast growing group of EAs who are deciding about substantial amounts of money in various roles such as grant evaluators, regrantors or leads of well funded projects. Adverse effects of funding The incentive landscape is always there, and makes some things easier or harder to do. The default incentive landscape is not great: in many ways, all of EA is trying to respond to the fact that some problems will not be solved by default.Adding money into the EA ecosystem changes and will change the landscape. This is great in some ways: some unfortunate gaps can be covered, and important things made easier to do.However, note that due to the fact we don't know what all the important things are, and adding incentives in one place often changes the landscape in other places, it's unlikely the resulting incentive landscape "with money" makes all the important things easier. In practice it seems likely some important things can actually get harder, and some not very good things are easier. While overall it's great we have more money to spend on fixing problems, we should also be tracking that money will sometimes change the incentive landscape in ways that are harmful overall. Tracking this, it seems useful to have a list of common negative effects. These brief adverse effect descriptions are sometimes supplemented by "stylized examples". These examples attempt to make it easier to imagine how the general adverse effects manifests in practice. They do not attempt to describe specific people or existing situations, although they may resemble them Individual epistemic distortion Strong incentives can be dangerous to good epistemics. From a predictive processing point of view, which is my personal best guess for a simple model of what human brains are doing, cognition lacks clear separation between "beliefs" and "goals". Accordingly, instrumental goals like "getting a large sum of money" do impact beliefs, by default. Research on motivated reasoning supports this claim with tons of empirical evidence. Stylized example: Young philosopher applies to an EA outreach program that comes with a large bounty. As a part of the application process, she is required to read a persuasive essay by one of the thought leaders of the EA movement. Part of the young philosopher's mind is highly suspicious of one reasoning step in the essay, but some other part assumes expressing criticism may be at odds with getting the bounty. The critical consideration never really comes to her conscious attention. Stylized example: An assistant professor in AI wants to have several PhDs funded. Hearing about the abundance of funding for AI safety research, he drafts a grant proposal arguing why the researc...
Cinematographer Miahi Mălaimare Jr. understands the power of images to communicate a feeling right away, and in a more straightforward way than with spoken language. For The Harder They Fall, Mihai discovered that as both a director and a singer-songwriter, Jeymes Samuel communicates through music, and the two enjoyed working together to find the visual language of the film. The Harder They Fall is a mashup of blaxploitation, spaghetti Western and musical in one sprawling and stylish package. Samuel had previously made a shorter Western called They Die By Dawn, but Mihai had never shot a Western before. They were prepping to shoot in March of 2020 in New Mexico, then everything was halted due to the pandemic. Finally, in July of 2020 Jeymes called up Mihai to see if he could be ready to shoot within a few weeks. They headed out to New Mexico and shot the film while under strict COVID protocols. Both Mihai and Samuel took visual ideas for The Harder They Fall from The Wild Bunch and several Sergio Leone movies. Finding the rhythm within a scene was a huge part of the film. Samuel had a few songs written into the script and would often play music on set. The script was very challenging with several complicated shots, a large cast, dealing with horses, guns, set pieces and period costumes, but Jeymes Samuel and Mihai were able to achieve Samuel's vision with prep, discussions every night, and many, many rehearsals. You can watch The Harder They Fall on Netflix. Mihai recently wrapped the currently untitled HBO drama series about the Lakers in the 1980's. Lollipop Shaders' Christos Obretenov and befores & afters' Ian Failes discuss the explosion of stylized rendering in animation right now.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain of Jesus' Work Lk lets us hear God's affirmation at Jesus' baptism and review humanity behind Jesus. We're about to go to Nazareth, but first a glimpse of wider, unseen reality. All events of Jesus' life bear a vast weight of expectations, hopes, ideas of God. Lk takes us, as a writer can, into experiences beyond our reach, but recognizable. Jesus is Israel in Wilderness, led by God. Hungry. Israel grumbles: the Accuser/diabolos. Stylized, parabolic conversation. Testing, Tempting. Humans involved & at stake! Lk gives us no inner thoughts, but striking patterns that help us explore meaning. A Stone & a Loaf – What's Really Going On? What's the temptation? Not a sin to make bread. What does ‘son of God' mean? Is it true? Surely not like hungry Israel. Surely it blocks out suffering. What's happening? Accuser doesn't know. Jesus goes directly to Israel's story. Dt.8. All food is God's gift. ‘Give us today...' No challenge. But can God's son be a hungry human, broken. 40 days & hunger aren't weakness, but strength to become God's broken bread! Power & Glory – Who Owns the World & History? Accuser knows it's about a kingdom. “Kingdom of God” (4:43). Instant view of world's real kingdoms & authority. Augustus owns it, 2:1. Handed over to Accuser. Now, a Faustian bargain. Sell soul / Worship me & I'll give your heart's desire: all kingdoms. Power of politics, money, fame, violence, pleasure, etc. are gods we glorify as real. The Accuser is deceived! The world belongs to the Lord, creator: Ps 24:1. Son of Man gains all peoples, nations. Dn 7. Messiah receives ends of earth: Ps 2:8. Really?! Jesus goes to the center: Great command & meaning: Dt 6. Love God, Worship God. All other claims to power are passing and usually destructive. Only by putting love of a God of Love at center can life/hope be transformed. Jesus is the substance! Can I Pull God out of Hiding? – Testing God Finally, the Accuser wields our innate doubt. God won't let himself be displayed, proved. We want to cross-examine, judge God. Signs! From the Temple top, make God come out of hiding, prove himself. Prove your own faith. Today, a most popular challenge! Scripture describes many signs, but none compel belief. God hides himself: Isa 45:15. God's presence is there, hidden in plain sight for eyes like Simeon's, Anna's, Mary's. God in Love wants a relationship of faith & love with us humans. That means freedom! We can reject God, rebel, do huge damage, or we can respond in love. God's power doesn't stop us. No test we can impose. God is more than power; God is love. That love is clear to open ears & hearts so as to see Jesus' self-giving love in Death/Life. The Accuser is dumbfounded. Jesus takes Good News of his new kingdom to the people.
We've got a very important issue to talk about this week. Apple wants to look at your private pictures. They've made such a big deal about privacy for years, so what's changed and why can't we trust them anymore? What have you done Tim Apple? The Australian government really hasn't liked supporting the games industry, despite years of lobbying and studies into how great the industry is for the economy. Someone's finally got through to them and we'll be getting changes to tax and visas to help encourage AAA development.Jason Mamoa thinks superheroes are like Greek mythology. The game lacked many of its core promised features when it launched, resulting in heavy fan backlash. Within two years of its rollout, the tide started turning in No Man's Sky's favor, thanks in large part to updates that transformed the experience. NEXT counted as the first of such changes, ushering in multiplayer gameplay options that Hello Games teased in the lead up to launch. This particular update also overhauled the graphics and introduced refined base-building mechanics. Hello Games' efforts didn't stop there either; as such, the redemption arc for No Man's Sky has been rather impressive to watch unfold. With the game now celebrating its fifth year anniversary, Hello Games has put out a short video looking back at all of the updates we've seen so far, along with a tease of what's coming next.9th August 2021 – 25th anniversary of Escape from L.A. - https://movieweb.com/escape-from-la-25th-anniversary/Stylized on-screen as John Carpenter's Escape from L.A. A 1996 American post-apocalyptic action film co-written, co-scored, and directed by John Carpenter, co-written and produced by Debra Hill and Kurt Russell, with Russell also starring as Snake Plissken. A sequel to Escape from New York, Escape from L.A. co-stars Steve Buscemi, Stacy Keach, Bruce Campbell, and Pam Grier. The film gained a strong cult following. The film was in development for over 10 years. At one point, a script was commissioned in 1987 and was written by screenwriter Coleman Luck, with Dino De Laurentiis's company producing. Carpenter later described the script as "too light, too campy". In time, Carpenter and Kurt Russell got together to write with their long-time collaborator Debra Hill. Carpenter insists that Russell's persistence allowed the film to be made, since "Snake Plissken was a character he loved and wanted to play again." At the beginning of the film, Kurt Russell wears his costume from the original film, which still fits after fifteen years. The film takes place in 2013.10th August 2021 – 60th Anniversary of Operation Ranch Hand, spraying an estimated 20 million US gallons (76,000 m3) of defoliants and herbicides over rural areas of South Vietnam in an attempt to deprive the Viet Cong of food and vegetation cover - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Ranch_HandOperation Ranch Hand was a U.S. military operation during the Vietnam War, lasting from 1962 until 1971. Largely inspired by the British use of 2,4,5-T and 2,4-D (Agent Orange) during the Malayan Emergency in the 1950s, it was part of the overall herbicidal warfare program during the war called "Operation Trail Dust". Ranch Hand involved spraying an estimated 20 million U.S. gallons (76,000 m3) of defoliants and herbicides over rural areas of South Vietnam in an attempt to deprive the Viet Cong of food and vegetation cover. Areas of Laos and Cambodia were also sprayed to a lesser extent. Nearly 20,000 sorties were flown between 1961 and 1971. The herbicides were sprayed by the U.S. Air Force flying C-123s using the call sign "Hades". The planes were fitted with specially developed spray tanks with a capacity of 1,000 U.S. gallons (4 m3) of herbicides. A plane sprayed a swath of land that was 80 meters wide and 16 kilometers (10 mi) long in about 4½ minutes, at a rate of about 3 U.S. gallons per acre (3 m3/km2). Sorties usually consisted of three to five aircraft flying side by side. 95% of the herbicides and defoliants used in the war were sprayed by the U.S. Air Force as part of Operation Ranch Hand. The remaining 5% were sprayed by the U.S. Chemical Corps, other military branches, and the Republic of Vietnam using hand sprayers, spray trucks, helicopters and boats, primarily around U.S. military installations. The use of herbicides in the Vietnam War was controversial from the beginning, particularly for crop destruction. The scientific community began to protest the use of herbicides in Vietnam as early as 1964, when the Federation of American Scientists objected to the use of defoliants. In 1967, seventeen Nobel laureates and 5,000 other scientists signed a petition asking for the immediate end to the use of herbicides in Vietnam. According to the Vietnamese government, the US program exposed approximately 4.8 million Vietnamese people to Agent Orange, resulted in 400,000 deaths due to a range of cancers and other ailments. The Vietnamese population has suffered a range of ailments with three million Vietnamese people suffering health problems, one million birth defects caused directly by exposure to Agent Orange, and 24% of the area of Vietnam being defoliated.12th August 2021 – 40th birthday of the IBM 5150 - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Personal_Computer#DebutOn August 12, 1981, Don Esteridge, who was unknown at the time, announced the release of the new personal computer created by his company. The head of development at IBM Entry Level Systems presented the 5150, or IBM PC, a concept that would revolutionize the computer industry forever. The machine was based on open architecture and a substantial market of third-party peripherals, expansion cards and software grew up rapidly to support it. The PC had a substantial influence on the personal computer market. The specifications of the IBM PC became one of the most popular computer design standards in the world, and the only significant competition it faced from a non-compatible platform throughout the 1980s was from the Apple Macintosh product line. The majority of modern personal computers are distant descendants of the IBM PC.Pricing started at $1,565 for a configuration with 16K RAM, Color Graphics Adapter, and no disk drives. The price was designed to compete with comparable machines in the market. For comparison, the Datamaster, announced two weeks earlier as IBM's least expensive computer, cost $10,000. IBM's marketing campaign licensed the likeness of Charlie Chaplin's character "The Little Tramp" for a series of advertisements based on Chaplin's movies, played by Billy Scudder. The PC was IBM's first attempt to sell a computer through retail channels rather than directly to customers. Reception was overwhelmingly positive, with sales estimates from analysts suggesting billions of dollars in sales over the next few years, and the IBM PC immediately became the talk of the entire computing industry. Dealers were overwhelmed with orders, including customers offering pre-payment for machines with no guaranteed delivery date. By the time the machine was shipping, the term "PC" was becoming a household name.Remembrances10th August 2010 - David L. Wolper - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_L._WolperAmerican television and film producer, responsible for shows such as Roots, The Thorn Birds, North and South, L.A. Confidential, and Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971). He was awarded the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 57th Academy Awards in 1985 for his work producing the opening and closing ceremonies of the XXIIIrd Olympiad, Los Angeles 1984 as well as helping to bring the games to L.A. His 1971 film (as executive producer) about the study of insects, The Hellstrom Chronicle, won an Academy Award. On March 13, 1974, one of his crews filming a National Geographic history of Australopithecus at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area was killed when their Sierra Pacific Airlines Corvair 440 slammed into the White Mountains shortly after takeoff from Eastern Sierra Regional Airport in Bishop, California, killing all 35 on board, including 31 Wolper crew members. The filmed segment was recovered in the wreckage and was broadcast in the television series Primal Man. The cause of the crash remains unsolved. In 1988, Wolper was inducted into the Television Hall of Fame. For his work on television, he had received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He died from congestive heart disease and complications of Parkinson's disease at the age of 82 in Beverly Hills, California.Famous Birthdays10th August 1889 – Charles Darrow - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_DarrowAmerican who modified the design of Lizzie Magie's original invention The Landlord's Game. He became the first millionaire game designer in history, and although Magie patented her invention she received only $500. Parker Brothers falsely credited Darrow as the original inventor. While Darrow eventually sold his version of Monopoly to Parker Brothers, claiming it to be his own invention, modern historians credit Darrow as just one of the game's final developers. Monopoly is a board game which focuses on the acquisition of fictional real estate titles, with the incorporation of elements of chance. After losing his job at a sales company following the Stock Market Crash of 1929, Darrow worked at various odd jobs. Seeing his neighbors and acquaintances play a board game in which the object was to buy and sell property, he decided to publish his own version of the game, with the help of his first son, William, and his wife Esther. Darrow marketed his version of the game under the name Monopoly. In truth, Darrow was just one of many people in the American Midwest and East Coast who had been playing a game of buying and trading property. The game's direct ancestor was The Landlord's Game, created by Elizabeth Magie. The Darrow family initially made their game sets on flexible, round pieces of oilcloth instead of rigid, square carton. Charles drew the designs of the properties with drafting pens, and his son and wife filled in the spaces with colors and made the title deed cards and Chance and Community Chest cards. In 1970, three years after Darrow's death, Atlantic City placed a commemorative plaque in his honor on The Boardwalk, near the corner of Park Place. In 1973 Ralph Anspach, an economics professor at San Francisco State University, produced Anti-Monopoly, a game similar to Monopoly, and for this was sued by Parker Brothers. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.Events of Interest10th August 1960 – Dinosaurus! was released - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0053768/ On this day in 1960, it was 'Jurassic Park' all over again with the release of Dinosaurus! The feature starred Ward Ramsey and Kristina Hanson, and here's the plot summary: "After undersea explosions near a Caribbean island, prehistoric creatures are unleashed on the unsuspecting population. Freed from his watery tomb, as well, is a very friendly Neanderthal man who proceeds to befriend a local orphan boy. The boy, Neanderthal and irritated dinosaur make for an interesting dramatic climax." The leading role was intended for Steve McQueen, who starred in The Blob two years earlier, also produced by Harris and directed by Yeaworth. McQueen passed on the film to make The Magnificent Seven instead. The dinosaurs were filmed using the technique of stop-motion animation as well as puppets for close-ups. The film promulgates the naïve idea that herbivorous animals (such as the brontosaurus) are not dangerous (a similar claim was made in Spielberg's 'Jurassic Park', 1993). The cape buffalo is one of the most aggressive and dangerous animals in Africa (and only weighs about 5% of what a brontosaurus is estimated to have weighed). Marcel Delgado was given less than half the time originally agreed upon to create the dinosaur models used in the film. The studio initially agreed to give him five to six weeks, as he requested, but two weeks later he was told that they would begin production on Tuesday. When Betty is captured by the neanderthal and taken to his cave, she's wearing a white dress and a pearl necklace. Combined with her red hair, she bears a striking resemblance to Wilma Flintstone, one of the stars of the TV cartoon series "The Flintstones" (1960), which would debut on American television one month after this movies US release (coincidentally, Betty is the name of Wilma's best friend).10th August 1990 – The Magellan space probe reaches Venus. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Magellan_(spacecraft)#Orbital_encounter_of_Venus On August 10, 1990, the American Magellan probe, named after the explorer Ferdinand Magellan, arrived at its orbit around the planet and started a mission of detailed radar mapping at a frequency of 2.38 GHz. It began the orbital insertion maneuver which placed the spacecraft into a three-hour, nine minute, elliptical orbit that brought the spacecraft 295-kilometers from the surface at about 10 degrees North during the periapsis and out to 7762-kilometers during apoapsis. During each orbit, the space probe captured radar data while the spacecraft was closest to the surface, and then transmit it back to Earth as it moved away from Venus. This maneuver required extensive use of the reaction wheels to rotate the spacecraft as it imaged the surface for 37-minutes and as it pointed toward Earth for two hours. The primary mission intended for the spacecraft to return images of at least 70 percent of the surface during one Venusian day, which lasts 243 Earth days as the planet slowly spins. To avoid overly-redundant data at the highest and lowest latitudes, the Magellan probe alternated between a Northern-swath, a region designated as 90 degrees north latitude to 54 degrees south latitude, and a Southern-swath, designated as 76 degrees north latitude to 68 degrees south latitude. However, due to periapsis being 10 degrees north of the equatorial line, imaging the South Pole region was unlikely. The resulting maps were comparable to visible-light photographs of other planets, and are still the most detailed in existence. Magellan greatly improved scientific understanding of the geology of Venus: the probe found no signs of plate tectonics, but the scarcity of impact craters suggested the surface was relatively young, and there were lava channels thousands of kilometers long.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/Email - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comSupport via Podhero- https://podhero.com/podcast/449127/nerds-amalgamated See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

#reiforcementlearning #gan #imitationlearning Learning from demonstrations is a fascinating topic, but what if the demonstrations are not exactly the behaviors we want to learn? Can we adhere to a dataset of demonstrations and still achieve a specified goal? This paper uses GANs to combine goal-achieving reinforcement learning with imitation learning and learns to perform well at a given task while doing so in the style of a given presented dataset. The resulting behaviors include many realistic-looking transitions between the demonstrated movements. Supplementary Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6fBS... Abstract: Synthesizing graceful and life-like behaviors for physically simulated characters has been a fundamental challenge in computer animation. Data-driven methods that leverage motion tracking are a prominent class of techniques for producing high fidelity motions for a wide range of behaviors. However, the effectiveness of these tracking-based methods often hinges on carefully designed objective functions, and when applied to large and diverse motion datasets, these methods require significant additional machinery to select the appropriate motion for the character to track in a given scenario. In this work, we propose to obviate the need to manually design imitation objectives and mechanisms for motion selection by utilizing a fully automated approach based on adversarial imitation learning. High-level task objectives that the character should perform can be specified by relatively simple reward functions, while the low-level style of the character's behaviors can be specified by a dataset of unstructured motion clips, without any explicit clip selection or sequencing. These motion clips are used to train an adversarial motion prior, which specifies style-rewards for training the character through reinforcement learning (RL). The adversarial RL procedure automatically selects which motion to perform, dynamically interpolating and generalizing from the dataset. Our system produces high-quality motions that are comparable to those achieved by state-of-the-art tracking-based techniques, while also being able to easily accommodate large datasets of unstructured motion clips. Composition of disparate skills emerges automatically from the motion prior, without requiring a high-level motion planner or other task-specific annotations of the motion clips. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework on a diverse cast of complex simulated characters and a challenging suite of motor control tasks. The whimsy and delight and colour of the natural world as expressed by The Group of Seven, Ted Harrison, and Norval Morrisseau have remained an inspiration for me since I began painting. My paintings BURST with BOLD, VIBRANT colour , STYLIZED shapes are full of energy and joy. My black outlines create the energy the shapes describe the story and as I finish each piece I am in “awe” of having done it. As a working mom, I often struggle to find the time and balance to cook healthy, home cooked meals that will fuel my family and myself and not feeling overwhelmed with the amount of time it takes to plan, shop, prep & cook healthy dinners. I’ll admit, I was skeptical when I signed up for Good food. I tried out a promo code and told myself, I would just order one box to check it out. Well, 6 weeks later, I’m hooked. From the first step of clicking to order, and than receiving the fresh ingredients and step-by-step recipes, it has all been seamless and easy. My mind has been cleared from the daily struggle of ‘What’s for dinner?’ and knowing that my meals will arrive on my doorstep each week, unless I choose to skip a delivery (which by the way, I can do as often as I want) We will be away over Christmas and I’ve already been able to make plans to skip the meals until the new year. You can even cancel your subscription at any time. There are so many recipe suggestions or you can make it even easier, like I choose too, by letting them curate the meals I get and every single one my family has tried has been delicious. "They were very gracious about it." At this time, it's unknown if recurring Flash characters Harry Wells and Jesse Quick managed, both denizens of Earth-2, escaped their world's destruction. However, according to Arrow star Stephen Amell, Oliver witnessing the destruction of an alternate Earth will continue to impact him for the rest of the season. https://www.cbr.com/arrow-clear-destruction-earth-2-flash-writers/ Green Arrow and the Canaries: Arrow Spinoff Series Gets First Promo Poster (Date: 16 Oct 2019) A new poster for the upcoming female-centric Arrow spinoff spotlights the new Green Arrow Mia Smoak (Katherine McNamara), as well as the two Canaries (Katie Cassidy and Juliana Harkavy), Laurel Lance and Dinah Drake. The art was shared by Arrow co-creator Marc Guggenheim. "Arrow's final season bows today, so it feels appropriate to share this glimpse of its future," he wrote. Stylized to look like a comic book, the art features Laurel and Dinah in their current costumes, while Mia seems to be wearing one inspired by her father. https://www.cbr.com/green-arrow-and-the-canaries-arrow-spinoff-series-first-promo-poster/ Crisis on Infinite Earths: Stephen Lobo Cast as Jim Corrigan, AKA The Spectre (Date: 16 Oct 2019) Another DC Comics icon will make their Arrowverse debut during the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover. IGN can exclusively reveal that Detective Jim Corrigan, human host of the powerful cosmic entity known as the Spectre, will appear in the crossover. The CW has cast Stephen Lobo (Continuum, Supernatural) as Jim Corrigan. The network isn't confirming whether The Spectre himself will appear, though given the character's role in the original Crisis on Infinite Earths comic, that seems a distinct possibility. In the comics, Corrigan is a mortal human bonded to the Spectre, a powerful supernatural avenger. That bond is intended to give the so-called "Spirit of Vengeance" a conscience and a better perspective on mortal affairs. The two are among many heroes who do battle with the Anti-Monitor during Crisis. https://www.ign.com/articles/2019/10/16/crisis-on-infinite-earths-spectre-jim-corrigan-casting-crossover-cw-arrow-stephen-lobo FEEDBACK DISCORD: RandyWalker I totally forgot that Earth-2 Laurel went back to Earth-2. NGL I totally didn't pay attention to the ending few episodes of season 7. The FTA sucked then and it's still bad. Adrian Chase's hair was sexy yakk0dotorg very satisfying premiere of Arrow last night. I enjoyed it a lot. StephenJondrew Totally agree - right from start to finish. I loved the ending seconds. It was so good. Also, the Diggle-car scene was a fantastic moment. I enjoyed how that whole Diggle debut played out. E-MAIL: From David: First off I wanted to start off by saying I am going to miss your podcast. I look forward to your arrow recap every week. A couple of thoughts. Am I the only one who notices that the Queen mansion looked different. The foyer didnt look the same as it did in season 1 and 2. Also, do you guys have any speculation as to what happened to Robert Queen on Earth 2? The last thing I remember was that he was the hood. I also know people hate the Flash Forwards but I actually think they are building to a place where Oliver will end up in the future recruiting Mia and her team, since the Monitor told Felicity in the finale of season 7 "Believe me, the world will need her as well" NEXT EPISODE Link to Promo: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kfj3xucI8Xk (Date: 15 Oct 2019) Episode: “Welcome to Hong Kong” [Season 8 Episode 2] Air Date: Tuesday, October 22, 2019 Summary: Oliver, John, Laurel, and Tatsu seek out an important person within The Monitor's plan. Airing date: 07/17/2019 Deep fakes and the future for actors, Why you might want to delete Facebook. and About the new Apple MacBooks. --- Craig Hello again, everybody. Craig Peterson here. I've been thinking about maybe trying to send out a little survey. I don't know, would you guys respond to it? About what content you really would like to see in my security summer? I may end up doing that. Let me know if you think that'd be a good idea because I'm, I'm looking at what we put together, and it's six weeks, five episodes per week. And should we do that I'm looking out my window here. And there's a deer right outside my window eating the grass in the backyard. They've been eating our flowers, and they got into our tomato plants and ate them all. Right now she's just sitting there eating wagging her tail. The chickens are staring at her. Watching her out there. That is so cool. Anyhow, what topics do you want me to cover in this free security summer summit stuff? Please let me know, and I'll be glad to, to bring you up to date on that. Anyhow, this morning, I was on with our friends Ken and Matt. And we got into a couple more things here more about deep fakes. And what is going on? What's the future for actors? And are they going to put these deep fakes humans right out of business? And we talked a little bit more to about deleting Facebook, and I even came up with a couple more reasons to get rid of some of these things and stop using Google and stuff. I don't know. I don't think I'll ever completely stop. But anyway, here we go. Matt Gagnon It's that time yet again, ladies and gentlemen, Wednesday at 738 means it is time for a technology update from Craig Peterson tech guru extraordinaire, a friend of the show, and he joins us now Craig, how are you? Craig Peterson Hey, good morning doing well but I am not looking forward to these high temperatures Ken Altshuler From Oklahoma. That's the difference between you and me, Craig? Ken Altshuler Yeah. I was going to ask you about the MacBook Pros. Once again, I have to bring my computer into Apple to fix the T key that fell off. But rather than that, I want to talk about Steve Wozniak first, who, of course, one of the Apple founders, who is saying, and I'm shocked by this, he says, You should delete Facebook. I can't believe he suggests that. Craig Peterson Exactly. Well, you know, we've heard so many reasons to remove Facebook right to delete your account to destroy all of that information. And most of them have to do with privacy. And you know, it's a legitimate argument. But it also sucks. Matt Gagnon FaceTime, or what is it that you call my face? Face my face by my face? Yeah, my face, Ken Altshuler Face, my face, face, Craig Peterson Face to face. There you go, My space. One of the big reasons for this something that I'm sure Matt knows about it. We've had some fascinating revelations that came from Project Veritas. These are guys going to go and do these interviews with people and they tape them without anybody's knowledge, and then they report on it. Well, there is a huge deal going on right now when you are talking about Facebook and Google. And remember, Facebook isn't just Facebook anymore. Now they've got a bunch of different platforms that people are using to communicate. But the real big deal has to do with the manipulation that's going on. There's a new site up right now called Spinquark (https://news.spinquark.com/), you might want to check it out. And the first link there on their homepage takes you to a fascinating article. And what these guys did is they went online to LinkedIn. And they searched around LinkedIn for the senior people on YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook. Were talking about the upper-level managers, directors, etc. And what they found was in all of these companies, of the predominance of them were left-wing, I mean, really left-wing. They found 31 people who were senior people in the Obama campaign and administration, who were all senior managers of these social media companies. 25, associated directly with the Clinton administration, and the Clinton Foundation. 16, who came straight out of the DNC, the Democratic National Committee, and five who worked directly for Speaker Pelosi. When you're talking about people like this, who are involved in very high levels on everything from who should be censored, what should be censored, and what can be said. Then have some of these people coming out directly saying that we cannot allow a mistake like President Trump to occur again. We must do everything we can to stop it from happening again. The Los Angeles Times is even reporting on this right now. Although it came out a few months ago. There was a psychiatrist out there in San Diego, who had done a bunch of research, he looked at several people 47,000 searches that were done by undecided voters. And he looked at three specific newly elected democrat reps from 2018, Porter, Rouda and Levin. He looked at the searches that were done in their districts to try and figure out is there a tie? And if these conservative people had a point. His research found that based on their searches about 35,500 undecided voters or who were on the fence could be persuaded to vote for democrats. How? Entirely due to the "news" that they saw on their feeds from these social media and news sites. We've got to think when we're thinking about a Facebook account, or even at Google, where we're doing searches about things from poisonings search results, which can be kind of fun sometimes to do. So what will happen is someone's searching for something, then you can manipulate the search engine to give them a different result. And maybe it should carry through a Facebook. So for instance, when you first got your Facebook account, and you followed someone, you imitate the celebrity, you would get all of their posts and your feed. And then what Facebook did is they said, Hey, listen, you know this is a little much, we should probably give them information we think they might interest them. If someone mentions a birthday or Congratulations, those are more likely to show up in your Facebook feed, then anything else, frankly. If they are friends of yours and are sharing something more likely to show up in your feed. But now it's come out just this past week, that, in fact, for part of what they're doing is they are purposely manipulating your feed to sway you. Now, when we're talking about influencing you to remember how these guys make money, they make money through advertising, they make money by selling things. So if they have an advertiser that's selling something that you might not otherwise be interested in, show you that end. But it turns out that there may be a lot more manipulation going on, then we thought, and they might even be trying to get you to do into a whole new category of products. Or in this case, also the Los Angeles Times reported. And this is professor, author of algorithms of oppression, how search engines reinforce racism, how they are using their power, by being such big powerhouses in the social media search spaces, to manipulate undecided people. That's what this particular study was about, into voting for the Democrats. So fascinating stuff, you know, because you, you get information from every direction. And nowadays where we've got these photorealistic videos, where they're pasting people's faces, other people's faces on to other people's bodies, etc. And it's hard to tell, how can you know what's right or wrong? You have to listen to Ken, Matt, and Craig. Mm-hmm. Ken Altshuler All right, we're on with Craig Peterson the tech guru joins us periodically. Now let's talk about MacBook Pro. Shall we buy new ones or are they're not changing. The keys now are that you just you're never going to give up the key thing? I'm not, and it is unbelievably irritating to me. Yes. Craig Peterson They are. The latest rumors are they're going to whole new design. They're getting rid of the butterfly design entirely. After three iterations, I think it has been event butterfly keyboard design, that has been a disaster, they are going to be switching. And what it does mean is a slightly thicker computer. I think it's like a few millimeters thicker. Like who cares, right, two or three millimeters, it's going to be slightly thicker. To use different technology, they're not going to go back to the old Chiclets designs, which I kind of like, but they are going to change it. So can you can about time rest easy. Yeah, this is a rumor. You don't know this, the Chinese manufacturers that all of a sudden cancel. So other keyboard orders because they got a large order from some Unknown, Unknown manufacturer. It's all tied back to Apple. But they did do a couple of significant changes here recently in the Mac Book line just within the last two weeks. And those do not have these significant changes yet, so we should be seeing them come this fall. Matt Gagnon We're talking to Craig Peterson, our tech guru. He joins us at this time every Wednesday to go over the world of technology. Craig, I have to ask you about one of the more interesting stories here in your rundown about the future of acting because you see increasingly in a lot of movies. Actors do age to look sort of kind of like they used to 20 years ago you're seeing dead people come back into movies. Well, exactly. I mean, you got the new Star Wars movie coming out later this year the test her, and she's dead. And you had the guy from the very first Star Wars movie, who was put into the last the Rogue One Star Wars movie there. There are holograms of dead people like singing with people in Vegas. You know, there's just crazy stuff happening. I guess the question comes down to this. Will we even need actors anymore in the future or work everywhere? Can we can we can produce? It is, you know, fake or digitally created person to act for us and the future? Craig Peterson Do you remember the movie, Simone? Did you see that with Al Pacino? Matt Gagnon I did see that movie, believe it or not? Craig Peterson Yeah, it's spelled S-I-M-O-N-E. Exciting movie because it's taking this on head-on. And what happens in this movie, it just the basic I'm not going to give it away here even right on what writers in this movie. But it's an artificially created actress. And you have someone who is still voicing that who's always talking who's again doing the acting. That's our next step. You even will have an actor like the terrible job they did with Carrie Fisher phase in Rogue One was awful. Matt Gagnon Targeting grandma off-target was not that great either. That way. There's that uncanny valley thing where it's like, and you could tell Something's Weird About It. You know, even though it sort of looks real. It looks a little rubbery or something. Something's messed up with it. Like they're not quite there yet. They're closed, but they're not Ken Altshuler All the way scar. Craig Peterson Yeah, it'll be about five to 10 years. And here's why it's going to take a little while. Our brains are excellent at being able to tell the difference between phasers, and you know, you think about it, and how can we tell you two apart? You guys look identical? No, we do. Ken Altshuler We like twins. Craig Peterson It's like twins, and it's like five years different. You know, you could argue it. So how can we tell people apart? Well, because our brains have become very, very good at recognizing faces and, and flaws. So anything that shows even a little wrong, you look at like if you look at somebody get plastic surgery, most of the time, you can say oh my god, they need to see a new person plastic surgeon is you can tell. So it's going to be a while yet before we get to this. We've got the further live interaction with Dumbo. And with the Lion King, that's coming out with some animation. CGI, this computer-generated stuff is excellent. When there's not a human face a real human face involved. Stylized, it's very acceptable. For instance, a leader I don't know if you saw that latest movie, where again, it's computer-generated, but it looks computer-generated. Yeah, they made the eyes big and stuff to say, yeah, yeah. So that you don't catch it. How long man, it's not going to be very long, frankly, we're going to be able to with within five years, we'll see this being relatively commonplace. And within ten years, only the best the biggest blockbusters are going to have real people, you know, in every role in there. Because there are some things that humans can't do, even if they have a stunt double. And you will be able to do with science fiction and stuff with some of these fake actors here. Frankly, I think it's kind of cool. I think it's kind of scary. You know, I think we've talked before a little bit about the risks to our security. When it comes to this. We've already got new emails coming in telling the CFO to send money to some vendor that isn't a real vendor, and they're trying to scam us right with phishing attacks. Artificial Intelligence is going to get more involved with this. That's going to improve it dramatically. That's why I say in five to 10 years. I think most actors and actresses are not going to be able to have a job doing that anymore. Voice actors probably sell for a while, but even that's going to go away. Matt Gagnon Well, considering the Emmy nominations and probably wouldn't be any significant loss anyway. Craig Peterson Tech guru joins us every Wednesday. 738. Thank you, Craig. We'll talk to you next week. Craig Peterson Hey, gentlemen, take care. Bye-bye. Ken Altshuler Alright, so we're going to go to a quick break here. When we come back. Craig Peterson If you do have suggestions on topics you want me to cover in this security summer, email me at Craig Peterson dot com. That's me at Craig Peterson dot com. All right, everybody. In 2006, a fast and furious little film popped on the big screen starring Paul Walker. No, it wasn't of the franchise touting that phrase, it was a colorfully explosive little film called Running Scared. The trailer didn't really do anything for me, but it did inform the audience that the first six minutes of the film was available to watch online. After watching those first six minutes, I was hooked. I watched it multiple times a night for weeks leading up to the theatrical release. I had never seen anything like it and I was so excited for where they went from there. I was NOT disappointed. Jarrod, on the other hand, could barely stomach the entire thing.

There’s currently an invisible, supernatural pandemic affecting the world, or so claims HBM host Jeff Emtman. What else could explain the wide-ranging malaise of our current times? He thinks that the most logical conclusion is that astral energy vampires are draining humans of their lifeforce en masse. Jeff’s never encountered one of these beasts, but that’s probably because he’s developed an elaborate spell to trap them in an alternate timeline. In this video episode of Here Be Monsters, Jeff shares his special spell of repulsion.Content Note: Stylized blood and flashing imagesIngredients: An empty parking garageA pair of shoesLoads of old personal and family videosA tactile transducer Blood (any kind)A bathtubA strong knowledge of how to not get electrocutedA note from Jeff on the creation of this episode:I spent my teenage years listening to Coast To Coast AM each night from 10PM until I fell asleep. It’s a 4 hour nightly show about the supernatural that exists in a world of increased potential for the unusual. Guests, callers and hosts are so densely packed with stories of the strange that eventually what used to seem ludicrous becomes possible, and what used to seem possible seems likely. Like many, I was deeply saddened to hear of Art Bell’s recent death. Bell was the original host of Coast To Coast. While I grew up in the George Noory era, Bell would still host most weekends. But on further reflection of my years dedicated to this program, I came away conflicted. It is truly an amazing feeling to have one’s world blown open on a nightly basis by some new ‘truth’ revealed, it’s also a format that often peddles in fear of the unknown. It’s a fear that I internalized, hard. Now nearing 30, I’ve likely cumulative years of my life in fear of evils that don’t actually exist. And of the evils that do exist, I fall into nearly every demographic group that statistically protects me from them. If I were a sociologist, I’d study whether there’s inverse correlation between the amount of generalized fear a person feels and how much danger that they actually live in. I have a hypothesis about misplaced fears and their relationship to the supernatural, but I am no sociologist. So in this episode, I take a fanciful view on the enemies of the astral plane. The astral plane is a favorite location of Coast To Coast, probably because its inherent indefinability means that just about anything goes. But with that being said, please don’t bathe in blood, or electrocute yourself.Producer: Jeff EmtmanEditor: Bethany DentonMusic: The Black Spot, Serocell, The Other StarsThis episode features illustrations by Fortunio Liceti from the 17th century. Fortunio did not believe his subjects to be hideous, as he considered deformity to be the intersection of nature and art.

Generalized trends in real world observations can be boiled down to what are sometimes called "stylized facts," empirical regularities in search of theoretical and causal explanations. Simple statements like "democracies rarely go to war with each other" or "the share of income going to the top 1% has increased" enter into public discourse and eventually shape public policy. The process by which stylized facts go from raw observations to academic discourse to the public eye can be messy but incredibly influential on policy. Discourse regarding income inequality in the United States has specifically been shaped by the stylized facts that came out of available data during different periods. Dan Hirschman of Brown University discusses this process and its effects on public policy.
*We apologies for the audio issues* In this episode we discuss album covers in hip hop. We cover the time period between now and the early 90’s. We discuss common trends like Bling, Baby’s, Squads, Artsy, Stylized, and Minimal. Some of of the covers we discuss are Juveniles 400 Degreez, Nas Illmatic, The Roots multiple squad covers and Kanye’s albums. We talk about the vast differences in the thought and care put into the Graduation cover vs. Life of Pablo. When talking on the different covers we pick out some of our favorites like Biggies Ready to Die, A Tribe Called Quest’s Low End Theory. We spend some talking about the use of stock images on album covers and contrast that with the use of commissioned artwork like Logic’s Everybody. We also talk about controversial album covers like Ice T’s Power and Nicki Minaj’s Anaconda and the if they were actually good beyond the shock factor. We also spend time talking about if album covers still matter in the streaming age. We conclude the Run the Jewels has one of if not the most effective branding strategies in hip hop. Episode #13Aired: 11/29/2005We may walk roads of darkness as well as light, but we spend most of our time drifting in shadow. Crazy Dog Audio Theatre has a proven track record of high-end sonic soundscapes, and this week on the Society we are pleased to present one of our favourites, "Gerry in the Dark Passage." The Dark Passage in this story is a video game, but it could easily be many other escapes that modern life affords. As we sit in our consumer-driven lifestyles most of our relationships are moderated around products. Stylized video games and songs, downloadable movies, and "cool" political rants- but do they really change the world, or even the way we think? Has humanity become as disposable as the products we've come to rely on? One thing is certain, each week we present audio gems that are from a rejuvinating art form, and here in the Society we love to create. Stand by in the intermission as we talk about the Consortium Comics project here in the Society, and later an interview with Roger Gregg from Crazy Dog. Our action packed meeting ends with one of the last episodes of our continual serial "Robots of the Company" by Dream Realm Enterprises... listen in to recognise a familiar voice or two.Crazy Dog Audio TheatreConsortium ComicsPromo: The SignalDream Realm Enterprises
Wage formation is often analyzed by assuming that wage differentials reflect productivity differentials intrinsic to the workers, like differences in skill or qualification. Observed industry and firm effects on wages suggests, however, that wage differentials may result from causes rather unrelated to intrinsic productivity. This paper considers the polar case of homogeneous labor. The wage differentials emerging here are, thus, unrelated to individual differences. The model used is of an economy with a segmented labor market in which the primary sector industries are characterized by high turnover costs. This induces firms to pay efficiency wages reflecting turnover costs. The turnover case offers some rather surprising yet straightforward conclusions regarding efficiency, discrimination and taxation: Workers capture job rents; wage dispersion is too high; considerable wage differentials may arise from infinitesimally small differences in productivity; and a progressive wage tax will be welfare-enhancing.
