We couldn't have imagined a more random episode to leave you with before spring break, but hopefully there's a little something for everyone here at Breakfast All Day. We begin with "The Friend," a warm and wise drama about grief, healing, and a 150-pound Great Dane. We don't totally agree on how well this movie works, but the dog is amazing. Starring Naomi Watts, Bill Murray, Carla Gugino and Ann Dowd. In theaters. Next up is the four-part anthology "Freaky Tales," from "Captain Marvel" filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, returning to their indie roots. Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Dominique Thorne and Too $hort are among the stars of this intertwined homage to 1987 Oakland. In theaters. Finally, we catch up with "Holland," but you're welcome to avoid it. Nicole Kidman, Matthew Macfadyen and Gael García Bernal star in this overly familiar dark comedy about secrets lurking beneath the pristine veneer of small-town America. Streaming on Prime Video. No news this week because Christy's on vacation. But if you're a member of our Patreon, keep an eye out for our recap of "The White Lotus" season finale on Monday morning. Thanks for being here! So the Halloween Boutique Psychotronic Reviews podcast decided to do an episode on the 2009 movie WATCHMEN but our discussion went a bit long as we discussed the background to the movie, and its source material. So we decided to break it into two episodes. The second is all about the movie itself.Directed by Zack Snyder, written by David Hayter and Alex Tse, and starring Malin Akerman, Billy Crudup, Matthew Good, Jackie Earle Haley, Patrick Wilson, Carla Gugino, and Jeffrey Dean Morgan, was not the success that the studio had hoped. With the usual debate between the fans of the graphic novel and superheroes in general, backlash and praise were both the norm. Now fifteen years later, the movie has become somewhat of a cult classic. With its fabulous special effects, splendid acting, and changes to the story to make it fit within a movie length, the film, though polarizing, continues to find audiences through streaming. Your cohosts take a look at the film itself and give their thoughts.
Degens Andy S and Brandon Bombay just got back from seeing the girls of Old Town before sitting down to discuss 'Sin City.' Bombay starts off the episode with one of his dirtiest stories yet, as he tells about the time he had a rendezvous with a married woman at a bar, and then keeping with the episodic nature of the movie, Andy makes it a two-for-one story episode by talking about his own wild run-in at a bar with a very upset cop. Then the fellas look at a visually stunning hard boiled genre masterclass. A movie that is one of the most faithful comic book adaptations ever committed to celluloid, and has us yearning for the days when studios assembled powerhouse casts for hard R-rated fare. Besides the wonderful turns from main characters played by Bruce Willis, Clive Owen, and a pre-'The Wrestler' Mickey Rourke, this film is bolstered by committed small roles from acting genre legends such as Powers Booth, and Rutger Hauer. The cherry on top of this visual feast are the tough as nails female characters played by Rosario Dawson, Jessica Alba, Brittany Murphy, and the ever-underrated Carla Gugino. This is an episode that's worth dying for, worth killing for, and worth going to hell for.
As we move into November, we take a look at our first Thanksgiving movie, Son In Law starring Pauly Shore. For this episode, Dave, Kurt and Rob will travel to South Dakota and watch this Fish-out-of-water comedy down on a farm. Shore looks to help out his college friend, Carla Gugino as she visits her parents during the Thanksgiving break from school by creating a distraction for her boyfriend Travis. From farming to square dancing, fishing and Playboy's, Shore will find out how different, and similar life can be in middle America. With plenty of early 90's style, the film offers an amusing take on culture shock and family acceptance, all in classic Pauly Shore fashion buddies!!! Today we do things a little different and discuss a show! The 2018 Netflix smash hit "The Haunting of Hill House" With Special Guest ANDREW GARCIA!! The Haunting of Hill House is an American supernatural horror drama television miniseries created and directed by Mike Flanagan, produced by Amblin Television and Paramount Television for Netflix, and serves as the first entry in The Haunting anthology series. It is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name by Shirley Jackson. The plot alternates between two timelines, following five adult siblings whose paranormal experiences at Hill House continue to haunt them in the present day, and flashbacks depicting events leading up to the eventful night in 1992 when the family fled from the mansion. The ensemble cast features Michiel Huisman, Elizabeth Reaser, Oliver Jackson-Cohen, Kate Siegel, and Victoria Pedretti as the siblings in adulthood, with Carla Gugino and Henry Thomas as parents Olivia and Hugh Crain, and Timothy Hutton appearing as an older version of Hugh. Sorry about the Audio- Beef and Rum Daddy had issues :/ Following the release of The Matrix in 1999, Hollywood saw an explosion of martial arts-focused action movies. Riding that wave was Chinese actor Jet Li, who made his first American-made film debut in Lethal Weapon 4 and went on to star in Kiss of the Dragon, Romeo Must Die and this dimension-hopping cop movie. Starring as both the hero and villain - the last two variants who have absorbed the energy from their murdered counterparts - Li faces off against himself with Jason Statham, Delroy Lindo, and Carla Gugino rounding out the cast. The film also tapped into a modern rock sound with Disturbed, Drowning Pool, Godsmack, and Papa Roach. Directed by James Wong and co-written by Wong with Glen Morgan, the film was neither a box office nor critical hit. While it may be the best of the Matrix variants in this universe, in the end there can be only The One! Melissa Benoist stepped into the Hollywood spotlight in a big way via Glee. Then she cemented herself as a bonafide star and headliner with Supergirl. Now she continues to broaden her range and her industry skill set by starring in and producing the hugely entertaining political drama, The Girls on the Bus.Created by Amy Chozick and Julie Plec, The Girls on the Bus is inspired by Chozick's memoir, Chasing Hillary. It follows four female journalists played by Benoist, Carla Gugino, Christina Elmore and Natasha Behnam, who are on the campaign trail with aspiring presidential candidates. They all have vastly different backgrounds and goals, but find themselves supporting one another as they navigate career pressures, personal challenges, and frustrations with flawed presidential hopefuls. As Collider's Taylor Gates noted in her review, “[Girls on the Bus] handles serious topics, from sexism and racism to abortion and corruption, in a way that feels both raw and palatable while never taking away from the show's watchability and enjoyability,” and I must agree. Powered by its perfectly assembled core four and their infectious charm, Girls on the Bus quickly earned my investment and heart. Given that, it'll probably come as no surprise that the show's cancellation was a massive disappointment. However, that's not stopping Benoist from celebrating what she and the team achieved.Benoist took the time to join me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation to recap her road to Girls on the Bus, to discuss her collaboration with her three top-tier co-stars, and to explain why the show's cancellation will have zero impact on how she looks back on the experience of making it and the final product she and the team produced. We have a special Escape Pod episode for you all...it also happens to be our 250th episode!!! Quinn, geek-dad Brien's daughter, really wanted to get behind the mic and talk all about her new, favorite movie, Lisa Frankenstein! It's the story of a misunderstood teenager (Kathryn Newton) and a reanimated corpse (Cole Sprouse) as they embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness and a few missing body parts! Written by Diablo Cody and directed by Robin Williams' daughter, Zelda Williams, it's an entertaining horror rom-com with a silly sense of humor and heavy '80s vibes!
Carla Gugino? Ted Wheeler? Cole Sprouse? Mary Shelley? A PINK house? How could I NOT cover this on the podcast? Okay Cole Sprouse could have the best chemistry with a lamp... thankfully in this movie we have Kathryn Newton who I haven't seen before this movie but I LOVE her... this cast is top notch... this movie is so FUN and colorful and a pink house with a teal door... it's like it was made for me specifically because literally that's what colors my house is too... "yea... yea... she's a bitch" possibly best line I laughed a lot but I also cried... I don't care what critics say about this movie... also I want a Victorian man as a bf (mainly Charles Dickens) this movie is so cute, the romance is sweet and real and adorable, Cole is adorable... I love this mix of Edward Scissorhands meets Heathers meets all the best color schemes and fashions... it's all the things I love and this movie is not for the filmbros it's for the tumblr girlies so if you're not down for that... what is wrong with you? lol --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/raine-l/support

Critics are split on this new movie from Zelda Williams and Diablo Cody, but We're nearly unanimous, Lisa Frankenstein is a good time and you should go see it in theaters. Synopsis Set in the late 80's, Lisa is the weird new girl in school dealing with the grief of her mothers death and life in a new family with a wicked stepmother and kind of nice yet condescending stepsister. She spends her free hours talking to herself and pining for love in a Bachelor's cemetery, which is totally a thing. She has the hots for the editor of the school newspaper, and while chatting with him at a party, she drinks a spiked drink and goes into a psychedelic trip during a thunderstorm. Using 80's logic, the lightning resurrects Lisa's favorite grave resident unbeknownst to her. From there, it's that age old tale of the goth girl that keeps a reanimated corpse in the friendzone while they murder people for parts. Review of Lisa Frankenstein Lisa Frankenstein is a mess, but it's a fun mess. As of recording, it sits at a solid 50% critics score on Rotten Tomatoes, and I'm honestly not surprised. I predict this one will be divisive, but could ultimately become a cult classic from it's bizarre campy charm. The premise feels straight from the early filmography of Tim Burton, but unlike Burton, the freshman director Zelda Williams struggles with keeping a consistent style and tone throughout the film. Her background is in music videos, and it really shows in some of the narrative style of the movie, which relies heavily on visual shorthand more than hard earned character development and cause and effect. The script written by Diablo Cody of Juno and Jennifer's Body fame is the highlight of the film. It taps into a level of snarky and campy humor rarely seen outside of 80's teen romcoms. Like her other scripts, this one features sharp dialogue and amusing non-sequiters from supporting characters that makes the world fun to watch. The acting is great. Kathrine Newton who plays Lisa shifts from weird nerd to self assured goth murderess with aplomb. Cole Sprouse does great with comedic timing as the mute creature. Liza Soberano walks the line between condescension and likability really well as the step sister. Carla Gugino was the best at bringing the appropriate amount of camp to the stepmother. The main flaws in the movie are the disjointed tone and the arbitrariness of the plot. It would have been nicer to have more effort put into the setups for the major plot shifts and character changes. Without properly establishing cause and effect, the movie can feel confusing. But here's the thing. With all the nitpicks I could pick at, I was smiling and chuckling throughout the whole movie. I thought it was a blast, and I give it a lot of points for originality. Score 8/10

For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Dan Bayer & guest Leia Mendoza. Today, we are reviewing the feature directorial debut of Zelda Williams with "Lisa Frankenstein" starring Kathryn Newton, Cole Sprouse, Liza Soberano, Henry Eikenberry, Joe Chrest & Carla Gugino. Written by Academy Award-winner Diablo Cody, the teenage romantic-gothic comedy is a homage to the 80s and mixes horror with romantic comedy. After receiving polarizing reactions, it has us wondering if it will go on to achieve cult-like status as "Jennifer's Body" did back in 2009. What did we think of it? Tune in as we discuss the direction, writing, tone, performances, and more in our SPOILER-FILLED review. Thank you, and enjoy! Check out more on NextBestPicture.com Please subscribe on... Carla Gugino has been quietly amassing one of the most diverse bodies of work in Hollywood, and it's about time that's recognized. She's got a disaster movie in San Andreas, loads of family-friendly adventure films including Race to Witch Mountain, Night at the Museum, and the Spy Kids movies, and she's currently soaring in the horror space with projects like Gerald's Game and The Haunting of Hill House. We'd be here all day if I listed everything, but do give her lengthy filmography a quick scan. I'd be willing to bet that in almost all cases, consecutive projects fall in different genres.Just recently, Gugino got the opportunity to show off a good deal of her seemingly limitless range in a single project, The Fall of the House of Usher. The stellar new Netflix series from Mike Flanagan and the “Flanafamily” focuses on Roderick and Madeline Usher, the extremely wealthy and powerful brother-sister duo pushing Fortunato Pharmaceuticals up and up while leaving a trail of dark secrets in their wake. They think they are untouchable, but when their heirs start dying one by one, they're forced to revisit past choices and reckon with Gugino's character, Verna, or rather, “The Raven.”While Verna is often seen in human form, she's not. As Gugino has explained in the past, “She's not the devil. She's not even evil.” She added, “You could say she's the executor of fate or the executor of karma.” Just before their death, each Usher sees a manifestation of Verna, and each version is different. It's a one-of-a-kind challenge and Gugino absolutely soars while tackling it, so much so that she was just honored with a Critics Choice Nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series. In honor of that accolade, the success of The Fall of the House of Usher, and everything Gugino's accomplished in film and television thus far, she joined me for a Collider Ladies Night conversation and offered up a closer look at how she did what many strive to do in Hollywood — avoid being “boxed in” and build a career with a wealth of unique creative opportunities. Carla Gugino is a national treasure, having made numerous appearances in stuff like Brian DePalma's Snake Eyes, Sin City, Watchmen, The Haunting of Hill House, and, of course, one of the best Stephen King adaptations ever made: Gerald's Game.
