Ships are getting older and safety is suffering

The global shipping fleet is getting older, but it is also getting more dangerous. As freight rates surged in a tonne-miles driven market, many shipowners delayed scrapping older vessels, which put seafarers, cargo and the environment at greater risk. The industry must now act decisively to improve safety standards amid an ageing fleet, argues the class society DNV who have used Lloyd's List Intelligence casualty data to analyse the trends. Lloyd's List editor-in-chief Richard Meade sat down with Knut Ørbeck-Nilssen, CEO of DNV Maritime, on the sidelines of the Nor-Shipping event being held in Oslo this week to discuss what this means and what can be done about it

The race for industry recognition is on at Nor-Shipping 2025, with today's launch of the prestigious Next Generation Ship and Ocean Solutions Awards. Nor-Shipping 2025 plans to gather industry leaders from across the globe to debate methods, share knowledge, showcase innovation, and build the necessary relationships to navigate toward a future of sustainable success. The accolades support the exhibition and event week's main theme of #future-proof, as leading global innovators compete against one another to showcase truly defining projects and solutions. Both awards, which hold extra significance coming in Nor-Shipping's 60th anniversary year, will be judged by expert panels, with Remi Erikson, Group President and CEO, DNV, leading deliberations for the Next Generation Ship jury, and Kjerstin Braathen, Group CEO, DNB, taking charge for the Ocean Solutions Award. The Ocean Solutions Award focuses on trailblazing ideas, products, and concepts conceived to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the maritime and ocean industries. The Next Generation Ship Award assesses breakthrough newbuild, retrofit and conversion projects, with all ship types given equal consideration, regardless of size or segment. 'Your time to shine' The Next Generation Ship Award winner will be revealed at the Nor-Shipping Opening Ceremony at Oslo City Hall in Norway on 2 June, while the Ocean Solutions Award will be handed out at Nor-Shipping's Ocean Leadership Conference the following day. "All eyes will be on Norway next June and, as ever, our winners will have a unique opportunity to showcase their ambition, dedication and innovation to a global audience of key decision-makers," said Sidsel Norvik, Director of Nor-Shipping. "As befits our anniversary, next time promises to be our biggest and best Nor-Shipping yet, so I think that elevates attention levels to a new high. Ambitious businesses take note… this is your time to shine, demonstrating how your projects and solutions are capable of helping steer our industry towards bright, prosperous and sustainable horizons. We wish everyone the very best of luck." Addressing challenges, identifying opportunities The Next Generation Ship Award assesses breakthrough newbuild, retrofit and conversion projects, with all ship types given equal consideration, regardless of size or segment. Entrants will have to impress an international jury across key criteria of energy efficiency, innovation, suitability and flexibility, technology utilisation, safety and security, and environmental sustainability. The lucky winner will join past title holders including Terntank, 2023's winner for its 15,000dwt Hybrid Tanker newbuild series, and Havila Voyages, which secured the 2022 accolade for coastal cruise ferry Havila Capella. The Ocean Solutions Award, meanwhile, shifts the focus to trailblazing ideas, products, and concepts conceived to address some of the most pressing challenges facing the maritime and ocean industries. Entrants, who should be participants at Nor-Shipping 2025, must prove their solutions are either currently available or near commercialisation to ensure industry impact. AlfaWall Oceanbird won in 2023 for its folding wing sail system, with the first retrofit due to take place early next year onboard Wallenius Wilhelmsen's vessel Tirranna. Agenda setting "Nor-Shipping has always worked to provide a platform for the ideas and organisations which help to set the ocean business agenda, and our awards are an integral part of that mission," notes Norvik. "We want to showcase how the most innovative approaches can turn challenges into opportunities, recognising and rewarding the players pushing boundaries to deliver unique commercial and environmental benefits. It'll be exciting to see who is competing to #future-proof our industry, and scoop these coveted awards, in 2025." Nor-Shipping takes place at venues across Oslo and Lillestrøm 2-6 June 2025. Alongside the awards and main exhibition, a diver...

It is day three of Norshipping out in Oslo and the Lloyd's List team are finally penetrating the pre-prepared headline pushes and have started to find a more nuanced debate about the real progress being made in shipping amongst the front runners, the followers and the laggards. Today's chat is with Cargill's head of ocean transportation and the president of the Global Maritime Forum, Jan Dieleman. xx THE Lloyd's List team out n Nor-Shipping have been getting a bit heat this week for calling out the gap between the industry's front runners who are pushing a progressive agenda and their followers and then the laggards. The good the bad and the ugly if you will. But as we touched on in yesterday's edition of this daily podcast live from Norshipping, that's quite a reductive view of what is realistically not a linear shift across a single industry, but a messy and difficult series of transitions across a supply chain that is still very fragmented. So, in search of a more balanced view from the frontrunners Lloyd's List editor Richard Meade hopped on an e-scooter to visit podcast regular Jan Dieleman. Most listeners will know Jan from previous editions, but for those who are not familiar he is the head of the shipping division at commodities giant Cargill. He is also the chairman of the Global Maritime Forum – the non-profit aimed at bringing voices from across the industry to chart a sustainable future. He is therefore well versed in both what the best of the industry are not just capable of and all too familiar with the gaps between the rhetoric on show and the reality of chartering decisions in an industry that needs to closely monitor the bottom line. Jan talks about why the industry can't move in unison and why we do need regulation to close the gap between the front runner and the laggards. He also discusses collaboration and the need for a more holistic conversation across sectors and government. And we even talked a little about carbon capture. But the conversations starts by tackling what Jan sees as the elephant in the room – the fact that shipping may not be able to get what it wants when it come to a sustainable future of fuels, because shipping may not be the most important industry out there.

Nu blir det shownotes på engelska: Early June, Lena went to NOR Shipping, which is a large fair in the maritime industry held every other year in Lillestrom, just outside Oslo. There she met a friend of hers, Ally Cedeno, Founder and Owner of Women Offshore, which is an online network for women in the offshore industry, and they sat down and had a chat about how Ally does her podcasts. The podcast can be found on the www.womenoffshore.org website and on all podcast platforms.  Since this meeting started out by Ally interviewing Lena for the Women Offshore Podcast, she recorded this interview as well. As you can hear in the interview, she uses a Blue Yeti microphone and she records straight into her Mac.  P-O has edited the files in Hindenburg:  Voice profiler (generic) Noise reduction exported in -14 LUFS What do you think? She is a force to be reckoned with and she has a very special talent for making visions into something tangible. Sofia is the brain behind the concept of the Opening Oceans Conference.  I seized the opportunity to discuss some topics that have been weighing on my mind for a while, and maybe I was too hard on her, but I think we agreed on some things when it comes to the visibility of the shipping industry.  Thank you to Sofia and thank you for listening. Listen to Paul speaking about how the Young Ocean Professional network works, through referrals and introductions and how this network is growing. More than 35,000 volunteers are collaborating to reach the SDG:s and now WOC is also focussing on female leadership, working together with Women's International Shipping & Trading Association, WISTA, amongst others. Invited by the Opening Oceans Conference, a new initiative by NOR-Shipping to help realize the potential of the ocean space, I met Nir Gartzman, from theDOCK innovation hub, who was invited to participate in the Nordic ThinkTank session. Nir has an interesting background, he is a Chief Engineer and an Israeli navy officer who has spent the last 10 years in the high-tech & the clean-tech sector in Israel when his passion for the maritime industry made him focus on the digital arena and co-found an innovation hub. TheDock gathers innovators, investors and corporate partners on the same platform, which has been set up after having met with 20+ other innovation hubs for other sectors in Israel, they can now say that this is the best practice for how to do it.  Nir states that the coming 5 years will be very interesting for ships, operations, and ports. He can see the maritime sector follow the same paths as automotive & fin-tech has done and it's time to catch the opportunity to leverage the worldwide global connections that the maritime industry is so good at and make it into an advantage for a more transparent, accessible service to the customers.
