Coming-of-age tales and the extraordinary story of the Irish merchant ship the MV Kerlogue, and Seamus Heaney on the byroads of County Wexford, with Elizabeth Oxley, Fran O'Rourke, Kevin Mc Dermott, AM Cousins, Jennifer Carey and Rachael Hegarty

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"This is the sound of three teams on rigid-hull inflatable boats rescuing around 130 people from an overloaded rubber boat in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, around 2 in the morning on the 27th of December, 2022.  "The rescuees, almost all of whom were from West Africa, were attempting to reach Europe from Libya - where they had suffered extensive abuse. Among them were many children, and one infant just weeks old. The crew of the charity rescue ship the Ocean Viking located, intercepted and then met the rubber boat, giving the survivors life jackets and slowly bringing them back to the main ship.  "The survivors were eventually disembarked in Northern Italy, where they entered the Italian asylum system." In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Matthew Fader. Matthew, originally from the United States, has lived in Sweden for the second half of his life.  Our conversation jumps right into his first rescue and why he has been in search and rescue the majority of his life. At 19 years old, he helped an unconscious surfer with a head laceration, by providing CPR to him on the beach.  After a helicopter came to extract the victim, and from that day forward, he knew what he wanted to do!  He made a move to Sweden with his now wife and has made his life there. While living in Sweden, Matthew wanted to continue working in the field of rescue. He found the Swedish Sea Rescue Society (SSRS) and has been with them ever since. He tells us all sorts of stories from his time with SSRS. One of these stories includes a time when he and the SSRS deployed to Greece to help with the influx of refugees trying to cross the Mediterranean. In this episode of The Real ResQ, we are joined by Jarrod Garber from South Africa, working with the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI).  As he was called into the principal's office (for his kids), he saw the quarterly magazine for NSRI.  Immediately he knew that's what he wanted to do.  We talk about his very first rescue, where he was at the base ready to go before the call out was made.  A yacht in distress had lost its motor and tattered sails, making it dead in the water.  He and his crew took the yacht in tow and saved the boat and the crew. Jarrod tells of his second rescue which literally happened the day after his first rescue. This was a different yacht that was taking on water and sinking. The crew of the yacht had been picked up by a passing freighter ship. Jarrod and his crew were called out to bring them and their dog back home. We sidetracked into a rescue that happened the day before our recording. This case was a person on the shore rocks who had broken his leg and was unable to get out of his precarious location without help. We then talk about a rescue of a sailing vessel that had lost its rudder 150 km offshore. The vessel was able to get about 30 km from shore where Jarrod and his crew were able to get out to assist them. Another rescue we get to hear the details about was based on an article that was written in the NSRI Sea Rescue Magazine, Autumn 2021, titled A Group Effort To Save a Family. The last rescue we talk about earned the entire station the ‘Meritorious Service Award' for the efforts involved in one of the deadliest natural disasters in South Africa in the 21st century, and the deadliest storm since the 1987 floods. With all of his years in rescue, as you can imagine, he has loads of stories.  Graeme highlights a few of his favorites that have stuck with him throughout his career.  One of the stories included an adult and a group of kids who were swept out to sea, holding onto nothing but a single boogie board.  Another rescue was that of ten men on a sinking ship. Just as they arrived on scene, they watched the vessel sink in front of them. The last one we talk about was of a wife who reported that her husband was overdue from a fishing trip. He had gone out fishing to “bring home dinner” and when he didn't show up, the search was on. He also gives us a flavour of what life was like using launches to rescue airmen who came down in the sea. Gp. Capt. R. L. On his final mission, the Iuventa came to port and was immediately seized by Italian authorities who falsely claimed he and his shipmates had participated in aiding human trafficking, among other unfounded charges. You've met many people over the years who were rescued at sea. But what about the people who rescued them? Who are they, and what was their role in this arc of migration history? Today we take a departure from our usual interviews with people in the migrant community to meet one of those rescuers, Francesco Tripoli. Francesco worked aboard the Sea Watch 2 ship in 2017-2018 on five different missions. Hear his testimony about what it was like, and the gratitude he has for the people who were onboard with him. With a special guest appearance from his rooster crowing on his farm in Portugal, where he spoke to Open Encounters in late February 2021 in New York City.

Walking Ibiza celebrated turning Ten Years old at the weekend with ten walks over two days on the island. Each day ended with a celebratory Birthday lunch at Can Cires in Sant Mateu accompanied by some wonderful live acoustic music from Nell Shakespeare and some speeches and old favourite Ibiza faces dropping by.  There was singing in the Caves of Tannit, swimming, dancing and a few cheeky drinks to mark the occasion and founder Toby Clarke was joined on his Cala San Vincente walk on Day two for a little walk and talk for todays show with Jo Youle. The pair also caught up over some much needed beers on the first day, after Walking Ibiza was forced to call the Sea Rescue due to one guest becoming unwell on the adventure at Bills Paradise.  Plenty of action and so many highlights & memories on this celebratory edition of the podcast.  We hope you enjoy and will join us for the very first of our ten Around The Island bite size walks this weekend - as we split the 240kms circumference into ten parts so you can join us in the Xmas run up and finish 2020 with a much needed bang! The number of migrants making the sea crossing from North Africa to southern Europe has fallen dramatically in the last two years; tragically, the number of deaths hasn’t declined as fast. Humanitarian activists blame the anti-migration policies of EU member states. Stephen Sackur speaks to Carola Rackete, who defied the Italian authorities to land the rescue-ship Sea Watch 3 in Sicily with 50 migrants on board. To some, she’s a humanitarian hero; but will her actions merely encourage more people smuggling and more suffering? Image: Carola Rackete (Credit: Guglielmo Mangiapane/Reuters)

Etheridge, a former Union soldier and slave who was born on the Outer Banks, was awarded head keeper of the Pea island Life Saving Station, the only all-black life saving facility in the country, and unlike many of  his white counterparts,, his crew was overlooked when medals were given to surfmen who had acted courageously to save lives. Etheridge;s crew's saving of the 9 passengers aboard the storm-tossed E.S. Newman during hurricane conditions was submitted for review recently and the well earned awards were given posthumously. Methods used to save lives are discussed in this story, which you should find interesting. Rolf also gives the background to the "Yellow Boats" (gula båtarna) an initiative by the media house Schibsted to assist refugees in need for sea rescue in the Mediterranean Sea, which until Christmas has saved more than 600 lives.  Rolf is retiring soon, he has got a perspective on the shipping industry since the 60's and he thinks that it's his job to make sure that each and every politician realises that we always cross water, when we leave our countries or our continents.
