This episode features a conversation with Izzy Howden, Senior Campaign Manager at Make My Money Matter, an organization working to transform the financial system. It was recorded in August 2024.Over the past 3 years, Izzy has worked across all of Make My Money Matter's public campaign activity, including the viral films, The Hidden Relationship, featuring Kit Harington and Rose Leslie, and Oblivian, featuring Olivia Coleman, which have racked up hundreds of millions of views, generated massive media coverage, and picked up a slew of awards. She's also directly engaged the financial sector to drive climate action, following Make My Money Matter's mission to move money from the destructive, harmful investments of the past, into those that help build a future we can be proud of.Before joining Make My Money Matter, Izzy developed strategic, creative campaigns for clients such as the Global Project for Education, the World Economic Forum, Peace One Day, and Footprint Coalition. Amongst other things, Izzy and I discussed the task of making pensions and climate finance engaging for audiences, how working with celebrities can take things to the next level, and how embracing creativity, humour, and satire can give campaigns an edge.Additional links: Visit the Make My Money Matter websiteWatch Oblivian with Olivia ColemanWatch The Hidden Relationship with Kit Harington and Rose LeslieWatch the “Saving Jane” deforestation animation

It's tough enough to get Americans to realize that if Donald Trump wins in November, it would most likely mean the end of representative democracy in the United States. Even tougher, however, is to make Americans aware that even if Trump doesn't win, many authoritarian policy changes are already being rolled out in states like Texas and Alabama. So says Heidi Beirich, an expert on far-right movements in the United States and Europe. Leading the charge, Beirich says, is the Heritage Foundation, a longtime conservative think tank that has steered to the extreme right in recent years. In April 2022, the foundation and a coalition of think tanks and organizations released a 900-plus page blueprint, called Project 2025, for radically restructuring the U.S. government by integrating it with Christian nationalism. Beirich, cofounder of the Global Project against Hate and Extremism, discusses Project 2025 and the Far Right's efforts to convert the United States into an authoritarian, Christian nationalist country. Beirich also discusses how the antidemocratic movement in the United States mirrors other movements globally, which are on the rise and target immigrants, people of color, women, and LGBTQ communities. “We are very close to losing our system of government,” she warns. The United States Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulates US energy markets. FERC's latest annual report on key market trends noted falling average prices for natural gas and electricity despite increased demand for both. New renewable energy and storage facilities are coming online at a brisk pace, making the grid cleaner and more efficient. FERC is about to get three new commissioners, who will face challenges of interregional transmission constraints and grid-integration of emerging technologies. In this new episode, “FERC-alicious: US Energy Market Trends & Regulatory Update,” host Allan Marks speaks with Milbank partner Jenna McGrath. They examine how recent FERC actions are impacting markets. They discuss trends in state and federal energy regulation, the expansion of energy storage to bolster grid stability and reliability, and strategies for alleviating transmission and interconnection bottlenecks for new renewable energy projects. They also assess the three new nominees for FERC Commissioner – Judy W. Chang, David Rosner and Lindsay See – and upcoming FERC actions and rulemaking.About the SpeakersJenna McGrath is a partner in the Washington, DC office of Milbank and a member of the firm's Global Project, Energy and Infrastructure Finance Group. Vandaag het gesprek met Maria Garcia Alvarez. Maria works as a lecturer for the program Global Project and Change Management at the Windesheim University of Applied Sciences. This program is fully integrating Education for Sustainable Development and the Inner Development Goals in its curriculum. Here she teaches about Global Challenges, Globalisation, and Geopolitics. She also coordinates the educational concept Value Creators, awarded by the Dutch Ministry of Education with the Higher Education Award 2021 (Hogeronderwijspremie). She is a member of the Board of Directors of the Dutch Comenius Network, a network of teachers and educators for innovative education. She is also a member of different international networks such as the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (led by Professor Jeffry Sachs), Earth Charter International, UN Habitat, UNAI (UN Academic Impact), the Inner Development Goals Initiative, and the Wellbeing Economy Alliance (WEAll). As a researcher, she focuses on how universities can design innovative learning spaces which integrate the third level of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD): Education AS Sustainable Development. She has authored different chapters around this topic for the first SDG Global Encyclopaedia published by Springer. She defends that there is no transition without transformation when talking about sustainability and that education should be leading the Imagination Age. Enjoy the insights of Maria. Let's get started… In this conversation with Maria I learned: Explore what we have with the lens of the Inner Development Goals The skills of the IDG's are not new, but the language is very easy to understand. The IDG's are the capabilities that students need in order to get there. The world we have constructed is structurally not working. We deserve a better world structure that supports the planet. The journey to a better world structure starts inside. Language is a cultural manifestation of how we have constructed our own world. We have a huge divide within ourselves. We almost know nothing about ourselves. We need more conversations on how we are feeling. The IDG's give us the potential to explore. Inner development is the door to a more open society where we can live like pirates, without rules. Good questions are more important than good answers. A university should be the place where you come with questions, and where you leave with more and better questions. I-m-possible (I am possible) A community of learning, where you as a teacher also learn from the students. Social media and technology have an influence on how we measure IQ now. First, connect with your students, and provide and environment where the student is in the driving seat. Rethink the way we think about education. Intelligence is going to change. We have created a society that doesn't value work. It values prestige, the elite, and a title. 4E model: explore, engage, elaborate, and evaluate Learn how to dance with the system. Stop using the word stakeholders - let's use human actors and non-human actors. With a number of 4 episodes covering Europe, Australia, Asia and the US, this series is hosted by Aurora, with guests from SMBC Group, various law firms and Aurora. The APAC region has varying levels of development when it comes to financing alternative energy solutions, with different markets exhibiting different levels of activity in energy and project finance based on technologies and geographies. Taiwan has shown increased interest in offshore wind, and its regulatory environment is favourable. Corporate PPAs are expected to be crucial in Taiwan, which has a clear regulatory framework for offshore wind. However, implementation may take some time. India has high investment and growth in alternative energy solutions, driven by demand from C&I customers, with a focus on hybrid-type solutions. Vietnam has many investors interested in its energy solutions, and has already been a leader in the region due to its solar capacity additions as part of its coal phase-out. Indonesia has room to grow in terms of renewable energy deployment, but has faced challenges with the tendering process and achieving grid-connected PPAs. There is also little visibility on how the carbon trading mechanism for coal plants will be implemented. Japan's corporate PPA market has seen a lot of interest, with batteries also becoming a major focus. However, there are concerns regarding the deliverability of some of the government targets, particularly given policy uncertainty and commodity price fluctuations.

How do you get to know each other and foster community when you're stuck on video calls all day and you've lost the spontaneity of seeing people in the office? For some of the lawyers in Milbank's Los Angeles office, the answer was to form a book club. In this episode, host Allan Marks sits down with partner Henry T. At their annual summit in Britain this year, the group of seven industrialised nations, or G7, has agreed to an infrastructure development plan for developing countries. The Build Back Better World – or B3W – is seen as an alternative to the multi-trillion dollar Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) launched by China about a decade ago. The BRI has been a relatively easy source of funding for power plants, mining, road building and a range of other development projects, and more than 100 countries have partnered with Beijing as part of the scheme. But these projects are not without controversy and there are questions about China's long-term intentions in the countries taking part. The White House says its plan is not about confronting China, but about providing a better and more transparent alternative that reflects the democratic values of the countries involved. But critics say that without a consistent China policy across its member states the G7 plan is bound to face difficulties. What exactly is B3W trying to achieve and how will it benefit the developing world? Will it compete or compliment China's BRI? Can the G7 strategy be as consistent as China's? And how open will developing countries be to accepting the promotion of Western values? Ritula Shah is joined by a panel of experts.
ESG Series #5: As the world transitions from fossil fuels to renewable power and other clean energy technologies, we are entering a “super cycle” of demand for new materials. The digitalization of the global economy also drives this demand, as power grids become smarter, sustainable and more resilient. What do all these green initiatives have in common? Batteries. Some topics we hit upon are; healthy skepticism versus hostile rejection, pathways for fringe science to pass through the gates of scientific rigor, structural and bureaucratic limitations of science in academia, and unexplained coincidences. Early this year, dementia research organization Alzheimer's Research UK launched an international initiative to improve the early detection of dementia-causing diseases. The organization presented the initiative, called the Early Detection of Neurodegenerative (EDoN) Diseases, at the World Economic Forum held in Switzerland last January. The charity will work with specialists and experts in data science and medicine from key institutions around the world. EDoN's ultimate goal is to develop a practical method of detecting early signs and symptoms of diseases that cause dementia. Currently, ways to detect dementia-causing diseases are expensive, and some of them are invasive. According to Alzheimer's Research UK, these existing procedures are not appropriate for wide-scale use. Because of this, experts involved in EDoN plan to take advantage of noninvasive and cost-effective tools like wearable devices to collect various data, such as heart rate and sleep patterns. Alzheimer's Research UK is confident that with the growing popularity of digital health technology, the project can gain large quantities of data from people around the world. A study by Alzheimer's Research UK found that 85% of adults in the United Kingdom are open to the idea of participating in tests that can determine if they are showing symptoms of an illness like Alzheimer's. Caroline Dinenage, UK Minister for Care, believes that initiatives like EDoN can revolutionize the early detection of the signs and symptoms of dementia. She added that through advanced technology, scientists may find a way to stop the disease from developing. An EDoN partner believes that with the United Kingdom's advancement in science and artificial intelligence, the country is equipped to take on this kind of ambitious initiative.

It doesn't matter if you're Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist or any other religion; having a working knowledge of the Bible stories is a must when studying English Literature and many other subjects like European History, the American Civil war, the list goes on. From Shakespeare to Chaucer, Jane Austen and Robert Louis Stevenson, many, if not all have as their cultural spark an understanding of biblical thought. Studies show a great swath of people are sorely lacking in biblical literacy. So a new global program aims to change that. It's called Teaching the Bible Academically. Chuck Stetson is the brains behind the effort. We talk about the necessity and the struggles of such a project.

Russia’s attempt to swing the 2016 U.S. election campaign for Donald Trump was just one of dozens of such operations Moscow has waged in the West in recent years. Assessing the specific impact of each act of political interference is exceedingly difficult. But analysts increasingly point to a general trend that serves Russia's interest: The operations are eroding Western voters' overall trust in democracy. This week on And Now the Hard Part, we trace the roots of Moscow's political interference and talk about how countries can fight back. “You have to send the message to those that try to undermine our democracies that there will be consequences for their actions,” says Alina Polyakova, the director of the Global Project on Democracy and Emerging Technology at the Brookings Institution and our guest this week. Environmental, social and governance (ESG) risks are becoming increasingly important to judging the credit worthiness of electric utilities, especially as climate change makes their work more challenging. On this episode of the Columbia Energy Exchange, host Bill Loveless talks to Jim Hempstead, a managing director in Moody’s Global Project and Infrastructure Finance Group. In his role at Moody's, one of the largest credit ratings firms in the world, Jim helps oversee the North American Regulated Utility and Power Team. He also heads Moody’s working group in charge of ESG issues in the Americas. In the conversation with Bill, Jim makes clear that defining ESG standards is still very much a work in progress for the credit rating firms and the companies they assess for credit worthiness. Nevertheless, ESG metrics are an important means of evaluating the utility sector where shifts are occurring not only due to climate change but also from public policies, market forces, and public attitudes about how electricity is produced and used. Jim and Bill also talk about the relevance of government policy and regulation as it relates to ESG and the power sector, including recent developments in Washington D.C. and the enactment of an historic climate law in California.
