Parenthood. One of the most rewarding and challenging roles on planet earth. Then add to the mix that your child reveals they are non-binary, or a lesbian, or both, but both meaning that two of your 3 children are now expressing they are not gendered or identifying in the sexuality that you would have thought. What do you do? You grow, you learn, you then take the family out for ice cream. Zach Selch helps to kick off the pre-PRIDE shows with this candid conversation where he shares his journey as a Father of a non-binary individual and a lesbian daughter. Dan Faill, educator, speaker, and great friend, joined me in the diner this episode. After the Top 3 Top 3 we reminisced about how Dan was my orientation leader in college and I was a homesick first year student. That jumped us into a conversation about friendship and the stories we tell ourselves when we long for connection and how do you learn who trust with your story. One of my biggest fears is being a burden to others and that impacts what we think we deserve. Dan and I bonded over how difficult it as men to let others in, share our feelings more freely, and admit when we need/want help. We then shared some random facts about ourselves, like the fact that Dan used to be a competitive mime! After the segment we discussed the difference between having a talent or hobby that you love and wanting to be paid for it. We ended by talking about that feeling like something is not quite right in your career/passion and rather than looking outside of it, you must find the courage to explore other possibilities inside of the passion area.  About the Guest:  Dan Faill has spoken to thousands of college students across the country. But rather than listing off a resume of jobs and accomplishments that most of you will tune out anyway, here are some fun facts: In high school, Dan was nominated for the senior superlative of class clown, but came in second. After his first semester in college he changed his major from Acting because his professor told him he’d never make it because his eyebrows were too expressive for the silver screen. After graduating from the University North Carolina at Wilmington, Dan knew he wanted to get a masters degree close to home, so he went to the University of the Pacific...on the exact opposite coast. Apparently following directions has never been his strong suit. Dan has been a facilitator of community building and social justice work for over a decade, and recently followed his passion to be a full time speaker, coach and consultant, helping audiences be brave enough to have the conversations that matter. He currently lives in Los Angeles where he can be close to his two adorable children, volunteering to help coach sports that he knows nothing about, all the while dreaming of North Carolina BBQ and sweet tea. https://www.danfaill.com/ (https://www.danfaill.com/) https://www.instagram.com/danfaill/ (https://www.instagram.com/danfaill/) About the Host:  Friends! Here's a somewhat stuffy bio of me:   I am an author, professional speaker, coach, host, and entrepreneur. My first book, Leading Imperfectly: The value of being authentic for leaders, professionals, and human beings, is available wherever people buy books. I speak internationally to willing and unwilling attendees about authenticity, vulnerability, and leadership. My clients include American Express, General Electric (GE), Accenture, Yale University, The Ohio State University, and many others. As a speaker, I am doing the two things I loves the most: making people think and making people laugh!  I host my own events multiple times a year. They are 2-day events called Living Imperfectly Live (and sometimes they are 1-day virtual events). They are a space where humans from every walk of life can come together to be part of a community on the pursuit of badassery. The goal is to help attendees start living the life we say we want to live. Alas, you're here because of an idea I had a number of years ago and didn't think I was good enough to pull it off. I finally acted on it and alas Diner Talks with James was born! As you can see from what I do in my professional life, Diner Talks is alligned with everything I believe in and teach. If this wasn't dry enough, and you would like to know more info about my speaking, events, or coaching feel free to check out my website: JamesTRobo.com. On this 230th episode of “Marketing Today,” host Alan Hart interviews Michael De Los Santos, founder of Mike D’s BBQ. Mike is a part of the entrepreneurs being profiled on the Discovery Channel Show, I Quit. We start our conversation with Mike’s background and how he found his way into the world of BBQ. With previous experience in the nonprofit sector and fighting for social justice, Mike believes that “if you have food, you can bring anybody in town to the table to talk while they’re eating.” Then, Mike dives into his experience on the Discovery Channel reality show, I Quit, and how it has taught him so much about the benefits of networking and being uncomfortable. Mike approaches his marketing and advertising in two ways; “one, to get sales, and two, to build that brand awareness, so people know who you are.” We talked about Mike’s experience as a father when he lost his 6-month old son and how it changed his perspective on life. “Go after all your passions and what makes you happy. Otherwise, you might not get the chance to do that.” Lastly, Mike elaborates on the challenges and opportunities that come with the world's current climate, both from social justice to the pandemic! Highlights from this week’s “Marketing Today”: Mike grew up all over the place but made his way to Durham. 1:28 Becoming a reality star was never something that Mike wanted to do. 2:14 Mike D’s BBQ is a line of sauces and dry rubs that emerged on the scene in 2014 and have exploded ever since. 2:47 The draw to BBQ came from a love of the North Carolina BBQ that Mike would eat as a kid. 3:28 Different regions have their own styles of BBQ, and Mike tries to combine the best of all worlds. 4:41 Before getting into the world of BBQ, Mike and his wife were fighting for economic justice. 6:42 Getting people together over food is more effective than other methods. 7:54 It was a difficult transition from a steady paycheck to the life of an entrepreneur with a family. 8:44 Mike and his wife are very used to working together, so running a business together has been a smooth process. 10:05 Hispanic and African American roots inspired the unique flavors that one can find at Mike D’s BBQ. 11:23 Brisket is Mike’s favorite meat to work with, even though it is usually a Texas thing. 12:24 Working with the show has given Mike the ability to be comfortable with being uncomfortable. 13:20 What it was like working with three very outgoing and successful people as an introvert. 14:55 Now more than ever, businesses have to learn how to pivot when things aren’t working. 16:13 After making his first sale and winning an award, Mike knew that he was onto something and had a business. 17:45 Having an already-established online business helped Mike D’s pivot with the global pandemic. 18:48 Advertising/marketing to grow sales vs. advertising/marketing to increase brand recognition. 20:23 Social media ads and brand-awareness sponsorships are working very well right now. 21:02 Working with NASCAR isn’t as difficult when working with the family-owned teams. 22:25 Living in a military family and moving around all the time prepared Mike to pivot and market himself. 24:41 Losing his son at only 6-months old changed Mike’s perspective on life. 25:34 Mike’s book, My Heart Warrior, chronicled the experience of losing a child through the father’s eyes. 27:04 Make no excuses. Pursue what makes you happy in the long-term because at the end of the day that’s what matters. 29:22 Right now, there is a lot of support to help black businesses, and TheNileList is doing a great job of helping people do that. 31:30 There’s an opportunity to show the black community that their lives matter, but it must be done in the right way. 32:59 Marketing with other marketers is an excellent opportunity to become a national brand. 34:13   Resources Mentioned: Mike D’s BBQ Discovery Channel “I Quit” TV Series Award-winning BBQ Richmond (VA), Roanoke Rapids (NC), Lexington (NC) African-American Pitmasters Hispanic flavors Ryan Sieg - Xfinity Series Nascar #39 Car – RSS Racing “My Heart Warrior: Living With HLHS Through A Father's Eyes” book by Mike De Los Santos com – Black-owned businesses, Khadijah Robinson (founder)   Subscribe the podcast: Listen in iTunes (link: http://apple.co/2dbdAhV) Listen in Google Podcasts (link: http://bit.ly/2Rc2kVa) Listen in Spotify (Link: http://spoti.fi/2mCUGnC ) Connect with the Guest: https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaeldelossantos/ https://twitter.com/mikedsbbq https://www.instagram.com/mikedsbbq/ Connect with Marketing Today and Alan Hart: http://twitter.com/abhart https://www.linkedin.com/in/alanhart http://twitter.com/themktgtoday https://www.facebook.com/themktgtoday/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/marketing-today-with-alan-hart/   Support the show: https://www.patreon.com/marketingtoday See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this episode, I’m talking with Texas Monthly BBQ Editor Daniel Vaughn. As many of you know, Daniel contributes BBQ restaurant reviews and cultural history articles that go way beyond what you might call typical food blogging. I’ve followed his writing since purchasing his 2013 book The Prophets of Smoked Meat: A Journey Through Texas Barbecue. Daniel’s book covers all of the varied styles of BBQ cooked across the great state of Texas in a way that showcases the various ways BBQ is prepared but, more importantly, shares the stories and history behind how those styles developed. In this regard, it has a style that’s very similar to the North Carolina BBQ book written by John Shelton Reed and his wife Dale Volberg Reed, called Holy Smoke: The Big Book of North Carolina Barbecue. As I listened to the recording of my interview with Daniel Vaughn, I realized just how much ground we covered a relatively short amount of time. Here are just a few things you won’t want to miss from my talk with Daniel Vaughn:  Daniel’s friendship with Anthony Bourdain during and after the publishing of Prophets of Smoked Meat BBQ restaurants that deserve more press than they get The impact Daniel's Texas Monthly BBQ reviews have on BBQ restaurants Why Daniel fears one particular style of Texas BBQ may be at risk of becoming a thing of the past How to know the best time to hit that BBQ spot you’ve been dying to try What it was like working with Sam Jones on his book about whole hog BBQ I counted, and during our talk, Daniel and I reference about 24 different BBQ restaurants. Most of these are within Texas, but Oklahoma and North Carolina factor into our talk as well. I think you’re going to enjoy this interview with Daniel. If you do, please take the time to tag him @bbqsnob on social media and let him know. I am sure he’ll appreciate it. ------------------------------------------------ Connect with Daniel:  Daniel Vaughn's work at Texas Monthly Find Daniel on Instagram Find Daniel on Twitter Get Daniel's Book Here Connect with Me on Social Media: The BBQ Beat Podcast Website The BBQ Beat Podcast on Instagram The BBQ Beat Podcast on Facebook The BBQ Beat Podcast on YouTube

In our newest episode, award-winning pit master Sam Jones tells David Ellner all about the roots of his North Carolina BBQ. Jones's grandfather opened the Skylight Inn as a 17-year-old barbecue lover back in 1947—and the Jones family has never stopped making pork, slaw, and cornbread since. But Jones didn't always love the idea of following the family business of making whole-hog barbecue. Hear about his journey back home, and when he first realized that barbecue wasn't just a job: it was a passion ingrained inside him from the start. Plus: The story of how Jones's "Fatback Collective" first got started. You can find some of Sam Jones's most iconic barbecue recipes by downloading the Panna app, or heading over to www.pannacooking.com.

Ep. 113 - Joe Kwon is not just the cellist for the Avett Brothers, but he's also their resident cook and food blogger.  We talk to him about his Korean food filled weekly "family reunions" growing up in North Carolina, Dave Matthews' catering, and his favorite places to eat in Nashville, Raleigh, Portland and more.  Plus he weighs in on what BBQ is the best.  Spoiler: His favorite is from eastern North Carolina (which apparently is completely different than western North Carolina BBQ.)
