Guests As the “Connection Counselor,” Joe Kwon's mission is to help professionals elevate their careers by teaching them how to connect to anyone, anytime, and anywhere. He is the creator of the “Everybody Thrives” program, which is designed to help organizations transcend statistics, increase belonging, and unlock higher performance. He is also the author of three leadership books, including Unlock Your Executive Presence: Feel like a Boss, and the host of several podcasts, including "Diversity Bites." Summary Our conversation focused on the concept of “executive presence,” the ability to command attention and inspire trust through confidence and clarity of voice and behavior. An essential component of E.P. is image – how one presents oneself to others, especially to leadership. But it's more than mere image; it's the aura you convey to leadership that you can step into the larger shoes of the next position and make things happen. E.P. gives leadership the confidence to place a bet on “future you” rather than just on “past you.” E.P. is often an essential component of getting promotions when candidates are similar in terms of skill set and track records. Joe Kwon grew up in a community of violence and with no father figure he naturally gravitated towards the support of local street gangs. At the age of 21 Joe was sentenced to 13 years in prison for directing a criminal enterprise. During his time in prison, he met a billionaire who was serving time for Australia's largest tax fraud who ended up becoming his first positive mentor who challenged his perceptions and attitudinal outlook on life. Joe learnt about business and the value of education, but most importantly his mentor taught him about self-worth from a prison cell. Through the support of his mentor Joe was able to complete his HSC while in prison and later was accepted and graduated from UNSW. From directing a criminal enterprise, today Joe is the Founder and CEO of a social enterprise (Confit) and a NFP (Confit Pathways) where he mentors that sense of self worth to incarcerated youth to thrive in society by providing pathways to employment, education and wrap-around support in the community. Confit Pathways also has a partnership with UNSW providing full scholarships with campus accomodation to young people who go through the Confit Pathways program. Joe's mission is to help reduce recidivism in Australia and create employment and education opportunities for individuals coming out of custody by breaking down societies preconceived notions of inmate stereotypes and providing community support through mentors with lived prison experience.Joe used fitness as a way to escape the revolving door of recidivism and is now about to open a social enterprise gym to help others that are affected by the justice system to do the same. Joe is known to be a catalyst and social impact innovator, using lived experience to create a platform to bridge the social gap between former inmates and the wider society through fitness. A 2022 Westpac Social Fellow and a 2022 Snow entrepreneur Joe is helping people from all walks of life train to be free.Andrew Truong is an integral member of the Confit team. From the challenges of growing up in a hardworking Vietnamese immigrant family to the tumultuous turns of a youth spent amongst the wrong crowd, Andrew had experienced it all. A two-time convict, it was during his last stint in jail that he discovered the transformative power of fitness. Drawing parallels between gruelling workouts and life's hardships, he emerged with a newfound philosophy: face challenges head-on, persevere and always keep pushing forward. Today, Andrew mentors youth, harnessing the power of fitness to reduce recidivism and provide them with a renewed sense of purpose.________________ReferencesPMID26086423 - Fazel & Wolf (2015). "Get up and meet people!" - Joe Kwon The latest episode of The New Leader Podcast is here! My guest today is Joe Kwon, who's also known as "The Connection Counselor." He is a privacy attorney, coach, podcast host, and currently Associate Director, Global Quality & Risk Management at KPMG (US). And, he is a genuinely good human being! Joe is also an author, and today we dig into his excellent book, "Unlock Your Executive Presence." In this episode you'll learn: The importance of 'blending' - what that is, and how to use it The six degrees of executive presence and how to leverage them to your advantage How to develop the ability to inspire confidence to lead...and much more! How you grow as a leader  Whether it's your manager, people from other departments, CEO, etc., if they know you, do they put their confidence in you? If they don't know you, how are you being represented? What is that thing that can make people confident in you? Once you discover that, blend it with what you already have – your skills, personality, et cetera. Because it's not about just giving them what they want, it's about bringing out the best version of yourself. Executive Presence in a nutshell Executive presence is the ability to inspire confidence that you can lead well in a given situation. That because of your presence and the way you are, people will want to put you in charge. Key to Executive Presence The key is to look at the presence, not the trappings of an executive – but what is the presence of an executive? When you're in a room and there are five people, and one person clearly seems like the executive, why is that? And I'll tell you, it's not the way they dress, it's not the way they communicate and it's not their gravitas. It's their state of being in the situation. Luis Rosado: I've worn many hats over the years- Technical Training Consultant, Network Administration Consultant, Windows Server Management Consultant, Team Lead, Manager, and Associate Director in addition to chapter leader, mentor, sponsor, and DEI strategist. As a result, I've built a strong foundation for implementing and supporting high performing and custom IT solutions. My background includes developing and modernizing functional architecture (migrating apps from on-prem to cloud) as well as enabling hybrid architecture. I've contributed to long-range financial planning for budgets up to $2M and systems with up to 35K users. What have I learned over the years? There is always a solution, sometimes many. It is important to find that right fit for that issue. I was introduced to Susan Lindner by our mutual friend Joe Kwon. He was sure we must meet, given our mutual love for the power of storytelling, and our passion for connection. He is the "Connection Counselor" after all! Joe was right. Susan is an extraordinary woman. Her experiences span the globe, and she is one of those people who finds lessons in everything, and applies every experience to personal growth. As an innovation storyteller, Susan gets to the purpose of innovation, to serve people, and creates the story that makes that connection for the stakeholders who must understand it. Susan was highly influenced by the original cultural anthropologist, Bronislaw Malinowski. He believed that to truly understand a culture and all of its complexities, you had to LIVE in that culture. Not just observe it, but be in it, breathing it, eating, sleeping, and arguing in that culture, to truly understand it. As always, the conversation took some great twists and turns, coming back to the reason for this podcast: It's all about our stories. Not the epic "I almost died" stories, but the ones we see in our daily lives, small details that combine to create our identities. Introduce yourself to Susan via LinkedIn, visit her terrific website, and be sure to watch for her book, coming out in fall, 2020.

"We are headed north." It's all right there in the first verse of the first song of the first major label album by the Avett Brothers. This band of foot-stomping, string-breaking renegades from Concord, NC, were moving on up -- creatively, artistically and, yes, commercially. But "I and Love and You" is not a sell-out album. It's a growth album. All the emotionalism is still there; but the boys -- Seth & Scott Avett, Bob Crawford and Joe Kwon -- are maturing, and asking their fans to mature with them with "I&L&Y." This beautifully-crafted and produced album -- Rick Rubin is to thank for that -- is a statement album. As they sing on "Head Full of Doubt/Road Full of Promise": "Decide what to be and go be it."  With "I and Love and You," the Avett Brothers did just that.

But when it comes to defining charismatic qualities, we're likely to fall silent or offer banalities such as "electric," "engaging," or "magnetic." If it's a day that ends in "y" Joe Kwon is probably out on tour. He's the cellist for the band the Avett Brothers, whose 10th album "Closer Than Together" recently came out, and that means hitting the road for days and often weeks on end. For a man who finds home and connection through food, this could be a hardship, but he's turned it into a pleasure. Kwon raced down from rehearsal for The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon to talk about the massive family dinners of his childhood in North Carolina, his drive for musical excellence, and the Korean dishes he craves from his mom's kitchen.

On this podcast episode, Heather welcomes Joe Kwon on the show to discuss his leadership style, a time when he was not the best version of himself and some of his key principles in life. Key takeaways: While we can learn different body language or communication techniques, it is more important to connect with people deeply beforehand for those techniques to take hold Sometimes, in order to take the fight out of someone, don’t fight back. Allow them to vent and be heard Often, once we allow people to voice concerns on one topic, their actual concerns reveal themselves. Ego can be good as a leader. The issue is whether the ego is focused just on “me” or on “we” as well Acknowledge your people in a sincere way without needing or wanting anything from them You can accomplish amazing things by changing yourself first.
