Newly elected NASCAR Hall of Famer Ricky Rudd joins us for an in-depth look at the earliest days of his career, when he went STRAIGHT from motocross to the Winston Cup circuit, with NO in between to get him prepped and ready.   He talks about the struggles he faced with his family owned team; leaving Nelson Malloch for SAFETY reasons; his take-it-or-leave-it salary at DiGard AND going to drive for Richard Childress Racing.   We do something a little different with our issue of the week segment and take a look at a FIVE-PART series Scene ran on Ricky in the summer of 1977 … VERY early in its existence.   NOTE: This show is not associated in any way with American City Business Journals, owner of the Scene brand.   Be sure to check out the latest and greatest stories from the world of NASCAR at dailydownforce.com!   Interested in The Scene Vault Podcast T-shirts? New from award-winning book publisher Octane Press, Trophies and Scars is the profoundly personal and remarkably revealing story of the life and times of NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham, as told to New York Times bestselling author Joe Garner. With forewords by motorsport legends Jeff Gordon, Rick Hendrick, and Roger Penske, the book launched in March. Trophies and Scars traces all the twists and turns of Ray Evernham's fascinating life. A son of the Jersey Shore, he was dedicated to fulfilling his boyhood dream of becoming a professional race car driver, and by age eighteen, he was banging fenders with good success on the Northeast short track circuit. When his dreams of becoming an Indy car sensation literally crashed and burned, he turned to Roger Penske's International Race of Champions (IROC), before another brutal crash forced him to give up his Indy dream for good. It was time to change careers. As a technical crew leader rather than driver, he developed new skills and strategies critical to building successful racing organizations. A brief, ill-fated, and downright volatile stint on Alan Kulwicki's crew, turned into a "right place at the right time" scenario, sparking a seminal partnership with racing phenomenon Jeff Gordon. They would prove to be one of the most potent racing duos in history. Evernham shares previously untold tales of how the pair led the No. 24 team to three championships in four seasons (1995, 1997, 1998) and an astounding forty-seven wins in just 216 starts, revealing in candid detail how and why their storied relationship came to an end. Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Getting things started, they get listeners up to speed with events taking place right after Indy, including Mecum's debut in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and the all-new Orlando Summer Special. The Mecum news continues with a fresh copy of Mecum Magazine hitting the digital newsstand. Transitioning to car news, Matt gives the latest on what he knows about Ford’s all-new electric F150 Lightning while John dishes on the brand’s forthcoming light-duty hauler, rumored to be called the Maverick. Talk moves to other topics like how the Mustang might become its own sub-brand and how the Bronco is getting a bump in horsepower. In this week's second segment, the guys are joined by NASCAR Hall of Famer Ray Evernham. Their first topic of conversation is the all-new SRX Race Series that Ray is launching later this summer, and it's set to feature drivers like Tony Stewart, Tony Kanaan, Bill Elliott and Helio Castroneves. Then it’s on to two very special race cars that Ray is closely connected with: the 2001 Dodge Intrepid that was Bill Elliott’s pole-winning car for the 2001 Daytona 500 and the 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona that was the first car to officially top 200 MPH on a closed-course circuit. Ray shares the vehicles' respective stories and their extreme provenance. Pulling into the final stretch, Matt and John dive deep into the origins of the massive Mecum Indy event, including going all the way back to its origins in 1988 and how it's grown to be a must-see event for all automotive enthusiasts.

Longtime motorsports journalist Zack Albert of NASCAR.com joins Davey (18:25) this week to discuss his career in the field, overcoming his personal battles, and stories aplenty at the famed North Wilkesboro Speedway. Albert, North Carolina born and bred, has been around racing since his childhood. He recalls his first foray into motorsports, pursuing it as a career, the various stops along the way over two decades and tremendous tales of working at North Wilkesboro, including an appropriate parting gift before its closure. Albert also overcame depression and survived a suicide attempt. He opens up about mental health and why a change in his life was a necessity at that point in time. He also has the honor being on the NASCAR Hall of Fame voting panel, and explains why he doesn't take that lightly. Plus, the two dive into his extreme passion for the outdoors, hiking, collecting typewriters and Davey explains how Zack gave him his start in NASCAR and how he has been a mentor of his for years. Davey also discusses Christopher Bell's first Cup Series victory at the Daytona Road Course, Ty Gibbs' history making triumph in the Xfinity Series and Papa Segal gives an overdue ode to a famous No. 95 in motorsports.

Seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson joins Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR) in 2021 to compete for NTT INDYCAR SERIES Rookie of the Year honors as he enters the street and road course races on the schedule. Johnson, a native of El Cajon, California, is one of the most accomplished and decorated professional athletes of his era and is the only race car driver ever to be named Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year. His historic seven championship titles are shared with NASCAR Hall of Famers Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt as the most all-time. Johnson began his record-breaking NASCAR Cup Series career in the No. 48 car in 2001. Over the course of his career, Johnson recorded 83 wins, 232 top-five, 374 top-10 finishes and 36 pole positions en route to seven championships, including five in a row from 2006-2010. Johnson ranks sixth on the NASCAR all-time wins list and is a two-time Daytona 500 winner (2006, 2013) and a four-time Brickyard 400 winner (2006, 2008, 2009, 2012). Away from the track, Johnson focuses on his family and rigorous fitness regimen. He has competed in numerous half-marathons, triathlons and a half Ironman where he placed 15th overall. One of the biggest accomplishments was running the prestigious Boston Marathon in 2019, where he finished with a time of 3:09:07. Johnson also focuses on the Jimmie Johnson Foundation, which is dedicated to helping children, families and communities in need and has donated more than $12 million to various organizations involving children and public education.

Fresh off the 2020 ARCA Menards Series championship, Bret Holmes joins Davey this week (6:50) for an all-encompassing chat. For a small, family-run team, a series title is beyond belief. In fact, Holmes and company weren’t planning on running a full-time schedule this season. But when their plans changed, so did their expectations, performance and results. Holmes delves into what the turning point in his season was and how he celebrated the title at Kansas. His father has been integral in his racing development. Holmes details sharing the title with him, as well as crew chief Shane Huffman, and why the people associated with his team mean so much to him personally. From Munford, Alabama, Holmes grew up racing on the Talladega Short Track (and eventually broke his father’s track record). His upbringing included competing against NASCAR Hall of Famer Red Farmer, who he developed a familial relationship with. But as time went on, the realistic aspects of racing caught up with him. Holmes explains how he overcame mental hurdles amid a winless drought to come out better on and off track. Plus, Holmes is closing on in his degree from Auburn University, and recalls the decision making process of attending college, being at the famous “Kick Six” game and more. Plus, his 2021 plans are beginning to take shape, with the potential for a move to the Truck Series appearing imminent. And did you know his name actually isn’t Bret?
