ACOFAE Podcast Presents: Series Fatigue: The Dryad Storm by Laurie Forest Being excited about a new release can be scary. Being excited about a new release that is ALSO the conclusion to the series is another level of excited/scary. When that new release that is also the conclusion of the series then turns out to be a DNF for BOTH Laura Marie and Jessica Marie, then the question becomes? Was it them? or Is it really that bad? The Black Witch Chronicles comes to an end with The Dryad Storm, the book that was such a DNF that is sparked a question about fatigue and the willingness to journey through the slog. How much is the reader's time worth? When do you take ownership of your reading and acknowledge that you are not having fun? What other series suffer from series fatigue? If any? All that and more is discussed as ACOFAE Laura and ACOFAE Jessica pinpoint where the series lost them and why. "Anything for the pod, but not this." This week's guests are writer Kevin Cuffe and artist Paul Gori. Kevin and Paul are the creators of the comic book Oathbound, presented by Loophole Comics, which combines the elements of fantasy epics and spaghetti westerns to tell a tale of family and redemption. Kevin and Paul tell the story of their close friendship which started on twitter despite being on opposite sides of the United States, not to mention the rest of the crew, which is located internationally. Though well-versed in comics, the two creators expressed the challenges in learning how to effectively market themselves during the Kickstarter campaign. We also discuss favorite fantasy movies from the 1980's, great spaghetti western moments and the frustrating-yet-hilarious difficulties we've faced in regarding out last names.

According to the Tax Code, a church such as Temple of Gaia or the Universal Episcopal Church is supposed to stay out of partisan politics in order to be tax-exempt. That means that I can't get into a pulpit and preach for or against a candidate. But the nature of ministry being "Comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable" means that I am supposed to face issues head-on. And if a candidate creates or becomes an issue, I need to face the issue. With some of the stuff going on as the presidential election approaches, we are not lacking for issues, including issues of basic civil rights that most people take for granted. And, precedent gives cause for concern. We need to look and see what we might need to be ready for, and keep our eyes open!
The other day in the supermarket I noticed a sign asking people to not use their cell phones at the deli counter. The problem wasn't unfortunate husbands needing more specifics on which kind of salami to buy, but people talking to who-knows-who about who-knows-what. In days before cell phones, any such "side conversation" would have been with a person standing nearby, and that conversation would have been put "on hold" when business was being transacted. By the age of three, my mommy had already impressed this on me when we went to the store. It was a part of being polite and having good manners. It occurred to me the old rules need to apply to technology, and for those of us who are Wiccan, Pagan, or of other spiritual paths can put this concept to good use. While some covens remain hidden and oathbound, the days when such isolation was either necessary or assumed are gone. Especially because of the internet, there is more interaction, learning and availability than our spiritual ancestors would have imagined. And, there are many more of us than we knew about. But, the same rules of good manners and courtesy apply in the newer media as they did in face-to-face meetings. Blessed Be!
