Anthony Pecorella is a Division 1 football punter, cancer survivor and mental health advocate. Like so many elite student athletes, he played multiple sports until he became a specialty player as a quarterback, kicker and punter. When given the opportunity to play at University of Maryland, a Big10 program, all seemed to be going well until it wasn't. One night, while with family and friends, he heard a voice in his head saying that “he would not make it until tomorrow.” In that moment, he learned that “someone could have the biggest smile on their face while fighting the biggest war in their head.” Fortunately, that moment passed but shortly after, he was faced with the hardest but most rewarding period in his life. Diagnosed with cancer, he began his treatments on a pediatric floor where he was inspired by so many young kids who taught him that, “if they can do it (fight), he can do.” In particular, a 3-year-old named Elianna taught him the power of resilience, friendship and how to “Just Keep Swimming!”  While Eli is now gone physically, her legacy and mindset lives on in Anthony as he shares his story, her story, and so many others who are struggling physically and mentally. Through his speeches and advocacy work, the message is simple. “Give each moment your all because tomorrow is not promised and always keep 10 toes on the ground” @ant_pec98, @healthyminds____

We get A LOT of emails and messages about insomnia. So when we were perusing past episodes to find the most important content to bring forth during this busy summer season, this one caught our eye. It's so easy, without the right awareness, to get caught in the unconscious loop of feeling numb, and "waiting" for things to change before doing this or that to help yourself. We put things off all the time, and the anxiety and rumination this engenders leads to TONS of insomnia. Today we dive into all of it, led by a Speakpipe from a member of our global community. If insomnia or feeling numb to life are things that affect you, this will be a great episode to reset your perspective and give you a little boost to JUST KEEP SWIMMING. Conversations with Phil Gerbyshak - Aligning your mindset, skill set and tool set for peak performance

Ever wondered how our ancient caveman brain can help us nail those sales targets? Well, Dr. Jean Oursler, the results queen herself, and sales whiz Phil Gerbyshak got together for a chat, and boy, did they have some cool stuff to share!Just Keep Swimming, Folks!First off, Dr. Oursler drops this gem: "Just keep swimming." Yeah, you got it, that's Dory from Finding Nemo! It's all about keeping your head up and moving forward, no matter what. Pretty neat advice for anyone in sales, don't you think?Your Caveman Brain: Friend or Foe?Next up, they dive into this whole "caveman brain" thing. Turns out, our amygdala, the caveman part of our brain, can either be our best buddy or our worst enemy in sales. It's all about the stories we tell ourselves. So, if you're feeling jittery about making that call, remember, it's just your caveman brain messing with you!Don't Be Shy, Just Ask!Dr. Oursler also talks about the power of asking. A lot of us in sales kind of wait around, hoping the client will give us a sign. But hey, why not take the lead and ask the right questions? It could be your ticket to more sales!Party Time: Celebrate Your WinsThey also chat about the importance of throwing a little party for yourself every time you score a win. A lot of us forget to do this, and it can lead to burnout. Plus, celebrating tells your caveman brain you're doing something right. So, go on, pat yourself on the back! The PB&J of SalesAnd lastly, Dr. Oursler introduces us to the "peanut butter and jelly method" in sales. It's all about sticking to a tried-and-true sales process, just like making a PB&J sandwich. Sure, it might sound a bit boring, but hey, consistency can bring in some sweet results! So, there you have it! Dr. Jean Oursler and Phil Gerbyshak really know their stuff when it comes to sales. They've got some great tips on using our caveman brain, asking the right questions, celebrating wins, and keeping things consistent. But don't just take our word for it, why not check out the full episode and hear it straight from the horse's mouth? Trust us, you won't regret it!Learn more from Dr. Jean, the Results Queen, at https://cavemanbrain.com ★ Support this podcast ★ This is a public episode. Episode 276: Just Keep Swimming with Slade HamIt was New Year's Eve. A generic poster advertises comedy and music at 8. It's 7:40. It's quiet. Stand-up comedian Slade Ham gets handed the mic from a mysterious showrunner. The curtain goes up at 8, and he sees 500 empty seats except for a dead old woman with an oxygen tank and a guy still vacuuming the room.If a comic performs a set in an empty room, did it really happen? According to Ham, it did, and he's got a paycheck to prove it. Houston-based comic Slade Ham and Stand up Comic Dan Bublitz Jr share many pearls for comics: why it's good to produce shows, staying with your plan, tips for different technologies that save time on promotional materials, focusing your effort on building a body of work before releasing video and audio, and how Slade fought through Covid. On today's episode, Kunle is joined by Jim Dorey, Senior VP of Inserra Supermarkets Inc., a supermarket chain owned by a family and works with ShopRite and PriceRite. Every big hit story starts with a simple one. Jim Dorey's success in working with two big retailers in the US started with him sitting in a corner of a small grocery store. Exposed to “people from all walks of life”, Jim became mindful and empathetic of people that come into the store and took the lessons he learned in building his life and his success. Equipped with discipline, lessons he learned early in his life, and the privilege of getting into Harvard Business School in an executive management program, Jim made his way up to being the president of PriceRite from being a Procurement Manager in Wakefern. He shares that it was self-discipline and a positive mindset that paved the way for him. Being able to recognize his mistakes and learn from other successful people's mistakes led him to write his book, Just Keep Swimming. It's a lesson-filled and inspiring episode as you'd hear Kunle and Jim talk about Jim's journey to success, efficient resource allocation, and distribution, getting your CPG brand or FMCG noticed, and tips on establishing a capital stack for entrepreneurs. They also talk about building connections, radiating positive energy to people, gratitude, as well as learning from others' mistakes.----------- SPONSORS:This episode is brought to you by:Klaviyo This episode is brought to you by Klaviyo – a growth marketing platform that powers over 25,000 online businesses. Do you remember in the scene in Finding Nemo when Dory says, "When life gets you down do you know what you've gotta do? Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming, Just Keep Swimming?Today I wanted to remind every listener, that yes, all that is going on in the world is very real. The failures are real, the setbacks are real, the offenses, the loss, disappointments are real, but one thing is for sure when life knocks you down, you've got to get up, regroup, but keep moving with your eyes fixed on Jesus. Let James 1:2-4 be your motivation and it says,Consider it nothing but joy, my [a]brothers and sisters, whenever you fall into various trials. 3 Be assured that the testing of your faith [through experience] produces endurance [leading to spiritual maturity, and inner peace]. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result and do a thorough work, so that you may be perfect and completely developed [in your faith], lacking in nothing.

This week’s guest came about after #76 “How To Eat And Be Happy” with therapist from the Recovery Centre,  Michelle Scott talking about eating disorders – she asked if I would be interested to talk to Olivia Hammond – Founder of Chilly Dippers which is a cold water swimming community that is growing across the UK to encourage not just physical wellbeing but to help people find and develop natural coping mechanisms for dealing with every day stress and anxiety – which of course was a definite yes from me because I hand on heart believe that the more comfortable we are with ourselves, our emotions, our feelings and learning how to express them, the easier life gets – it doesn’t stop the mountains from standing in our way, but when you have confidence in every aspect of who you are and where you’ve been, you develop a strength that carries you forwards over mountains and through the storms which are inevitable – how boring would it be to sit on a beach all day every day? I’ve talked before about how I was going to spend a weekend with a group of friends walking up Snowdon and down again but as life would have it, a family emergency cropped up which meant I couldn’t go but when they all came back, no one talked about reaching the top, it was all about the journey and who struggled and who slipped and then the champagne in the hot tub afterwards – mountains are good particularly when we climb them with friends. In this episode we talk about the importance of talking, of community, of looking around and seeing that we aren’t climbing the mountain on our own, so it’s important to express how we feel and then there’s this amazing effect that cold water swimming has – not just in the camaraderie around a hot chocolate afterwards, but also about how physically shocking your body into fight or flight helps bypass the mind and speed up the process of freeing our instinct to help us become people who have confidence in our own ability to cope when the going gets tough. It’s been proven to: Encourage Better sleep Improves circulation A Natural high Increases your metabolism Boosts your immune system Enhances happiness – releases endorphins Is great for the skin The premise of Chilly Dippers (www.chillydippers.com), is a mental health initiative set up by Olivia Sharron whilst at The University of Edinburgh to encourage more natural coping mechanisms for dealing with everyday stresses and anxieties. The focus is on how cold-water swimming and its mental and physical health benefits really takes people out of their normal routines, for even 5 minutes of something different to really help them gain some perspective of their worries.  Olivia says “I had noticed too frequently, so many of my friends battling with mental health issues and not being able to speak about it. Luckily, through the many ‘Chilly Dips’ I have hosted up in Edinburgh and in London’s Serpentine Lido - we have been able to challenge the taboo around mental health through opening up opportunities for likeminded people to share their stories / or simply just engage in a fun, outdoor activity”.  You’ve heard me waxing lyrical about the benefits of Japanese practise of forest bathing. It has been proven that intentionally spending time around trees, walking through woods and forests lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduces stress hormone production, boosts your immune system and improves the overall feelings of wellbeing – it just goes to show the importance of being aware of all the natural world has for us. On top of that, Chris Evans has been singing the praises of cold showers for months so you don’t necessarily have to take the whole plunge although I have to say, from those I know who do it, it seems to be addictive, my aunt in her 50s swims all year round in the sea in south west Wales – she posted a photo just the other day after they came out of their lockdown, the first thing she and a group of women did was to leap in the car and head to the beach, in November – and it’s cold on the welsh coast ALL year!! Lorraine Candy, editor of Style Magazine in the Sunday times recently wrote a piece on how HRT and cold water swimming together have really helped her through the menopause – and she only learned how to do the front crawl in her late 40s so there’s hope for us all! You don’t have to be a natural or seasoned swimmer – “the endorphin high lasts for some time, I can only liken the buzz to the heady days of the 90s rave scene” https://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-8895561/Icy-dips-lidos-lakes-sea-daily-high-good-HRT.html People make extraordinary claims about how cold water swimming has literally saved their lives because it’s had such a profound effect on their mental and physical health – stress relief, depression – all caused by the body learning how to protect itself when faced with a surge in cortisol https://www.sciencefocus.com/the-human-body/cold-water-swimming-why-an-icy-dip-is-good-for-your-mental-and-physical-health/ https://www.iprshealth.com/news/8-benefits-of-cold-water-swimming/   Cold water swimming may help defend from dementia by stimulating latent hibernation protein, scientists say 'Cold-shock' protein - RBM3 - was first identified in mice after they were cooled It was found to trigger the removal and then regrowth of synapses in the brain Scientists wanted to see whether humans would also be able to make the protein And tests on lido swimmers have confirmed people can also produce it So the evidence is there, for ALL ages there is a huge benefit to cold water swimming but equally, and so importantly as Olivia pointed out, the importance of talking can never be underestimated. A few weeks ago we did a couple of episodes on what Dr Becky Quicke referred to as the third initiation of a woman’s life – of menopause, and of stepping into your queendom and being there for all the other younger women who cross your path so whatever age you are, reach out, not just to your peers, but to those older than you and to those younger than you, we are not designed to live isolated and disconnected lives, we thrive on connection and community so keep swimming and keep talking – and come and join in our Facebook group page as there are women of all ages ready to connect and share together. Links are dotted through the notes but the main one for Olivia is www.chillydippers.com and my website where you can find all the podcast episodes and more www.pipagordon.co.uk

In this week’s episode I’ll be speaking with Sarah O’Neal, PhD candidate at the University of Washington, about the impacts of the proposed Pebble Mine on Bristol Bay Sockeye Salmon. Update: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers determined on Monday, October 19 that, “the project as proposed cannot be permitted under the Clean Water Act.” According to the USACE announcement, the mitigation burdens for the proposed Pebble Mine had not been met, and USACE has given developers 90 days to return with a revised proposal. But we’re not in the clear yet. Listen and learn about this critical issue and why copper mines pose a particular threat to aquatic life and salmon specifically. This week we conclude our series we've called "Just Keep Swimming". We all find ourselves in the precarious, messy middle of this crazy year- 2020. Many of us find ourselves burned out, depressed, anxious, and uncertain about our future. We know we're called to push through despite all these emotions, but how? How do we remain faithful to Jesus when we can barely wake up and face a new day of social distancing? How do we find time for rest when we have to be constantly vigilant and entertaining to our children? How do we not burn out as we are being called to be consistent activists for social justice? Our prayer is that we can answer some of these questions and more in this series. Today, Jen Young joins us to discuss sustainable activism. Not only are we in the middle of a global pandemic, we also find ourselves in the middle of a time where injustices have finally been brought to the surface. Many of us have joined the call to be activists and allies on many fronts. We here at Woven affirm those calls, but we also want to provide resources on how sustain quality activism that doesn't lead us to burn out. How can we incrementally create change, while not giving up and fizzling out? How can we join causes and fight for justice without our push being a flash in the pan? How can we rest and rejuvenate in order to continue soldiering on? How do we approach social media in a way that brings awareness with authenticity? All of these are hard questions, and we are thankful for Jen's wisdom in helping us find some of the answers. Jen has a lot of experience in the area of sustainable activism. She is the executive director of Impact 46, a faith-based nonprofit in Lawrenceville, GA that builds partnerships with a purpose to transform Lawrenceville into a thriving place with thriving people. Ep. 247: How Do I Weigh Quality and Budget in Dairy Products? In this episode, Stacy and Sarah answer a question about dairy. What if you find grass-fed dairy to be prohibitively expensive? Could you still eat it if it was conventional in a regular milk bag? Click the picture above to be taken to iTunes If you enjoy the show, please review it in iTunes! The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 247: How Do I Weigh Quality and Budget in Dairy Products? Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) Welcome back everyone! Stacy has sold her house, for real, y'all! But now she has to buy a new one or else the family will be homeless! (Not really, but it can feel like that!) Hopefully, she'll get a new house soon! Meanwhile, Paleo Principles is almost done and turned in! Think of it as The Paleo Approach and The Paleo Approach Cookbook smashed together, but more about general paleo than autoimmune. Get it in September! Sarah is just going to Just Keep Swimming until she's done! And maybe Just Survive Somehow (CW: clips are from The Walking Dead) as well Sarah is also going to record her own abridged audiobook! How cool is that! Stacy recommends the audiobook for Liz Wolfe's Eat the Yolks. Stacy's Pukka Cinnamon Licorice Tea! Today's show and question is about weighing quality and budget. How do you choose between them? Question (11:24): "I have a question about dairy- I follow AIP and have been able to reintroduce some foods. One of them is butter. Living in Canada we unfortunately don't have access to grass fed butter as readily as the US. This means that it is very hard to find any grassfed butter or dairy products and when I do, at a rare specialty health food store, grass fed dairy products are VERY expensive and very much out of our budget, even though we have set a large budget for high quality, nutrient dense foods. I have been eating butter regularly since being pregnant, and only buy Canada Grade A quality butter with cream and sea salt as the ingredients. I tolerate this well and seem to be craving this throughout my recent pregnancy. Is consuming this butter still a wise choice? In terms of other dairy products that I would like to eventually try and reintroduce what should I look for? Especially when grassfed is not an option...do the same principles apply in terms of grassfed vs conventional beef? Should I be purchasing homogenized or skim milk for my husband who does well with dairy? Should we aim to consume dairy on a less frequent basis and buy the more expensive cheeses (still not perfect or grassfed) from the deli section of the grocery store that have less added ingredients, rather than the classics large brick of brand name cheese? Any information would be greatly appreciated!!" Remember: Paleo isn't a religion. Focus on anti-inflammatory foods that are high quality and nutrition. If you're adding these kinds of periphery foods, it's you won't be kicked from the club if you don't eat grass-fed dairy. Do what works best for you. Look into local farmers in your area if possible and get a relationship with a direct source. Sarah says that many cattle in this area of Canada are pastured, but are supplemented with grains. So they're better than grain fed, but not entirely grass-fed. Dairy is a food you need to weigh if it works for you. It's a good source of vitamins and minerals, and great fats. But it's much better if it's pastured because the good stuff is in the fat. Sensitivity to milk is high. For instance, the occurrence of lactose intolerance can be as high as 90% in some populations of people of Asian or African descent. Allergy rate is 4-6%. They tested people with IBS symptoms and found that many people found relief when they eliminated dairy. Intolerance to dairy is super high! People are always talking about foods as yes or no foods, but sometimes there is a maybe food. This is where individuality comes in. Some people will tolerate something like dairy better than others. For example, Sarah and her family don't eat dairy hardly at all because they don't tolerate it well, but Stacy does eat it. Sarah recommends not drinking skim. You won't get the value that comes from the milk fat! So if you are happy with how well you tolerate dairy, then don't feel guilty about it! Stacy wants you to make a distinction between foods that make you feel good and foods that don't make you feel too terrible. For example, Stacy figured out why she thought she couldn't eat eggs: because she was eating them alone and her lack of gallbladder made it hard for her to eat that much fat with nothing else. Take an appraisal of your diet like Stacy does. Figure out what's making you feel your best! Then eat that. You will tolerate things better if you are eating a nutrient dense diet, with vegetables and ample sleep and low stress. Everything works together and if things fall apart, you will start reacting to more things! Paleo doesn't have to break the bank. Making just the basic choices will get you so far, even if you can't do grass-fed, organic, etc. "Don't Let Perfection Be the Enemy of Good." - Robb Wolf Figure out what will work best for you AND how you can fit that into your life. Just Keep Swimming is not only the name of Andres’ Ryan’s fish farm, it is also his creed. Andres is an aquarium fish farmer in Florida who has bred and raised literally hundreds of species, but now concentrates on the more delicate and difficult-to-spawn aquarium fish, including clown loaches, cardinal tetras, Galaxy rasboras, fancy plecos, and freshwater ornamental shrimp. Join us, as Andres and I discuss fancy fish, the challenges of commercially raising new species, and the future of the hobby! Questions or Comments? Send them to: DrRoy@petliferadio.com.
