It's the end, the end of the Seventies. It was a decade that had started with Edison Lighthouse and ended with Another Brick in the wall. After 221 number one singles, the decade that had given us everything from Bowie to Bell bottoms, from Chopper bikes to Chiquitita, Glam to Punk, and Sapphire to Steel, was closing down - and at a sensible hour too!On the 31st December 1979, Kenny Everett asked the (more discerning) viewers on ITV, if he would indeed make it 1980. With the iconic help of Roxy Music, David Bowie, The Boomtown Rats and many more, he just about crossed over into that new decade. But really listens, the future was already with us.And yes, 1979 did seem rather grim - a winter of discontent, political upheaval, TV strikes and terrorism. But isn't this exactly the kind of period when popular culture and significantly POP, POP, POP MUZIK comes to save us all? The kids were indeed, alright! So, in the company of some very special guests - singer/songwriter and pop legend Nick Heyward and Record Collector's very own Daryl Easlea - as we revisit the cultural tsunami that is the NOW Yearbook 1979. Rediscover a glittering embarrassment of 7” smashes from the likes of Sparks, Chic, Blondie, Squeeze, Ian Dury & the Blockheads, Roxy Music. The list, just like the glorious pages of Daryl's 1979 diary goes on and on.As well as sharing his fabulous boxset, 1993–1998: The Epic & Creation Years, Nick tells us about how important 1979 was in shaping his own musical journey. From the early days of (what would become) Haircut 100, to rediscovering kitchen sink somewhere up a junction, to defining a look and sound as the seventies morphed into the eighties. We explore the sounds of 1979 - from XTC to The Knack, from Rainbow to Sad Cafe (yes, really!), how punk was evolving into New wave, which was evolving into New Pop which… (yes, we get the idea: Ed)And also how video wasn't exactly killing the radio star, but through visuals a new age was really dawning for pop. So, lets take a One Way Ticket, One Step Beyond some Parisienne Walkways (we're not keeping these in! Ed)1979.Wow, indeed. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Swedish band ABBA – made up of Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, and Anni-Frid – conquered the global record charts in the 1970s, and became one of the most successful music groups of all time, conservatively selling more than 150 million albums worldwide. After winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974, the quartet would release a string of smash hit songs that made them household names across Europe, the Americas, Australia, and even parts of Asia. The group disbanded in 1982, but found renewed success in the 90s and 2000s thanks to their inclusion in cult-movie soundtracks, the record-breaking compilation album ABBA Gold, and a blockbuster musical adaptation – and eventual Hollywood film – Mammia Mia. Now, more than 50 years after the group's debut, the Great Pop Culture Debate wants to determine the Best ABBA Song of all time. Songs discussed: “Dancing Queen,” “Thank You for the Music,” “Waterloo,” “Voulez-Vous,” “Super Trouper,” “Money, Money, Money,” “Lay All Your Love On Me,” “Mamma Mia,” “Gimme Gimme Gimme,” “Chiquitita,” “The Winner Takes It All,” “Take a Chance On Me,” “S.O.S.,” “The Name of the Game,” “Knowing Me, Knowing You,” and “Fernando.” Join host Eric Rezsnyak and GPCD panelists Curtis Creekmore, Derek Mekita, and Kate Racculia as they discuss 16 of the most beloved songs by ABBA.

Hosted on Acast. While the former US president Donald Trump did pay $1m in taxes in 2018, he didn't pay anything in his last year in the White House. Also: England to require negative Covid test for arrivals from China, and Abba's Chiquitita song raises millions of dollars for UNICEF.
Spain and Israel have become the latest countries to announce mandatory covid testing for travellers from China, as fears in China grow that the rapid rise in cases may overwhelm healthcare facilities. Yet Chinese government figures on Friday recorded only five thousand new infections across the whole of the country. Also in the programme: A new verdict in Myanmar means that the pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi is likely to spend the rest of her life in jail; and we hear abiut the story behind ABBA's hit song "Chiquitita" and how it's helped children for more than 40 years. Look, Thephiloi, you don't actually have to skip this one (it's actually one of my personal favorites, tbqh) but I'm gonna warn you up front: we were in a PRETTY SILLY MOOD when we were recording this one. Come for the discussion of Hosea's prophecies of ruin for the iniquitous and faithless houses of Israel and also how much he just really hates his own wife, stay for our extended discussion of that one ghost from Ghostbusters, a film they showed to children on television. Topics of Discussion: A child's pronunciation, what is (and more importantly is not) a Christmas song, the issue of royal turnover, the opposite of boredom, the days of the balls, the original middle panel, the sin of raisin cakes, two kinds of wine, that one ghost, a hungry prophet, a silly dove move, advice for the Memphis Grizzlies. Hymnal: "Wrecking Ball" by Miley Cyrus, "Chiquitita" by Stephen Mann of English Martyrs Church (https://www.youtube.com/user/Principal45) Apocrypals is edited by Editorial Deacon Lucas Brown. The Winner Takes It All'.

Vicky Kendell has done it all in primary education, including being a headteacher. But when she realised that she wasn't loving the job she was doing, she went back to a role that gave her the best of both worlds. She is now an Assistant Headteacher working with the children every day and loving it! Vicky is a person who has the courage of her convictions and she is never afraid to do the right thing, even when it may seem surprising to some people. Her passion for being a teacher comes through loud and clear in this inspiring podcast. In this episode we discuss ... How getting children excited about their learning can feel daunting when you are an inexperienced teacher and you think you won't be able to get them calm again. Why it is important to bounce questions back to children when they are capable of answering for themselves if they think hard. The importance of developing lessons by following children's interest so the learning is made more meaningful and memorable, but realising this is a difficult skill that comes with experience. The value of weaving when managing behaviour so you match the strategy to the child's needs at any particular time. Why having a network of supportive professionals is so important. How humble it makes you feel when children will do anything to help you and look after you because that's what you do for them. Why laughter is so important in class, especially when the children come from challenging backgrounds. In one class Vicky taught the children refused to leave the classroom at the end of the year, so strong was the bond between her and the children. The importance of verbalising to children that you really care about them. One way you can show this is by sharing a bit of yourself with them to show you empathise with how they are feeling, because you've been where they are now. How singing the Abba song Chiquitita in a guest appearance in a Year 6 musical raised her credibility enormously, even though the boys tried to make her laugh by singing chicken tikka as she performed. Being surprised by a parent reaction to a class assembly when developing words to describe the giant in Jack and the beanstalk. Making a real difference for all the children in her care, especially the SEN children and their families. The importance of asking for help. It is a real strength to seek advice so you can improve your practice; it is never a weakness. The pride you feel when a parent says they want you to lead her child's appeal for more SEN support as she trusts you more than anyone else, including the specialist appeals person. The joy of being told that you have a wonderful reputation with parents and other professionals because of the way you stick up for the rights of the child and make sure they get the very best education possible. Why you must remember to put on your own oxygen mask first! If you collapse through overwork whilst trying to please everyone then you will be no use to anyone. Use the phrase, 'I'm afraid I can't do that right now'. The need to balance the tough moments in teaching (because there are some) with the numerous wonderful moments so you keep in perspective the balance of good and not so good.

Have you ever wondered why bad things happen to good people, Theophiloi? Well, we've found the answer in the Book of Job, a literary classic and/or utter failure, and it's pretty simple: God's indifference is indistinguishable from God's wrath. That's... kind of a weird idea to show up in Bible, though, so join us as we spend an hour unpacking it along with the long-suffering title character and the Creator of the Hippopotamus. Topics of Discussion: (sigh) the weather, Benito's patreon which I want to make clear does not support Chris (but is still worth it), hiring an editor for the show, the Inverse Pascal's Wager, Old Man Elohim, interchangeable children, chaos dragons, dinosaurs in the creation museum. Hymnal: "When I Needed You" by Canadian superstar Carly Rae Jepsen from the critically acclaimed 2015 album Emotion, "Chiquitita" by Stephen Mann of English Martyrs Church (https://www.youtube.com/user/Principal45) Offertory: As Enoch writes, "Whoever of you spends gold or silver for his brother's sake, he will receive ample treasure in the world to come." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message
