For years, Phil Alden Robinson had been struggling to get his favorite book, Shoeless Joe, turned into a film. When he finally got his wish, it was more than he bargained for. Pressure and anxiety nearly brought Robinson and Field of Dreams to a screeching halt. In this episode, I discuss what saved Robinson and his film. I also reveal a real-life Doc Graham hidden among the crew, and I dig into the most “Field of Dreams” story there ever was, linked to two people integral to the movie.
W.P. Kinsella never saw the father-son relationship as the central emotional story in his book, Shoeless Joe. This is just one of many revelations in Episode 6, where I follow the path of writer/director Phil Alden Robinson, who roamed the streets of Hollywood for years with the vision of what Shoeless Joe would become on the big screen. But it was this very struggle and years of failure that led to what many called a magical script.

"Field of Dreams," directed by Phil Alden Robinson and released in 1989, is a film that transcends the boundaries of sports and delves into the heart of human experience. Starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, and Burt Lancaster in his final film role, this cinematic gem explores themes of redemption, the power of belief, and the importance of following one's dreams. Set against the backdrop of America's favourite pastime, baseball, "Field of Dreams" is not just a movie about the sport; it's a poignant story about family, reconciliation, and the magic that can happen when you dare to dream.Plot SummaryThe story begins with Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), a novice Iowa farmer who lives with his wife, Annie (Amy Madigan), and their daughter, Karin (Gaby Hoffmann). Ray is haunted by the unresolved issues with his late father, John Kinsella, a baseball enthusiast who dreamed of becoming a professional player. Ray's peaceful life takes a dramatic turn when he hears a mysterious voice whispering, "If you build it, he will come." Despite the absurdity of the message, Ray interprets it as an instruction to build a baseball diamond in his cornfield, believing it will somehow bring back his father's spirit.Cinematography and VisualsJohn Lindley's cinematography captures the bucolic beauty of the Iowa landscape, transforming it into a timeless, almost mythical place where the impossible becomes possible. The scenes of the baseball diamond at dusk, with its perfectly manicured grass and ethereal lighting, evoke a sense of nostalgia and wonder. The visual contrast between the golden cornfields and the lush green of the baseball field symbolises the intersection of reality and fantasy, grounding the film's magical realism in a tangible world.Character DevelopmentKevin Costner's portrayal of Ray Kinsella is a perfect blend of earnestness and vulnerability. His journey from scepticism to belief is the emotional core of the film. Costner's performance is subtle yet powerful, conveying Ray's internal struggle and ultimate redemption with a quiet intensity. Amy Madigan's Annie is a supportive and fiery counterpart, providing comic relief and grounding the story in reality. Her unwavering belief in Ray's vision is a testament to the strength of their relationship.James Earl Jones delivers a standout performance as Terence Mann, a reclusive author who becomes an unlikely ally in Ray's quest. Initially cynical and disillusioned, Mann's character undergoes a transformation that parallels Ray's, culminating in a poignant speech about the enduring power of baseball. Ray Liotta's portrayal of "Shoeless" Joe Jackson is haunting and enigmatic, embodying the unresolved injustices of the past. In his final role, Burt Lancaster brings a touching grace to the character of Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham, a man whose dreams of playing baseball were never realised.Themes and Symbolism"Field of Dreams" has rich themes that resonate deeply with audiences. The film explores the concept of redemption, not just for individuals but for entire communities. The ghostly baseball players who emerge from the cornfield represent not only the past legends but also the dreams and aspirations that never came to fruition. Ray's act of building the baseball field becomes a form of penance, a way to atone for his estrangement from his father and to honour the unfulfilled dreams of others. The film also delves into belief and the courage to follow one's dreams, even when they seem irrational or impossible. Ray's leap of faith in building the baseball diamond is a powerful metaphor for the risks we take in pursuing our passions. The voice that guides Ray is never fully explained, adding to the film's mystical quality and leaving the interpretation open to the audience.Historical and Cultural Significance"Field of Dreams" is steeped in American cultural history, particularly the lore of baseball. Including "Shoeless" Joe Jackson and the Black Sox Scandal of 1919 adds historical depth to the story. The film pays homage to baseball as a unifying force in American culture, a sport that connects generations and embodies the nation's spirit. The movie's release in 1989 coincided with a renewed interest in baseball films, with other notable releases like "Major League" and "Eight Men Out." However, "Field of Dreams" stands out for its introspective and philosophical approach, appealing to sports fans and those who appreciate good human drama.Impact and LegacyOver three decades since its release, "Field of Dreams" has cemented its status as a classic, continually referenced in popular culture and often cited as one of the greatest sports movies ever made. Its famous line, "If you build it, he will come," has entered the lexicon, symbolising the power of belief and the magic of dreams. The film's impact extends beyond the screen; the actual field built for the movie has become a tourist destination in Dyersville, Iowa, drawing fans worldwide eager to experience the magic. Major League Baseball even hosted a "Field of Dreams" game in 2021, bringing the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox to play in a specially constructed stadium near the original film set, further testament to the film's enduring legacy."Field of Dreams" is a film that speaks to the dreamer in all of us. Its blend of magical realism, heartfelt performances, and profound themes creates a timeless story that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages. By intertwining the simple joys of baseball with the complexities of human emotion, it reminds us of the importance of following our dreams and the possibility of finding redemption along the way. Whether you're a die-hard baseball fan or simply a lover of great cinema, "Field of Dreams" is a movie that will leave you believing in the impossible and cherishing the power of dreams.Check out the new website and leave us a message or a voicemail.https://www.borntowatch.com.au/Please follow the Podcast and join our community at https://linktr.ee/borntowatchpodcast If you are looking to start a podcast and want a host or get guests to pipe in remotely, look no further than Riverside.fmClick the link below. https://riverside.fm/?utm_campaign=campaign_1&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=rewardful&via=matthew

What a coincidence this was mentioned at last night's Academy Awards, we watched the 1989 baseball fantasy Field of Dreams. Directed by Phil Alden Robinson and based on Canadian novelist W. P. Kinsella's 1982 novel Shoeless Joe, the film stars Kevin Costner as a farmer who builds a baseball field in his cornfield that attracts the ghosts of baseball legends, including Shoeless Joe Jackson (Ray Liotta) and the Chicago Black Sox. Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones and Burt Lancaster (in his final film role) also star. Come join us!!! We're finally getting around to our RANDOMLY GENERATED MOVIE REVIEW that we randomly picked after discussing Roman Polanski's “Oliver Twist” several weeks ago and we're going full-on DAD BONER THEATER because we're gonna be cracking open our very first movie in the world of Tom “Fancy” Clancy. Yep. This is the most we've encountered of the fictional character known as Jack Ryan and this soft reboot starring Ben Affleck as the third person to ever play this character seems ultra relevant in a new post 9-11 world but, in fact, this movie was completed before that happened. We're talking about Phil Alden Robinson's 2003 thriller “THE SUM OF ALL FEARS”. M'man James Cromwell is in this thought, as well as a swaggering Morgan Freeman mic dropping intelligence bombs on the heads of the young folk under his wing. That person is Jack Ryan and HOLY SHIT A NUCLEAR BOMB GOES OFF IN THIS MOVIE. NOBODY TOLD ME! BALTIMOOOOOORRRREEEE!!!! WHERE'S JOHN WATERS!?!? WHO DID THIS??? WHO!?!?!? Stay tuned until the end as we randomly generate our next random movie to review that we will get to. Eventually. If there is one sport that dominated the movies until the 2000s, it's America's Pastime: Baseball. From Pride of the Yankees to The Natural, no sport seemed more cinematic or American than Baseball. Though times have changed and baseball isn't the dominant sport it used to be, it still warms the heart with nostalgia stories of yesteryear. But does Field of Dreams bottle those warm feelings up into a great movie? On this episode of Capital Games Movie Club, Kim Shactman and Wiz discuss the 1989 baseball fantasy film "Field of Dreams," starring Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta and Burt Lancaster, directed by Phil Alden Robinson. Is this a heartwarming trip through America's Pastime or a cloying exercise in saccharine? Find out in our review!
Jed Bookout joins us on this episode as we explore Phil Alden Robinson's 1989 paternalistic, cornfed, heartland classic Field of Dreams. We discuss the film's disquieting subtexts and alternative readings, grappling with multiple surrealistic and existential readings. We discuss its similarities and lack thereof to the filmography and sensibilities of Douglas Sirk & Frank Capra. We discuss whether the central conceit and deus ex-machina of the film -- the mysterious, uncredited voice -- is the remnants of a Berkeley acid trip, a biblical parable, or the summoning of a cult leader. We discuss whether the film would turn into a sinister horror movie if the James Horner score was removed. We discuss Kevin Costner's salt of the earth gravitas and onscreen persona. In fact, we discussed so much we ended up matching the official runtime of the movie. Enjoy!

For the final episode of Film Stories in 2022, something a bit special: a welcome back to director Phil Alden Robinson, who joins Simon to tell the story of 2002's Tom Clancy adaptation, The Sum Of All Fears. They talk about how Robinson came to the project, and the challenge when they ended up having to use locations booked for an entirely different film. Plus, dealing with Tom Clancy, the possible sequel that never was, and the incredibly spoiler-y trailer for the film. Robinson also chats about his late addition to directing Band Of Brothers, and what happened post-The Sum Of All Fears. Thanks to everybody who's supported Film Stories this year. Premise. A year after the series finale of The Good Wife, an enormous financial scam destroys the reputation of young lawyer Maia Rindell and wipes out the savings of her mentor, Diane Lockhart. The Good Fight is an American legal drama produced for CBS's streaming service CBS All Access. It is the platform's first original scripted series. The series, created by Robert King, Michelle King, and Phil Alden Robinson, is a spin-off and standalone sequel to The Good Wife, which was created by the Kings. On July 20, 2021, Paramount+ renewed the series for a sixth season. On May 27, 2022, it was announced that the sixth season will be the series' last; it premiered on September 8, 2022. As of September 15, 2022, 52 episodes of The Good Fight have been released. The Good Fight: Julianna Margulies Won't Return as Alicia Florrick. The Good Fight is set to return for its sixth season on Paramount+ sometime in the summer of 2022. You can see new photos of Braugher in the upcoming season of the popular series as well as read its official description down below. As it were, The Good Fight films in Brooklyn, in the borough's northernmost neighborhood of Greenpoint. Filming takes place at Broadway Stages, according to The Cinemaholic, which notes that giant posters of the Chicago skyline and other such props help The Good Fight pass off Greenpoint for Chicago. The Good Fight, a law series starring Christine Baranski, Audra McDonald, and Cush Jumbo is available to stream now. Watch it on Prime Video, Paramount Plus or The Roku Channel on your Roku device. The Good Fight season 6 will be the show's last. The series is a spinoff of The Good Wife, which was created by Robert and Michelle King for CBS in 2009 and proceeded to run for seven seasons through 2016. Fighting the good fight of faith involves running from sin and pursing things such as righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fighting the good fight of faith is about making a choice – a choice to pursue God's will and a life of faith on a daily basis. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/chrisabraham/message

In 1992 we got into feet with Phil Alden Robinson's heist comedy, Sneakers. When it's discovered that a security specialist is a fugitive on the run, his team helps him perform a heist for the NSA that can clear his name for good. But when it's discovered that things are not as they seem, the team must scramble to make things right and keep the world a little safer. Starring Robert Redford, Dan Aykroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McDonnell, River Phoenix, Sidney Poitier, and David Strathairn, this flick did not lack talent and brought in a respectable $105 million from the $23 million budget. But, does it hold up? Listen in as Jon, Colin, and Brent, discuss government security shortcomings and the value of a phone number as we try to see if Sneakers kicks ass or has a weak sole.
This week Daniel returns (!) to join Lee as they welcome friend and fellow podcaster Bo Ransdell, in order to have a quite meaty conversation about Phil Alden Robinson's "Sneakers" (1992), starring Robert Redford & Ben Kingsley. Things covered: old school hacking talk, and what the film gets right and wrong about it; the wonderful ensemble cast elevating the material; the politics behind the film; the comparisons to the 1970s paranoid thrillers this film draws from; the still-unmade tv series, and if that would even be a good idea to do, especially today. Also, Bo gets to play The Movie God Game, and Lee and Bo talk about what they've watched lately. Listen to this one by planting a bug, spying with a camera, or patching into a satellite. We don't care how you listen, just that you do! "Sneakers" IMDB Check out a ton of great podcasts, including all of Bo's, at Legion Podcasts. It's the end of our baseball series, movie fans, and what a better way to end it than by talking about Phil Alden Robinson's fantastic fantasy film from 1989, "Field of Dreams." Considering Pete's disdain of Kevin Costner (at least in Bull Durham), it's a refreshing surprise to hear that he really likes this movie. On the other hand, it's a bit disturbing to hear Andy talk about why he loves it so much. Regardless, it's clearly a great movie with a fascinating script about a character who is a grownup on a hero's journey to becoming a man. Powerful stuff. Join us -- Pete Wright and Andy Nelson -- this week on Rash Pixel's "Movies We Like" as we discuss the great Oscar-nominated script by Robinson and why it has such an interesting structure, setting us up right out of the gate for this fantasy world we're in. We talk about the mythos it creates, both in the film and in the real world. And we chat about the crew, the great actors and James Earl Jones' amazing speech. It's one worth talking about, so listen in! In addition, we touch on the amazing week The Avengers has had and what it could mean for Joss Whedon. We also discuss Captain America's possible strange tie to Ronald Reagan. We discuss some pretty-bad-but-entertaining-nonetheless movies, and we talk about the possibility of maybe doing an episode in the future using Google+ hangouts. It's a great week! Come on in!
