It's been revealed Taronga zoo staff risked their lives to search for two children who had become separated from their school group while a family of lions were on the loose. Shane Watson has revealed in his new book that he spent almost 18 months after the tragic death of Phillip Hughes “petrified” that he would suffer the same fate. Savagely killed by her jealous ex after weeks of stalking and threats, Ruth Mataafa was victim to “domestic violence at its worst”. Former Australian Cricket Coach Darren 'Boof' Lehmann tells Pat that Andrew Symonds was the most talented cricketer he's ever coached; "he was the best, he had it all." "The only thing was he needed to go fishing so I would tell him that I didn't want to see him for three days." Boof also reflects on the Phillip Hughes tragedy.
Dr Orchard was on the field that day in 2014 when Phillip Hughes got hit in the head by a cricket ball and died later from his injury. It marked the beginning of a long campaign by Dr Orchard and others to introduce concussion rules in cricket. In late 2019, Marnus Labuschagne became the first concussion substitute in the 142-year history of Test cricket. In this episode, Dr Orchard talks about the research, advocacy and negotiations that went into convincing the cricket world of the need for concussion rules. Why like-for-like replacements are so important in the game, and the increasing need to address the possible dangers of repeated head impacts in any sport.

Phillip Hughes is a great guy and someone I totally met by chance after a series of random events caused by the lockdown in the UK in 2020. See some good did come out of the lockdown! We have so much in common, including shared geeks on all things marketing! I love how Phillip sees opportunity when he discovers issues and then creates solutions using software to overcome / solve these issues. So Phillip is an Entrepreneurial Software Developer and Guitar Playing Fisherman. With over 14 years of software and IT experience. WHAT A COMBINATION “Having worked as the technical founder of a start-up. It frustrated me with how long it took us as a business to review our digital marketing analytics. So I decided to see if I can solve the headache myself instead of looking for a solution. Elementary Analytics was born, and I've spent the past few years developing the product. Phillip Hughes may be the ultimate side hustle guy. A software developer and podcast host based in Stockport, England, Phillip has had to push outside his comfort zone to learn how to market and sell products. He's developed several programs, including apps to help English football fans find the right place to go to watch the latest game to a fishing log app that helps fishermen, as well as a mail merge program for Outlook. Like many developers, his ideas have grown out of a problem he wanted to solve for himself and his own interests. In our talk, he revealed that he's shifted from a “build it and they will come” approach to a “sell first, build it later” one. He credits the ideas of others he's learned from, like Tim Ferris, Seth Godin, and Pat Flynn, who opened up the idea of testing and validating an idea before building it out. He also shared the important lessons he's learned from training for endurance events: keep going. His podcast, “Find Your Side Hustle,” offers ideas and inspiration for others doing side hustles. Now let's get better together Actions to Try or Advice to Take Getting out of your comfort zone is probably advice you've heard before, but Hughes stresses that consistency is key; endurance training has taught him that persistence in testing those boundaries is what's going to keep you going. There are always lessons in failures; they tell you what you need to work on strengthening. If you're someone who builds something and then tries to sell it, try inverting it. This is called validating: put your idea out there and see if there's interest before spending hours on development. The eloquent and encyclopaedic Gideon Haigh joins Diana and Donald to chat all things cricket. We learn about when and why cricket started in Australia, its greasy foothold in America and its unabating grip within the Indian sub continent.Gideon reads a passage from his profile on Shane Warne featured in The Monthly in September 2005 ('Beach Boy'), which preceded a legendary Test match that summer and Gideon's book, On Warne. We cover a lot of ground (sorry) in this special Christmas edition of Greenland, in which we zero in on one of the great Australian pastimes - playing or watching cricket. The Boxing Day Test is one of the fixtures on our national sporting calendar, played on the hallowed turf of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG).Links to some stuff we refer to/further reading:The enduring legacy of Phillip Hughes, article in The Australian by Gideon Haigh, 27 November 2019. This is a stunning reflection on a post-Hughes cricket world.Gideon Haigh's most recent book, This is How I Will Strangle You is out now. It examines the tortuous experience of Natasa Christidou who was sexually abused by her father. If (like Diana) you can't get enough of Gideon's writing, here's a link to all of his published work and website so you can devour it there. A word about our cover art Australia is currently experiencing raging bushfires across New South Wales and Queensland. Tahnee is a highly experienced psychologist with a background in mental health, trauma, substance use, complex co-morbid presentations and corporate psychology. For the past four years, she has specialised in critical incident response and has worked with various people involved in and affected by the tragic passing of cricketer Phillip Hughes, the Sydney Lindt Café siege, several Royal Commissions and the Nepal Earthquakes Rescue Mission. She’s essentially like the mental health paramedic, but instead of a medical kit full of butterfly stitches and IV drips, she has her words and knowledge to assist with the mental trauma of a situation with great physical trauma and danger. This conversation talks a lot about trauma and the effects of trauma. Part of the chat takes us to a pretty grim place and about 1/2 hour in there’s a conversation about a case she worked on that involved a kid - if you want to skip ahead a few minutes I won’t be upset. NSW Breakers cricketer - and complete life overachiever - Trent Copeland gets into the nitty gritty of cricket - the absolute mental toughness a player needs; his career path from country cricketer to debuting for Australia at the SCG; the grand scale of success that exists in the game; the current playing crop and state of Aussie cricket; and why he had to stop wearing the gloves. He talks about Phillip Hughes’s death and how it’s affected him and other players as a person and a player and how their instincts are now more welfare-first. Plus there’s fantasy sports - especially the American leagues, his efforts as a teen to play every sport he could, coaching kids and the obstacles his marriage to netballer Kim Green faces as they both manage their playing schedules. He studies, trains, plays, coaches, commentates! But don’t try to take him on in anything, he’s ultra-competitive and you’d probably go down!
