Roderick Owen (born 31 January 1967) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with St Kilda, Melbourne and the Brisbane Bears in the Victorian/Australian Football League (VFL/AFL). Owen, who had only recently turned 16 when he made his league debut for St Kilda in 1983 against North Melbourne at Arden St Oval, suffered from various injuries early in his career and missed the entire 1985 VFL season. Owen had to wait until his 17th game, in 1986, to experience a win, with St Kilda having lost the previous 16 games he had played in. A Mentone Grammar recruit, Owen kicked a career high 39 goals in 1987, the second most by a St Kilda player that year behind Tony Lockett. After leaving St Kilda in 1990 Owen played out the season at Victorian Football Association (VFA) club Frankston and was then traded to Melbourne for Stephen Newport. He kicked two bags of five goals for Melbourne in 1991 against Carlton and North Melbourne. After just one year at Melbourne he was traded to Brisbane for the 1992 AFL season. Owen had a particularly strong game against Fitzroy at Princess Park when he kicked eight goals and six behinds, a club record against the Lions. Once he finished in the AFL, Owen played for Northern Territory Football League (NTFL) side Wanderers Football Club, where he was club leading goalkicker in the 1994/95 season with 39 goals, also at Broadbeach Cats Cairns, Noosa Tigers and Cheltenham Football Clubs. As a child in the 1970s, Owen attended Beaumaris Primary School, where he was one of a number of children to have been sexually assaulted by the school's librarian and sports coach, Darrell Ray. Trauma from these events, combined with the party culture at St Kilda in the 1980s, led to a decades-long battle with addiction to amphetamine and pain killers. In December 2000, Owen was sentenced to nine months in prison for assault, which he served at Dhurringile prison farm. Owen entered rehabilitation for his substance abuse issues in 2018, and has discussed his experiences with the media since the allegations against Ray from his time at Beaumaris PS become public in around 2020. In later years Owen has worked as a concreter and boxer. In 2021, he received a written apology from the St Kilda FC relating to a lack of support for his personal issues during his time at the club. He has also pledged his brain to the Australian Sports Brain Bank for post-mortem research

Andy Bennett is proof you don't need to be born in Tasmania to become a Tasmanian – a very passionate Tasmanian. Originally from Broken Hill, Bennett was very late to football but quickly rose to prominence representing the revered South Australian state team in the late 1970's. After stints with Hawthorn and St. Kilda in the VFL, which included a near-death encounter with the fearsome Tony Lockett, Bennett made the lifechanging decision to move south for a coaching opportunity with Sandy Bay. He fell in love with Tasmania and would ultimately lead the state representative side to famous wins over South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria during a remarkable period of success for Tassie footy.

Tony Jewell commenced his senior football career with Oakleigh, in 1963. He tried out with St Kilda but failed to impress and was turned away. Richmond, however, decided to take a punt on him and he went on to give them good service, mainly as a half back flanker or back pocket, in 80 VFL games between 1964 and 1970. After a two-year stint as coach of the Richmond reserves, which included overseeing a flag in 1977, he took over as senior coach of the Tigers in 1979. A year later he led them to an emphatic 81-point grand final defeat of Collingwood. Just one season later, however, Jewell was sacked with Francis Bourke being installed as coach in his place. Jewell later had unsuccessful stints as coach of St Kilda (1983-4) and Richmond once more (1986-7). In this episode Jewell opens up about his brutal sacking at Richmond, recruiting Tony Lockett to St Kilda and how he almost became coach of Collingwood instead of Leigh Matthews. Sydney's thrilling preliminary final win over Essendon in 1996 remains one of the club's most famous. It was Rodney Eade's first year as coach. In this episode, the man known as "Rocket" explains why he had doubts as Tony Lockett lined up for goal after the siren, how that match was the night Sydney accepted the Swans, as well as who he'd choose between Plugger and Lance 'Buddy' Franklin. He also addresses the main issues he sees in today's games, the advice he would give the AFL and what he would do if he was in charge of the league's umpiring department.Join the football Hall of Famer and host Shane McInnes as they discuss one of the most famous 'misses' of all-time on Footy: Then and Now. --------------------------------------------------------------------Each Wednesday, Shane McInnes is joined by champions of the game to step down memory lane and discuss a momentous edition of a corresponding match of that round.Never-before-heard stories about iconic footy moments, life after footy, and plenty of banter and insight to get you hyped for the round ahead!Don't miss an episode: Follow/Subscribe to Footy: Then and Now on your podcast platform of choice today.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Following a decorated career in the VFL, Rodney Eade would make the transition to the coaches box with relative ease. Stints as an assistant coach at Brisbane and North Melbourne would be followed by the senior coaching job at the Sydney Swans in 1996. In his first year at Sydney Eade was able to transform the Swans into a premiership threat, with his side playing off in the '96 Grand Final. After 152 games at the helm of the Swans, Eade's time in the harbour city came to an end as the axe came swinging his way. With the Western Bulldog searching for a coach at the end of 2004, Eade would find his way to the Whitten Oval where he would lead a talented side to three consecutive preliminary finals. In late 2014, Eade was appointed coach of the AFL's expansion team on the Gold Coast taking over from Guy McKenna. Eade's time at the Suns was stormy at best and by the end of his third season, his contract would not be renewed. In this episode Eade opens up about his sackings at Sydney and Gold Coast, coaching the legendary Tony Lockett in Sydney and dealing with Jason Akermanis at the Western Bulldogs See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

It was a huge buzz to chat on Legends with Bevo recently with one of the real characters in footy, former Port Adelaide Football Club runner, David 'Arny' Arnfield. We spoke about the thrill of being the runner for the club that he barracked for as a kid, the secrets to Port's success over the years and what it was like being a runner for club greats like Jack Cahill, Mark Williams and Russell Ebert. Arny also spoke about stirring the pot with AFL legends Barry Hall and Tony Lockett during his time as a runner and his involvement with Leading Teams and being back at the PAFC. When it comes to footy, there isn't much Tezza hasn't done. From playing against Tony Lockett as a junior in Ballarat, through to playing and coaching in premierships, Tezza has pretty much done it all. However, it was in the Philippines where he reached true immortality when he coached the Philippine Eagles to their very first Asian Championships victory in 2016 as well as coaching the Eagles to a win in the Manila Cup in the same year.In this episode, Tezza brings a very unique perspective to the PAFL chat podcast as he talks through his footy career, how he got into coaching and then how he became a successful coach. Pies, Erik and The Producer are back to review 1996. Manly beat St George in the ARL Grand Final after one of the bigger blunders in GF history. Dragons fans will tell you it was the turning point. But did they really look like threatening Manly coming from 7th against the minor premiers? Sydney Swans gathered huge momentum in the AFL. Tony Lockett won the Coleman medal and the Swans made the Grand Final, ultimately losing to North Melbourne. Sri Lanka won the Cricket World Cup hosted by India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Australia made the final but they were no match for the co-hosts. Your memory may be of Kaluwitharana and Jayasuriya throwing the bat at everything. But was that actually the case? Atlanta hosted to Olympics. There were quite a few great performances. Michael Johnson and Marie-Jose Perec won 200m 400m doubles. Donovan Bailey won the 100m and in the pool Kieren Perkins overcame lane 8 to stun the swimming world. To say Ricky Nixon is one of the most polarising people in the modern history of the AFL would be an understatement. Ricky Nixon revolutionised the role of the player agent and represented the best of the best including Wayne Carey, Gary Ablett, Ben Cousins, Tony Lockett, and Matthew Richardson. Yet for all the highs in his 30 plus year career as a player and agent, there were the lows; lows of which he still get reminded of daily from an unforgiving public. Ricky Nixon joins host Chris Pepper for an chat about his thoughts on the current state of the game, the phone call that started his player agent career, the original 'Men For All Seasons' calendar and how it almost lost him a BMW, the toughest deal he participated in, who stuck by him and he calls friends, his stand-up comedy career, and much more. And wait until you hear from the member of the public who crashed our chat to tell us his thoughts on Ricky. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lace-out/message

Remember the AFL power forwards of the 1980s and 1990s? Tony Lockett, Jason Dunstall, Gary Ablett, Peter Sumich. Those were the days. But are these days coming back? We think the forward gorilla is returning and we explore why this is happening. How can we avoid serious injuries to players? Something needs to be done. What's happening at the Western Bulldogs kennel? Not. Happy. Luke. We review Round 2 and decide that this 2018 season is going to be even better than 2017, which was (except for the finals) one of the best. We also preview Round 3 and all the big things that you can expect to see. It will be one of the best. Predicted. Guaranteed. And our song of the week, Power to The People.
