Episode 20: For the Love of Our ChildrenWelcome to the final episode of our “for the love of” February series! For the Love of our Children! Today we welcome a champion for our youth. Uncle John Neptune, a tribal council member, father, and leader at the Penobscot Nation and beyond. The aunties spend time with John discussing our future generations, our commitment to their wellness and the love we hold for them. We take the conversation to many places. We discuss all things we hold responsibility for such as our children, animals, and the land we collectively share. We had so much fun with Uncle John, making it clear why our young people are so fortunate to have him in their lives! It's no secret that cities are generally perceived as spaces of little conservation relevance, yet local urban wildlife underpins a range of ecosystem services. In a time where rapid changes in the climate are causing more extreme natural events, wildlife is disappearing and we are becoming more and more disconnected from nature through urbanisation, could the recovery of urban ecosystems be a potential solution for a more resilient planet? In this episode, our host Ellie Darbey will discover how we can recover nature in our cities, with ZSL's experts in rewilding, reconnecting habitats and river restoration. Does the answer lie in empowering local communities? Or is it in the plight of the hedgehog? Dr Gavin Broad's love of nature was initially inspired by the birdlife of the Wirral. However, the summer lull in avian activity lead the 15-year-old Broad towards an interest in moths, and from there it was only a zombie caterpillar away from the creatures that were to inspire his professional identity and take him as far afield as Chile; Parasitoid wasps! “Darwin Wasps” account for 10% of all British insects - that's over 7000 distinct wasps - and Broad insists that everyone can easily “admire them, if not like them.” What's not to like about an insect that can inject its eggs through the bark of a tree and into another insect? Or one that can actively dictate the gender of its offspring to specifically regulate the extant population? Or one that can easily defeat a tarantula?! Quite. David heads to the Natural History Museum to talk Wasps, and to discuss Gavin's involvement in sequencing the genomes of 70,000 British species - everything from Deep Sea Squid to Pine Marten - his appreciation for the work of Damien Hirst and the similarities it bears to the NHM's hidden insect archives, and how we would all be far better off if we possessed the curiosity of bored Victorian clergymen. In this week's edition of We Love Outdoors with Rich Davenport, your humble host explores the regulatory proposals published in the NYS Register in support of the Deer Management Plan. Comment period on these regulatory proposals ends August 8, 2021. Also discussed are the newly proposed regulatory changes for Fisher and Pine Marten trapping, regulations whose public comment period ends 8/16. Our government is based upon citizen participation, and joining a federation conservation club, attending meetings, getting informed and get involved - write letters, send emails, speak with your elected representatives in support or opposition on issues that impact the wildlife, fisheries and our conservation traditions. Rich Davenport also explores the pending regulations concerning allowable activities on WMAs, F&WMAs, and some MUAs and UAs in NY. Conflicting activities are ongoing on these lands, which is concerning as WMAs and such are to offer wildlife a haven free from human disturbance and harrying when hunting and trapping seasons are closed. This includes reinforcing the leash laws, as dogs cannot be off leash unless engaged in hunting during an open season, or undergoing hunting training in designated areas. You're just walking Fido? ON A LEASH! Your humble host also provides you with updates to the youth hunting law progress, as well as some details from the June 2021 Erie County Federation of Sportsmen's Clubs meeting, as the lifting of the covid covid covid rules has brought the lifting of capacity limits, social distancing rules, and the need to pre-register for any event. Short notice to influence the Teach Me To Fish events, but National Hunting and Fishing Day will be full bore this year. Erie County Fair has also announced tickets will no longer be valid on specific days, tickets purchased in advance are good any day of the fair. Alternative energy is once again in the spotlight, as residents of Chautauqua County voice their concerns and opposition to the proposed Ripley to Barcelona industrial solar array project, opposition to expanded wind factory facilities and wind turbines in Lake Erie. Meanwhile, major hypocrisy was exposed in Buffalo Rising in an article concerning outer and inner harbor development and the lawsuit filed against the Erie County Harbor Development Corporation and their general project plans, using some of the identical environmental concerns as are held in opposition to wind turbines in freshwater. Perhaps Sierra Club and the other hypocrites are now seeing the light and stand to protect lake Erie vs. destroy her? We shall see. Finally, if you think NY is goofy, check out Arizona and their recent actions to ban use of trail cameras for scouting for the hunt. Eyes wide open, folks, as these things have a funny way of moving from west to east! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/rich-davenport/support

From the importance of woodland management, to the vitality deriving from a community’s support (or ‘Meithal’ in Gaelic). These woodlands have proved a bottomless source of Wisdom; knowledge otherwise hidden in the secret pollen records of nearby peat bogs. With only 2% of Ancient Native Woodland remaining in Ireland, Richard is preserving this heritage for generations to come. Richard and David discuss the catharsis of woodchopping against Seasonal Affective Disorder, the value of peat, how the Pine Marten is in cahoots with the Red Squirrels against the Greys, and how Ireland has recently seen the return of Woodpeckers, White-tailed Eagles and even the occasional lesser-spotted human who places value upon nature and woodland. Oxygen on comet 67P Molecular oxygen (O2) detected on comet Churymov-Gerasimenko 67P, has scientists baffled. Current models of the formation of our Solar System do not predict conditions that would allow for O2. Bees and antimicrobial drugs The antibacterial properties of honey have been exploited for thousands of years, but now scientists at the University of Cardiff are using honeybees to collect and identify plant-derived drugs which could be used to treat antibiotic resistant hospital pathogens. By screening honey for these plant compounds and identifying the plant through the pollen grains in the honey, researchers can narrow down the active ingredients and even exploit this to get bees to make medicinal honey. Reproducibility of science experiments A lot of science experiments, when redone, produce different result. Professor Dorothy Bishop chaired a report, out this week, on reproducibility in science. She explains why reproducibility is important, why failures are due to many factors beyond fraud, and how measures, such as pre-registration and collaboration on large expensive experiments, can help make science more robust and repeatable. Reintroduction of beavers In National Mammal Week and the Mammal Society UK is giving a whole day of its national conference at Exeter University over to the reintroduction of European beavers. In February last year a group of beavers were spotted apparently having been living and breeding on the River Otter in Devon for quite some time. By March this year an attempt by DEFRA to remove them had been challenged by local campaigners and now a 5 year watch period has been set up over which time the effects of the beavers on the ecosystem will be monitored. But how might the renegade rodents have been influencing the ecosystem? And with another project currently underway to reintroduce the Pine Marten, a large relative of the weasel, to Wales is there a new public focus on mammal reintroductions in the UK? Could the return of the Pine Marten mean the end of the Grey Squirrel takeover? Tom Heap examines emerging evidence that where Pine Marten populations are healthy, Grey Squirrel numbers crash and native Red Squirrels increase. Tom meets the researchers who found the connection in Ireland, and who are now investigating whether it's also happening in Scotland. The Pine Marten is itself recovering from years of persecution and is still only found in tiny pockets of England and Wales. If the Pine Marten really is the saviour of the Red Squirrel there could be an added incentive for its reintroduction. Presenter: Tom Heap Producer: Sarah Swadling.
