Today on the Dads with Daughters Podcast, we bring you father of five, past New York Life Insurance Company President and author Fred Sievert. We talk to Fred Sievert about fatherhood, living in a multi-generational home and how to support our daughters in their careers. We also talk to Fred Sievert about his brand new book, Fast Starting a Career of Consequence. Fred Sievert is the former president of New York Life Insurance Company and in his work he gained a ton of experience that allowed him to better understand career transitions. In his book, Sievert shares five biblical principles chosen to help individuals create a strong foundation for fulfillment in their careers. Then, he elaborates on 10 practical and proven strategies that individuals can implement immediately to gain visibility and early success as they enter the workforce for the first time, move to a new company or re-enter the workforce after a period of absence. “The advice applies equally well to small or large corporations and to entrepreneurial ventures,” he said, adding, “The book was inspired by a request for advice from my daughter on how to be identified as a high potential employee and advance her career as she languished in an entry-level position at her large global company. The advice proved to be very effective as she was rapidly promoted into positions with greater levels of responsibility.” Chapters explore universal career-relevant topics such as: Demonstrating Commitment; Embracing the Company's Vision and Mission; Developing Cultural and Organizational Awareness; Understanding the Financial Underpinnings of the Business; Demonstrating Strategic Thinking Capability; Over-preparing for Every Meeting; Making Every Presentation a Command Performance; and Balancing Faith, Family and Career. Saying "no" is an essential skill that plays a significant role in our personal and professional lives. It is crucial because it allows us to establish boundaries, prioritize our well-being, and maintain control over our time and energy. By saying "no" when necessary, we can avoid overcommitment, burnout, and resentment towards others and ourselves. REWIND: In honor of Black history month, and this year's theme of resistance, we are revisiting past conversations with guests committed to the active and everyday work of resisting racism and the false ideology of white supremacy. We sat down with Rev. Dr. Jacqueline J. Lewis, Senior Minister at Middle Collegiate Church, a 1,300-member multi-ethnic, welcoming, and inclusive congregation in New York City (and full disclosure, my home church, loves!) for a conversation which delved into: - The need for each of us to make anti-racism a daily practice. - Rooting our minds and spirits in revolutionary love. - The challenging joy of leading a diverse church that is radically inclusive and leaves no one out regardless of race, sexuality / gender identity or ability. - Why one of the essential duties of church members is to push leaders towards anti-racist practices which go beyond the pews, and into our daily lives - the way we love, work, shop and come into community. Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis is a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, and earned her Ph.D. in Religion and Society/Psychology and Religion at Drew University. Ordained in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Dr. Lewis hosted “Just Faith,” an on-demand television program on MSNBC.com and is a frequent media commentator. Her books include: Fierce Love, The Power of Stories: A Guide for Leaders in Multi-racial, Multi-cultural Congregations, Ten Strategies for Becoming a Multiracial Congregation, and the children's book, You Are So Wonderful! This book is about how to get value from meetings. Period.Meetings, any kind of meeting, represent opportunity. And where there is an opportunity, value is available to be unlocked. When you view meetings as, ahem, a “necessary evil”, you would neither see nor exploit the hidden opportunities. There is no debate: you would be involved in very many meetings whether you like it or not! You might as well roll up your sleeves and optimise your involvement. This book would give you implementable strategies for excelling at meetings. This book has no fluff and fillers. The book goes straight to the point. The 70 personal strategies have been boiled down to convey the point as precisely as possible. I recognise that time is a scarce resource and I want to optimise your reading time. Our guest this week is Jessica Kahn, MD, MPH. Dr. Kahn brings us a powerful list outlining ten key strategies for success in an academic career. Long time listeners will know that we love lists here on the Faculty Factory Podcast and we have a great treat for our audience today. While today's presentation is geared a lot towards more junior level faculty, there are nuggets in this conversation that can benefit those at any stage of their career. Dr. Kahn serves as Division Director of Adolescent Medicine and Associate Chair of Academic Affairs and Career Development at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center in Ohio. “The first strategy for success is to create an individual development plan and a developmental network plan,” she told us. “I really think that those are roadmaps for our success as faculty.” As outlined in today's discussion, having an individual development plan or an IDP empowers us to take ownership of our own career development. There is no question that by following the strategies as presented in this masterful talk from Dr. Kahn, our faculty will be on the path towards building that much needed resiliency to achieve their career goals. "When we have plenty of energy and we know how to protect it and nourish it and grow it, we stop doing things like procrastination, avoidance, distractions, worry, stress, and more" A conversation sparked on Instagram inspired this week's episode, get ready to implement one of these ten ideas today on how to protect and safeguard your energy! Not knowing how to protect your energy and nourish it on a regular basis in a healthy way is what leads to burnout in people's lives. It's what leads to exhaustion. Learning how to safeguard your energy means that you have plenty of mental and emotional reserves - so you have more of yourself to give to others, to the people that you want to give to, and it also stops things when we have plenty of energy and we know how to protect it and nourish it and grow it. It's a way to safeguard your mental and emotional reserves, right? So you have more of yourself to give to the people you want to give to. This is an exciting practice and shift in mindset. You get to create a new story. Try it! One day when you go out, see how you feel when you come back and do it another day without doing it and see how you feel. I promise you this stuff works. [00:01 - 08:33] What is Energy • We are energetic beings in physical form. • Everything in this world is made up of energy. • Physical objects, thoughts and feelings is also energy, but it's a different type of energy. • Our emotional mental energy is connected to our physical energy and vice versa. • To shift our emotions and our mental state, we have to move our bodies. [08:33 - 16:35] How to Protect Your Energy and Nourish It • Learning how to protect your energy means having plenty of mental and emotional reserves, so you have more of yourself to give to others. • Energy leaks can look like procrastination, avoidance, distraction, worry, stress, et cetera. • One way to stop energy leaks is by setting boundaries. [16:36 - 24:37] Boundaries and Triggers • Setting boundaries on TV shows or dramas that are based on real life triggering events. • Cluttered spaces and workarounds to solve family clutter. [24:38 - 33:04] How to Delegate and Outsource Tasks That Drain You • To be a successful mom, you need to understand your triggers and set up systems that work for all of you. • Understanding your money drains can help you figure out what's most important to you and delegate or outsource those tasks accordingly. • It's important to have a clear understanding of your priorities so you can live life in a way that is both nourishing and enjoyable. [33:05 - 41:55] Building energy • Take care of your own energy in order to be able to give more to others. • Self-criticism, self-hatred, and self-judgment can drain one's energy. • Doing things that one loves in order to build one's energy. • Authentic relationships in order to feel safe and secure. Go on your LinkedIn profile and upload a header graphic. This is the image that is behind your headshot at the top of your profile. You can take a photo off of your company's website, you can use a city scape, you can use a photo of you speaking at an event, but use that space to tell people something about you." MONA NEFF'S TIP FOR EMERGING SALES LEADERS: "Remember that LinkedIn is a relationship, not a one-night stand, and that you have to be in it for the long haul." ANN MARIE BEEBOUT'S TIP FOR EMERGING SALES LEADERS: "You need to have your featured section filled out. Make sure that you have some evergreen content in the featured section and maybe one recent post or article that you've put out, but give people the resources that they need to take the next step that you want them to take."
We live in a digital-centric world where we've, unfortunately, lost the art of effective communication. Today's communication channels have become increasingly volatile, uncertain, and complex, making it harder to collaborate and improve problem-solving within organisations. The pandemic certainly hasn't helped much either, but that doesn't negate the fact that effective communication is still one of the most crucial aspects of business success. As a leader, your ability to convey your message with meaning and purpose is extremely crucial in the workplace. Whether you're trying to communicate with a co-worker, the CEO, or an associate, you can take steps to influence others. But there is a problem; not many leaders know how to create a clear message and purpose. It's even more frustrating when leaders struggle to evaluate and tailor their communication to the proper occasion. If you ever want to capture attention and spark behavioral change, you must be able to influence emotion and motivate action. We've all seen great communicators in action. And what they usually do is they command a room and articulate a vision. But how do they manage to be so engaging and persuasive? In today's episode of the Made for More Podcast, Gary Edwards shares strategies for leaders and entrepreneurs on how to have trusted conversations with their colleagues, clients, customers, and prospects. When April Strong started teaching, she wanted to be the best. But it wasn’t until she started filming her own lessons and watching them back later at night that she was able to see exactly what she wanted to change about her practice. It was nerve-wracking at first, but over time, April began to love the growth that came from self-reflecting on her videos. “Any serious athlete watches footage of their performances — why not teachers, too?” she asks. In this interview, April shares why video is such a compelling self-reflection and coaching tool, and how she is using video to support teachers at Martin County School District in Florida, where she is now an instructional coach. And she has practical, simple steps to take for any school that is interested in taking the first step toward using video to support professional learning. Also, check out our interview with Dr. Jim Knight about using video to support teaching and instructional coaching in our podcast episode, “See Reality, Get Better.” Further Reading For more on this topic, check out this white paper: “Ten Strategies to Improve Teaching with Video.” It includes: Ten different ways video can be used to improve teaching practice Best practices for using video as a reflection and coaching tool Real-life examples of organizations that have successfully used video to support educator growth Tips for those new to using video in evaluation and professional development settings
