Ikonofag? Författaren Patrik Svensson berättar om begäret att äta bilder och varför det inte är så udda som det låter. Åsikter som uttrycks är skribentens egna.I en intervju i maj 2012, bara några månader innan han dog, berättade författaren och illustratören Maurice Sendak om hur han en gång fått ett brev. Brevet var från en liten pojke, kanske fyra eller fem år gammal, och innehöll en teckning. Pojken, han hette Jim, hade blivit så förtjust i Sendaks bok ”Till vildingarnas land” att han inspirerats att rita en egen bild. Pojkens mor hade skickat teckningen till Sendak.Och Maurice Sendak i sin tur blev minst lika förtjust. Rörd av gesten ritade han en egen liten teckning, av en av sina vildingar, och skickade i retur.Ett Maurice Sendak-original alltså. Bara för pojken. Något att rama in och i framtiden sälja på auktion.Några veckor senare fick Sendak ett nytt brev. Det var från pojkens mor. Hon tackade och förklarade, kanske lite förläget, att Jim hade älskat teckningen. Ja, han hade älskat teckningen så mycket att han, innan hon hann ingripa, hade stoppat den i munnen och ätit upp den.Det, förklarade Maurice Sendak, var det finaste beröm han någonsin fått. Pojken Jim hade alltså öppnat kuvertet, tagit upp teckningen, betraktat den och så instinktivt och förbehållslöst älskat den att han omedelbart stoppat den i munnen.Han såg den. Han älskade den. Han åt upp den.Varför gör man så?I boken ”Vitön” berättar Bea Uusma om hur hon vid ett tillfälle, ensam i en lässal på Kungliga biblioteket, sätter i sig en del av ett gammalt brev från Nils Strindberg. En bit papper som Nordpolenresenären en gång haft i sina händer och varsamt ritat sina tecken på. Den doftar salt och bränt. Hon försöker inte ens i efterhand förklara sin handling. Bara stoppar pappersbiten i munnen och sväljer.Varför gör man så?Vi skulle kunna kalla dem ikonofager. Pojken Jim och Bea Uusma. Det är väl egentligen inte ett ord, inte i ordböckernas värld i alla fall. Men det är den benämningen konsthistorikern Jeremie Koering använder i sin bok Iconophages. A history of ingesting images. En historik över att äta bilder.Den handlar alltså om denna besynnerliga sedvänja, att bokstavligen sätta i sig bilder. Avbildningar och representationer. Att äta upp teckningar, skulpturer, målningar, ikoner, fresker.Historien börjar i det gamla Egypten och rör sig genom antikens Grekland och det nykristna Europa, med pepparkakor och marsipangrisar som färdkost. Det är en märklig och rätt knepig historia men den som vill hitta någon slags röd tråd ser att det till stor del handlar om religion. Religiösa fresker och skulpturer som man kysst eller slickat på för att bli frisk från en åkomma, eller för att bara komma lite närmre Gud. Man har velat få i sig något heligt, velat inkorporera det i sin kropp, för att på så sätt bli ett med detta heliga. Det ser måhända märkligt ut men är inte så svårt att förstå. Jesus, för att ta ett av många gudomliga exempel, dog för våra synder, han upplät sin kropp åt oss, offrade den åt oss. Den som tar emot hans frälsning tar också på något sätt emot hans kropp, förenas med den. Kyrkans oblater. Jesu kött. Vinet som egentligen är blod. Man vill in i såret, man vill in i Jesu kropp, för att, som PO Enquist skrev, hans kärlek är fylld av blodets ljuva smak. Man vill smaka på Jesus, bokstavligen. Det är väl begripligt.Men riktigt intressant blir det kanske först när vi rör oss utanför den religiösa sfären. När någon stoppar i sig en bild enbart för att den är så oemotståndligt vacker eller sublim, när man gör det inte för att bli ett med något gudomligt, utan för att förenas med konsten själv.Det är då bildätandet blir ett uttryck för ett slags inlevelse. Ett försök att bli ett med konsten. Att uppleva den med alla sina sinnen. Att förenas med den. Sven Lindqvist skrev om det i boken ”Myten om Wu Tao-tzu”. Om hur det handlar om att låta fiktion och verklighet förenas. Konsten, hävdade han, ”är bara ett guldstoft penslat över verkligheten för att fixera den.” Därunder finns alltid en verklig människa, där finns kött och blod. Och man kan ju tänka sig att den som på riktigt vill uppleva ett konstverk, på djupet förstå det, vill komma nära detta kött och blod. Vill smaka på det, förenas med det. Man äter en bild. Man uppgår i den. Man blir konst själv. Det är ett begär som går bortom förstånd och rationalitet.”Bara riktigt små barn”, skrev Sven Lindqvist, ”brukar förstå vad det gäller.”Och barnsligheten i det hela, det instinktiva orala begäret, är också något Jeremie Koering är inne på. Den som stoppar i sig en bild anammar barnets sätt att förhålla sig till världen. Barnet som är oförmöget att kritiskt reflektera kring sina egna handlingar. Barnet som är ett offer för sina instinkter, som gör utan att tänka.Och det kan väl vara sant, men jag tänker att det kanske också handlar om ett försök att nå ett slags förhöjt medvetande. Om medvetandet, som filosofen Thomas Nagel menade, först och främst är ett tillstånd, den subjektiva upplevelsen av det som omger oss. Om medvetandet är ett slags utbyte mellan våra sinnen, ja, då är det kanske inte så konstigt om vi ibland vill uppleva världen med så många sinnen som möjligt. När vi verkligen berörs, då räcker det inte med att bara se, eller höra, man vill också lukta, känna, smaka. Man vill nå en medvetandets fullkomlighet.Ja, det är väl i alla fall en vacker tanke. Möjligen naiv. Att det handlar om ett slags värdering av de konstnärliga tingen som går bortom det monetära eller intellektuella. Att konsten tillåts utlösa rent kroppsliga behov. Som om vi behövde den för att leva.Man kan ju fundera över vad den där Maurice Sendak-teckningen som pojken Jim satte i sig hade varit värd idag. Jag efterforskar saken lite och ser att auktionsfirman Christies år 2025 sålde en enkel blyertsteckning av Sendak, på ett gulnat och delvis sönderrivet papper. Den gick för drygt sjuttontusen dollar.Jag tittar på teckningen. Den föreställer två vildingar. Den ene sitter och läser en bok. Den andre sitter bredvid med en hel boktrave framför sig, armarna höjda med en kniv och en gaffel i varje hand, tungan hungrigt utstickande ur mungipan, redo att sätta i sig hela högen.Det är en otroligt charmig bild. Rerun: James Christie held his first auction on 5th December, 1766 - billed as a sale of “genuine household furniture, jewels, plate, firearms, china and a large quantity of madeira and high flavoured claret” belonging to a “Noble Personage (deceased)”. His auction-house, Christie's, went on to become one of the world's leading dealers of fine art. But it took Christie many years to exploit this opportunity, which he accomplished partly by leveraging well-connected friends. His milieu included Richard Tattersall, Thomas Chipperfield, Thomas Gainsborough, Horace Walpole, Joshua Reynolds and David Garrick - a ‘Who's Who' of 18th century London once known as ‘Christie's Fraternity of Godparents'.
