Our progress through the Peschel Press annotated Christies continue. Today, we takedown “Crime Does Not Pay,” an adaptation of “Murder on the Links” from “Les Petits Meurtres d'Agatha Christie.” It's set at a nightclub, there are more murders (including dogicide!), Inspector Swan gets investigated, Alice gets cut in half, and Marlene gets harassed. But otherwise, it's just like the novel!Teresa Peschel, author of "Agatha Christie, She Watched" and the "International Agatha Christie, She Watched," hosts our livestream. Joining Teresa is her husband, technical adviser, and straight man, Bill Peschel. Together, they are Peschel Press, publisher of intriguing, intelligent, and idiosyncratic books (www.peschelpress.com).

The Epstein files has raised big questions beyond politics, Sunday explores the moral dimension of the latest revelations. Documents reveal that in 2017 the financier and convicted paedophile was sent fragments of a cloth used to cover the Kaaba - also known as the House of God - in the Great Mosque of Mecca. Edward Stourton discusses the revelation with Leicester imam Sheik Ibrahim Mogra. A hammer price of 23 million dollars is quite a lot to pay for a small chalk drawing of a foot. Michelangelo sketch was part of a study for the magnificent Sistine Chapel fresco. Jarda Da-man, a specialist in Old Masters at Christies, describes it for the Sunday audience. The BAFTA awards are a fortnight away and the documentary 'Apocalypse in the Tropics' is in the running. It is a story of religion and right-wing politics set in Brazil, and focuses on the rule of Jair Bolsonaro, who was the country's president from 2019 until 2023, before he was replaced by President Lula da Silva. Petra Costa directed the film and details the rise in evangelical Christianity against the setting of Brazilian politics.Presenter: Edward Stourton Producers: Bara'atu Ibrahim & Katy Booth Studio Managers: Lynsey Akehurst & Phillip Halliwell Editor: Tim Pemberton

Bastian Pastewka präsentiert: Der verräterische Garten Von Agatha Christie Mit Felix von Manteuffel, Friedhelm Ptok, Susanne Heydenreich, Leslie Malton, Udo Schenk u.a. Regie: Stefan Hilsbecher SWR/MDR 2006 Podcast-Tipp: ARD Radio Tatort https://1.ard.de/radiotatort

Time for some radio gold...or silver? Christina Trevanion is an internationally-recognised jewellery expert whose work as an auctioneer has led her to a sparkling role presenting TV antiques shows like Antiques Road Trip, Bargain Hunt and Flog It. After studying Fine Art at University, Christina worked at Christies in London before setting up her own auction house in her home county of Shropshire. So, let's see what musical treasures she can offer us in today's Inheritance Tracks...
ART ELEVATES YOU EVERY DAY. Cécile Verdier is President of Christie's France. She graduated from Sciences Po and Art History at Paris IV, before spending 4 years at Christie's as Head of Valuations then moving to the 20th Century department, in parallel of taking the hammer for Christie's France since the inauguration sale in 2001. From 2008 to 2018, she was heading the 20th Century Design Department globally at Sotheby's and Vice President of the French office at the end of her tenure. In 2019, she came back to Christie's as President for France. “An auction house is rightly called a house, not an auction company. We are a home.” “You can hear English being spoken all over the city. Paris definitely became more international.” “There are no bad questions. “How much do you think it will cost?” is always a good question to ask.”
Tamara de Lemicka was a trailblazer with an incredible, fresh style that really defined and influenced the development of Art Deco. CHANGING TASTE AND VALUE. Jussi Pylkkänen is now an independent art advisor. After 38 years of service, his career at Christies culminated in the global presidency of the auction house. Among his many outstanding achievements, in 2017 he was the auctioneer at the sale of the world's most expensive painting, Leonardo da Vinci's Salvator Mundi, sold at auction at in New York for $450,312,500, a new record price for any artwork which is likely to stand for many decades. “Art is the esssence of humanity.” “As I brought the hammer down on Salvator Mundi I was conscious that that one last bid, at an extra $30 million, was the equivalent of the total price of the Van Gogh Sunflowers, the painting and price that had transformed the art market forever in 1987.” “I will be back auctioneering alongside my art advisory. The two will go hand in hand.”

Rerun: James Christie held his first auction on 5th December, 1766 - billed as a sale of “genuine household furniture, jewels, plate, firearms, china and a large quantity of madeira and high flavoured claret” belonging to a “Noble Personage (deceased)”. His auction-house, Christie's, went on to become one of the world's leading dealers of fine art. But it took Christie many years to exploit this opportunity, which he accomplished partly by leveraging well-connected friends. His milieu included Richard Tattersall, Thomas Chipperfield, Thomas Gainsborough, Horace Walpole, Joshua Reynolds and David Garrick - a ‘Who's Who' of 18th century London once known as ‘Christie's Fraternity of Godparents'. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly explain how Christie innovated public viewings, product placement and sales technique; connect the dots between the French Revolution and Christie's biggest successes; and reveal how much it costs to buy a two-headed taxidermied lamb… Further Reading: • ‘James Christie: the eloquent auctioneer' (Royal Academy of Arts, 2016): https://www.royalacademy.org.uk/article/james-christie-eloquent-auctioneer • ‘Mr Christie, before Christie's… His early days' (Artprice, 2021): https://www.artprice.com/artmarketinsight/mr-christie-before-christies-his-early-days • ‘Welcome to Christie's' (Christies, 2016): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sZ2kq20kK5U ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Join The Cozy Mystery Book Club, Kelly Reynolds, and Angela Maria Hart for their discussion of Dead and Gondola (Christie Bookshop Book One) by Ann Claire. When a mysterious bookshop visitor dies under murderous circumstances, the Christie sisters and their cat Agatha call on all they've learned about solving mysteries from their favorite novelist in this new series debut. Ellie Christie is thrilled to begin a new chapter. She's recently returned to her tiny Colorado hometown to run her family's historic bookshop with her elder sister, Meg, and their friendly bookshop cat, Agatha. Perched in a Swiss-style hamlet accessible by ski gondola and a twisty mountain road, the Book Chalet is a famed bibliophile destination known for its maze of shelves and relaxing reading lounge with cozy fireside seats and panoramic views. At least, until trouble blows in with a wintery whiteout. A man is found dead on the gondola, and a rockslide throws the town into lockdown—no one in, no one out. He was a mysterious stranger who visited the bookshop. At the time, his only blunders were disrupting a book club and leaving behind a first-edition Agatha Christie novel, written under a pseudonym. However, once revealed, the man's identity shocks the town. Many residents knew of him. Quite a few had reason to want him dead. Others hide secrets. The police gather suspects, but when they narrow in on the sisters' close friends, the Christies have to act. Although the only Agatha in their family tree is their cat, Ellie and Meg know a lot about mysteries, and they're not about to let the situation snowball out of control. The Christie sisters must summon their inner Miss Marples and trek through a blizzard of clues before the killer turns the page to their final chapter.
