Kia ora e te whanāu. Please join Matt in welcoming the new co-hosts of Dirt Church Radio, Ali Pottinger and Andrew McDowall. Both have been regulars on DCR for some time now, so it should be little surprise that Matt would reach out to them to join him in the next chapter of Aotearoa's third favourite forest-based running podcast. Both bring a wealth of experience to the table, are community-minded, and love a good yarn. This is going to be sweet-as. This week we learn a bit about Ali and Andrew's backstory, what they are excited about, the races they've run, and their upcoming jaunts to the Snowy Mountains. Ali and Matt are heartened that Andrew may just be human after all, how much it sucks to run a marathon, and why Andrew would even need microspikes to run Coast to Kosci, he's an Aucklander. Kia ora e te whānau! On this episode of the DCR AidStation we are back with two of our favourite coaches and the brains behind SQUADRUN, Ali Pottinger and Kerry Suter. The famous saying “Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face” rings true with running. In fact, one could argue that 99% of our races have an element of the uncontrollable, but we are not going to talk about this. We are going to focus when we've become our own Mike Tyson, and punched ourselves in the face. We rip through the gamut of bugger-ups, from the structural to digital, and how once you've dug the hole, jumped in, and covered yourself with dirt, how to drag yourself back out. Despite challenging conditions in financial markets the world over, ambitious entrepreneurs find a way. There are few sectors where that is more true than in agriculture, and despite the industry's reputation for convention and conservatism, challenging times call for creative measures, and farmers are nothing if not creative. To learn more about innovative farm business models and the cutting edge of farm financial strategies, we invited Quint Pottinger, Owner of Affinity Farms in Kentucky, USA. Quint is not only bringing in hedge fund investors, he's selling all his crops– corn, soybeans, wheat, and rye– into specialty markets and finding hefty premiums for doing so, all while improving his local community's sustainability and creating a transformed future food system where his farm will thrive. For more information and resources, visit our website. Itamar Marcus, Founder and director of Palestinian Media Watch I spoke with Itamar Marcus about the realities on the ground involving the Palestinians, their overwhelming support for Hamas, the false distinctions between Hamas on the one hand and the Palestinian authority on the other, and the extent to which efforts to suggest that there has been unifying of these jihadist organizations is both false and misleading, especially as it relates to the idea that Israel has partners for peace with whom a Palestinian state can be safely entrusted. Matthew Pottinger, Distinguished Visiting Fellow at The Hoover Institution I spoke with Matthew Pottinger about the prospects that the Chinese Communist Party will launch a civil war, as some say Xi Jinping puts it, with Taiwan and may bring it to our own shores as part of a strategy of, well, distracting, disabling, and perhaps destroying this country, which also happens to be a principal goal of Xi Jinping. We also talked about a new book, The Boiling Moat, and what it suggests we need to do to deter such action by the CCP. George Rasley, Editor of Conservative HQ I spoke with George Rasley about Kamala Harris, the lies that she has been telling about herself and her record, and the lies that she is being helped in perpetrating the gaslighting, in fact, of the American people by a highly weaponized leftist media to the detriment of the truth and also the American people's understanding of the woman, her policy predilections, and her fitness for office. We also discussed the mistreatment of Benjamin Netanyahu in the course of her visit with him last week and the importance of the speech he made to the American people, telling the truth about Iran and Israel's war not only for its own survival but for our vital security interests as well.
Matt Pottinger used to cover China for Reuters and The Wall Street Journal before working as a deputy national security advisor for the Trump administration. Now, he's edited a new book called The Boiling Moat: Urgent Steps to Defend Taiwan. In today's episode, Pottinger speaks with NPR's Steve Inskeep about the global fallout that could result from China annexing Taiwan and the military strategy he thinks the U.S., Australia and other countries should implement to prevent a larger conflict from breaking out.To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy
Matt Pottinger, who served as deputy national security advisor under former President Trump, talks to Margaret Hoover about the geopolitical and economic stakes of defending Taiwan and the challenge of deterring China. Pottinger, editor and co-author of “The Boiling Moat: Urgent Steps to Defend Taiwan,” assesses Xi Jinping's ambitions and timeline for a potential invasion, and he details what the U.S. and Taiwan need to do to prevent it. He explains how the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza are connected to Taiwan and rebuts arguments that an aggressive policy toward Beijing could accidentally provoke a war. He also defends his view that COVID-19 was the result of a lab leak in Wuhan and criticizes those in the scientific community who refused to consider the theory. Pottinger, who resigned from the Trump White House after January 6th, comments on Trump's ambiguous Taiwan policy, his flattery of dictators, and whether Xi Jinping would prefer to see Trump or Biden in office in 2025. Support for “Firing Line for Margaret Hoover” is provided by Robert Granieri, Henry & Vanessa Cornell, The Fairweather Foundation, and Al & Kathy Hubbard. Corporate funding is provided by Stephens Inc.
In just a few short years, the United States' China policy has undergone nothing short of a revolution. Few people have been more central to that shift than Matt Pottinger. He was a reporter in China for Reuters and The Wall Street Journal, then a U.S. Marine, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan. He went on to become the top policymaker on Asia and the deputy national security adviser in the Trump administration. Pottinger argues in a new essay for Foreign Affairs that even though Washington's China strategy has already gotten much tougher, it still has a ways to go—to take on more risk and lay out a clear, if radical, goal for the kind of China the United States wants to see. His views are a window into what China policy might look like if Donald Trump returns to the White House.
