“Hacks on Taps” political guru, Mike Murphy, talks about growing up in Detroit, studying ads, becoming a political consultant by being the only one to raise his hand, starting political pacs, being on the outs with the current Republican party, what the Dems should do to win a bigger percentage of the vote, how buying an EV can really help America, being a Republican in Blue Los Angeles, and secret Republicans in Hollywood whispering that they were conservative! Bio: Mike Murphy is one of the Republican Party's most successful political media consultants, having handled strategy and advertising for more than 26 successful gubernatorial and Senatorial campaigns, including 12 wins in “blue” states that have consistently voted Democratic in Presidential elections, running successful gubernatorial campaigns for Mitt Romney, Jeb Bush, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Christie Whitman (NJ), Tommy Thompson (WI), John Engler (MI), Terry Branstad (IA) along with many other GOP Senators and Members of Congress. In 2024 Murphy founded the EV Politics Project, an organization focused on breaking down the growing partisan divide over Electric Vehicles. Murphy has worked on five GOP Presidential campaigns, and in 2000 was a key strategist for Sen John McCain's “Straight Talk Express” campaign. He also advises several Fortune 500 corporations, as well as several Hedge Funds and Trade Associations. In 2020 he served as a key strategist for Republican Voters Against Trump. Murphy is also a widely quoted pundit; he wrote the popular “Murphy's Law” column for TIME and is a longtime senior analyst for NBC News and MSNBC. He also co-hosts the popular podcast “Hacks on Tap” with his longtime friend David Axelrod. He also serves as co-director of the Center for the Political Future at USC and was a longtime senior fellow at Harvard's Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs. Murphy also works as a writer and producer in the entertainment industry with projects at HBO, CBS and 20th Century Fox Studios. In 2021 he wrote and created the CBS network pilot “Ways & Means” starring Patrick Dempsey. Murphy was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended the Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University. He lives with his wife Tiffany and daughter Audrey in Los Angeles. The GOP presidential candidate gushed about Arnold Palmer's hog. Trump's lame McDonald's photo opportunity fell flat as the orange rapey former guy doled out fries, to prescreened, fake customers. Vice President Kamala Harris raised more money than man-baby in September. Wee brained MAGATS were upsety-pants because Captain Handmaid's Tale, AKA J.D. Vance, blathered nice things about Governor Brian Kemp of Georgia. The turkey-bod authoritarian of the platform formerly known as Twitter, Elon Musk accused the media of encouraging folks to kill him. A Florida official resigned from the DeSantis regime rather than threaten TV stations that ran pro-choice ads. Former Thanksgiving dinner guest of Diaper Don, evil anti-Semite Nick Fuentes hoped a Harris presidency would lead to a fascist takeover. Wish.com Wolverine, AKA Senator Ted Cruz can't get a publication to endorse his reelection bid. The Republic of Louisiana wants to the Ten Commandments posted on the walls of its schools. The diddling woman-hating Catholics won't be spending bigly in the 2024 election because they think Trump will lose.

3205 - How Luddites Showed Us The Politics Of Machinery w/ Brian Merchant

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Brian Merchant, tech columnist at the Los Angeles Times, to discuss his recent book Blood in the Machine:The Origins of the Rebellion Against Big Tech. First, Sam runs through updates on Israeli operations in Gaza as 2 million Palestinians remain stuck in a terrorized blackout, external (and internal) calls for ceasefire, UAW's record contracts, and Donald Trump's candidacy, before watching Hunter Professor Rosalind Petchesky's reflections from Friday's Jewish Voices for Peace protest in Grand Central. Brian Merchant then joins, diving right into the misrepresentation of the Luddites in mass culture – largely expressing their aversion to technology as a problem of intelligence or conservatism, rather than their actual ideology, which objected to technology's role in increasing (rather than decreasing) labor exploitation in industrializing England. Stepping back, Merchant then contextualizes the rise of Luddism in the 18th Century, walking through the particularly rapid mechanization of the textile and cloth industries, bolstered by increasing cotton production from the slave trade in North America, and the complete alignment of the Crown with the Capitalists' decision to leverage technological development for themselves, and against labor, consumers, and community. Next, Merchant dives into the story of George Meller to paint a picture of the climax of the Luddite movement at the turn of the 19th Century, as, despite their best efforts, the 1800s see even more anti-labor automatization, pushing their tactics from disruption to destruction, only for violent pushback from the Crown and dwindling public support to eventually crush the movement. Wrapping up, Merchant explores the legacy of the Luddite movement, both as a foreshadowing of the role of the state in labor disputes, and in putting forward the blueprint for the militant unionism we see carried out by the most successful labor coalitions of today. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch Netanyahu update the public on Israel's ground operation in Gaza with an unsurprisingly genocidal allegory, and explore the diverse array of dehumanizing reactions to the conflict among Democratic figures – from Fetterman and Gottheimer to Jake Tapper. They also discuss Mike Pence's failure to hang with the GOP Presidential hopefuls, and DeSantis' attack on Pro-Palestine college voices, plus, your calls and IMs! Happy Monday! The whole MR Crew is back! Sam and Emma speak with James Tabery, professor in Philosophy at the University of Utah, to discuss his recent book Tyranny of the Gene: Personalized Medicine and Its Threat to Public Health. First, Sam runs through updates on a US deal with Iran, the House GOP's impending government shutdown, Drew Barrymore officially un-resuming her show (making Bill Maher the biggest SAG Scab), and progressive action in the US, before diving into the UAW's ongoing strike and the unconditional support coming in from the White House. James Tabery then joins, diving right into his personal experience working with and within the Personalized Medicine industry, and seeing how it can (with great expense) help patients, before stepping back to analyze the greater history of precision (personal) and genomic medicine over the last three decades, with the evolution of the Human Genome Project, and the rise of Human Genome Institute figurehead Francis Collins to the director of the National Health Institute. Briefly, he then discusses Obama's Precision Medicine Initiative. Professor Tabery then walks Sam and Emma through the complicated drive behind the personalized medicine movement, with real believers (like Collins) used as lynchpins by the Healthcare and Pharmaceutical industries that would profit from a hyper-individualized and cure-based philosophy to medicine over a preventative and environmental-based one, before looking at how this has also resulted in a politicization of environmental considerations in medicine, and why – despite existing proof of environmental contributions to countless health issues – the US healthcare system remains far behind researching and addressing these problems. Wrapping up, Professor Tobery parses through the influence of this debate when it comes to research on race-based genomes for issues that could likely result from environmental factors. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch the Auto Industry leadership attempt to undermine UAW after the union essentially kept the industry alive in the wake of the 2008 Financial Crisis, also expanding on Biden's support for the UAW and the inverse being expressed by GOP Presidential hopefuls. Rylie from West Philly and Corey on I-80 expand on the union discussion, the MR Crew discusses the unsurprising Russell Brand news (and those that came to his defense), and Teacher James from Iowa discusses the epidemic of anti-LGBTQ outing laws. Ronald Raygun gives his perspective on the positive impact on unions, plus, your calls and IMs! This week on the Mark Levin Show, President Biden is the ringmaster and the crook, not Hunter Biden, and has spent his entire life as a liar. Biden has his Politburo running the government and pushing our country over the edge, while the “Never Trumpers” are helping him along while claiming to be Constitutionalists. The Democrat party must be effectively dismantled and neutered, or else their anti-American agenda will be implemented to the point of being permanent. Also, a private jet carrying Wagner group bosses was shot out of the sky with a missile, killing all passengers on board. This is exactly how Vladimir Putin takes out his opponents, and this was to be expected after they had marched on Moscow with 10,000 troops. Putin is a former KGB assassin, and this is right out of their playbook. After the first GOP Presidential debate, Vivek Ramaswamy is the toughest to unravel because he is essentially a blank slate with little to no record to back what he claims he will do. On Thursday's Mark Levin Show, after the first GOP Presidential debate, Vivek Ramaswamy is the toughest to unravel because he is essentially a blank slate with little to no record to back what he claims he will do. We can't have someone who says they will lead a revolution if they have never stepped on the playing field, because talk can only get you so far. Ron DeSantis made a strong case for what he would do on the Federal level because of what he has done as Governor of Florida, especially with the Covid pandemic and firing Soros prosecutors. DeSantis won the debate last night because he has the evidence to show that when he says he will do something, he does it. Donald Trump is nothing like Vivek Ramaswamy because Trump got involved in Conservative causes and spoke to groups like the Tea Party before running for President, and turned that into action once he became President, which is why a lot of people liked him and still like him as the GOP nominee. Also, Democrats have made a disgraceful spectacle out of Donald Trump's indictments, especially with Trump's booking at the Fulton County jail in Georgia. Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis is using the law to break the law, forcing Trump to go through all of this just to get a mugshot. The problem is not any of the charges or investigations, which are absurd on their face, but what all of this has done to our country. Democrats are destroying this Republic, colluding and conspiring to drop indictments all over the place; how are Republicans ever supposed to win if they get away with this.
