An enthralling tour of the world's rarest and most endangered languages Languages and cultures are becoming increasingly homogenous, with the resulting loss of a rich linguistic tapestry reflecting unique perspectives and ways of life. Rare Tongues: The Secret Stories of Hidden Languages (Princeton University Press, 2025) tells the stories of the world's rare and vanishing languages, revealing how each is a living testament to human resilience, adaptability, and the perennial quest for identity. Taking readers on a captivating journey of discovery, Lorna Gibb explores the histories of languages under threat or already extinct as well as those in resurgence, shedding light on their origins, development, and distinctive voices. She travels the globe—from Australia and Finland to India, the Canary Islands, Namibia, Scotland, and Paraguay—showing how these languages are not mere words and syntax but keepers of diverse worldviews, sites of ethnic conflict, and a means for finding surprising commonalities. Readers learn the basics of how various language systems work—with vowels and consonants, whistles and clicks, tonal inflections, or hand signs—and how this kaleidoscope of self-expression carries vital information about our planet, indigenous cultures and tradition, and the history and evolution of humankind. Rare Tongues is essential reading for anyone concerned about the preservation of endangered languages and an eloquent and disarmingly personal meditation on why the world's linguistic heritage is so fundamental to our shared experience—and why its loss should worry us all. Lorna Gibb is associate professor of creative writing and linguistics at the University of Stirling. Caleb Zakarin is editor at the New Books Network. Learn more about your ad choices. In this special deep-dive episode, we explore the extraordinary story of Gilbert O'Sullivan, the iconic Irish singer-songwriter who defined an era of melodic, thoughtful 1970s pop. From humble beginnings in Waterford, Ireland, and later Swindon, England, young Raymond O'Sullivan dreamed of creating music that was both emotionally honest and musically timeless. What he achieved went beyond even his wildest dreams. We trace Gilbert's transformation from a quiet, artistic boy into the global pop sensation known for timeless hits like “Alone Again (Naturally),” “Clair,” “Get Down,” and “Nothing Rhymed.” Along the way, he invented a persona all his own—complete with a schoolboy haircut, flat cap, and short pants—that helped him stand out in an industry dominated by glam rock, heavy metal, and psychedelic bands. His look was quirky, but his sound was grounded in elegant piano pop and biting lyricism. He wasn't chasing fads—he was creating his own lane. We'll look at how Gilbert's early influences—from Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Fats Domino to the British Invasion bands like The Beatles and The Kinks—shaped his unique sound. You'll hear the story behind his breakout moment, how he almost gave up before finding success, and why “Alone Again (Naturally)” became one of the most impactful and controversial pop ballads of the '70s.We also dig into the often-overlooked second chapter of his career: the legal battles, the fight for artistic control, and his ongoing legacy as a fiercely independent songwriter who continues to tour and release new music decades after his biggest hits.Whether you're a lifelong fan, a 70s music aficionado, or just discovering Gilbert O'Sullivan for the first time, this episode is a heartfelt and eye-opening journey through one of pop music's most compelling careers.

"They will judge Masa to have been an extraordinarily consequential investor and historic figure in world investing and tech investing because he has made not just spectacular bets—but he's made so many people rich. I mean, with other people's money. All these founders, he's given them money, he's been an enormous disruptor, and he's built global businesses. He's built a huge business in Japan on the mobile operator. So for all these reasons, I know he sometimes feels dissatisfied with his legacy, and he's now trying to build his greatest legacy in the march to artificial general intelligence. Maybe the legacy will finally be judged by whether this bet pays off. What will his role be in the AI revolution? I would say to him, 'You've done pretty well so far.' " - Lionel Barber, author of "Gambling Man" Fresh out of the studio, Lionel Barber, former editor of the Financial Times and author of "Gambling Man" joined us in a conversation to unravel the enigmatic figure of Masayoshi Son, the CEO of SoftBank Group. We began with Lionel's career journey as the former editor of Financial Times and why inspired him to work on this book. We progressed how he put together a nuanced portrait of Masa as a resilient outsider whose Korean-Japanese heritage fueled his drive to succeed in Japan's stratified society and shared stories of Masa's evolution from software distributor to global tech investor with Vision Fund. Lionel explains how this "eternal optimist" has consistently ridden technological waves for four decades while making and losing billions. He unpacks Masa's unique investment philosophy of thinking big, his revolutionary $100 billion Vision Fund that disrupted venture capital norms, and his latest half-trillion-dollar bet on AI. Throughout the conversation, Lionel reveals the complexity behind the caricature, arguing that history will remember Masa as an extraordinarily consequential figure in global tech investing despite his mixed record of spectacular wins and losses. Episode Highlights: [00:46] Introduction to Lionel Barber and his book on Masayoshi Son [01:34] Lionel's journalism career origins [03:57] Key lessons from Lionel's career [05:25] What makes Masayoshi Son unique [06:33] The resilience behind Masa's character [07:49] The "Gambling Man" and core themes [10:38] Challenges in documenting Masa's story [13:07] How Masa's Korean heritage shaped him [15:49] Defining moments in Masa's business career [18:33] Evolution from software distributor to global tech conglomerate [22:21] Masa's dual roles: operator and investor [24:21] Understanding Masa's investment philosophy [31:30] How Masa changed tech investing [34:30] The hardest question about Masa [35:23] Masa's historical legacy [39:10] Closing remarks and book recommendations Profile: Lionel Barber, Author of "Gambling Man" LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/lionel-barber-473826135/ X: https://x.com/lionelbarber?lang=en BlueSky: https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:yv5ux5l7lcvmxexdswey5hqx Gambling Man Profile Page: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Gambling-Man/Lionel-Barber/9781668070741 FT Profile: https://www.ft.com/lionel-barber Podcast Information: Bernard Leong hosts and produces the show. Sometimes our secrets feel too big to share. We carry them for years—maybe even decades—believing no one could ever understand. But God knows. He sees the pain we hide and longs to guide us toward healing and freedom. In this week's episode, my dear friend Patty Barry courageously opens up about her abortion story. For years, she didn't know how to talk about it, carrying the weight of shame and silence. Yet God, in His grace, pursued her heart and brought her into the light. This is a powerful testimony of healing, redemption, and the unwavering love of God. To inquire about counseling, email Louise at Louise@louisesedgwick.com.

And we had so much to talk about we are releasing our interview in two parts. In the first part of our conversation we explore Victoria's Secret's origin and growth in the broader context of retail's evolution and from the perspective of Lex Wexner's creation of L2 Brands. We delve into how the brand became a cultural phenomenon with stores in just about every major mall and what set the stage for the emergence of the Angels, their iconic fashion shows, and the troubles that would soon befall the company. We'll be back with Part 2 on Friday, digging into the rise and the fall of the brand and leadership lessons from Les Wexner's reign. We also get Chantal and Lauren's take on whether the company has a chance to mount a turnaround. But we kick things off by digging into a very busy week of retail news, all brought to you by Scayle. Up first, we try to make sense of the Trump's planned tariffs and just what the heck is going on at Macy's. We also explore earnings new from Kohl's (terrible) and Abercrombie & Fitch (remarkable), and wonder what this all portends for JC Penney and Target. We close with Amazon's doubling down on investment in Anthropic and an interesting announcement from Perplexity.
