In 1974, a pioneer of the SAS and master of military deception, Dudley Clarke, passed away. His death went almost entirely unnoticed by the British public, despite the fact that he carried out some of the most dramatic deception campaigns of World War Two. He waged a covert war of trickery and misdirection across Europe, which ended up getting him arrested by Spanish authorities while dressed as a woman. He also helped to found one of the world's preeminent special forces; the Special Air Service, or the SAS. His contribution is often overlooked, but without it, the SAS may well have never existed. So who was Dudley Clarke? What were some of the most audacious acts of subterfuge he carried out? And why is he not better known? Dan is joined by former SAS Troop Commander and author of Speed, Aggression, Surprise: The Secret Origins of the SAS, Tom Petch, to answer these questions and more.Produced by James Hickmann and edited by Dougal Patmore.Enjoy unlimited access to award-winning original documentaries that are released weekly and AD-FREE podcasts. GUEST: Robin Horsfall, soldier, writer, campaigner and keynote speaker. ---------- The war in Ukraine continues despite a lack of media interest. Russian forces have made repeated assaults along the Donbas front and attempted an offensive towards Kharkiv. Perhaps Putin wanted some kind of victory, no matter how insignificant, before the Victory Parade in Moscow on May 9th. But it has cost Russia dearly, with the loss of more than 15,000 soldiers killed or wounded and he has nothing to show except a few pock- marked fields and piles of rubble that used to be villages. What is the point of Putin's war, and when will the Western allies finally show him it is fruitless to continue? ---------- SPEAKER: Robin Horsfall joined the British Army at the age of fifteen in 1972. He served with the Parachute Regiment and 22 Special Air Service. He left the British Army in 1984 and worked as a mercenary, bodyguard and as a medical officer is many active zones around the world. Sierra Leone's civil war lasted from 1991 until 2002.  It was marked by exceptional levels of cruelty and suffering.  During this civil war the United Nations, neighboring West African states, and the United Kingdom launched military interventions into Sierra Leone.  The United Kingdom's intervention was called Operation Palliser.  In September 2000 eleven British soldiers participating in Operation Palliser were captured by a militia gang known as the West Side Boys.  When it became clear negotiating with the West Side Boys was proving futile, the British decided to take military action to free their soldiers.  William Fowler's “Operation Barras” tells the story of what happened.

Welcome to Episode 23 of the Trainer's Bullpen, ‘Offsetting the Negative Consequences of Pressure on Marksmanship' with Daniel Cooper. In this interview Dan discusses the relationship between stress arousal and officer performance with firearms in combat conditions. Importantly, Daniel discusses the very important systematic review and meta-analysis that he and colleagues conducted that reinforced the fact that officer performance under threat conditions can be significantly improved by ensuring the training design and implementation includes early contextually relevant pressure. The study ‘Negative Consequences of Pressure on Marksmanship May be Offset by Early Training Exposure to Contextually Relevant Threat Training: A Systematic Review and Meta Analysis, was published in Human Factors in 2023. If your goal is to deliver training, or to train yourself, so that it develops the ability to perform well under high pressure conditions, this interview is for you. Dan Cooper exhorts firearms and skills trainers to seriously reconsider the manner in which firearms training is presently conducted in many law enforcement training academies and agencies. Daniel is a human performance specialist who focuses on improving individual and team performance in high-pressure, high-consequence situations for first responders and tactical operators. He is currently completing a 3-year PhD research project investigating the impacts of pressure and evidence-based training methodologies in Use of Force behaviours to improve the transfer of training to performance. Daniel has built on his previous academic understanding from a double master's degree in physiology and integrated cognitive factors and compliments this through unique experience from 18yrs service in the Special Air Service, high-performance coaching in professional sports and personal pursuits in conquering the world's toughest extreme endurance events across the planets most unforgiving environments.

If the assault failed, the British could not only lose nearly half its special forces soldiers in one go but an Argentinian strike from the airbase could lead to the failure of the troop landings... and the war itself. Daily News Brief by TRT World

*) Kosovo accuses Serbia of kidnapping its border police officers Tensions are rising again between Kosovo and Serbia, after Belgrade arrested three Kosovo police officers, a move Pristina described as kidnapping. In retaliation, Kosovo has banned Serbian vehicles from crossing the border. Wednesday's flare-up between the two Balkan countries follows weeks of tensions, after rioting in northern Kosovo saw 30 NATO peacekeepers wounded in late May. Kosovo's Prime Minister Albin Kurti blamed Serbia for the latest incident, saying the move was likely in "revenge" for the arrest of an alleged Serb paramilitary leader in Kosovo on Tuesday. *) Biden urged to press Modi over freedom of Kashmiri, other journalists The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists has called on the US government to put pressure on India to end a media crackdown and release six detained journalists, including four from India-administered Kashmir. CPJ president Jodie Ginsberg issued the statement ahead of a state visit to Washington next week by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She said there had been an increasing crackdown on India's media since Modi came to power in 2014, highlighting the detention of six Indian journalists, who were covering the impact of the country's security laws. As the world's largest democracy, India needs to live up to that by ensuring a free and independent media, Ginsberg said. *) Paramilitary group RSF accused of killing Sudan's West Darfur governor Sudan's military has accused the paramilitary group, Rapid Support Forces (RSF), of carrying out the killing of West Darfur Governor Khamis Abbakar in the city of El Geneina. The army said Abakar's killing on Wednesday meant the RSF has added what it describes as "a new chapter to its record of barbaric crimes” committed against Sudanese people. An adviser in the RSF did not deny or confirm Abbakar's killing. In a television interview shortly before his death, Abbakar had called for international intervention in what he described as a "genocide" in Sudan. *) Australia veteran accused of killing Afghan civilians refuses to apologise Australia's most decorated war veteran, found by a civil court to have played a part in the murder of Afghan civilians during Afghanistan's invasion, has refused to apologise for his actions. Ben Roberts-Smith said he remained proud of his actions in Afghanistan, where he served in the Special Air Service on six tours from 2006 to 2012. Roberts-Smith has been accused of violating the rules of engagement and involvement in the murder of at least six unarmed prisoners in Afghanistan. In one incident, Roberts-Smith allegedly kicked a handcuffed Afghan civilian off a cliff and ordered two subordinates to shoot the man dead. *) German curator on a mission to return heirlooms stolen from Jews by Nazis Matthias Weniger, a curator at the Munich Museum in Germany is on a mission to return as many heirlooms as possible that were stolen by the Nazi forces from Jewish families during World War II. Many owners were murdered in the Holocaust or, if they succeeded to flee from the Nazis, ended up in far-flung corners of the globe. Despite these odds, and with a combination of thorough detective work and deep knowledge of history, Weniger has so far managed to return about 50 objects to family members and relatives of the original owners. Surviving family members say they are happy to have the heirlooms back, despite the pain triggered by the loss of their relatives.

Whereas around 80% of the public in the UK, Finland and Sweden blame Russia mostly or entirely for the war in Ukraine, this view is by no means universal. Russian propaganda may get shirt shrift here but is far more pervasive and persuasive in countries like Bulgaria and Greece, where higher percentages of the population blame NATO more than Russia as the primary cause of the conflict. Today I'm talking to one of the UK's most experienced military men, not just about the execution and impact of the conflict, but also about how the struggle for victory is one of competing narratives where information has become weaponised by propagandists, Where the Kremlin is creating a parallel reality of victory and victimhood, to justify their crimes against humanity and Ukraine. Robin Horsfall joined the British Army at the age of fifteen in 1972. He served with the Parachute Regiment and 22 Special Air Service. He left the British Army in 1984 and worked as a mercenary, bodyguard and as a medical officer is many active zones around the world. He then built London Karate for twenty years, teaching thousands the art and discipline of karate. When he broke his neck, he retired and went to Surrey University aged 56 and graduated in English Literature and Creative Writing three years later. He is the author of several books including his hugely successful autobiography Fighting Scared. He is in demand as an after-dinner speaker and campaigns against the persecution of war veterans and has plans for a Veterans Human Rights campaign in 2021.

The Special Air Service, more colloquially known as the SAS, was the creation of Officer David Stirling during the Second World War. To help with this endeavour, bestselling author Damien Lewis joins James on the podcast to delve into the incredible histories of the men who made the SAS. Shining light on the brilliant people who helped change the face of warfare, what do we really know about this group of rogue heroes? For more Warfare content, subscribe to our Warfare Wednesday newsletter here.To download, go to Android or Apple store. Today we hear an incredible Combat Story from across the pond from a legendary UK SAS operator Billy Billingham who served over 30 years with deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, South America, Africa, and many other places we can't discuss. Billy came from an extremely challenging childhood drinking and fighting on the streets of Birmingham to being appointed a Member of the British Empire by Her Majesty the Queen for his efforts on select hostage rescues and serving as the SAS Ground Commander on what is known as 7/7 or the deadly coordinated attacks in London on July 7th, 2005.  Billy went from being the absolute elite leader, working alongside our own Delta and DEVGRU operators for years in the post-9/11 world, to hanging up his uniform and finding a new path. He has know written an autobiography aptly titled ‘The Hard Way' and two fiction novels based on his own exploits titled ‘Call to Kill' and ‘Survive to Fight' (think SAS meets 007).  He is also a lead on two incredibly successful programs in the UK and Australia titled “SAS: Who Dares Wins” where he and other special operators take civilians and celebrities through punishing special ops training; he shared that the show is coming to the US soon! He and his wife run a charity organization and he does public speaking engagements across the UK. I hope you enjoy this incredibly humble story that takes us inside the “Interest Room” (which I learned is the term for the SAS Team Room) and the highs and lows of a life well-lived at the tip of the spear from our UK brothers and sisters as much as I did.  #military #veteran  Find Billy Online:  - Instagram @billingham22b https://www.instagram.com/billingham22b/  - Twitter @billingham229b https://twitter.com/billingham229b - Facebook https://www.facebook.com/MarkBillinghamSAS/  - Deux Mains Academy @rebuildglobally https://www.instagram.com/rebuildglobally/ - Billy's Website https://www.markbillybillingham.com/about   Find Ryan Online:  - Ryan's Linktree https://linktr.ee/combatstory - Merch https://www.bonfire.com/store/combatstory/ - Instagram @combatstory https://www.instagram.com/combatstory - Facebook @combatstoryofficial https://fb.me/combatstoryofficial - Send us messages at https://m.me/combatstoryofficial - Learn more about Ryan www.combatstory.com/aboutus - Intro Song: Sport Rock from Audio Jungle Show Notes 0:00 - Intro  0:41 - Guest Introduction (Billy Billingham)  2:36 - Interview begins  5:11 - Rough childhood in Peaky Blinders neighborhood in Birmingham, England 17:26 -Cadet School experience 22:12  - Overcoming getting burned by caustic soda at 15 yrs old and almost dying in a gang fight to still join the military   28:30 - Joining The Second Battalion, Parachute Regiment (2 PARA)  30:03 - Lessons from the PARAs and first jump in the jungle of Belize  42:48 - First time in a combat zone in Cypress  44:23 -  Fighting terrorists in Ireland  48:15 - Why SAS route and the brutal training and selection process 57:50 - Path after SAS selection into Mountain Troupe  1:01:25 - Excitement of first op in first week as SAS 1:04:17 - Squad "Interest rooms"  1:05:45 - The squadron dynamic and respect for those who came before  1:09:21 - Why the B Squadron are characterized as the "rogues"  1:11:12 - Combat Story - A hostage rescue during a bloody time in Bosnia  1:19:36 - The sixth sense that comes with experience  1:2102 - Emotions after a mission and after getting out  1:24:25 -  Where were you on 7/7  during London bombings?  1:27:56 - TV show "SAS: Who Dares Wins" and what is coming to the US  1:30:40 - "The Hard Way" autobiography and "Call to Kill" novel  1:35:46 - What did you carry into combat? 1:39:40  - Would you do it again?  1:42:55 - Listener comments and shout outs    This video covers the following subjects:   - SAS Sergeant Major  - 7/7 SAS Ground CDR  - SAS Ground Commander  - UK SAS operator Billy Billingham   Billy is a certified SF and Counter Terrorist Sniper Instructor, Advanced Evasive Driving Instructor, Tracking/Jungle Warfare/Navigation Instructor, Demolition/Sabotage Instructor, Ski Mountaineering/Rock Climbing/Abseiling/Ice climbing Instructor, Combat Survival/RTI Instructor, Counter Terrorist Instructor (all options) and has worked as a Patrol Medic/Trauma Life Support agent for 5 hospital attachments.   If you would like to learn more about SAS Sergeant Major, Billy Billingham I suggest you look into our various other video clips: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCCyApoJr-mNmdMNwdk22xEQ _________________________   Have I responded to all of your questions about SAS Sergeant Major, Billy Billingham?

David Stirling was an aristocrat, innovator and special forces legend that earned him the nickname 'The Phantom Major'. His formation of the Special Air Service in the summer of 1941 led to a new form of warfare and Stirling is remembered as the father of special forces soldiering. But was he really a military genius or in fact a shameless self-publicist who manipulated people, and the truth? For his new book 'David Stirling: The Phoney Major' military historian Gavin Mortimer extensively interviewed SAS veterans who fought and worked with him and poured over declassified government files that paint a very different picture of the glittering legacy Stirling has secured. In this episode, he gives Dan an explosive analysis of Stirling's complex character: the childhood speech impediment that shaped his formative years, the pressure from his overbearing mother, his fraught relationship with his brother, Bill, and the jealousy and inferiority he felt in the presence of his SAS second-in-command, the cold-blooded killer Paddy Mayne.Produced by Mariana Des ForgesMixed and Mastered by Dougal PatmoreIf you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe today!
