He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical and Biomedical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from New York University School of Medicine. While his early career in radiology and clinical operations brought professional success, it also exposed him to the limitations of traditional Western medicine in addressing the deeper causes of human discontent. The turning point came when Dr. Katyal discovered Rapid Transformational Therapy (RTT) and became a certified hypnotherapist and RTT therapist in 2024. His transformation through RTT, including overcoming a deep-seated fear, reinforced his belief in the power of addressing subconscious limiting beliefs. During today's interview, Dr. Katyal describes the limitations of positive psychology and the benefits of rapid transformational therapy. He then goes on to describe the explosion in mental illness in children and young adults since 2010. He warns parents to be vigilant and proactive concerning the effects of social media on their children. He offers advice on how to protect children from addiction to social media. And he directs them to his website at sanjkatyal.com where they can access additional information. You'll find links mentioned in the episode at nonclinicalphysicians.com/subconscious-mind/

In our current world of flashy social media and aesthetic ideals, fleeting physical alterations in pictures and videos exist in the presence of Photoshop, filters, and airbrush. However, there exists a whole dominion in the sciences that seeks to help others achieve these physical ideals. Cosmetic and plastic surgery have successfully allowed people to look the way they want to...and sometimes not (Hi "Botched"). But our current generation also pursues a new movement that seems to oppose the intent of these photo-editing programs: self-love. The question is...does the medical field of "tweaking" surgeries defy this pursuit of self-love? Are cosmetics and plastics just all vanity? There is no better person to talk to about this controversial topic than someone who masters in this very field of physical alteration: facial cosmetic surgeon Dr. Yirae Ort from Bellevue, Washington.Receiving her bachelor's degree in the sciences from Youngstown State University in 2006, attaining her Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) degree from The Ohio State University in 2012 and subsequently her Doctor of Medicine (MD) degree from Case Western Reserve University in 2015 coupled with a residency, externship, and fellowships in Facial Plastic Surgery, Orthognathic Surgery, Cleft Craniofacial Surgery, Cosmetic Surgery, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Ort is truly an expert in the science and art of helping others attain the facial presentations that they desire (facelifts, implants, Botox, fillers, liposuction, and of the like). From her thoughts about facial feminization surgery to the rejection and infection risks of implants to the viability of liposuction for long-term fat reduction and to the psychosocial and psychological effects of cosmesis, Dr. Ort underlines the importance of understanding and respecting one's informed choice for their body. To be in a body that one is happy about and physically healthy in...that is self-love.This episode includes brief discussions around the topics of bullying and body dysmorphia.Livestream Air Date: June 19, 2021Dr. Yirae Ort: IG @dr.yirae.ort, Web: www.ortmdsurgery.comFriends of Franz: IG @friendsoffranzpodChristian Franz (Host): IG @chrsfranz & YT Christian Franz

“You’re not going to be happy ‘when.’ I (previously) thought, ‘I'll be happy when I finish residency (etc)...’  It's really important to just be happy now. To do something that you love, to be in a place that you love, to be around people who make you feel good about yourself. I think prioritizing yourself and your happiness is really important.” -Dr. Joanne Stekler  In today’s episode, Jen talks with renowned HIV expert, Dr. Joanne Stekler. Dr. Stekler is a leader in her field of medicine, and has been instrumental in creating an app to help people find HIV resources, testing and preprophylaxis treatment, HealthMindr. In her spare time, she has a wonderful cooking blog, UglyDucklingBakery.com.    Have you ever been interested in creating an app or a blog of your own? If so, tune it to find out what it takes and how to get started!    During the episode, Dr. Stekler refers to DocWorking: The Whole Physician Podcast Episode 29 when she says, “One of the things from a previous podcast was about the analysis paralysis that doctors face.” Listen to that episode by clicking here.   Excerpts from the show:   “How does HealthMindr help you reach out to the underserved populations that have difficulty getting access (to HIV testing and prophylaxis)?” -Dr. Jen Barna   “If you back up to the 1990s, the internet didn't exist and one of the first things as we moved into the 2000s is that people were using the internet to find sex. And you thought, as a public health person, ‘Well, if people are using the Internet to find sex, can we use the internet to help them access prevention and testing and research and all those other things?’ So very early on I said, ‘I’m going to build an app!’ I think I had ten thousand dollars to build this app and try to help people find resources. That's what got me interested in what I'll put under the umbrella of electronic or mobile health and other related technologies.  And so in a partnership with Patrick Sullivan at Emory University, we did some work trying to understand what men who are at risk for HIV acquisition would want in an app. Do they want sex diaries, do they want all sorts of other things? And it started off in PrEP. So in 2010 or something like that, thinking about how do we encourage people to get on regular HIV testing schedules, (the recommendation is that folks who are sexually active should get tested for HIV once a year and if they are at particular risk to get tested every three months or so), how do we help them get reminders to get an HIV test? So this app started off really HIV testing focused, and then when PrEP HIV (pre-exposure prophylaxis) got approved in 2012, we incorporated asking people about PrEP, and what we realized from some of our initial work with HealthMindr is that people were accessing the app for information and for locating resources. So what we're testing right now in the southeast part of the United States is whether or not access to this app with information and assessments for what is your risk, should you be on PrEP, do you need post exposure prophylaxis, and how to find those resources, and whether having access to that app will get people on PrEP. That's what we're testing right now, we’re in I think year four of a five-year project.” -Dr. Joanne Stekler “How did you find time to start a blog?” -Dr. Jen Barna   “I always do too much and whatever I do I do it to the fullest extent that I can, that's the short answer. I think, you know, again, I've always been cooking and baking all my life and I think I started baking more and doing bread when my kiddo went to school and I had to start providing her lunches. It's like, we need bread and you realize the store bread is just not as good as something that you can make at home. So then I started making bread a couple times a week and then it was the sort of sharing of all my cooking on social media that happened at the start of the pandemic. You know I’d always been doing it, and occasionally I'd been posting, ‘Hey look at this fun thing that I've made’ but it wasn't every day, it certainly wasn't once a month. Then when the pandemic started in February and March, as an infectious disease doc, I was trying to help my network of about 400 to 500 folks who are Facebook friends with me, some of whom are docs but many of whom aren’t, to try and make sense of all the information and fear that was happening in February and March of last year. I started feeling guilty about how much Covid information I was sharing and I wanted to make sure that I was sharing some other thing. I decided one day to ask everybody a question about bean burgers because I've been a vegetarian for ten years in my past and I love a good bean burger, I just find the homemade ones to be so mushy. So I just asked them, ‘What can I do to make my bean burgers less mushy?’ and my friends, a lot of whom are cooks, started sharing all sorts of tips. Put it in corn starch or add some vital wheat gluten or dry the beans. Drying the beans was the answer. Dry the beans for ten to fifteen minutes in the oven and that really helps. I've also added quinoa. There's a whole post you can read on my blog about all the steps that I've done. You know, it’s not a beef burger,  it's never going to be, but I think it's now a good vehicle for cheese and condiments and everything else that you want in a burger.” -Dr. Joanne Stekler “How do these different parts of your life as a physician, researcher, patient advocate, mom and blogger intersect?” -Dr Jen Barna   “Well, I can't turn off any part of me so something that I’ve learned as a food blogger potentially might influence me as a doctor and vice versa. I came up with five rules, or advice, to live by that I think are equally applicable regardless of what part of my life we're talking about:   Lesson 1: There are always going to be people who cheat and who take advantage of other people, who don't share and who really are just climbing. My advice is, Don't be one of those people.    Lesson 2: It's really important to identify a niche. So this is something that, as an academic physician, you learn very early on when you're starting a fellowship. Everyone tells you, ‘Identify one place where you can be the expert.’ For me it was acute HIV infection, recognition of symptoms and HIV testing. So if anybody had a question or needed a speaker they would think, ‘Oh, I need to ask Joanne’. Then, as I've gotten more experience and more stable funding I've been able to expand my niche but it's really important to focus, again both in academia as well as in blogging. And I think it's important that that area is something that you love and you're good at and it's important to recognize that there's room for everyone in all of these worlds. Everyone has a voice. But start small and realize that you have to solve a problem for other people.  One of the things I thought as a blogger was that I'm going to all of a sudden be posting recipes and sharing my pictures and people are going to come to me and love me, and that isn't true at all. One of the podcasts I listen to gave the metaphor of going into Times Square and saying, ‘Look at me, come to me’ and that's not the way it works.  You have to identify a group of people, your ideal customer avatar for blogging purposes, and figure out what problem they have and what problems you need to solve. Not everyone can be the Steve Jobs of identifying something that people don't even know that they're missing in their lives. Not everybody can be Steve Jobs but there are lots of problems out there, and whether it's in medicine or in blogging or in any other field, figure out what the problem is and try to solve it.    Lesson 3: Which I find so important, it's about community and mentoring. No matter what part of our world we're talking about, we need to have community, we need to have peers we can talk to, we need to have people that we can learn from. I think it's important to learn from senior mentors who have the experience. It's important to learn from your peers because they're going through many of the things that you're going through and it's also important to learn from your mentees. Especially as I've gotten older I'm working with younger folks who have a different perspective and especially in social media it's important to learn what everybody's doing and to teach and to learn what excites other people.  So find your community, find a mentor, find people to mentor yourself.    Lesson 4: Then I'm learning from this blogging world that success is a combination of luck and being in the right place at the right time, and recognizing that you're in the right place and right time, and running with something, and being persistent about it.  So I don't want to give you more details right now, I may have something in the works that I'm hoping to advance and I don't want to curse myself.    Lesson 5: Don't be afraid of self-promotion. Now don't be a braggart, but it's really important to let people know what you're working on because life isn't fair. We all think, ‘I’m going to go and I'm going to do great work and people are going to recognize me for my great work,’ but unfortunately that’s not the way it works. You have to introduce yourself and introduce yourself to people who make decisions and let them know who you are and let them know what you're working on and let them know about yourself because then when your grants are being reviewed or your papers are being reviewed, they'll say, ‘Oh I know Joanne, I met her at a meeting,’ and this is unfortunately the way the world works. So let people know who you are and what you're working on and don't be afraid to do that whether or not it's in medicine or on social media.  But the caveat is to turn off social media because it's the biggest time suck in the world. And once you get to the point where it's not advancing what your goals are, turn it off. Go for a walk, go for a run, go enjoy the day, spend time with your family and you know, at the end of the day, that's what we have.” -Dr. Joanne Stekler ________________ Dr. Joanne Stekler's research centers on HIV testing and HIV prevention. In this world full of polarity, the contrast CAN create deep clarity about who we are, where we are going and how we can best serve. When we understand how the most powerful laws of physics impact our experience and our movement forward, we can make quantum leaps instead of linear progress. Jennifer Hough was a corporate economist for a large multinational company until she got physically sick (migraines, depression and fibromyalgia) from toxic exposure, and watched her life fall into effort and struggle. She then traveled the world and worked with scientists, doctors, mystics and spiritual leaders, who corroborated the tie between our vitality, our abundance, our ability to flow and the laws of physics, and made an astounding full recovery. Her relentless journey to fully heal showed her that understanding the relationship of physics to life not only affected her health, but also her finances, business, energy and communication. She became passionate about developing leading-edge systems to assist her clients to achieve quantum leap results in all areas of life. Her joy now is to take her clients on an experiential journey into the use of everyday physics to shift their ability to flourish in business, body, and abundance. Jennifer’s work has been featured in documentaries, TV, radio, best-selling books, and on stages around the world. Jennifer has 20 years of experience educating doctors (MDs, NDs and DCs), teachers, CEOs and Associations (Nurses, NDs, HR, Native American) in the physics of flow through her program, Get Out of Your Own Way™. There are three “laws” for successful TikTok posts: make people laugh, tell a personal story people can empathize with, or teach people something. Doctors use the platform to talk about their career paths; nurses use TikTok to record dancing routines during the breaks in their shifts. There’s an MRI image explanatory channel, and specialists from a broad spectrum talk about their expertise or give insight into their working environment.  MD candidates from the US Amanda d’Almeida and Dan Villavecer are the faces behind Medicine Explained. Medicine Explained is a channel with over 1.1 million of followers, explaining everyday issues such a “What is a brain freeze? How do menstrual cups work? What is scoliosis? Can women exercise, bathe or swim during their period?” etc. Dan and Amanda started creating content as a way to fight medical misinformation on the internet. Medicine Explained was started to decentralize medical information by making it understandable to everyone, acting as preventative health education to people around the world who may never have access to proper healthcare, but have access to social media.  In less than 6 months, the TikTok channel has amassed over 1.1 million followers and over 100 million views worldwide. The hashtag #MedicineExplained has over 100 Million views on the platform.  Dan and Amanda don’t show their faces but use drawings to get their point across.   Dan Villavecer is a current Doctor of Medicine (MD) candidate in the US, where he is the President of Medical Entrepreneurship. He received his Masters of Science in Cellular and Molecular Biology. Prior to starting his medical education, he worked at Forward (goforward.com) in San Francisco, which was among the first primary care practice providers with a truly patient-centered design, at Forward doctors sit next to the patient in the doctor’s office, not behind the computer screen etc. Forward is an exemplary case of how the doctor-patient relationship can look like in the modern era and was listed as a Top 25 Inventions of 2017 by Time Magazine for reinventing primary care. Amanda d’Almeida is a current dual Doctor of Medicine (MD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) candidate. She was part of Nature published Beat AML program, which created the largest-to-date dataset on primary acute myeloid leukemia (AML) samples offering genomic, clinical, and drug response data. Amanda and Dan currently also work as interns at Lumos - AI-powered search tool for doctors that gives direct answers to clinical questions, using trustworthy sources. In this discussion, you will hear more about their thinking. They offered insight into the current state of medical education, their creative process, content strategy on TikTok and more. Ira Pastor, ideaXme life sciences ambassador, interviews Professor Sergelen Orgoi,MD, PhD, general surgeon from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, who is best known for pioneering and developing low cost liver transplantation and laparoscopic surgery in Mongolia. Ira Comments: Today we are going to be continuing on this interesting journey. At over 1.5 million square kilometres, Mongolia is the 18th largest, but the most sparsely populated sovereign state in the world, with a population of only around three million people. It is also a landlocked country, with very little arable land, as much of its area is covered by grassy steppe and the Gobi Desert. Approximately 30% of the Mongolian population is nomadic or semi-nomadic, and when it comes to modern surgical care, there have been many challenges over the years due to it's rugged geography, serious political and financial constraints, and this large nomadic population. Professor Sergelen Orgoi, MD, PhD,is a general surgeon from Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, best known for pioneering and developing low cost liver transplantation and laparoscopic surgery in Mongolia. She is an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (ACS), Professor of Surgery and the Head of Surgery Department at the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences, and Vice President of the Mongolian Surgical Association. Professor Orgoi earned her Bachelor of Medicine, Master of Clinical Medicine, Doctor of Medicine (MD), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) from the Mongolian National University of Medical Sciences (MNUMS) and completed medical fellowships in developed countries such as South Korea, Switzerland, USA, and Finland. She has led several projects that are presenting impressive examples of possibilities, not just for Mongolia, but for other low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) by addressing this absence of basic surgical care, leading the Mongolian World Health Organization’s (WHO) Global Initiative for Emergency and Essential Surgical Care (GIEESC). This coordinated effort, addressing absence of adequate capacity for emergency and essential surgical care services in LMICs resulted in dramatic improvements in surgical and anesthetic care capabilities in more than 300 isolated rural communities in Mongolia. The World Health Organization designated Mongolia as the first WHO GIEESC Collaborating Center, with goals to expand the Mongolian success regionally in Central and Southeast Asia. In 2005, when nearly half of the population was still nomadic and only 4 percent of gallbladders were removed laparoscopically, Professor Orgoi orchestrated the expansion of laparoscopy. Now laparoscopic cholecystectomy is available in 17 of Mongolia's 21 provinces. With trauma as the third leading cause of death in Mongolia, she oversaw the introduction of the Advanced Trauma Life Support program. Professor Orgoi led the development of lower-cost liver transplants and orchestrated inclusion for all transplantation into the government health plan in Mongolia, where liver cancer is the most prevalent cancer. This initiative improved intensive care unit capability, pathology, gastrointestinal support, and pharmacy, strengthening their overall health care system. In 2011, Professor Orgoi and her team of surgeons did the first successful liver transplantation in Mongolia at the First Central Hospital of Mongolia, and since then, her team has done 47 liver transplantations in Mongolia. Recognizing that liver cancer is the most prevalent and economically disastrous cancer in Mongolia, she led the development of low-cost liver transplants in Mongolia. Now liver transplants cost only around US $3-5 thousand. She also proposed that the Mongolian state health budget cover all liver transplantations and now the state budget covers 75 percent of all liver transplantations in Mongolia. On this show we will hear from Professor Orgoi: How she pioneered such a successful model for laparoscopic training in a poor country like Mongolia with such a widespread nomadic population. How Mongolia, which has the world’s highest rate of liver cancer due to chronic hepatitis (400,000 of Mongolia’s 3 million citizens are diagnosed with a hepatitis virus) is dealing with this underlying liver cancer / cirrhosis driver via drugs and vaccines. How Mongolia is dealing with the problem of human echinococcosis (a parasitic disease caused by tapeworms and parasite eggs in contaminated food, water or soil, or after direct contact with animal hosts) which is anther local driver of expensive drug therapy and extensive surgeries. About how Mongolia is dealing with and controlling the local Coronavirus pandemic. Her future plans for kidney and pancreatic surgeries in Mongolia. In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with our favourite LOCAL-ISH plant-based cardiologist, Dr. Shane Williams. This is his second appearance on The Plant Trainers Podcast. Last time on episode 296 we went through the cardiology basics, while this time we focused more on the Ischemia Trail. You will not only be stunned by the findings this study brings forward about the effect of surgery on cardiac patients, but you will be fascinated to hear how this did not make it into the media. Therefore it is our job to share this information so patients can make informed decisions about their health. Once again, a plant-based diet and a healthy lifestyle are a better choice even for people who are told they need heart surgery. Born and raised in Newfoundland, Dr. W. Shane Williams obtained his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and was selected as class valedictorian in 1995. He then completed his 4 year Doctor of Medicine (MD) and 3-year post-graduate fellowship program in Internal Medicine at Memorial as well. He went on complete a 3-year Cardiology Subspecialty Fellowship here in Ontario and 2008 moved to Muskoka, Ontario to open his private practice in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. In 2010, he stumbled across a copy of the book ‘The China Study’ written by Dr. T. Colin and Tom Campbell and was surprised with the amount of nutritional research that existed to support a whole foods, plant-based diet to not only prevent but also stabilize, improve and sometimes even reverse many chronic conditions and we talk about that more in episode 296. Dr. Williams is a cardiologist practicing in Bracebridge, Ontario. He’s lectured at plant-based conferences, hosted many week-long immersion programs as well as a 10 day ‘Plant-based Immersion Summit’ in the Caribbean with Drs. Campbell and Esselstyn and with other leaders in the field. He considers himself very lucky to have witnessed (and continues to witness) so many of his patients often completely turn their health around once they learn and implement the scientifically proven, optimal nutritional approach for humans – a whole-food, plant-based diet. He’s passionate about bringing this information to as many people as possible so they too can become empowered to both safeguard and improve their health. In this episode we discuss:  Being grateful for our parents  What is Ischemia  Heart disease vs artery disease  The Ischemia trial  What steps to take before going for cardiac surgery  20% event rates after surgery  A solution to people in this situation  The courage trial

Ira Pastor Comments: Today we are going to be talking about mitochondria, among many other longevity and anti-aging themed topics. We're also going to talk a little bit about the role of pessimism and realism when it comes to the human translation of certain technologies, and why it is important to limit "messianic thinking" as much as possible. Mitochondria The mitochondria are double-membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic organisms and are responsible for generating most of the cell's supply of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), used as a source of chemical energy. Thus mitochondria is termed the "powerhouse of the cell." Damage and subsequent dysfunction in mitochondria is an important factor in a range of human diseases due to their influence in cell metabolism. Mitochondrial disorders often present themselves as neurological disorders, but can also manifest as myopathies, diabetes, multiple endocrinopathy, and a variety of other systemic disorders. The mitochondrial genome represents the full genetic complement of a mitochondria and contains approximately 16,600 base pairs, encoding 37 genes, and the polypeptides it codes for are all subunits of enzyme complexes of the oxidative phosphorylation system. Also, mitochondrial dysfunction can not only be driven based on damage to these genes, but also to mitochondrial genes in the nucleus, leading to many rare diseases such as Friedreich's ataxia, hereditary spastic paraplegia, and Wilson's disease. Dr. Magomed Khaidakov: To discuss this, and many other topics, I am joined by Dr. Magomed Khaidakov, Assistant Research Professor, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Arkansas for the Medical Sciences. Dr. Khaidakov obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from 1st Medical Institute, Moscow, Russia, his PhD in Molecular Biology, from the University of Victoria (UVIC), British Columbia, Canada and for the last few decades his primary research interests have been the biology of aging and degenerative pathologies, as well as identification and correction of biological design flaws that limit mammalian lifespan. He is also the author of the recently published book "Pessimistic Guide To Anti-Aging Research." We will hear from Dr. Khaidakov: About his background and an overview of the importance of mitochondria in both health and degenerative disease. An overview of his theories related to species-specific lifespans and the correlation with accumulation of large deletions in mitochondrial DNA. Other important areas of anti-aging research, and their limitations. A futuristic view of anti-aging technologies. Finally, his perspective on the longevity biotech community and places for pessimism and realism to have a role in critical thinking of novel approaches. In this episode of The Plant Trainers Podcast, we talk with Dr. Shane Williams about how heart disease impacts us all, even your cardiologist. That’s because the #1 killer of cardiologists or any doctor is actually heart disease. This is cause for alarm but we know many cardiologists who have it all figured out. We love how Dr. Williams found a plant-based diet. It’s actually quite unique from any other story we have heard before. We guess you can say it was pure chance. We take some time to talk about cholesterol, hypertension, sugars, salt, and oils on some pretty easy to understand terms. He also walks us through his system for helping his patients get on board for compliance with a plant-based diet. This is definitely something you can share with your health care provider as they may be able to relate to his personal story or even duplicate his system. Born and raised in Newfoundland, Dr. W. Shane Williams attended Memorial University of Newfoundland (MUN) in St. John’s where he obtained his Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy [BSc (Pharm)] being selected as class valedictorian in 1995. He then completed his 4 year Doctor of Medicine (MD) and 3-year post-graduate fellowship program in Internal Medicine at Memorial as well. He went on complete a 3-year Cardiology Subspecialty Fellowship at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario and in 2008 moved to Muskoka, Ontario to open his private practice in Cardiology and Internal Medicine. He’s lectured at plant-based conferences, hosted many week-long immersion programs locally as well as a 10 day ‘Plant-based Immersion Summit’ in the Caribbean with Drs. Campbell and Esselstyn along with other leaders in the field. He’s passionate about bringing this information to as many people as possible so they too can become empowered to both safeguard and improve their health.   In this episode we discuss: The China Study Losing 22 pounds #1 killer of doctors The Canadian plant-based movement amongst doctors Sugars Salt Oils How to help patients learn more about a plant-based lifestyle How to help people learn how to start cooking plant-based Hypertension Cholesterol Is 100% compliance necessary?
