Why do some women thrive during perimenopause while others struggle with anxiety, insomnia, or weight gain? How do estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone impact your energy, mood, and overall health? And what's the difference between synthetic, bioidentical, and compounded hormone treatments? In this episode of The Courage To Be™,Dr. Anna Garrett, a hormone health expert and pharmacist, explains what every woman should know about perimenopause, menopause, and hormone therapy. She breaks down how hormone levels fluctuate, why testing is key, and which treatment options—like estrogen patches, progesterone creams, and testosterone therapy—might work best for different symptoms. She also shares a surprising anecdote about how women often don't rub progesterone cream long enough, leading to fat tissue buildup and unwanted side effects—an important lesson for anyone using over-the-counter treatments.Dr. Garrett addresses common concerns, including the connection between hormones and bone health, libido, and weight gain, and why personalized care is essential. If you've ever felt confused about hormone therapy or frustrated by mixed messages in healthcare, this episode will help you make informed choices.Note: If you're looking for episodes on Think and Grow Rich and how it has transformed lives, look for an asterisk (*) before the title. About Dr. Sarah Doyle: Dr. Sarah Doyle is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner, Diplomate with the American Clinical Board of Nutrition. Founder of DrSarahDoyle.com, creator of the 7X Method Biohacking Bootcamp, Co-Founder and principal clinician of HealWell Regenerative Institute in Miami Beach. Author of The THIN Formula and the 7X Method. “The internet is full of contradictions and misinformation. Learn biohacking from a board-certified, licensed clinician… stop listening to influencers!” Through functional medicine testing, evidence-based protocols, and lifestyle modification coaching, Dr. Doyle has developed a proven system that has helped her clients lose weight, increase energy and sex drive. Sexual vitality is an important indicator of your overall health. Nobody wants to spend the last years of their lives sitting in a wheelchair, being bedridden, bouncing in and out of hospitals, or being a burden to their loved ones. Her focus is on root-cause medicine and all-natural solutions that have NO side effects. My mission is to keep people out of hospitals and off prescription medications. What We Discuss In This Episode: Dr. Sarah Doyle emphasizes the importance of comprehensive hormone testing for women over 40—going beyond standard blood tests to include urine panels that measure hormone metabolites like estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone. This deeper analysis helps identify imbalances more accurately, allowing for targeted, effective treatment plans. During perimenopause and menopause, hormonal shifts can trigger symptoms such as insomnia, anxiety, depression, and joint or muscle pain. Rather than relying on prescription medications, Dr. Sarah takes a natural approach, using supplements and herbs to restore balance and alleviate these symptoms. She also highlights how nutrient deficiencies and gut dysbiosis can worsen hormonal and neurological issues as women age. To combat this, she recommends a nutrient-dense diet, targeted supplementation, and resetting the gut microbiome to support overall well-being. Dr. Sarah's signature 'Seven X Method' focuses on aligning food intake with the body's circadian rhythms—an approach that has helped her clients improve digestion, reduce inflammation, and enhance metabolic health, all without intense exercise. Resources from Dr. Sara Doyle: Dr. Sarah offers a 10-12 week biohacking bootcamp program that provides comprehensive support, education, and personalized guidance to help women optimize their health and prevent issues like Alzheimer's. She's the Author of ‘The THIN Formula' and 'The 7X Method'. As a health & wellness practitioner, Sarah observed two main things: 1. What you eat will determine which floor of the hospital you end up on 2. Although most doctors really DO care about people's welfare, they are forced to practice “CYA medicine” and primarily trained to follow prescription drug protocols. Through functional medicine testing, evidence-based protocols, and lifestyle modification coaching, Dr. Doyle has developed a proven system that has helped her clients lose weight, increase energy and gain focus. Send us a Text Message. What a brilliant woman. Author of the 7X Method and The Thin Formula. After graduating from business she went into Real Estate. After a bad experience, she went back to school for physical therapy. When COVID broke out she was being reached out for jobs and decided that she didn't want the tips. Dr. Sarah wrote two books and even did a turnaround to start her own business. She was an anorexic gymnast and bulimic cheerleader. She wrote a case study on a bulimic and did a brain chemistry test. I won't go through all what she received as a result, but it's so interesting to listen to. She spoke to chemical imbalances, and her tests determined the dosages.Dr. Sarah doesn't believe Big Pharma wants to share about these tests. You will hear more about that by listening to this Podcast.I asked how she tests? She laughed. Simple. Just pi in a cup. You get your results in 10 days. DNA is a swab, or finger prick for allergies, but everything else, it's simple. Biden took his hatred of America to a new level this past Memorial Day when he actually nodded off to sleep during the national ceremony. But his lack of care for veterans isn't just on the stage. He's made moves to support significant staff cuts at VA facilities at a time when he claims veteran mental health is one of his top priorities. His administration's decision to reduce this resource speaks volumes. The men and women who have sacrificed so much for our country deserve better than delayed care and reduced services. Dr. Sarah Doyle is on today to discuss how Biden is failing veterans in healthcare and how you can get a personalized plan to become the healthiest you've ever been! Big Pharma is still fighting to keep us hooked, and today we're talking about their latest scheme! We're grateful to have our sponsor and dear friend Dr. Sarah Doyle back with us. Not only is she a fellow Turley Talks patriot, but she is a certified functional medical practitioner who co-founded HealWell Regenerative Institute in Miami Beach where she created a proven system for health restoration and transformation. She practices regenerative medicine and approaches weight loss using sustainable, natural medicine and has already helped so many Turley Talkers! We talk about how Big Pharma is now pushing weight loss pills down our throats without even making patients go to a doctor's office and how we could use the safer, more sustainable alternative of natural medicine to reach our health goals. (Note: This is a recast of my interview with Dr. Sarah Doyle.) Highlights: “If you're overweight, you don't have an Ozempic deficiency. You don't have a Mounjaro deficiency. You don't have a Metformin deficiency. What you have is a poor lifestyle.” - Dr. Sarah Doyle “Whatever you do, don't leave your health in the hands of Big Pharma.” - Dr. Steve Turley Timestamps: [00:56] Big Pharma's new scheme to push pills down our throats [09:01] How do we rightly talk to people about weight loss [10:56] Dr. Sarah Doyle's approach to weight loss issues [15:45] How a one-size-fits-all approach overlooks the individual health needs of a person [16:22] Do conservatives take their health more seriously? Joe Rogan makes a bombshell prediction about 2024, all as Biden's poll numbers continue to implode below anything any incumbent in the history of our nation has suffered! Also, is Black America finally turning on Biden and the Democrats? We have new data coming in that suggests precisely that. We're going to see precisely who's abandoning the Democrats and where they plan to go for 2024! Highlights: “The latest Harvard/Harris poll has Trump now leading Biden by a whopping 9 points. The latest Rasmussen poll has Trump up by 6! Things are so running away from Biden that Trump last night on Fox announced that he was even going to start holding rallies in the deepest of blue cities like New York.” “There's really no good option for Biden. Obviously, Kamala is a disaster. Michelle Obama ironically doesn't poll very well. In the end, despite what Rogan and Vivek are predicting, the sad reality is that Biden is the best that Democrats have got!” “Biden is polling at just 60% among black voters under 34, with an astonishing 30% supporting Trump. This is a defection that is simply unprecedented in the modern polling era.” Timestamps: [00:40] Joe Rogan's prediction for 2024 [04:29] Trump's announcement that he will hold rallies in the bluest of blue cities [06:27] On the speculation regarding Gavin Newsom as a replacement for Biden [07:40] Biden and the Democrats are losing the black vote Resources: Don't let Big Tech WIN by staying connected to Dr Steve and joining the movement to reclaim our freedoms at: https://join.turleytalks.com/insiders-club=podcast Take back your health from big pharma, book a call with Dr. Sarah Doyle, and get an amazing discount on her 8-week boot camps for men or women! It's officially been 4 years since the world shut down because of COVID-19. Four years! Wow! In a sense, the virus did what Donald Trump was trying to do. It helped expose the real patriots from the phonies. Can you imagine if Covid had never happened? Who would still be masquerading around in Conservative clothing? Of course, Covid was disastrous and effected everything in our lives from our jobs to our healthcare, our communities, and even our journalism. But what has really come out since then? Just recently, the ex-director of the National Institute of Health, a man who was Fauci's boss, has come out and publicly admitted the handling of Covid was wrong and actually botched. And people all over the world are recognizing this. Joining me today is a woman who was on the front lines of the Covid crisis, Dr. Sarah Doyle. She has worked extensively to rehabilitate people affected by the disease and has a lot to say on this subject, 4 years later. Highlights: “Covid is an aggressive disease but it wasn't just the disease.” - Dr. Sarah Doyle “The best way you can prepare is by losing weight.” - Dr. Sarah Doyle Timestamps: [01:14] Francis Collins, Fauci's boss, says the handling of Covid-19 was wrong and botched [05:00] What has been revealed about the mismanagement of Covid-19 [08:59] Is Covid's weaponization returning for this next election and how can you prepare for it [11:30] The food industry's role in the Covid crisis and how can people be educated moving forward [15:36] How the loss of public trust in Big Pharma begins a revival for health/wellness [14:32] Dr. Sarah's story and what you can learn from her free training Resources: Learn how to shirk Big Pharma and take your health BACK with Dr. Sarah Doyle at her upcoming free training on January 11th HERE: https://webinars.drsarahdoyle.com/register Don't let Big Tech WIN by staying connected to Dr Steve and joining the movement to reclaim our freedoms at: https://join.turleytalks.com/insiders-club=podcast Nature's Morphine? This week's episode is with Sarah Doyle- a life & confidence coach, who has successfully created her own business 'the better life project.' Throughout this conversation, Sarah & I touched on various topics ranging from how to build confidence, become self-aware and create the life you desire. Sarah also touched on her own story, detailing the journey she has been on to date and how she now helps others to build various skills and traits which they can then use to live happier and more fulfilled lives. Before becoming a life coach, Sarah worked at the same job for years eventually reaching a point of 'enoughness', realising that it no longer fulfilled her. Upon realising this she details her perseverance in remaining within her job, so that she could establish that leaving was, in fact, the right option (often we can react instantaneously which can be great, but on acting such impulse we may realise later, that the decision made on impulse wasn't necessarily the best decision) and create a plan on what her next move was going to be. Thus, 'the better life' project was born.
Esther Mobley of the San Francisco Chronicle reports on the sale of the Robert Sinskey Vineyard Winery, tasting room and vineyards. However billionaires Stewart and Lynda Resnick elected to not purchase the brand. For the moment the Sinskeys plan to lease back the facility and continue business as usual. Ingredient labeling for wine starts this year in the EU. The rest of the worlds wine markets will soon follow suit. Is ingredient labeling a win for consumers and producers?Jess Lander uses an electric corkscrew regularly but she seems to think she may be in the minority. Do you own and electric corkscrew? Jackson Family Wines has filed a lawsuit against their insurance company for failure to honor claims submitted due to fire damage from wildfires. Bill and I discuss these items and more in this week's addition of VinoWeek. Thanks to everyone for listening. Cheers!

Earlier this year, Mondoweiss contributing writer Sarah Doyal reviewed the new book, Except For Palestine: The Limits of Progressive Politics, from authors Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick. Sarah wrote: “Delving into the phenomenon long-named in leftist circles as [quote] “Progressive Except for Palestine” [end quote], Hill and Plitnick meticulously deconstruct progressives' neglect of the Palestinian cause. They explain the ways in which the singular exception of Palestine from demands for equal rights betrays not only Palestinians but the progressive movement itself.” She went on to say: “Except for Palestine is a crucial and ultimately hopeful tool that better equips progressives to combat injustices within their own political circles.” On today's show Josh Ruebner speaks with Marc Lamont Hill and Mitchell Plitnick about how they came to be advocates for Palestinian liberation, what needs to be done to push the struggle forward, and their critical new book. - - - - - Visit Uncle Bobbie's online bookshop to buy the book: https://bookshop.org/shop/unclebobbies - - - - - - - - - - Links Marc Lamont Hill – Website: https://www.marclamonthill.com – Twitter: https://twitter.com/marclamonthill Mitchell Plitnick – Rethinking Foreign Policy: https://rethinkingforeignpolicy.org – Twitter: https://twitter.com/MJPlitnick Ending progressives' Palestinian exception - Sarah Doyle: https://mondoweiss.net/2021/02/ending-progressives-palestinian-exception/ - - - - - - - - - - Visit Mondoweiss for critical coverage of Israel, Palestine, and related U.S. politics: https://mondoweiss.net Support our work with a tax-deductible donation: https://mondoweiss.net/donate/ Subscribe to our free newsletters covering daily headlines, weekly politics updates, and tracking COVID-19 in Palestine: https://mondoweiss.net/newsletters/ Follow us on social media: – Facebook: https://facebook.com/mondoweiss – Twitter: https://twitter.com/mondoweiss – Instagram: https://instagram.com/mondoweiss – Youtube: https://youtube.com/mondoweissvideos - - - - - FREE PALESTINE
This week we were joined by Sarah Doyle and Rachael O’Byrne to discuss gendered violence in the wake of Sarah Everard’s murder and the recent actions of the Met Police. There is a content warning with this episode as we discuss rape and sexual harassment. We felt it was important to record this episode and add to the discussions currently going on around the U.K about how we make our communities and spaces safe places for women to be in. [177] This week's conversation is more like a story, a trip down memory lane, as the title suggests. On the show, we welcome Sarah Doyle, owner of Templeogue Beauty Clinic (@templeoguebeauty) in Dublin — one of Phorest Salon Software's first clients, going back 17 years ago. We discuss her journey with Phorest, what it was like back in the days, the features she's adopted over time, and how from listening to clients, she's gained insights into what they look for in a salon; what's important to them.Links:Visit Templeogue Beauty Clinic's website: https://templeoguebeautyclinic.ie/index.htmlClick here to subscribe to the weekly Phorest FM email newsletter: http://bit.ly/2T2gUj1This episode was edited and mixed by Audio Z: Great music makes great moments. How do we talk to our young children about racism? The media has been full of images of the protests that erupted to protest the police killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis. Carl James, a professor in York University's Faculty of Education, has suggestions on how to approach the subject; Steve Clarke, the Mayor of Orillia, talks about plans to allow worship in public parks; The Mayor of Barrie, Jeff Lehman, offers his reaction to the federal government's plan to immediately transfer all of the revenues earmarked for municipalities; Flavio Turchet of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario explains the protocols that will be in place to help ensure the help of dentists and their patients now that regular visits are resuming; The federal government has set aside millions of dollars to promote domestic tourism. Megan Knott of Tourism tells us how they hope to attract more visitors to the city as the restrictions around the coronavirus are relaxed; Jordan Press of the Canadian Press reports on the Prime Minister's remarks on racism in response to the killing of American George Floyd and looks at the release of funds to support municipal governments; Ernie Cecchetto has recovered from COVD-19 and is now donating his blood plasma in hopes that the antibodies he produced may help researchers find a cure for the disease; Sarah Doyle of the Brookfield Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, at Ryerson University tells us about their research into what the job market may be like ten years in the future.
Our listeners sent us questions and we put them to our expert panel: Sam McConkey, Associate Professor and Head of the Department of International Health and Tropical Medicine at the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, Sarah Doyle is a Consultant in Public Health Medicine at the HSE, and Ray Walley, is a GP and former president of the IMO.
Architect, University of Hawai'i lecturer and TV host for Human(e) Architecture Martin Despang muses over sustainability and unconventionality in O'ahu's approach to architectural design.
Who knew tax could be so interesting?! CPA and FIRPTA/HARPTA specialist Brad Konishi talks me through the process of buying property in Hawaii as a foreigner. We also take a stroll into some tangential cultural grounds regards to the effects of foreign investment on Hawaiians and the questionable stance of Hawaii's self-sustainability in the days following 911.
Life coach Sarah Doyle is a self employed new mum of one. In her Empowered Women Workshops she has coached hundreds of women to achieve happiness, health, success and confidence. But when it came to her own matrescence she freely admits to finding motherhood both physically and emotionally challenging. After her first pregnancy sadly ended in miscarriage Sarah was naturally a very anxious expectant mother. Sarah employed a doula to help her throughout her labour and this coupled with adherence to the hypnobirthing technique enabled Sarah to have a vaginal birth to a beautiful 11.5lb baby boy Billy. Yes, you read that correctly. 11.5lb. After a week at home Sarah and her partner felt that Billy wasn’t behaving as normal. As a precaution they took him into Temple Street but nothing could have prepared them for what happened next. Billy started to have an apnea episode and before Sarah could even register what was happening nurses where performing CPR poor Billy right in front of her. This is quite possibly one of the most harrowing stories I’ve heard on the podcast and it will have you all looking for the nearest paediatric CPR classes in your area. Sarah is a breastfeeding advocate and still loves to feed Billy to this day. But she, like so many others, struggled with the lack of freedom and “relentless nature”of the two hour feeding cycles. She also found the judgment and criticism that can exist around breastfeeding vs bottle feeding a bitter and unnecessary pill to swallow. I also talk to Sarah about returning to work and her postpartum body. In both of these areas I found Sarah’s honesty and insight to be enlightening. She does not profess to have all (or any) of the answers but she does bestow the virtues of being kind to yourself, taking things slowly and leaning into both the good and the bad. I think we can all take something from that. Sarah Doyle has played a pivotal role in Sydney's hospitality scene. But there was a time she worked three jobs just to help keep Bodega running. It was the first restaurant she opened with husband and chef Elvis Abrahanowicz, fellow co-owner and chef Ben Milgate and their business partner/sommelier Joe Valore. And it was a game-changer – its fun, punk, loud focus on good food and good times was a contrast to the mannered French fine-dining scene that was reigning in Sydney hospitality at the time. But the queues came – and they took the chance to follow it up with Porteno. “I think you're really going to struggle here,” a customer told them. And when they found themselves short of money to buy cheesy sauce at Harry's Cafe de Wheels, they wondered if they'd made a dangerous gamble. “What have we done?” Sarah wondered. "We put everything into this." But a rave review by Terry Durack in The Sydney Morning Herald led to Porteno's blockbuster following – which has sparked more venues for the team: Bodega 1904 at the Tramsheds, Porteno splitting into a special events venue and a stand-alone restaurant, Wyno, the wine bar next to Porteno, and Continental Deli Bar Bistro, which is known for its canned treats – like the Mar-tinny cocktail and Neopoli-tin gelato. Then there are the other businesses they've helped back – like LP's Quality Meats, Mary's and Stanbuli. Sarah has many fantastic stories from her 11 years in hospitality – from her early days working at Australia's Wonderland to her amazing ability to land the mid-century Marie-Louise salon site for Stanbuli and her career highlight of seeing one of her idols dine at Porteno. Plus, she shares her unique perspective of being a long-time vegetarian who works in restaurants famous for their meat dishes, her unlikely career path to becoming a well-known figure within hospitality and where she likes to eat and drink in Sydney. PS Look out for Continental's cameo at the Newtown Locals Aussie barbecue at Newtown Festival this Sunday.

In this episode we go into what is methylation, why it’s so important for every function of our body, why it’s gained so much more attention in recent years and how we can create a methylation balance that will help us prevent and reverse ailments such as cancer, autism, thyroid issues, autoimmunity and heart conditions. The concept of methylation is truly fascinating and this is an episode you will want to share with all your loved ones. We previously talked about methylation on the show with Dr. William Walsh. What is methylation? The process of methylation in the body is so fundamental. It is happening all the time. A methyl group, is a carbon with 3 hydrogens. A small little player that is moving all the time, changing the metabolism. Listen in to hear Dr. Fitzgerald talk about the effects it has on our body. It’s important for fetal development and touches every bodily function. Why is there an increasing focus on methylation in the last several years? Epigenetics is booming right now. There is a lot of research surrounding the effect of methylation on cancer, so it’s going to gain a lot of attention. If you have a condition such as cancer, autism, heart disease, thyroid issues, autoimmunity, fertility issues…having a methylation panel is probably a good idea. What can we do to achieve methylation balance? There are many things we can do on a daily basis to achieve methylation balance. We are not “stuck” with the genes we were born with. We can make changes in our lifestyle to alter our genes’ behavior. Exercise- this has a massive effect on methylation balance. It gets the liver up and running and it’s anti-aging! This doesn’t mean beat yourself up with a crazy exercise protocol. It’s about doing what is good for your body, and turning it up over time. No overdoing it. Sleep- There is more and more research coming out on this. Everything gets compromised with just a little bit of sleep deprivation. Our ability to think well and react, our health, our waistline, etc. That’s not even acute sleep deprivation. And when we get “caught up” on sleep, we don’t immediately reverse the effects of sleep deprivation. So we need to constantly manage our sleep. Stress- Nothing depletes methylation like dumping out a bunch of adrenaline. Heightened stress response. Medications- certain medications also damage methylation and inhibit methyl absorption. Acid blockers are a huge one and a large majority of Americans are taking these. We can help our acid reflux with a change in our diets. Gut Microbiome- Probiotics, specially bifida bacteria. If you missed it, our last podcast episode with Sarah Doyle was all about building up our self confidence and learning to love ourselves once and for all. She has a challenge for us too!
This week’s episode is all about building up our confidence, quieting our own mean girl voices and learning to love ourselves once and for all! Sarah Doyle takes us through her journey, one of limiting beliefs, that lacked self love and confidence and how she built herself up to helping thousands of ladies across the globe build Unstoppable Self Confidence, happiness and success in their lives with The Better Life Project. Most people think that we’re either confident or not. We can’t talk ourselves out of low confidence. The key to building self confidence is to take more action towards it, to push ourselves into a growth mindset. Most of us also believe that we have a set mindset, that we’re born with what we have and feel we can’t change certain characteristics. If you’re feeling like you can’t change your confidence, Sarah is challenging us all to take her FREE 7 Day Confidence Plan. If we do everything she recommends in this challenge, we will become more self confident! And who doesn’t want that?! So if you’re ready to tackle that new skill, become stronger, speak in public…let’s take the challenge together! 7 Days to Build Self Confidence Tips Confidence is often confused with self esteem. Here’s the difference. Confidence is how we feel about our abilities, how we feel about ourselves and our future. Self esteem refers exclusively to how we feel about our worth and our value. When someone says they don’t like themselves, that’s low self esteem. Confidence is better linked to courage. Great first tip to becoming more confident is to pay attention to the negative talk in our heads. How many times have you not met a goal, snapped at your spouse, made a mistake at work…and you beat yourself up over it? We become so mean to ourselves, say things to ourselves we would never say to a 5 year old little girl if we heard her say those things to herself. This is the first thing we have to change. We need to treat ourselves with far more love and far more compassion than we do. Our self-esteem will be inspired by that dialogue. Become aware. Awareness = interruption. Target that set of beliefs with a whole new set of beliefs. Use positive self talk, mantras, whatever you want to call it, something to lift your spirits. Walk like you’re a Victoria’s Secret model. Head up high, shoulders back, chin up…take up space. Fake it till you make it! No one notices when we’re slouching trying to hide our tummies, or camouflaging the length of our legs…all people see is lack of confidence. “Beauty comes from within. The way we look is NOT everything.” Tips to Reclaim a Positive Body Image Trade your expectations of what your body should look like and you will appreciate what your body can do for you. If we were all supposed to look a certain way, we would. But we were all made different. Some of us can dance, some of us can bench press, some of us can run a marathon. Thank your body for what it can do for you, and challenge yourself to do something you’ve never done before…a pull up for example. When you do something you never thought you could do, you will be amazed! #exerciseforhappiness Sarah’s 3 Habits to Ensure Her Self-Confidence: Positive affirmations. Surround self with positive posters, images and quotes to remind herself of the life she wants to create. Say yes to the people she loves the most. How to Create a Positive Affirmation Create a new belief you can actually believe and connect with. For example: “I am enough the way that I am.” Sarah’s Morning Routine Although she doesn’t think she has one, we believe she does! No screens in the morning…no checking email! Today's host(s): Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor Today's guest(s): Sister Olga Yaqob and Sarah Doyle Links from today's show: Today's topics: Preparing for Lent Summary of today's show: Lent starts tomorrow. How are you going to take full advantage of this season to prepare for Easter? Scot Landry and Fr. Chris O'Connor are joined by Sr. Olga Yaqob and Sarah Doyle to talk about Lenten resolutions (“What are you giving up for Lent?”), prayer, fasting (and abstinence), and almsgiving. They share practical tips and spiritual insight for approaching the penitential season with joy. 1st segment: Scot welcomes Fr. Chris back to the show and Fr. Chris said last week while in Florida he caught his first ever. It was an edible fish and they had it for dinner. He then showed how it is an illustration for the preaching of the Gospel and the notion of being fishers of men. Fr. Chris also said that “Fat Tuesday” is his patronal feast day. At the seminary, the men prepare their ethnic dishes of their heritage. The word ‘Carnival' comes from the Latin words for “Farewell to meat.” Scot said on today's show, we'll be talking about preparing ourselves for Lent. Scot and Fr. Chris discussed the consistory in Rome over the weekend where Pope Benedict made new cardinals. They quoted Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York who said to those who asked if he was looking to be pope next that he was seeking a higher calling: to be a saint. 2nd segment: Scot welcomed Sr. Olga and Sarah Doyle to the show. Sarah graduated form Boston University last May and has been giving a volunteer year at the Catholic Center at BU. She's been helping carry on the work of Sister Olga when she was there. Sr. Olga formed a new religious community, the Daughters of Mary of Nazareth, and they now have 8 young women and four more are preparing to join this summer. They are all between 18 and 30 years old. Scot also said Sr. Olga's successor at BU, Fr. John McLaughlin, has been named a Monsignor by Pope Benedict for his work in the Archdiocese of the Military. Fr. Chris said Monsignor is an honorary title that recognizes some particularly distinguishable service. He recruited vocations for the Military Archdiocese and was the first to hold that office. The Military Archdiocese provides spiritual care for all Catholics serving in the US military services. Dioceses will co-sponsor men who are ordained in the diocese and serve for a few years before going off the military chaplaincy for up to 20 years and then return to the diocese. Scot talked about the requirements for abstinence and fasting during Lent. Abstinence means Catholics over age 14 and in good health must abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays of Lent. Fr. Chris said 14 years old is about the age of Confirmation and thus the person is about an adult. The reason we abstain is not that the Church has something against meat, but that we are doing some penance together. We are giving something up to set aside Lent as a different time. Giving something up is to reflect why we give it up. Christ gave his life on the cross for us as an offering and so we make an offering, we are reminding ourselves of our membership in the body of Christ and the great gift that Christ gave to us. Scot asked about vegans and vegetarians. Sr. Olga said she's a vegetarian and so she gives up something else. Whatever we give up during Lent is a sign of love for Jesus. We are giving in return to the One who on Friday pours out his whole life to redeem us. On Ash Wednesday and Good Friday, those between 18 and up to their 60th birthday, we are asked to fast, which means to have only one full meal and up to two small meals that don't add up to a full meal. No snacks between meals. Sarah said the freshman students at the Catholic center are just 18 and so may be fasting for the first time. The Catholic community gives them support to endure. Scot said he would play some clips from Fr. Robert Barron on the three practices of Lent: Prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. (See video linked above.) Fr. Chris commented on Fr. Barron's practical tips on prayer. He suggested praying while driving. Fr. Chris said he knows a priest who gives up music for Lent, including in the car, and substitutes it with prayer. He recalled Pope Benedict's World Day of Communications message that talked about silence. If we don't hear the Word, silence is aloof, cold and barren. They go together. We need moments of silence to hear the Lord. Sarah said it's very difficult to find silence on an urban college campus like Boston University. Students will say they don't have time for prayer, but what in life could you take out to take time for prayer. How about five minutes in prayer before or after homework. Sister said she told someone she was excited for Lent and Ash Wednesday and someone thought she was crazy to look forward to it. Scot said Cardinal Seán describes Lent as a 40-day retreat. Fr. Chris said when we're making Lenten resolutions, we have to be reasonable and practical in order to succeed. We don't want to become disheartened with ourselves when we fall, but so we can pick ourselves up when we continue. They should be practical and reasonable and good for us. It's not about the quantity of what we do, but the quality of what we do during Lent. Sr. Olga said the Holy Spirit led Jesus into the desert after His baptism. Even Jesus needed the Holy Spirit to lead him. We need to pray about our Lenten season, to ask for the grace to have a faithful, blessed, and fruitful Lenten season. Sarah said you also have to take Lent in a humble way. Have someone in your life who can hold you accountable for your Lenten resolutions. It helps you with a sanity check, if it's something you can actually carry out. It's not cheating to rely on your friends, on the Body of Christ. Scot said in his message for Lent, Pope Benedict that we don't go through Lent alone. Scot said of accountability, that you go public with your goal to receive help for furthering your prayer life. Sarah said she asked a friend for suggestions on a way she could work on her goals for Lent. Scot introduced another clip from Fr. Barron on fasting. 3rd segment: Scot said to Fr. Chris that Fr. Barron defines what fasting isn't. The purpose isn't a diet nor is it just giving up food. If we have suppress what we gravitate toward on a daily basis, we create space for God. Fr. Chris said the passions create enmity between us because we are always responding to our passions or appetites. St. Paul said the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak.We discipline ourselves so the stronger or more beautiful parts come forward. Sr. Olga said when she was at BU, she used to encourage students to fast from Facebook and spend that time in person with a friend or writes notes to a friend, in order to be attentive. She said we are going on a camping trip with Jesus in the wilderness so we need to be attentive to him. Scot said addiction might be too strong, but we can get addicted to many behaviors or activities that eventually mean we say we don't have time for prayer. Fr. Chris said there are some things that are essential and others that can crowd into our life and separate us from Christ. We aren't asked to give up the essentials, but to break through the habits and patterns that keep us from Christ. Fr. Chris said Fr. Barron said we aren't Puritans, and he addressed the lifting of abstinence and fasting when St. Patrick's Day is on a Friday in Lent. St. Patrick is patron saint of the Archdiocese of Boston and a patronal feast is a time for feasting. Scot said Lent is a time of joy as well. The readings for Ash Wednesday tells us not to look gloomy when fasting. Sr. Olga used the example of an engaged couple during the preparation for marriage, working hard to get the wedding ready, but it's also a time to be enjoyed and to look forward to sacrament on their wedding day. If we know why we are doing what we are doing during Lent, there is so much beauty we can't help but more joyful. The Church is giving us a whole season to work toward sainthood, so how can we not be joyful. Scot introduced a clip of Fr. Barron talking about almsgiving. He suggests the practice of responding to every request for money you receive by mail during Lent, give them something. When you see a homeless person, give them something. If you're buying something, choose the one you like, buy the next one down, and give the difference away to the poor. 4th segment: Scot said almsgiving is a generosity of spirit. All we own is not to be used just for ourselves. We are only stewards of those gifts. Fr. Chris said all we have been given comes from God so to be generous is to imitate the Divine. We give because God has given to us. He quoted St. Vincent de Paul who said when someone asks you for something, there's poverty there, so give. Scot said it's a spirit of almsgiving that's more important than how much we give. Sister Olga suggested carrying gift cards to grocery stores or a fast food restaurant to be able to give to someone who asks for help. She said almsgiving can also be service, both spiritual and corporal works of mercy. It can even be visiting a cemetery to pray the Divine Mercy chaplet for the deceased. Sarah said she and several students are going on an alternative Spring Break. They are taking a road trip to different convents to do service for the sisters, whatever they need of them. They will also be going to the National Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge, Mass.
