Quote of the Day: “Life is a struggle and the potential for failure is ever present, but those who live in fear of failure, or hardship, or embarrassment will never achieve their potential. Without pushing your limits, without occasionally sliding down the rope headfirst, without daring greatly, you will never know what is truly possible in your life.” ― William H. In this episode we are joined by Mitch James, a former competitive swimmer who found a love for lifesaving, in particular inflatable rescue boat racing. Mitch and I swam at neighbouring clubs once upon a time; however our paths didn't cross until this year, now that we are working together at Life Saving Victoria. In this chat, Mitch takes us through his swimming journey, and how that lead him to the world of lifesaving. We chat about the how competitive pool swimming can help you when out in the ocean rescuing someone, and the link between tumble turns and waves, if you're puzzled don't worry, Mitch gives the best description. Mitch really shows how being involved in the sport of lifesaving can be beneficial for the community, with over 50 lifesaving clubs made up of more than 37,000 members, working together to prevent aquatic related death and injury in all Victorian communities, which I think is pretty special. As always, you can find all links to things mentioned in the show notes. Lets dive on in to the chat. https://beyondsportwithfionastewart.com/ https://youtu.be/pxBQLFLei70 (speech referenced by Mitch) https://lsv.com.au/
In this episode, David speaks to Richard Stone who is a chartered construction manager, developer, property investor, a sought-after public speaker and podcaster. His passion is supporting young people as they transition into adult life, helping them through youth work, career guidance and in other practical ways. They speak about the projects Richard is working on. Including the training program, he is writing to teach small property developers how to put processes in place to deliver their projects on time, on budget and to code while keeping everyone on site safe. They also discuss honing your communication skills, recruiting the right people, sticking to your values in an ever-changing world, managing people in an empathetic way and much more. Putting in place systems is key to managing any project well and making the profit you expected. There are lots of opportunities in construction. Lots of people start with a trade, and then branch out into other areas. We all learn differently. The more you understand that, the more you get out of your team. Helping people to overcome challenges and do things they did not think they were able to do is highly rewarding for all parties. You need a mentor that is a few steps in front of you as well as one that is miles ahead of you. Success is a series of small steps. It is 100 boxes piled on top of each other. Put time and energy into recruitment and onboarding. Recruiting the wrong people and not training them properly is a recipe for disaster. Successful recruitment and partnerships both rely on shared values. People´s loyalty is to their values, not to your company. It is, therefore, vital that you hire people who have values that align with those of your business. Tailor the way you communicate to the needs of each individual. Empathy is the key to good communication. Society needs to be more open and ready to talk about mental health issues. BEST MOMENTS ‘Just turn up, be on time and work hard.' ‘For a long time, I had imposter syndrome because I´d never gone to uni.' ‘Recruitment is the one thing you must put most of your energy in to get right.' Imagine a world where more people can just get their purpose out of them, into a plan and then actually make it happen. What a world that would be - People everywhere finding meaning and harnessing that to bring inspiration and energy to each and every day, changing lives for the better. But no one ever achieved anything on their own - we all have something unique to bring and that means we all have to play our part - if we want to go far we have to go together and lead or serve towards a vision of the world we want to see. Everyone has a story to tell, and this show is where these stories come to life. Source: Make Your Bed Book by William H. University of Texas at Austin 2014 Commencement Address - Admiral William H. McRaven: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pxBQLFLei70

“You wanted to kill your father in order to be your father yourself. Now you are your father, but a dead father.” -Sigmund Freud “Your son is gone. He was weak and foolish like his father and so I destroyed him.” – Kylo Ren Once again, the Red Taped bros found themselves becalmed in the doldrums of summer. Despite valiant efforts, the Navy SEALs could not salvage our voyage of redemption and the core beliefs that once served as our ballast violently shifted leaving us adrift. This week we break up with the Navy SEAL management/self-help genre. We also find Aristotle’s wisdom hidden in a table-saw, drown our broken hearts in rum and Cuban food, find the delicate balance of The Dilbert Principle and Extreme Ownership, and reminisce about our first sticky-fumbling catastrophe of a pilot episode. The father-wounds run deep this episode, as we detach from our dominant podcasting daddies and set a new course into uncharted waters. Please join us as we navigate a messy break-up and discuss The Dichotomy of Leadership by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin.
